Music Memories In iuture years certain melodies will bring back highlights of your high school days: that funny as- sembly, that exciting tootball game, or that first dance. These will be recalled through the magic medium oi music. We hope this book too will aid in bringing to mind cherished memories. x . THE SUPERINTENDENTS TYPICAL DAY Arriving at the ottice at eight o'clock each morning, Mr. Smith checks over his business for the day ahead. This business varies daily. A typical day might start, however, in a conference with a grade school, junior high, or high school principal on some school problems. At any time he may be called about some Blossom Festival business as related to schools out ot town. Be- tore his lunch hour he talks with salesmen who want to sell books, supplies, or equipment to the school. lnterviewing teachers who want positions in our schools tor the next year is also the business ot our superintendent. After lunch Mr. Smith receives, reads, and answers large stacks of mail on many different subjects. Answering phone calls from numerous individuals is no small task. Many returning veterans who want advice about reentering school or on plans tor their tuture rely on Mr. Smith. He is also the president ot our lunior College. There is always a school board meeting or some other business in the evening that helps to make Mr. Smith's day a tull one. THE PRINCIPAL'S TYPICAL DAY Telephone, Mr. Nugent. When will Mr. Nugent be back? May l speak to Mr. Nugent? Thus starts a typical day tor our principal. lt is Mr. Nugent's duty to see that the business of the high school runs smoothly. There is always some meeting tor him to attend such as student council, legislature, club, and class meetings. Also he must help the seniors with their commencement, baccalaureate, and other problems that arise dur- ing the last few months ot school. ln addition to all these activities he has put a lot ot time and work into making the Wa Wa a success. Another not so pleasant duty of our principal is that ot truancy and delin- quency. He also attends teachers' meetings and business meetings down town Where he represents the high school. There is a never ceasing stream of people going in and out ot his ottice each day. Mr. Nugent is on the executive board oi the State High School Principals' Association and is the vice president for the coming year. He is also active in scouting. As a member ot Rotary he is the program chairman and a mem- ber of the Board ot Directors. Also Mr. Nugent was chairman ot the park program tor the '46 festival. Athletics is an active interest ot Mr. Nugent's. He is North Central Wash- ington's representative to the State Athletic Association. Every student at one time or another during his high school years has a problem that only Mr. Nugent can solve tor him. r,,fQW Wwe.. .,., M. f, f f 55 . an N, ,,, ,. ,,,, -. ,sM..,, . fi.. This, however is only one of the tasks of the Pep Clubs. Color Day and the Pep Rally were made possible through the efforts of the three clubs, P. K., P. G., and Hi Yu. The Alma Mater was revived and it is hoped that the tradition will be followed in future years to have it sung at assemblies and games. GIRLS' CLUB 'CABINET Each Tuesday after school department heads, officers and advisors met with representatives from the Girls' Pep Clubs and the Heinz Club to form the Girls' Club Cabinet. Every girl in Wenatchee High School may belong to Girls' Club and with this membership are entailed various jobs for the school and community. The work from study hall chairman to assemblies is organized by the Girls' Club. All work and no play make leanie a dull girl so along with the duties comes entertainment given for and by the girls. Such entertainment during this year was the Harvest Hop, the Mothers' Day Tea and Style Show as Well as a Girls' Club Assembly. Presiding over the meetings for the fall semester was Katherine Brown and in the spring Barbara Oatey. 04-9 PEP BOARD Pep Board will meet right after school is what you have been hearing all year on the Tuesday morning bulletins. Pep Board is made up oi the representatives of the three girls' service clubs, P. K., P. G., and Hi Yu, their advisors and the officers elected from the three clubs. This group supervises all activities ot the individual pep clubs and keeps the three Working as a unit. BOYS SERVICE CLUBS One might come to the conclusion that the boys' clubs, the Hy-Y and the Derby Club, do nothing but have a good time. On the contrary, they serve the schools in many ways. The Hi-Y donated their services to the Community Chest Drive and helped collect canned goods tor the Foods For Victory Drive. They also topped oil our successful football season with the Annual Varsity Ball. The Derby Club, in coo-peration with the girls clubs, helped with the Rus- sian Clothes Reliet Drive, and conducted the Red Cross collections. One of the best dances of the year, the yearly Sweetheart Dance, was put on by the Happy Hatters. l We should be proud of these clubs and commend them tor their willing cooperation throughout the year. The . purpose ot these meetings was to give an opportunity tor the members to re- t live some oi the customs ot the Romans. Four traditional meetings were held. The first was the slave sale which served as an initiation in September. The slave block, the wearing ot a stitt collar oi servility, and the bidding tor the slaves were according to the old Roman custom. The harvest festival, known as the Saturnalia, was observed in December. Ann Brenner was crowned aueen of the revelry this year. t The ninth annual Roman wedding was held February 19. Betty Nutting was the bride and Ralph Meenach the bridegroom. The tossing of her bouquet out to the crowd and the procession to the new home Cchiravaril continue today from the Roman custom. The Roman banquet, the last ot the traditional meetings, was held at noon so that a full membership could attend in May. Other programs included the iollowing mythological titles: Pomona and Vertumus, Neptune's Court, Pyramus and Thisbe, and Hercules in Television. Roman history was shown in the lulius Caesar musical comedy given in March, and in the skit showing the history from the time ot Romulus to the present. From part ot the proceeds ot the dance held in September two books were secured tor the high school library in memory ot Forrest Nickles '39 and Dick Simons '4l, former club members who were lost in the war. Dorothy Struble, senior consul tor the club, was recipieit of the iunior Classi- cal League gold key at the iinal award assembly. LOS BUSCADORES ROW 1 - Booth, Norelius, Man, Blcvie. LOS BUSCADORES This year Los Buscadores started with 46 new members initiated in the same old torturous ways by eating pie blind folded, and fishing pennies out of flour. The Spanish Club bought eight books on Latin America, by Sydney Green- bie. They hope this will help them and others to understand the ways of the people of the Latin American countries. The books have maps and full colored pictures, and anyone who wishes may check them out. The club members had a party at Christmas where they danced, ate, and had fun breaking pinatas, which are paper sacks filled with candy. The sacks were tied up high and a person blind-folded, given a stick tries to break the pinata. lf he does not break it with three tries, the next person is allowed to try. Los Buscadores also sponsored a successful dance after a game with Cash- mere. F. F. A. The F. F. A., led by president George Weeks, has again completed a suc- cessful year in the scientific study of farming. The Wenatchee Chapter of the F. F. A. is one of the ninety-nine chapters located throughout the state. This year the members were fortunate in receiving 95500 from the Sears Foundation. With this money they purchased two purebred Hereford heifers. Two members were then contracted to feed and care for the livestock during the year. Seven purebred hogs were also obtained and contracted out to members. Each boy tried to have an agricultural project in order to win some of the higher degrees of the organization and to prepare himself for a farming career. F. F. A. ROW 1 - B. WA WA STAFF Hey kids! The Wa Wa is out and boy What a book! Padded covers are back after a lapse of two years. This year the theme Music is carried out throughout the book. Who is this? was a familiar expression which could be heard from all corners after the class and club pictures had been taken. lf you turned to see Why all the commotion, you probably came upon members of the Wa Wa staff with a picture in one hand, a pencil in the other, and a puzzled look on their faces. They were trying to identify every face which in some pictures you will notice is hard to do, The staff has had many good times and struggles together in making this book what it is. We hope this book will hold for you, as it will for us, mem- ories of your good times in high school in l946. APPLE LEAF BUSINESS STAFF The Apple Leaf Business Staff is vital to our paper, for without it expenses could not loe met. The Apple Leaf Business Staff is otherwise known as 'the Sales Class. Under the direction of Mr. Mahrt, the students secure ads from the down town stores and other lousinesses. This year the sales classes did an excellent job even though they were very small. Other projects of the sales class were: advertisement for school plays and activities, and the sale of War Stamps and Bonds. ard, Zudtc, Scott. son. Mlaore, Camp. Sugg, Thom, McCauley DRAMA One of the most active organizations in our school is the Dramatics Club, composed of students who have taken part in plays or have been admitted through try-outs for membership. The members meet once a month for a planned program. With the help of the Associated Student Body the Dramtics Club is working toward four hundred dollars worth of scenery, and in the years to come they hope to acquire other facilities such as furniture, costumes and dressing rooms. The three big events of the year were the three-act plays which were produced and given on the high school stage. They were: The Bat, a murder mystery play, The Mad March Heirs, a comedy, ::The Barrettsng and a one- act play, Mansions This year's officers were: Pat Suqqf President: Betty Nutting, vice president, Nancy De Puy, secretary and treasurer. Miss Lilliam Brown is advisor. CN-9 THESPIANS The Wenatchee Thespian Troup number 469 has been associated with the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society for high schools for four years. It is an organization recognizing outstanding work in dramatics. Having gained a certain number of points in the Dramatics Club, thirty seven out of forty club members were eligible for membership in the Thespian group. The motto of all Thespian is, Act well your part, there all your honor lies. The Wenatchee Thespian troup is looking forward to a more active life, as quoted by Miss Lillian Brown, advisor. ting. The band has been very faithful this yeqf in turning out for the football and. basketball games. The band exchanged assemblies with Chelan and helped with the Mexican Cele- bration as well as leading the Halloween lamboree. It also participated in the Apple Blossom Festival. The band, like the athletic department gives stripes, gives notes to the members participating in a majority of its activities. This spring the band gave an assembly. During the assembly a Music Quiz was held which ended with Mrs. Van Tassell skipping rope and Mrs. Matthews and Mr. Perch proposing to each other. Diane Iones and Harley Hildebrand chewed a string tor the dollar bill which was in the center of it. The annual Spring Concert was held March 13. The Glee Club, another division, presented a Thanksgiving Concert which will not be forgotten easily. The last performance of the year by both Band and Glee Club was at baccalaureate and commencement. b The String Ensamble has served many community organizations as well as the school. They played between acts for the Senior and Dramatics Clubs Plays. They played dinner music tor several organizations including the Co-ed Conference Banquet, Boy Scout Banquet, and the North Central Princi- pals' Banquet. Qther music groups are: Boys' Octet, Revelers, Clarinet, Quartet, and Brass Quartet. GLEE CLUB BAND W ROW 1 1 Jlohnson, Travis, Willet, Wiess, Richardson, Scott, Tnthnm. Cannon. The Panthers were divided into two teams, the Blues and the Colds, in this game. The Blues played Cashmere and the Golds Played Chelan. Even with the team divided it was a walkaway for the Panthers. Wenatchee 6, Omak 0. This was the closest game of the year. The Panthers and the Pioneers fought up and down the field until the closing minutes without a score. Then in a pounding drive we lugged one over. What a game! Wenatchee 26. Cashmere 0. Once again Cashmere's lack of reserves told the story. Our traditional rivals from upriver gave our substitutes valuable experience. Wenatchee 21, Central Valley 0. With Ierry Wheeler, Mel Derting, and Bobby Satterwhite blocking, and Carl Brenner carrying the ball, the Purple andQGold came through without any real oppositional trouble. Subs got more ex- perience. Wenatchee 26, West Valley 6. This also was a relatively easy win. If the Eagles had begun their passing attack earlier in the game, it might have been a different story. Wenatchee 20, Cle 'Elum 7. Panther spectators saw in this game one of the best exhibitions of any defensive player. This player was Mataya of Cle Blum. He was all over the field making tackles and making yardage, but the Panthers retaliated by precision teamwork to make a decisive victory. Wenatchee 6, Yakima 33. This was it. Someone had to do it sometime. The big, rugged, and speedy Yakima Pirates ran all over us. This was the first game in three years that the Panthers came out on the short end of the score. Our only score was made by Bill Sansaver on the fabulous Valley Reverse. Wenatchee 40, Ellensburg 21. This was by far the wildest game of the season. Brenner, Satterwhite, Derting, and all the other backs got a shot at the goalline in this battle, and they usually scored. Ray Watts was outstanding for the opponents with his pile-driving charges. This wound up the '45 pigskin parade. lt wasn't a brilliant season, but it was far from being unsuccessful. COACH'S MESSAGE The l945 football season saw our three-year undefeated record go by the boards. The Panthers lost to the big and fast Yakima Pirates, who handed us our only defeat of the season. The season saw us start with only two returning regulars-Wheeler and Satterwhite, plus two other boys with quite a bit of experience-Derting and Cave. Carl Brenner proved to be an offensive standout by using his sprinters speed to good advantage. Young and Sansaver were capable ends, who along with Wilson are the only regulars returning next year. Dennis was a spark plug on defense and was aided by Rotter, Godfrey, and Scott. Our team played spirited ball, winning seven and losing one. l-lightlight of the season was the wild, wide-open defeat of Ellensburg, 40-2l, followed the next day by a trip to Seattle to wi ness the W. S. C.-Washington game. Our basketball season was a typical Wenatchee season in that we lost seven of our first nine games, and then went on to win twelve straigh. ln North Central Washington competition we were undefeated. We beat Omak, the B champions, three times and won the Chelan County Tournamentg ln the District A Tournament we were beaten by Walla Walla and lost our chance to repeat our visit to the A Tourney in Seattle. We came back to defeat Clarkston and take third in the District Tourna- ment. Six players carried most of the burden of the basketball team. Ron Stallings, All-District forward, and Bill Gardner were the leading scorers while the height of Pete Young, Bob Burgess, and Bob Parks paid off on the bacboards. Oscar Probst, Bill Milliken, Dick Kinney, Dale Henderson, and Bud Hartley played considerable first team ball. Prospects for next year's team are excellent, what with several regulars returning. Our B squad lost but one game all season. Standouts were Don Teters, Bill Sansaver, lerry Nichols, lack Garland, and Ken Grubbs. This year also marked the end of the war and we are glad to welcome back to the barn the old grads of former years who are returning from the service. A sore spot will always remain in our hearts when we think of the game little athletes and sportsmen like Ted Smith who will not return. l would also like to thank the Iunior Chamber of Commerce for their memorial ffootball award which was won by Bob Satterwhite this year. ln closing, I want to thank the students, faculty, and ad ministration for their wonderful support of our ahletic program. You have been most loyal in our de feats as well as our victories. Frank Doc Conway. BASKETBALL As Doc Conway said, Our basketball season Was a typical Wenatchee seasonf' Our cagers started out very slowly. They lost the first several games and then suddenly poured on Jhe coal to wind up the season as Chelan County champions. In the District Tourney at Walla Walla, the Panthers placed third. Bon Stallings was easily the most consistent scorer and the most aggressive player on the team, While Bill Gardner, though not as consistent, ran Stallings a close second for fire and aggressiveness. Pete Young and Bob Burgess were the forgotten men. Throughout the entire season they were snag- ging the ball off the backboards and feeding their teammates who received the bulk of the praise. Probably the biggest surprise of She year was Bob Parks. The lanky junior took over the center position and did a surprisingly competent job. Bill Milliken, Dale Henderson, Dick Kinney, Oscar Probst, and Bud Hartley did very Well as reserves. Prospects for next year's casaba squad look exceedingly good. Young, Burgess, Parks, Hartley, Oscar Probst, and Kenny Grubbs are returning and several sophomores such as Tack Garland, Bill Sansaver, and Ierry Nichols are prospective first-string material. Ottcraaen, TRACK 1945 With the help of several returning lettermen, the Panther thin clads turned in a fairly impressive record. Two county records were broken during the County Track Meet. Carl Brenner, probably the outstanding track star ot the year, set a new record in the 440. Brenner cut 2flO of a second oft the mark set by Ierry Milliken in l944. Clerance Stumpt tlung the discus l4O' 5 to better McKenzie's toss of 138' 2 set in l94l. Other consistent point-getters were Dick Keilmeyer, pole vault, Dick Conk- lin, broad jump, Lee Cave, halt mile: Parkhill, high jumpg Eldon Landon, jave- ling Pete Young, hurdles and high jump: and Raymond Younkin, mile. Wenatchee had several tough breaks in their meets. At Ellensburg they lost by one point. ln the District Meet at Omak the Panthers lost by 2X3 of point. Win just a handtul ot contestants, Wenatchee placed fourth out of titteen schools entered at an invitational meet at Central Valley. BASEBALL AND TENNIS Because ot the publishing deadline date of our Annual, the baseball and varsity tennis teams cannot be included this year. Next year they will prob- ably be handled in the same manner as our Eiack section. lt is noteworthy, though, that l946 and the end ot the War is bringing to W. l-l. S. and every other school a boom in athletics that's never been seen before. Coach C y GIRLS' SPORTS Volleyball, tennis, bowling, basketball, badminton, and baseball, are only a few of the many sports that girls have participated in throughout the year. Nearly every girl in W. H. S. at some time has taken P. E. and will long remem- ber the enjoyment she had there. Badminton started the sports season oft with a bang this year. Over one hundred girls turned out tor the double elimination ournament. Elvie Connor and Eleanor Nyholm were winners this year but not without some tricky play- ing. Elvie played net while Eleanor played back. Next came volleyball which was a round robin tournament. Six teams participated. Shirley Weber's team met victory in this tournament. The basketball season was a very exciting one with many close games. Demarest's team won the championship. Her team has been together for the past three years and has developed much skill in handling the ball. As time marches on we come to the tennis tournament. This tournament was still in progress when the annual went to press. Still to play off is the championship game between Verna Travis and Narice Emory vs. Marilyn Davis and Barbara Gay. Many invitational meets have been held this year. Chelan played here in a meet which W. H. S. won. Our tennis team wen to Omak where they lost. This team contains the outstanding boys and girls in tennis. Girls on the team are as follows: Barbara Gay, Marilyn Davis, Florence Demarest, Verna Travis, Elvie Connor, and Betty Ann Maloney. The soft ball tournament drew a great deal oi enthusiasm from the girls of W. H. S. At the time ot this writing Shirley Scott's team is ahead. Bowling is a sport which the advanced gym class has gone into very thoroughly. However, no bowling tournament was held this year. Many 'sore-muscles and charlie-horses have resulted from calisthenics and tumbling. Many girls even after two years still can not master the art of push-ups. Girls' sports offer girls entertainment and teach them teamwork at the same time. lt may seem to be an easy curricula but it builds up your character and personality.
