You should be exploring new fields of experience to gain the knowledge and back- ground so necessary to solve satisfactorily the tremendous problems of tomor- row. You may well profit from the experience of the early settlers of the valley. Those who endured first established a firm foundation. You should be build- ing your foundation at the present moment through diligent application to your daily tasks, to the end that you may successfully meet the challenges of the future. The greatest challenge is a social one, the establishment of an enduring and peaceful world. Your parents are providing the means and expect you to secure the ends toward the establishment of a happier civilization which will guarantee a more satisfying life. Are you adequately preparing to do your part as leaders in the social world which will evolve after the war? 2tL8.SmdA Medwqe Americas future lies in the preservation of Democracy. Our heritage gave us various freedomsefreedoms dearly won at great sacrifice and at the present time being defended with human lives. Visualize these freedoms as privileges you enjoyeand they are. But do not lose sight of the fact that each privilege demands many obligations. lt is the supreme duty of each prospective citizen to equip himself thoroughly for active participation in Americas perpetuation. Society challenges you to grow constantly from a self-centered individual seeking personal benefits to- ward a broad-minded, Well-educated adult, with a mature understanding of the problems you will have to solve. ' Take inventory of yourselffcan you honestly say that your social, mental, and moral attitudes are fulfilling the demands of society and not of yourself? :una lvugenl MN ' 1' H to Vi - rut 5 , w, f ,Q W...-All 1, ra, Aw sl page J ff , , ,, 'f4'9f??fdf -, it t ,vw t,-. 4, '. . The gavel's sharp crack resounds throughout the room. This familiar scene is enacted each week by the many and varied clubs of W. H. S. Serve and preserve. This is the prime purpose of the various girls' and boys' service clubs. To promote interest and unite those students studying foreign languages, the S. P. Q. R. Club and the Spanish Club were created. The Apple Leaf, the biweekly school paper, keeps its readers informed of the latest news about students and their activities. To keep alive in word and picture the varied school activities, the Wa Wa staff publishes the school annual, which contains a complete summary of a year at Wenatchee High. Tish and many shorter plays were presented throughout the year by the active Dramatics Club and the Thespians. The F. F. A. is composed of those students interested in modern, scientific ways of agriculture. The Debate Club carries on debates on present-day topics with local schools. We owe much of our school spirit and interest in music to the various musical organizations in W. H. S. The Girls' Club, composed of every girl in school, donates all of its time to service to the school and community. Then, of course, we have the Honor Society, whose members not only participate in varied activities but also maintain a good scholastic standing. All of these groups sponsor or present some worthwhile entertainment dur- ing the year. Usually a dance and an assembly are sponsored every two weeks by one of these active organizations. These activities are for the purpose of creating recreation for the students, and at the same time raising funds for the group or for some other worthwhile cause. However, far more than dances and assemblies are undertaken by these school groups. Contributions to the Red Cross, knitting for members of the armed forces, the sale of tuberculosis pins and spangles, the war fund drive, the Stagedoor Canteen contributions, the support of a Chinese war orphan, making scrapbooks for wounded soldiers, the sale of war stamps and bonds, and many more victory projects were included in this year's activities. The Panthers started a little slow but gained momentum continuously as the season progressed. The climax of the schedule came when the undefeated lohn Rogers' eleven of Spokane Went down to one of the smooth- est football teams that the Wenatchee fans have ever Watched. Seven wins, no ties, and l88 points to the opponents mere l3! This year's team had no outstanding players, but put them all together and they formed an undefeatable combination. As the Panthers football season ended early this year to enable the boys to help with the apple harvest, the practice time was much shorter. Not even this obstacle could keep the Panthers from finishing with an unmarred season. 5 f.f:i ff:.- ge I , -- 4 1 .1 , 4 , ., --. Nlorton. Brown. Row 2. Stumpf. Preston. Ulery, Conklin. Slechrer. If - The beginning of the '43344 basketball season was anything but a coach's dream as far as Wenatchee was concerned. Besides having a green team as a starter, Doc Conway had to bid against Uncle Sam for three of his best players, and, as always, Uncle Sam wound up with Triplett, Preston, and Tucker. To realize how much the Wenatchee five improved during the year, one has only to look at the end of the season. Wenatchee tied Cashmere and Peshastin for first place in the Wenatchee valley league and won third place in the district tournament by defeating Omak. The first six players were captain and high-point-man Conklin, Ulery, Mor- ton, Brown, Stumpf, and Duncan. The B squad went through the year undefeated, and if Doc can find some tall lanky prospect for center, next year's team should arrive at tournament time with a record equal to, if not better than, this year's team.
