That new padded cover just sets the whole book off from any other Wa Wa ever put out by We- natchee High School students. Under the able guidance of Miss Zeiher, and the financial handlings of Miss Libby, the Wa Wa staff got into full swing early in the first semester. At the first few meetings, business in general was discussed and members of the staff were selected. Betty Byers, popular senior girl, was chosen editor, one of the biggest jobs any student can hold. At these various meetings, the theme, the cover, the number of pages, and the book as a whole were planned. After much discussion, the theme Hands was chosen. Eunice Knutson, the staff artist, under the direction of Mrs. Duncan, worked up the attractive section drawings. Ralph Wood headed the financial staff and took care of paying the bills and promoting the sale of the book. And now-the staff, one and all, wishes to thank the members of the student body, for, after all, it is they Who made the book possible by their loyal support. EDITORIAL STAFF E395 .. isa rm? APPLE LEAF This year the members of the Apple Leaf editorial staff started off in full swing under their new advisor, Mr. McDowell, who came to Wenatchee High from Colfax, Washington. The editors of the Apple Leaf were Roy Dailey, Mimi Corner, and Mary Haney. These three persons had all studied advanced journalism, and there- fore were put at the head of the paper until it Was Well started. The first paper went to press September 3, 1940, and was distributed to the students on Friday, September 5, 1940. Later in the semester the staff was reorganized and Bill Milot was made editorial chief. This was done in order that some of the more inexperienced journalism students could have a chance to edit the paper. The advertising staff, under the capable leadership of Ruth Austin and Mrs. DeVoe, the advertising advisor, did much to help make the Apple Leaf possible. Without ads the printing of the paper would be impossible as the advertising pays for the expense of printing. On the evening of january 23, 1941, the semi-annual journalism banquet was held, at which time Virginia Maus was announced as the editor of the paper for the spring term and Mary Haney was appointed to head the advertis- ing staff. Every Tuesday when the Girls' Club Cabinet met, this was one of the many exclamations heard. One ot the main projects ot the cabinet all year has been the Etiquette Book. This book tells the right thing to do in answer to students' questions. Presidents Emma Hansen and Bess Kelly have ably led us through another successful year. Th.ese cabinets have planned, to a large extent, the activities of the various departments oi the club. BOYS' FEDERATION Why can't the boys have a club? This question started the ball rolling, and it ended in the Boys' Federation being formed. President Frank Conway and his cabinet planned many activities for the boys of the school-the highly successful Sucker Day, some of our better assemblies, and, of course, the in- valuable help in the carnival. Yes, the Boys' Club has really proved worthwhile and has shown at the outset what it can give in service to the school. AND SENATORS Guthrie, 'Gerdes, Smith, Ray- mond, Provo. SERVICE CLUBS C Due to the combined efforts of the girls' pep clubs We've had much en- thusiasm and school spirit throughout this year. The P. K.'s, P. G.'s, and Hi Yu's started the season by selling hot dogs and chrysanthemums at the football games. You will also remember the assembly, banquet, and dance that made the Stadium players feel so much at home. This spring the pep clubs spon- sored a highly successful carnival-a real funfest, in which every club' and class in school took part. Not to be outdone, the boys' Derby and Hi Y Clubs had their share of activities. The gate Crashers at the football games will remember how the Hi Y's wielded their paddles, and the players know how handy the ambulance squad Was. When Christmas came the Derby Club members staged their an- nual voclvil, Which, with the assistance of all the clubs and classes in school, proved to be one of the outstanding productions of the year. Although the main activities of these five clubs stress service to the school in general, the members do manage to tuck in a great deal of enjoyment along with their work. On their calendar we find picnics and dances and many other social activities of all kinds. HI Y CLUB Graham, Kavanaugh. Miller. Snyder, Stewart, Borden Satterlsurg, Chase, Lester. PEP BOARD PEP BOARD The central body of the girls' pep clubs is the Pep Board. The officers for the board are chosen from any pep club, and each club has a representation of three members. Activities in which the three clubs take part are handled by the board, not to mention its separate activities. The main projects spon- sored by this group during the past year have been the football and basket- ball banquets, the all school carnival, and the pep club picnic. Of all these ac- tivities the most successful was the sponsoring of the all school carnival held this spring. Every organization in Wenatchee High took part to make it a really gala affair. HEIN Z CLUB Come on, all you new girls. Get your lunch and come to the Heinz Club. At the beginning of the year this was the cry sent out to all new girls in our school. B, ' The main purpose of this club is to get the girls acquainted with each other and With the school. l think. you'll agree with us that this club serves a worth- while need in getting newcomers to feel at home. Although it consists of the Spanish 2 class, the club has regular meetings out- side of school as well. Under President lean Small, Vice President Ioe Miller, and Secretary- Treasurer Georgiann McLean, and with the able counsel of Mr. Henriclcsen, the club has been quite active this spring. The Spanish Fiesta in May was the out- standing activity of the group. This is one of the few clubs that tie in directly with school Work. Giving its members a chance to practice and apply what they learn in regular classes, it provides an incentive to Work in school. YELL CLASS The untiring efforts of the yell squad, directed by Norma Boyles and Lila Linder, yell queens, and their assistants, Bob Barnett, Bob Loeffelbein, Gene Snyder, and Sara Smith, helped considerably in making our '40-'41 sport season both successful and pleasurable. Now at the end of the year they have confident, able speakers who can toast in good form. Because of the large membership, the club was divided into two groups, the Purple, directed by Mr. Melgren, and the Gold, directed by Mr. Grafious. Standing: Sitting: 50 HISTORY FORUM Row 1. Row 2. A Lincoln Day banquet with Walt Horan as speaker highlighted the year. Next year We look for The History Forum to come back with more allegiance and spirit than before. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club, for all its scanty one year of life, has shown itself to be a very up and coming organization. Under the direction of their advisor, Mr. Melgren, these young but aspiring photographers have accomplished a great deal during '40-'41, especially in the production oi the Camera Club movie with an all member cast. ln order that both boys and girls may be equally represented, the novel idea of electing two presidents was used. This year's co-presidents were Vir- ginia Maus and lack Gahringer. The club's excellent equipment is built largely by members. CLUB The first monthly meeting of the S. P. Q. R. Club was held in October. The usual slave sale was the activity of the evening. New members were pur- chased as slaves by the old members with Washington State tax tokens. The new slaves had been required to wear neck bracelets on the day of the auction to signify that they were the initiates and to let the old members see what choice of slaves was to be had. At each of the following monthly meetings a Roman play or parody was enacted in full costume for the enjoyment of the club members. Each play was acted, directed, and produced by the club members. Much time was spent in learning the parts and making the costumes for each production. Some of the dramatic contributions included Pamona, a love story of a fickle young woman: The Wanderings of Ulysses, the story of a wanderer: Pygmalian and Galataf' the story of the perfect womang and Iulius Caesar, the story of the famous Roman. i ln the spring the members of the club enjoyed a Roman banquet and a Wed- ding, both of which were something a little different from their usual program but proved to be very enjoyable. The banquet was carried off in true Roman style, much to the satisfaction of all the club members. One of the main objectives of the club was to obtain more student partic- ipation. This object has been realized in that the membership has steadily in- creased since the 'club's beginning four years ago. DRAMATIC CLUB Sitting: Grandstnff, Stewart, Borden Glaze. Kneeling: Linder. At the beginning of the year these remarks were common among members ot the Dramatic Club. The reason? There was a new dramatics coach, and everyone was wondering what she would be like. What is she like? Well, I guess her actions speak for themselves. You all remember The Night ot Ianuary l6th -the trial by jury, the ver- dict coming in, and Witnesses coming from the audience to testify for or against. This play is one to be long remembered. The Thespians scored another hit with their participation in the Derby Club Vodvil. You remember Dress Rehearsal, and the tense moment when every- one shot at everyone else. Of course you remember. Now at the end ot the year listen in again on the comments of the Thespians after they have been a whole year under their new coach. Gee, she's a swell person. ORCHESTRA The sc-r-r-r-a-a-a-pe of a violin, a squeal from a clarinet, and several other Weird noises may be all the reception a visitor to orchestra practice would re- ceive, but if he were to hear the group in concert, he would never recognize it. The orchestra has done remarkably well this year. lt has played at many school functions, as well as presenting a few concerts of its own, It participated in the music festival here in March and sent several members to the All-North- west music conference and festival in Spokane. Of course, most of the credit for this fine organization should go to Mr. Ralph, its conductor. Keep it up, orchestra! BAND The band deserves special mention for the work it has done this year. Al- though it is not large in numbers, it has abundant talent and ability. lts small size makes possible a larger degree of co-operation than is obtainable in a larger group. The purchase of navy blue and gold uniforms has given it a snappier appearance. The schools addition of several new instruments has provided an instrumentation comparable with those of much larger organiza- tions. The band participated in the music festival here in March and played an exchange concert with Chelan, as well as playing at football and basketball games and at pep assemblies. Let's give Mr. Ralph and his group a big hand for their part in building and keeping up our school spirit. DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS Row 1. Row 2. Row 3. Row 4. MAJ ORETTES Idle, Fox, Parkhill, Myers, Coon, Woodward, Viancour, Boyles, Greenwalr, Smith, Haney. 1 DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS With a roll of drums and a flash of bugles, the girls of the Drum and Bugle Corps opened their season at the Chelan football game. Spectators were plea- santly surprised to see such a colorful presentation, after so little time to practice. At Christmas time, when the townspeople wanted some organization with sparkle and color to open their toy window displays, they asked this group of girls to render the welcome service. The girls also performed during the intermis- sion of the Cashmere basketball game, after which they sponsored the dance, which proved to be one of the largest given this year. The early spring season was a very busy one for the girls, as they per- formed at many functions. Spectators witnessed some fine drilling during the celebration for the stores' spring styles opening, at which the girls appeared. During the Apple Blossom Festival the girls performed twice each day on both Friday and Saturday. The corps was a very important factor in the success of the royal procession as it led the royal float in the big parade and assisted dur- ing the evening of the Coronation and scepter presentation ceremonies. Later in the spring were more activities. The girls drilled at the first night baseball game, and wound up the evening with a very successful dance. Also in the late spring, and the crowning point of a most active season, was a trip to the Lilac Festival Parade held each year in Spokane. Hess. GLEE CLUB The Glee Club has probably accomplished more this year than any previ- ous year. Its crowning achievement, the presentation of the Ballad for Ameri- cans, with Bernell Gregory as America, represented much talent and work com- bined. This number has been given at many downtown meetings as well as twice before our own assembly, arousing a great deal of favorable comment wherever it was heard. The substitution of uniform sweaters for the old choir robes has changed the appearance of the group from a religious to a more everyday organization. The recording machine which has recently been added to their equipment en- abled the members of the club to hear themselves as others do. Of course, no group of this kind could do much without strong leadership. Much credit goes to Miss Adams for her excellent direction. Student officers were: Bernell Gregory, presidenty Frankie Soule, secretary: Mary Sims, so- prano representativeg Donna Mae Robertson, alto representativeg and Glen Goff, tenor representative. AIRPLANE CLUB With Mr. Easton as navigator: Larry Reeves, pilot: Ed Beuhler, co-pilot: Bill Bernard, radio operator: and Wade Penhallegon, steward, the Wenatchee High School Model Airplane Club has gone places this past year. Using models of the first World War airplanes, the club has learned much about fighting planes, their construction, and their requirements. Let's give this club a hand for being one of the most practical and promising in Wenatchee High School. Truly, theirs is the enthusiasm this nation needs in these air- minded times. Hurry up, fellows, you'll be late for the trip. This was the cry of Mr. Helm on different occasions during the school year. The F. F. A. boys, better known as the Future Farmers of America, made many trips to surrounding com- munities this past year-thanks to the financing of the local chapter. The judging teams consist of high school F. F. A. boys picked from Mr. Helm's classes. A different team is chosen for every trip. This year over fourteen boys made trips to different towns to compete in judging contests. Roy Breiler, a Wenatchee F. F. A. boy, placed thirteenth in the Northwest Conven- tion held in Portland, Oregon. This year the F. F. A. boys have been working with the Washington State Experimental Station, trying to discover if lead arsenate is harmful to the soil in apple orchards. f f N... X .pu-F' ,..-r ,Q ',...., lf Q7 N - - 60 Gaaciii Mmm Dear Students: With the trying conditions facing our country and the world today, I be- lieve that the work of our athletic teams increases in importance. As never before in history we need men who are unselfish, men who are kindly, men who are thoughtful. It is my belief that the boys who engage in athletics are strong physically, and the most loyal, and the most appreciative boys in the average American society. I feel that the boys who participated on our athletic teams this year have been outstanding in team morale, co-operation, loyalty, and self sacrifice to im- prove their physical fitness. In both football and basketball the boys had to overcome handicaps of inexperience and lack of size, but they continued to work, despite early setbacks, and learned the value of continually doing their best. Their records were good in that they continued to improve throughout both seasons. The year was an enjoyable one for me, and I hope that it was enioyable and valuable both to the boys who played and to the students who supported the boys so loyally throughout both seasons. Sincerely, REX SCOTT. '40 GRID DIARY Miners find goal-dz A well-contested opener on new turf saw the veteran Cle Elum team trounce ye locale 20-0. The high light of the game was Cle Elum's 72-yard touchdown trot. Pirates take booty: Iohn Rogers, top Spokane team, took Wenatchee on a rain soaked gridiron 13-0 by blocking a punt in the shadow of our goal posts and going over, and by adding another six in the fourth. 3 down: 5 to go: The Yakima Pirates, with the help of a 215-pound fullback, on their home grounds took Wenatchee 32-6, but were we downhearted? Not when we were the only team to cross their goal line to date. Panthers get mad and take one-33-13: Penalties abounded, with the Panthers being called for 85 yards total to Wapato's 20 yards on the Wolves' home grounds. Panthers get their goats: Much outweighed, the Panthers stacked up another win over the red and green of Chelan, 27-6, with Henderson taking honors for his 86 and 60-yard runs. Stadium 13-Wenatchee 7: Outfought, outdriven, and generally outclassed, a big Stadium team with 12 lettermen beat out Wenatchee's purple and gold warriors in or sure-fire thriller. Purple and Gold triumph in snow tight: Playing in an inch of snow the Panther cats, although decisively outgained in yardage, clawed their way over- via aerial attack-the Cashmere Bulldogs for a 20-6 win in their twentieth annual Armistice Day classic. Cats lead Pups merry chase: A big Turkey Day crowd was doomed to disap- pointment when, slipping on a snowy grid, our aerial bombardment back- fired and We took it on the chin from Ellensburg I2-O. BASKETBALL With about 100 boys turning out for basketball at the beginning of the season, Coach Hex Scott had little trouble in choosing a championship team which proceeded to prove its worth by taking the district championship and by doing very well indeed in the state meet also. This season's starting lineup, Crawford, Lyts, Young, Provo, and Iessup, were all returning lettermen, and along with Lolos, Hinricks, Thompson, Wright, Taylor, Snyder, Lannoye, Smith, Sperline, and Thrapp formed the squad for 1941. Composing the team were two seniors, two sophomores, and eleven juniors. Therefore practically the same team will be returning to see action next year. This year's varsity was exceptionally small, but on that account was ex- ceptionally fast also, and all through the season showed fine sportsmanship and clean play, which made it a pleasure for us to watch them in action and for other teams in competition against them. Besides these A-squaddersf' the Kitten and B squads should receive a share of the glory of this hoop season. About fifteen turned out regularly on the former and ten or so on the latter. The personnel of both saw plenty of action in outside competition and intramural conflict and will offer some good material for the varsity in coming years. The boys who went to the state tourney in Seattle showed their mettle when they took Cle Elum, which was supposed to cop top honors there, in the first round of battle. Even when we lost our second game, the 'gang stayed rugged and drove on to gain their revenge for losing to St. Iohn by defeating Port Angeles. However, victory was short-lived, for Lincoln High refused to bow down, and the Panthers were set in seventh place. That is the sideline of the girls of the athletic department. These smooth athletes devote their time to perfecting their abilities, promoting sportsmanship, and having real fun. This season began with a fast-moving round-robin badminton tournament. Some thirty teams entered into competition and the finals found the couples of Cusick and Bock and Foster and Bise at the top. Volleyball produced six good teams, and for many nights these girls fought for Winners' laurels. For the first time in many seasons the lone senior team annexed the basketball crown, but not before downing six freshmen and junior teams. Real competition was seen on the maple court this year. Not yet rated as major sports but gaining steadily in popularity are tumbling and badminton. The mat girls flashed purple and gold satin uniforms and built pyramids that Would make the Egyp- tians envious. The mermaids churned the aqua marine twice a Week-some learning the art, some mastering the antics ot diving, and some becoming use- ful lifesavers. Playday is the thing-so declared some thirty girls each Saturday of the year. Other schools were invited to these gala events. Games were played: new friends were made: and athletics for girls was placed on a higher level. GIRLS' SPORT MANAGERS Row 1. Ogilvic, Davis, Foster, Wade, Crimmons, Smith, Nlundt SWIMMING Leavers. A sand box and a play house Were put up in part of the cooking room, to entertain the children, While tricycles and various other toys were kept handy in case interest Waned. A very amus- ing rhythm band Was formed, with the children taking the major parts. Each child kept time to the piano acco paniment by tapping Wooden blocks, sticks, or miniature drums.
