Each member was called upon often during the year to take over actual classes and conduct them as well as possible, even it little time for preparation was given. Those interested in elementary work were placed in elementary class- rooms,-usually when no qualified teacher substitute was available, and our people were praised by principals and teachers for their good work. Social high points are the spring cover-dish when college friends are guests, and the installation dinner near the close of the school year. Miss Irwin is chapter sponsor. Putting on a football game half-time show requires many hours of planning, rehearsal, and practice on the field. The concert work of this group is outstanding, and here again, many hours of practice outside regular school time are responsible for the high degree of artistry displayed by the musicians. District and state ratings of superior have been won over past years. Mr. Gene Greco, director, demands and re- ceives performance of an almost perfect nature. The team started off slow, losing to Brook- field and Toronto. Both of these games could have been won by either team, depending on the breaks of the game. After that came undefeated Chester, who came in for an easy win, but left on the short end of a T9-l3 score. The next week, the locals traveled to Canton Lehman, only to lose to the Bull- dogs. The fired- up Bengals, after a series of rushing plays, hit pay- dirt when halfback John Long ran a 30-yard double reverse. Chester then took over, but the stubborn Wellsville line would not budge, and they were forced to punt. Early again in the 2nd quarter, after a series of sustained drives, quarterback Andy Holowaty slipped over from the 2-yard line. Wells- ville's determined line gave not at all, and the half ended 12-O Wellsville. New Coaches: New Techniques William Radd, head coach, came to Wellsville from Irondale. He graduated from Mississippi State with a B.A. in Physical Education, and coached at Carthage, Missis- sippi. .lack McDevitt, assistant, graduated from Fairmont State, West Virginia, with a B.A. in Physical Education. He coached in North Carolina before coming to Wellsville. After leaving us for a year in California, he re- turned to Wellsville in 1955. Carl Firm, assistant, is in his first coach- ing assignment here this year. He gradu- ated from Kent State University in 1957. Chester came back strong and hit for their first score of the game. Later in the third quarter, Chub Carter barrelled over from the 5-yard line, and Holowaty carried for the extra point: Wellsville 19, Chester 6. About the middle of the fourth quarter, Chester scored their final touchdown, and the game ended with the Bengals on the long end of the 19-13 tally, than-li.-s l irin. In one game their play was terrific, and in the next they could not do any- thing right. Many games were lost by a narrow margin, often by the entire team having a bad night at the foul line. With the right breaks we could have won 5 or 6 more games. In the first game of the season, East Palestine won in overtime. Against Lisbon and East Liver- pool, the team seemed to fall apart in the second half. The Bengals bounced back to beat Mingo in a hard-fought contest. But after this great display, the Orange and Black allowed Bellaire St. Jchn's to emerge the victor. Again, after playing good ball the first halves, we lost the next two games to Toronto and Steubenville Central, The fourth straight loss came at the CUTS hands of Chester. Then the team seemed to come to life, and won four of their next six games, f- Newell, Bellaire St. Johnfs, Steubenville Central, and avenged themselves on Chester, The team gave Salem, the fifth-ranked team in the state, one of their toughest games of the year, before going down in glorious defeat. Against Goshen Union and Toronto, the Bengals couldn't seem to get the right combination going to win, but came back against Weirton Madonna. ln the last game of the regular season, Wellsville lost a second time to East Liverpool. ln tournament play, Wellsville whipped Jeffer- son Union in its first contest. This year the comedy-melo- drama Arsenic and Old Lace by Jo- seph Kesselring was chosen. It is the judgment of the directors, Mrs. Helen Welch and Mrs. Nova Runyan, that it is wiser to do a play that ran successfully on Broadway, than to choose a lesser, even if cheaper, play. Aresnic and Old Lace is a good play, and this year's cast rose nobly to their parts. The stage setting became the living room of the Brewster sisters, who, in charity and loving kindness, caused the sudden, painless demise of any elderly, homeless, and lonely old person who came along. Villainly, em- bodied in Jonathan, the black sheep nephew, and Right, exemplified by the normal nephew, Mortimer, clash, but all turns out well. Everyone worked hard and made Arsenic and Old Lace a financial as well as an artistic success. Sisters: Nelson. We-If-hz Teddy 84 Witherspoon: l'i-llt-V, JL'lllxlIlSQ Lovers: Knox.
