Its first aim is to provide students with the opportunity to participate in school government. Secondly, it emphasizes good citizenship and character. Third, it trys to influence an interest in students in worthwhile activities which make for the betterment of the school. Through elected representatives from each homeroom, students take part in various school projects. The council members operate the candy bar stand, conducts the Red Cross drive, maintain a stamp bank, and have entire charge of the school savings program. All chapels have been planned and conducted by the council with the co- operation oi the Wellsville Ministerial Association. Another project closely related to the citizenship aim is the annual spring-cleaning campaign. Student activities which the Student Council has organized include the Thursday night recreation program and the Saturday night dances, which are open to students and alumni. Because there were so many band students who had graduated, we had beginners to break in at band camp. We have risen to our feet again under the capable leadership of our new director, Mr. Lincoln Naumoif. We started the season by going to band camp, Later we played at all the football games and entertained the football fans with drills and formations during the halftime. Winding up the marching season, the band put on a cham- pionship show for the Wellsville-East Liverpool football game. Because there was no band contest this year, the Wellsville Band retained the County Championship Title for the third consecutive year. This year the band will lose nine Seniors. Never-the-less, we hope to reach greater heights of achievement. The support of the band by the parents and other citizens of Wellsville, the fine work of the director, and the interest taken in the band by the students have all contributed to the success of this organization. Hard practice helped to make the Spring Festival a worth-while achievement. In April, the band held a banquet in The First Christian Church followed by their annual Military Ball in the gymnasium. The club meets once a month, in the Home Economics room, to enjoy various programs planned by a capable committee headed by Betty Kindle. The members have been entertained with a style show, a tea, a cosmetic party, and a Halloween party. A., .n . Head Coach Michael Rodak Although the 1949 Bengals came up with an unimpressive football record of nine setbacks in the same number of starts, they took it in their stride. With the exception of two or three letter- men of the previous season, the entire squad was inexperienced, but this, nor the fact that they were small as a whole, didn't stop them from trying. The team should be congratulated on their fine spirit of trying when the odds were so great against them. The captain-el ect of the Orange and Black for 1949, chosen by the members of the squad at a football banquet, was Senior Ralph Fusco. The squad was under the leadership of a very capable coaching staff headed by Coach Michael Rodak and assistants, L. V. Ebenhack and Frank Solak. The Bengals opened the season in a mild manner without any explosive play but, as time passed, the team improved immensely. Thus far, the defending champs have enjoyed one of the best seasons in Wellsville-'s basketball annals. Everyone of the varsity players have played outstanding ball throughout the entire campaign. Opening the season against Springfield Township, Coach Solak's starting five was comprised of towering letterman Charlie Vaughn, standing 6'3 at the pivot slot, 6'2 Ronnie Green and 6 foot Ralph Mellott at the two forward posts. At the guard posts were Jack Frontone standing 5'11 and 5'7 Albert Maylone. Also showing great capability at their respective positions were Joe La Scola measuring 5'9 and 6'3 Willie Tompkins. Both are Juniors and will return next year to claim a berth. 5'11 Tom Shultz, who showed much promise during the early part of the season, received an injured ankle and was forced to postpone his playing until next year. It is all these boys who are hoping and striving to protect and retain their Sectional Crown which they helped win last season. The boys are primed and waiting for the Sectional Tournaments that are drawing near. Meanwhile, Coach L. V. Ebenhaclds Orange and Black Jayvees are also sport- .ing a correspondingly good record. Outstanding performers on the little Bengal's squad are Eddie Satow, Bob Mundy and Joe Renicker. These boys also dressed for varsity ball and readily saw action. Also showing much great play are John Viscoglosi, Don Reynolds, and Tom Miller. Managers: Norman Ryder Nunzio Lombardozzi Bob Whatkins Pictured: N. Ryder, N. Lombardozzi Not Pictured: B. V. Ebenhack. WONDERLAND OF HEARTS We Y-Teens feel that the annual Y-Teen Sweetheart Dance will be considered one of the most successful dances of the year. The dance was held February 11, on Saturday. All the girls worked exceptionally hard to make this :lance a success. The decorations followed the scheme of a typical valentine dance. The ceiling was a mass of lacy hearts, extending from one end of the gym to the other. Around the sides were cupids, silhouettes, hearts, and valentines, all Dainted by John Mclntire. Mary Frontone, in charge of decorations, did a splendid job. Small attractive programs were made by Marjorie Harkins and her committee. Bill Heiss's orchestra furnished the music. Leading the Grand March was Betsy Fraser, president, and her escort, Ralph Frontone. Faculty members and wives, along with board members, were invited. The Y-Teen sponsors are: Mrs. Estelle Elton, Miss Mahala Ingram, and Miss Luella Thompson. ,, 2325 f , 1 Z0-H 'ill 5 ,H T, , Z U-K L 1 -I ik , , Z: 4 - Y V l Fi 4. Kickapoo Juice Csweet ciderl and doughnuts were served at intermission. The prizes this year were large white mugs trimmed in black, with the words Sadie Hawkins' Dance '50 painted on theni in black letters. The 1949 Juniors spent a great deal of time and hard work in planning and preparing for this occasion. As we entered the dance, we stepped through the door and passed under a trellis of real roses of yellow, red and pink. Then we saw lattice work, beautifully decorated with roses, surrounding the entire garden. On the terrace, trimmed with pa s t el -colored awnings, was Eddie Junemann's Orchestra. To make the scene even more romantic the stars were shining brightly. a few clouds were scattered in the sky, and the moon was beaming on the many dancing couples. The high light of the dance was The Crowning, which preceded the Grand March. Leading the Grand March was our prom Queen, Ruby Henthorn, and her escort, Fred Smith. Next in line was Dick Bartram, president of the class, accompany- ing Doris Smith. Helen French, Prom Queen of 1948, and her escort came next. Following them was the Queen's Court consisting of Janet Miller, Enxilie Glenn, Helen Nicholson, and Carolyn Rose. Both the Prom Queen and her Court were selected by the me mber s of the Junior Class by popular vote. All Junior and Senior couples who attended the dance had a very enjoyable evening.
