Y ,yi Hestory of School wild game ard following the war path. 'Perhaps' they came near th, very spot where Wellsville High school is now located to meet for their yearly festival, the Pow-Wow. Here all the young and the old, ent-red with zest in the sports, contests and dances. Sirce the coming of the white man with his education and learning, the Indian has slowly disappeared and but few traces are left. One of the first signs of the new civilization was a crudeglog cabin, the school building, which was situated on the northwest corner of th Joe Sloan farm just south of the residerce of Chas. Thorn. ' When this log cabin burned a school building was erected in th north- west corner of the lots now owned by J. B. Cramer, just east of the Steven- son property Later it was: found that more ground and a la 'ger building were needed and a site on the north side of Third street between Main and Locust was purchased The schoolhous. was moved to the center of this site. After being repaired and enlarged it was used until 1881 when a larger building became imperative. At this time there were more than one hundred persons of school age in the district During the summer of 1881 a new building was erected. It was occu- pied immediately and two teachers were employed. In 1901 a two room addi- tion was built. Meanwhile the school,had grown. In 1887 the course of study included eleven grades, a higher school school course. In 1904 a four year high school course was installed and by 1907 six ' i teachers were -employed. There was anvaddition of a Domestic Science and ,U Normal Training department, in 1911. Each year students from adjoining 0 X schools Were enrolled and the situation became so crowded that in 1911 the , A ' question of securing a new site was taken up. June 26, 1912, a special elec- 4 fa tion was called to select a new location and what is known as the Shawen ' site was chosen. This site is composed of 69-A acres and lies at the west end X of Sixth street, two blocks from Main street. It is an excellent location N and furnishes plenty of playground.
