THE TIMES OF YOUR LIFE' WELLSTON HIGH SCHOOL WELLSTON, OHIO 45692 Bobbi Jo Ervin, Editor GOOD MORNING YESTERDAY X-RAY 77 YOU WAKE UP Waking up to new horizons makes each day in itself a beginning. Creating memories by pushing the past farther in the back of our minds allows us room to grow. As we meet life’s challenges by growing older and more mature, we also realize our whole life is ahead of us. The entire world is ours to explore and education is the key that opens life’s door. TABLE OF CONTENTS Opening 1- 9 Seniors 10-33 Faculty 34- 43 Happenings 44- 85 Underclassmen .. 86-107 Junior High 108-123 Advertisements .. 124-136 2 AND TIME HAS SLIPPED AWAY We always seem surprised when another birthday rolls by or when summer is looking us in the face again. Like the saying Time sure flies when you’re having fun”, how true this is when you're thinking in terms of your high school career. It seems like only yesterday you were making out a freshman schedule and now you're making that final walk across the stage to receive your diploma. Don’t be too surprised when you realize “Time Has Slipped Away in high school and it is time to say Fare-Well to W.H.S. 3 THEN SUDDENLY IT’S HARD TO FIND What am I to do? It’s a hard question, isn’t it! Decision after decision is made because they have to be made. Yet, when the chips are down, you somehow seem to come through. It's a wonderful feeling to know that you have accomplished something on your own, just you and your self-reliance. You went that extra yard for the first down, you stayed up until 2:00 studying lines for the play, you gave up part of your vacation to march in the hot sun or you were the one to run those 20 extra laps while others cheated. It wasn't easy but you finished and what did you accomplish from the experience? Self-respect, and really isn’t that what it’s all about. 4 THE MEMORIES YOU LEFT BEHIND Leaving high school and friends is a hard and sad experience for any senior, but memories you leave to underclassmen will linger long after your absence. By participation you show leadership in what you do and set a certain guideline for others to follow. Set a good example for others to follow and leave memories that you can be proud of and others can cherish. 5 REMEMBER Do you remember . . . Your first day as a freshman, or your very first band or choir show, what about the time you had your chance to be a hero, but instead you fumbled and lost the game, the prom, or your first REAL love? Finally you entered into a whole new stage in life . . . the high school years. Then . . . just as soon as you enter, you are completing a stepping stone in the game of life. This time can be joyous or painful for a graduate. Yet, the thrill and excitment of entering into the world can be a wonderful and exciting experience. It could be thought of in terms of a closed door waiting to be entered and explored. 6 DO YOU REMEMBER? THE TIME’S OF YOUR LIFE “There is a right time for everything. A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, a time to harvest; a time to kill, a time to heal; a time to destroy, a time to rebuild; a time to cry, a time to laugh; a time to grieve, a time to dance; a time for scattering stones, a time for gathering stones; a time to hug, a time not to hug; a time to find, a time to lose; a time for keeping, a time for throwing away; a time to tear, a time to repair; a time to be quiet, a time to speak up; a time for loving, and a time for hating.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 .................IN 77 These have been the times of your life in 77, hope you enjoyed them. Yesterday’s happenings are only good for a quick smile or a glimmer of tears. What is important is tomorrow. The time’s of your life will either be good or bad, depending on how you look at them. Everything can not be a bed of roses, take the good for what it is and except the bad for what good can come from it. The time’s of your life can be fullfilling or empty, successful or unsuccessful depending on what you do now. Remember “Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life.” f 1. Under the capable leadership of Head coach Jody Michael and his dedicated staff of assistant coaches, Rick Perdue, and Steve West, the often-time smaller and less experienced Rocket team time and time again proved their ability to compete with any area team. The season could best be described as a rebuilding period. With the utilization of several fine underclassmen the team will, in the near future, be a group of experienced and mature athletes. Even with the loss of thirteen seniors last year this will be no deterrent to the fine group of returning lettermen and other experienced underclassmen. With these factors in mind the future of the Golden Rockets is an extremely promising one. 47 QUEEN KATHY REIGNS OVER HOMECOMING 77 On the chilly evening of October 29 the traditional homecoming festivities began with the parade around the football field. Miss Kathy Stephenson was selected by the student body of WHS to reign as the 1976 Homecoming Queen. The pictures on this page recapture the happy moments as Kathy was announced queen. 1. The responsibility of advisor was assumed by Mr. William Fyffe because Mr. Jim Sheets left the school system. Each grade from seventh to twelfth is represented. At the end of the school year an election is held where five new representatives are chosen from each grade and a new president and vice president are elected. During the 76-77 year student council accomplished a number of helpful projects for the school and the community like the painting and distributing of trash cans to help clean the school yard, collecting money for muscular dystrophy, having a party for J-Vac Industries, and sponsoring dances for Jr. High and the High School. 52 I. The dream of marching fully attired in new uniforms became a reality this year with the help of a generous and supportive community. The highlight of the marching season consisted of a first place trophy captured at the Miamisburg Band Competition. In the Spring the entire group of bands, including the fifth and sixth grade bands, directed by Mr. Bill Shumate, and the Intermediate and Senior Concert Bands presented their annual concert to an appreciative audience. CHOIR OPUS The WHS SENIOR CHOIR, under the direction of Miss Sandra Nodruff, is a very active group that puts in many hours of hard work throughout the school year. The time and devotion that the choir puts into their practices can be described in two words—Spring Sing. Although Spring Sing is the main activity and goal of the choir, it also provides the student body with assemblies for special occasions as Thanksgiving, Christmas, including the Handel’s Messiah, and graduation. The Senior Choir is an organization of devoted students that the High School can be proud of. From the Senior Choir comes a small singing ensemble—OPUS VI. Opus VI performs at school assemblies and also at various social and community events. It is a self-supporting group that practices weekly. Besides singing perfection they also have a fun time and develop friendships toward one another. 60 6 1. SENIOR CHOIR MEMBERS: Row 1: D. Staten. P. Nichols. S. Phipps. J. Hamer. G. Waldron. C. After losing only two seniors from the past team, the Rockettes came back strong with good leadership from the returning lettermen. After long practices of solid setting, bumping, and spiking it finally paid off with many victories over rivals and opponents. Next year’s squad will be highly inexperienced with only one returning Varsity player, but with practice, they will strive to be more improved and win many victories for WHS in the future. rftLLSro 1. Two of these wins were at the hands of the Athens Bulldogs and the third was an exciting and well earned victory over arch rival Jackson in the final game of the season. The record does not fully display the excitement and action that the two teams provided to the fans of Wellston. With the return of several fine underclassmen the future of the Wellston Rockets is an extremely exciting one. 3 4 VARSITY BASKETBALL ROCKETS — Row 1: Left to Right: J. Royster, S. Pugh, M. Conley. Two excellent examples are — the Gymnastics and Softball Teams. Due to bad weather the gymnastic team could not attend all the matches, but practices continued in the cold gym through January and next year’s team will be ready for action. Practicing daily the Softball Team built stamina that makes a team successful. Next year, boys beware, girl’s sports should be better than ever and one of the main topics at WHS. 8 1. This fable takes place in a tiny kingdom ruled by a very aggressive queen and a mute king. The kingdom is in a sad state because a princess of royal blood has to be found for the handsome prince to marry or no one would be permitted to be married. Even when a princess is found she must pass a test devised by the queen. The queen is domineering; therefore, she draws up a difficult test that even a true princess could fail. 72 7 1. Prince Dauntless, Jeff Plummer, sings a song of love to the Princess Winnifred, Melissa Kisor. 2. The Minstrel. The cafeteria was changed into a beautiful ballroom after many long hours of decorating by the juniors. Following a buffet dinner, the couples danced to the prom music of “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow”. To complete a happy evening, the senior class sponsored a disco after party with Disc Jockey Uncle Dougger providing the music. After several hours of dancing, couples departed to various places for breakfast. 1. Junior and Senior Class officers were the guests at the banquet and were seated at the head table. 2. Decorations, colors of the rainbow, were beautifully arranged. 3. Bob and Russell sang a duet. 4. Opus VI provided musical entertainment at the Banquet. 5. Faculty and students enjoyed the prom. 6. Pegg and Chris enjoyed the slower music. 7. Everyone enjoyed the buffet banquet. 8. Gail welcomed students and faculty to the banquet. 9. Tom and Michelle joined Mike and Amber after dancing. 75 NHS INDUCTION One of the highest honors that can be accorded a student is election to the WHS Chapter of National Honor Society. These students chosen by the faculty to be members of the society are honored at an annual banquet. The banquet, held May 25, also serves as the annual induction of new NHS members. At the conclusion of the induction ceremony, Dr. Dwight Pugh, from Ohio University, spoke to the group and emphasized the need for students to be themselves. The evening concluded with the introduction of honor students by National Honor Society Advisor, Mr. Mitchell Baker. 4 SCHOLARS MERIT HONORS AND AWARDS 1. TOP RANKING JUNIORS: Debbie Dever, D.J. Under the leadership of Head coach Pat Hendershott and his valuable right hand man Vance Ashley, the team showed vast improvement from last year. Led by several fine senior athletes the Rockets constantly turned in thrilling performances over quite capable opponents. Though the Rockets are extremely young they have a fine chance of capturing all of the gold next year. i 1. VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM: Row 1: G. Speraw, J. Montgomery, K. Parsons, B. Gill, L. Settles. K. Under the capable coaching of Steve West the trackmen went through the season losing several meets by severely thin margins. The team is bolstered by many underclassmen who, in the future, should provide the Wellston fan with some spectacular performances. With this in mind we look upon the past as a stepping stone to the top. i 4 1. VARSITY TRACK TEAM First Row: M. DeStephen, G. Martindlll, T. Baker, P. May, T. Wheatley, D. Lewis.
