It is here that many new faces are seen, many new and different activities are engaged in, and many new places are explored. The seniors marched into the auditorium to “Pomp and Circumstance” as performed hy Aria Gilliland and Bobbi Jo Ervin. Invocation was given by Father DeVille. Entertainment was provided by the WHS Choir who sang “Cry Aloud” by John Ness Beck, “Annie’s Song” by John Denver, “The Way We Were” by Marvin Hamlish. The highlight of commencement was the class address given by WSAZ-TV News Commentator Bos Johnson. Valedictorian Denise Hambrick, and salutatorian Charlie Milliken, gave their speeches. Superintendent of the Wellston City Schools, Mr. Ralph McCormick, presented the diplomas. Graduates and guests then joined in the singing of the ALMA MATER. The benediction was given by Reverend Robert Davis. 21 In the light of Watergate and several local problems, W HS Seniors formed fictitious “clubs”. These “clubs” such as the FPA (Future Presidential Aids) were designed to expose the ideas of WHS Seniors on certain subjects. The upper left picture shows FPA members practicing their wire tapping. The upper right shows the Crust Crimpers experimenting with paper. The middle right pictures the American Book Binders attempting to continue the use of outdated and worn books at WHS. n Class Day—Senior Fun As part of the activities during commencement week, seniors held their traditional class day. Remembering the past with class histories from elementary school, predicting the future with the class prophecy, and reading the class will in which seniors leave such items as study hall seats, good times, and “abilities” to remaining students are the standard activities of the day. Highlighting the program were the gifts, mostly humorous, sometimes serious, but all given in fun, presented to the faculty and staff members. One embarrassing moment for the seniors was when Mr. Lintala didn’t need the razor given him as he had secretly shaved both his thick heard and mustache the night before. 1D££CS£0N HIGH SCHOOL DENNY' PEARCE SEOAL HWT CHAMP DISTRICT MARI LANCASTER ' Denny Pearce and Mike Joh nson. competing in wrestling and track respectively, earned many awards and accolades from league, district, and state officials. Denny amassed a two year record of 26 wins and only 4 losses. Pearce won the SEOAL tournament and had the district locked-up but was dis- Jualified due to illegal holds. Mike ohnson blistered many area tracks with his record breaking times in the 880. Johnson was first in SEOAL 880, sectional 880, district 880, and fourth in the state 880. He placed fourth in Cleveland at the Octinary. Active Seniors The 1975 school year was highlighted by the achievements and exploits of the senior athletes (some of which are pictured on this page). Seniors fared well in all endeavors and the Class of 1975 will probably be remembered as one of the most active and achievement motivated classes of the decade. Not for many years has Wellston High School done as well athletically. VOLLEYBALL: Top, left to right: T. Baker, N. Martin, L. Hilterbrand, C. Estep, C. Sprinkles, P. Farley. FACULTY Administrative Leaders—Superintendent, Board of Education The School Board and the Superintendent, leaders of a school system, are responsible for providing the best education possible for the students of its district. The maintenance of school buildings and property, providing books and materials, securing faculty, providing transportation, and wrestling with an ever-increasing inflationary budget are the major responsibilities to which the school board and superintendent have dedicated themselves. 1. Mr. William Lockhart, Principal of Wellston High School, takes this and his many other tedious tasks in stride as he strives to run an orderly plant so that the education process can work. The dedication of Mr. Lockhart to his job, that of maintaining a wholesome atmosphere where learning can be achieved, is reflected in both the student body and the high school faculty as each strives to maintain high scholastic achievement and ideals. Behind any good executive is a secretary—a person who can handle small tasks and duties to help lighten the load of her boss. Mrs. Sadie Ford, secretary to Mr. Lockhart, and, fondly known to faculty and students alike as Sadie, fulfills this much needed assistance. 31 Dedicated to a Principle—Helping Others 1. Mrs. Hendershott has taught at Wellston High School for a total of 23 years. Through these years she provided her students with an excellent education in such subjects as English and Latin. The year 1974 marked the beginning of Mrs. Hendershott’s retirement. Because a Latin teacher was not available for the 1974-75 school year, Mrs. Hendershott returned to teach this subject. We are sincerely appreciative for the dedication of this woman and we extend to Mrs. Hendershott a very special “Thanks” and wish her many happy years of retirement. Principal, William Dunn. 37 Our Leaders Despite a variety of adversities during the 1974-75 school year, the faculty, somehow, always managed to provide a suitable atmosphere for the education of WHS students. It takes a considerable degree of dedication on the part of a teacher to approach the same faces day after day and still present an interesting and educational lesson. Bomb threats and the slow monotonous routine of the midyear, make it easy to see why many of the faculty members gain a few “gray hairs” during the progression of a school year. 38 ACTIVITIES Student Council Hey! Give me a break and read the next fourteen lines (give or take a few) about the WHS Student Council. The Council did: the sign out by Banquet, the dummy burning, kept the sign in front of the school up, held a mock gubernatorial election and other assemblies, helped with Ohillco Days, and propagated itself by holding an election. The Council did not achieve: a smoking area, a working exchange system, revamping of study hall and numerous other ills. Good luck to the 1975-76 Student Council. These students are sponsored by the Wellston Hotary Club, and they stay in the homes of Rotary Club members. This year, WHS had two students from Brazil, Fabio Lobo and Denise Celia, and one student from Japan, Keiko Ohba. The 1975-76 school year will be an exciting new challenge for Melanie Kibler, Aria Gilliland, and Julie Evans, as they will be exchange students. Melanie and Aria will be going to Brazil and Julie to Japan. EXCHANGE STUDENTS: Pictured top left: Keiko Ohba who came from Japan. Pictured top middle: Fabio Lobo who came from Brazil. Queen Tessie Baker A Night To Be Treasured—“Poems, Prayers, and Promises” The 1974 Homecoming was expanded into a two day affair with the annual football game being held on Friday, October 11, and the Homecoming Dance being held on Saturday, October 12. Homecoming Queen Tessie Baker and her court reigned over both festivities. Even though WHS lost the football game spirits were not dampened as happy couples danced to the music of “Cotton Mill”. “Poems, Prayers, and Promises”, was the theme chosen by the Tri-Hi-Y for the 1974 Homecoming. 45 Student Council Holds First Annual Sweetheart Dance The Student Council in honor of Valentines day held the First Annual WHS Sweetheart Dance. The Central gym was dreamily decorated and Kathy Oths was crowned queen in a regal ceremony. A good time was had by all who attended. 46 The Tri-Hi-Y Sponsors Annual Visit to Dogpatch USA. 1 he Iri-Hi-Y successfully staged this years Sadie Hawkins Day Dance. Music was provided by the Cobras. Coach Bill Fyffe donated the powers vested in him by Joe Michaels and acted as Marryin’ Sam. Many people attended in outlandish garb but this only added to the good times and merriment of this annual event. 47 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL: Kneeling, left to right: Vickie Arthur, Tessie Baker, Melanie Kibler. The girls’ softball team had a trying season, hut the 1975-76 team, because of experience, promises to be better. Participation in gymnastics, as a team, was limited to compulsory routines with the team competing in five meets. The WHS team scored well in each of these meets. The girls participated in the district meet, not as a team, but in individual competition with several girls making excellent scores. 50 SOFTBALL TEAM: Top left: Row 1, Left to right: Connie Skinner, Vickie Arthur, Tcssie Baker, Patty Farley, Melanie Kiblcr, Ellie Hudson, Janet Scott, Cookie Estep, Michele Massie. Under the guidance of second year mentor, Joe Michael, the leatherclads continued to climb out of the SEOAL cellar by finishing in fifth place, the Rockets crushed Logan and thereby ended fifteen years of Logan domination, and for the first time in WHS history the Rockets beat Meigs. Wellston had many standouts achieve league recognition—Denny Pearce, Wes Perry and Rick McCarley were all-league, and Keith Henry and Randy Peoples received honorable mention. 55 The Wellston Golden Rocket grapplers, led by second year mentor Larry Blackstone, completed a disappointing season with only a few team wins. However, a foundation has been laid for future teams of league championship caliber. Individuals stood out on the team and morale was led by team captains: Mike Johnson, Wes Perry, and league champ Denny Pearce. 57 Roundballers End Losing Streak VARSITY ROUNDBALLERS: Row 1, left to right: Steve Arnold, Mike Vi alts, Charlie Milliken, Jim Derrow, Terry Gill. The purpose of this special program was to instruct seventh and eighth grade boys in the fundamentals of basketball. This program took the place of seventh and eighth grade interscholastic participation with other schools. Coaches Fyffe and Albert spoke favorably of the potential of these young athletes. Through the use of this program and by emphasizing team effort among all the players, it is believed that these young men will be winners in the future. I he program was conceived and initiated by Wellston High School Athletic Director, Jody Michael. 114 WOLFPACK: Opposite page middle: Left to right: Danny Lockhart, Joey Patton, Kevin Patterson, Don Osbourne, Brad Potter, Greg Martindale, Rohhie Wilbur. Coalton has been a part of the Vfellston City School System for many years but in the past has been carelessly neglected. For this reason, pictures ot the Coalton seventh and eighth grades, pictures of the Coalton Junior High Faculty and Principal, and pictures of Coalton athletics and activities have been included. Hopefully, in the future, Coalton will no longer go unnoticed. Pictured on this page are some junior high achievements that merit recognition.
