X-Ray 1973 Presents The World is a Circle Editor Julie Kibler Wellston High School Wellston, Ohio a, Underclassmen 42-73 Advertising 126-136 Student Life 74-125 Wellston—a Little Bit Of Shangri-La All kinds of people make up the world and all kinds of people make up Wellston High School: tall, short, fat, skinny, weak, strong, smart, slow, rich and poor. From being with such a variety of people, students learn how to get along with other people as well as studying the academics and trades. Cooperating with teachers, pressure to make good marks, and peer pressure prepares the students of our school to take their place in the world. Wellston received into their homes and hearts a foreign exchange student from Bolivia, Irwin Torrico. Irwin joined the Wellston students in many activities and, indeed, became our friend. Irwin came to Wellston in February, 1972, and left in February, 1973. In this time he learned much about the United States and our community, and we in turn learned much about our Spanish speaking neighbors to the South. s 8 Today belonged to us ... . Tomorrow belongs to you The school year of 1972-73 was a special year for the graduating Seniors. Because of what we said, did, and thought, we made it “our” year, and 1972-73 will always bring a certain memory of a mood that can’t quite be — ever again. 9 Pam Bartlett Terry Brandau Tom Brenner Linda Brewer Margie Brown Jennifer Ghearing Carey Larry Cartwright Mark Chevalier Karen Christner Helen Colley Martha Cox Diane Daily n John Davis Joyce Davis Melody Davis Larry Dixon Steve Downard Keith Dye Susie Emmert Ric Faught Ed Formyduval Clara Fox Willie Fox Pam Fraley Terri Gettles Pat Gilliland Christine Goodrich Ralph Gueltig Paige Hambrick Randy Hatten Susan Haynes Hollingshead Debbie Henry Rick Henry Melvin Hill Jim Hogan James Hollingshead 13 Senior Most Ambitious Best Personality Class Paige Hambrick—Charlie Snare Sherri Maloney—Joe Maloney Tami Snider— Best Looking Janie Sprinkles—Randy Hatten Mark Chevalier—Helen Colley Sally Wilson—Alan Arthur Most Popular Bill Starkey—Carmen Rider Most Athletic Willetta Scites—David Souders 15 Superlatives Clowns Rick Angies Neatest Dressed Carolyn Holtz Chris House Robert Householder Vickie Howell Cindy Howerton Teri Hunter Joyce Hutchison Grace Jeffries Becky James Susan Kemp Julie Kibler Richard Kisor 16 Sharon Little Paul Loudermilk Danny McManis Sherri Maloney George Mapes Pam Marsh Carla Matteson Charles Matthews Brenda Melvin Eddie Martin Mary Carol Martindill Debbie Massie Polly Miller Linda Monk Randy Mullins Bobbi Jo Nichols Jackie Nigh Mitzi Norton Linda Ousley Richard Owrey Charlotte Patterson Tim Patton Pam Osborne Perkins Rik Perkins 18 Chuck Phillips Suzanna Price Robert Pugh Diana Radcliffe John Rawlins Martha Rhodes Carmen Rider Joe Rife Arthur Robinson 19 Debbie Scharfenberger William Sickles Mark Silcott Charlie Snare Tami Snider Lynn Sorrell Lynn Johnson Sorrell David Souders Debbie Souders Donna Souders Sandy Speraw Janie Sprinkles Bill Starkey Fred Taylor Martha Buckley Tilley Vicki Tipton Barbara Tolbert Richard Walker Glenn Ward Danny Waugh Warren Waugh Sarah Whalen Brenda Whaley Dennis Whetstone Paul Wilbur Dave Williams Earl Williams 21 Roger Williams Wendy Willis Sally Wilson Roger Woodruff Charlie Wyckoff Terry Lynn Preston Wyckoff Not Pictured Russell Bishop Danny Doles Randy Duffy Ed Ginter Randy Jones James Rupert Terry Salyer Deborah Tilley Diane Tilley Janie Vance Class Officers And Homeroom Representatives Row I: T. Vernon, Ohio, and Wellston High School graduate, retired this year after 31 years of teaching in the Wellston School System. He entered Ohio State University, from which he graduated with a degree in fine arts. He furthered his technical education at the Columbus College of Art. Max Hendershott was the first art supervisor in the Wellston School System. He taught art in the grade school and junior high along with high school. He taught mechanical drawing for 24 years. For 20 years he taught art at Rio Grande College, discontinuing that six years ago. Wellston High School won’t quite be the same without “Shott” as he was one of the best liked teachers in Wellston High School. Edith Yingst Edith Yingst retired this year after teaching English and French at Wellston High School for the last five years. Mrs. Yingst previously taught English and French at Roosevelt Junior High School, Middletown, Ohio, for 2 years, taught English, French and Latin at Amanda Junior High School, Middletown, Ohio, for six years, and taught Latin at Hubbard High School, Hubbard, Ohio, for I and one half years bringing her teaching career to an end after 14 and one-half years of service. Mrs. Yingst has five children and many grandchildren to help her enjoy her retirement. Wellston High School sadly bids “adieu” to Edith Yingst. 34 Language Arts Left to right: Carol VanMeter, Maria DeCastro, Edith Yingst, Jean Lewis. Ida Mae Crabtree. Susan Hcndershott. Although Helen Colley and Phillip Dye had been teachers in the Wellston City Schools for many years they were retired. Mrs. Needham passed away suddenly during the middle of the school year. Jean Needham taught business, Phillip Dye taught Science, and Helen Colley taught the fifth grade at Central. These teachers taught a total of 87 years. The administration, faculty, and student body deeply mourn the loss of these devoted teachers. 41 Joe Argabright Charlie Arnold Margaret Arthur Steven Arthur Jewell Baker Bob Bethel Fred Bierhup Lula Black Steve Boyd Marilyn Brokaw Dave Brown Tillic Brown John Buckley Anita Howell Canter Curtis Cardwell Vanessa Case Mary Church Eric Colley Linda Colley Debbie Collins Brenda Compston Kathy Coon Angela Corvin 44 Lora Davis Marcie Davis Cheryl Dillengcr Phyllis Dillon Lorrie Douglas Tom Downard Rhonda Edwards Eila Ervin Terry Ervin Cathy Faught Jane Ann Fitch Scott Ford Paula Ganz Jeri Gill Melinda Gettlcs Vicki Grey Pam Heading Vicki Henry Bob Hill Richard Hollingshead Rex Holzapfel Kathy House Tony Hutchison Chuck Ingalls 46 47 Lcisa Jeffries Floyd Jenkins Jack Jenkins Steve Jenkins Carlcne Jolly Kelvin Jolly Jill Kibler Mary Ann Kisor Melody Kisor Kathy King Chuck King Dale Leach Roger Leach Donnas Littlejohn Jim Long Barbara Mahle Doug Mather Mickey Manring Tim Martin Salome McCarter Greg McCormick Kim McCumber Dave McKinniss Mike McKinniss Rick Young Martha Meade Tim Mercer Diane Morgan Cheryl Cox Martin Jon Nappcr Joy Norris Gail Norton 48 Terry Norton Herb Owrey Patty Parsons Innis Perry Einon Plummer Kathy Preston Rick Faulkner Becky Ray Bill Remy Linda Robinson Keith Ruckel Tim Saltsman Don Savage Debbie Shook Randy Simmons Becky Sirback Linda Steele Roger Stephenson Mike Stewart Wanda Straten Martha Thress Erwin Torrico Jay Tribby Penny Turvey Theresa Triplett Trent Vickers Forrest Vititoe Kenny Vititoe Brad Walburn Keith Walton Steve Walton Marilyn Ward 49 April Adams Anita Albright Bill Allen Bobby Allen Tom Appledorn Bobby Armstrong Tessic Baker Floyd Baker Paul Bales Philip Balser Tammy Balser Debbie Bartlett Danny Bartlett John Bennett Richard Bishop Sabrina Bishop Brenda Brady Brenda Brewer Gene Brewer Rick Burke Linda Cahoon Anita Cartwright Jewel Cash Gary Cline Doug Collins Cathy Conger Debbie Crabtree Valleri Crabtree Howard Curtis Donald Dalton Dinah Dixon Jerry Downard Mike Downard Scott Downard John Dunfee 50 Dave Eanes Jerry Emmert Diane Estep Pam Ewing Tom Ewing Christy Fain Milan Fain Patti Farley Paul Farleigh Gerald Faulkner Pauletta Fast Charlie Fletcher Tim Formyduval Mark Fox Mike Fraley Dick Frick 51 Hazel Frisby Eva Frisby Cindy Ghearing Dick Gilliland Joy Gillespie Stephanie Gillespie Keith Gilliland Kyle Gilliland Lula B. The four officers gave brief speeches on the purpose of the organization “to create an enthusiasm for Scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render Service, to promote worthy Leadership, and to encourage the development of Character in the Students.” After the new members took the pledge, they attended a reception held for them in the Home Economics Room. Ill Track Team Sets New Records A somewhat young and inexperienced track team hurdled their way to a successful season. Old records went down the drain while new ones were being set. The new Wellston High School records were set by Rick Angles in the 180 low hurdles, Greg McCormick topping his old record in the 2-mile, and the third by our mile relay team. These were just a few of the many highlights of the track season. 1)2 Kim McCumber gives invocation. Carmen Rider invites all to after party. Steve Jenkins welcomes everyone. 114 If You Don’t Know Me By Now A dash of food, a teaspoon of love, a pinch of music, and a cup of formality added to the touch of the Jr.-Sr. theme “If You Don’t Know Me By Now.” Decorated with green, pink, and yellow the high school represented the many moods of those attending. The prom was graciously presented by the Junior Class to honor the Seniors of 1973. For the Seniors this was an evening to remember but for the Juniors it was an evening to look forward to. This is truly one event all students look forward to attending with anticipation. Help Me Make It Through the Night “Help Me Make It Through The Night” was the appropriate theme for the after party. Mothers of the Seniors provided refreshments while the music was played by “Woodquilt.” All couples were very excited during the after party but most were worn drowsy by 4 a.m. In spite of this, everyone was disappointed because it was the end of the Jr.-Sr. event. This event was the Juniors last farewell to the Seniors. us Girls Interscholastic Track—a First for Wellston High School This year was the first year for girls interscholastic track. The girls competed in such events as the sprints, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, relay races, the distance runs. The season was very short, as many meets were cancelled because of rain. However, there were enough track meets for three girls to earn a varsity ‘W Kathy King, Cheryl Burke, and Toni Rider. 116 Awards Day Anita Yates received the SIOO Chandler Scholarship. Everything depends on where you are in the circle that never begins, nobody knows where the circle ends. And just because they say you're small, that doesn’t mean that you're small at all. And just the way a tiny branch is like a tree to a twig, to someone else you are big. 122 The world is a circle without a beginning and nobody knows where it really ends. Everything depends on where you are in the circle that’s spinning around, half of the time we are upside down. 123 124 As the world is a circle that never ends, so is education a circle that never ends. Some of us may spend more years in school and others may work, but each and everyone of us will learn more about life that too is a circle. The world is a circle without a beginning and nobody knows where it really ends. Everything depends on where you are in the circle that never begins, nobody knows where the circle ends.
