While it represents only a small part of each. The Year It Happened was a great year for all who let it be that. It had few major.' unusual happenings, but since trivialities make up the sum-total of life, so they comprise the majority of the happenings at Wellston High School. For many the year culminated a long, hard struggle. Perhaps we have reached the first terrace on the mountain of life, while the underclassmen are still climbing. The future, by definition, is uncertain; accordingly. what lies ahead is questionable. But since preparedness always pays the best dividends, we should continue as if there were a cloud cover ahead which our eyes cannot penetrate. However, in our efforts to achieve new goals and desires, it will be healthy to examine the past and reminisce upon old times. Because of this fact the 1972 X-RAY was prepared. . The staff is sure that the year’s events Shd memories are worthy of consideration. Pause, and travel through the school in 1972. The Year It Happened. Here, however we only reflected lives and scenes from a play which adults had written. Now it is our turn to write the lines for ourselves and the world. How well we will write these lines is unknown to all. Perhaps a blank page or a question mark would best symbolize the future in this sense. The National Honor Society is an organization comprised of students who display outstanding qualities in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. These members, who must maintain at least an 85 average, are selected by the faculty on secret ballot. Quite unique from services in the past, this year's induction had a completely new program as the old members went into the audience to call up the new members. Afterwards, a reception was held in the cafeteria. As the name would indicate, it is indeed an honor to gain admittance into this nation-wide society, and it is hoped that all new members will live up to their expectations. Hew Semi %emJeM Row I: A. The Wellston High School Senior Choir, under the fine direction of Sandra Nodruff, had another productive year which began with the Veterans’ Day Program. The Senior and Junior Choirs combined their talents to present the annual community Christmas Program. The Senior Choir also performed a Christmas Sing for the Rotarians, who rewarded them by presenting S200 to be used toward the purchase of new robes. A group of choir personnel also caroled the area rest homes. Many choir members took part in the Rotary Minstrel and the school play. The climax of the year was the annual Spring Sing. This performance shows the choir's ability to sing many types and moods of music. 60 Veterans Day assembly performance Senior Choir provides Rolarians with an enjoyable after-dinner program. After trudging through this ordeal (each member marching an average of 90 miles that week!), the band returned to Wellston to spend many rehearsal hours on the home football field. But the hard work was worth it; the WHS Marching Rockets, through their fine precision marching, maintained their title as the greatest band in Southeastern Ohio! Some may ask how these concepts could be used as the theme of a yearbook. We usually recognize a yearbook's purpose as being that of capturing only a certain part of our lives. Hut how can we really look at part of something without considering the whole? We must look at 1972 not as a year isolated by itself, but as one which fits into our whole lifetime, relative to both the past and the future. Although this yearbook emphasizes 1972. as, indeed, by definition, it must, we always end up thinking of other phases of our lives. This is especially true for the senior. The staff has tried to keep this book for everyone from grades seven to twelve, but if any one group should predominate, it is the senior that should. He looks at 1972 as a major vantage point for view ing his life. He can see behind himself and remember entering Junior High, facing his first day lost in the corridors of High School, sitting in study hall. He can see himself today, with diploma in hand, hopes in the other as he looks at the uncertainties of tomorrow. We the staff hope that in some way —through the preparation of this book—we have captured a very small part in the sum total of a lifetime. cktwwldqmrii Without much and varied help it would be impossible for any staff to produce a yearbook. The follow ing people and organizations have contributed in a very special way to make the 1972 X-RAY a success. Smith Studios Tin: SENTRY THE TELEGRAM Students and Faculty Patrons Mr. Cooper Mitchell Baker Photography Photography Photography- Co-operation Financial Assistance ICP Representative Advisor 135 A very special thanks to those staff members who worked diligently to complete the book. The Editor Jeff Simmons ................................................................... And so ends this tour of an American high school—one of the many segments of man's continuous striving for more knowledge. Indeed, for the hope of our mutual existence, this quest should never end—for an enlightened man is more able to adapt to differences among his fellow man and to settle his conflicts in a peaceful, lasting manner. It is for this reason that we have dedicated our yearbook to the everlasting search for human knowledge and, ultimately, world peace. 136 ■ . . . . - • . . - ■ . ; • y. - —.• - r ' - • ‘ “ ♦ ... i - • . - - • . • - vr- , — .;!• . . - .yj .. — —' - _c-, - _v. v .. . v n.-V-v 2«ffS5a -• .. _ • . 7 ' jl k f-'-o- vrrAtt: -£ ■- ,r - ?. ;eTiSWtf- V ,■ ; - + . : , 7Sr' •$ ••: , '• ■ ; ■ ' • .-■ •T- .-; h'$e r -t - ?.►.
