X - %uf w I WtUdoti tfujh School MeJUioti, Ohio Paula Fuller Anita Rider Feature Editor: Bonny Arthur Jo wood The laughter and all-encompassing sounds of hundreds of students filling the auditorium reflect the spirit ol youth. The athlete competing with his breath all but gone and every muscle tense and aching. The enlightening feeling of success for a seemingly impossible goal and reaching it. All these things are one and this is the happiness of belonging and being a part of Wellston High School. f 7 X-Houj T)dmtd to Swmtif This year the X-Ray Staff would like to dedicate the yearbook to Mrs. Elizabeth Swaney for her dedication and service to the teaching profession. Mrs. Swaney's previous teaching experience was at Coalton, but for the past seven years she has taught at Wellston High School. Though Mrs. Swaney has retired, she will live on in the memory of the countless number of students she has influenced. It is with much appreciation that we dedicate this year’s X-Ray to Elizabeth Swaney. 3 n Mmoum In memory of Judy Malone, our classmate. Judy was a cheerful and friendly person, whose warmth was felt by all those with whom she came in contact. She completed grades one through seven and it was during the middle of her eighth year of schooling that she became ill and passed away. The sorrow of Judy’s death was felt by all her classmates. We, the Class of 1971, dedicate this page of our X-Ray to her memory. It must be the spirit of everyone, both students and teachers. This spirit must come freely from the heart, and must be expressed in the cheerful giving of one’s time and energy to an endeavor. An individual with spirit, who gives of himself unselfishly to activities, not only benefits those around him, but even more important, enriches his own life. Happiness is striving. The striving of each student to acquire knowledge and to develop talents and character. It is the striving to do one’s best at all times and never to accept failure as being final. It is the striving to broaden one’s life as much as possible through the experiences which school offers. And perhaps most important of all, it is the striving on the part of each student to be fully prepared for the future which lies ahead. 18 Happiness is competition. Competition is the basis of all team sports. A team cannot perform at its best without each member realizing that he is a part of a unit and that he has a responsibility to the others to do his utmost. Unity is also the feeling of dependence of one member upon another. Each person knows that without the aid of his teammates he could accomplish very little. Competition gives the team the spirit to excel. Happiness is success, the success of each student as he walks from these sacred halls for the last time prepared to bravely face a bold new world and the challenges of attaining his goals. It is the success of anticipating a rewarding and fulfilling life which lies ahead. 19 HdpflutM 3i Ju-Hc-t Row 1: G. Henry. K. Funk. D. Glass. J. Snider. B. Arthur, J. Rupert. E. Hambrick, P. Under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Kibler, physical education instructor, the girls participated in basketball, bowling and softball. This activity was enjoyed by all and it is hoped that this program can be expanded to include different activities and a wider participation by all girls. We're number one! A. Scites, C. Manring, S. A student must maintain a “B” average to be eligible for membership. The students are selected by secret balloting by the faculty. Membership is based on character, scholarship, and service. The 1970-71 Wellston High School Honor Society edited the Hi-Times and inducted new members on May 13. The guest speaker was Ralph McCormick, the new superintendent. Under the excellent direction of Miss Sandra Nodruff the Senior Choir again assisted the Student Council by providing musical selections for the Thanksgiving assembly. The Senior Choir’s and Girls Glee Club’s contribution to the Christmas Season was an annual program presented free to the student body and the community. A group of choir members caroled for the Mothers’ Club, rest homes, and the community. Several choir members took part and helped in the production of the school play in early spring. But the highlight of the school year for the Senior Choir was the annual Spring Sing. The Spring Sing displays the many facets and varieties of the Senior Choir and also the individual talents of choir members. Senior Choir purchased reversible gold and white stoles to dress up the age old graduation robes in use and earned approximately S300 to begin a new robe fund. During the Fair the choir again joined with the X-Ray Staff to earn funds for their school projects. Another great job Miss Nodruff! MllhtOK tkowl 7 tpMlMWt Sdi Rev. Each summer the band’s fall half time performances take shape during practices both at home and at band camp. This year, for the first time. Crescendo Camp was held at Rio Grande College in Rio Grande, Ohio. Even after the close of the football season the band’s activities and work does not cease. They keep in shape by marching in the Halloween, Christmas, baseball, and Memorial Day parades. Also during basketball season many of the band’s members participate in pep band, and provide entertainment for all home games. This year the band also had the privilege of playing for the dedication of the new Wellston Fire Station. When the Rockets are not marching, they perform in Concert Band. The Appreciation and “Pop” Concerts are given each spring under the direction of Dane Heitzman. By his hard work and tireless dedication he has truly made the Wellston Band the best in Southeastern Ohio. 35 Head Wlajoiette %m f t liJlu Wellitofi %ijowttet 36 Row 1: Nancy Tillis, Head Majorette. Simon Willard was featured as a soloist in “Trumpet Song,” and the entire trombone section was featured in “Slidin’ Saints.” Director Dane Heitzman led the band through another great success. The exhibitions on display in the auditorium were furnished by the following departments: Fine Arts I—Max Hcndershott, Home Economics—Alice Lillich, and Doris Smith, Industrial Arts—Tom Baker and John Conger. The 43rd Annual Band Concert for all three bands was held on Tuesday, May 18. The junior, intermediate, and senior bands played various songs, and all three bands presented Mr. Heitzman with gifts. The highlight of the evening was “Scenes From ‘The Louvre’,” as performed by the Senior band. This number was very well executed, and the audience enjoyed it immensely. It gives us Teen Town, so that we may meet and talk with our friends. The Rotary also honors those students with high academic achievements. Through the school year, Rotary asks one girl and one boy each month to attend their weekly meetings. These Seniors of the Month are chosen by the faculty, except the first month, when the honor goes to the boy and girl with the highest averages in the Senior class. Rotary also sponsors a Scholarship Banquet for students who maintain a 93 average for the year. It is a great honor to be able to attend this banquet, which was on May 19 this year. These Seniors of the Month are picked by the head of each department of the faculty and three teachers chosen by the seniors. The only exception is September, when the honor goes to the girl and boy with the highest averages in the Senior class.
