MR. DYE RETIRES AFTER 49 YEARS Retirement years may be a time of reflection of past experience or it may be the beginning of a new life. The hope of Philip Dye is that for him. good fortune will continue and enable him to emphasize both. Mr. Dye's birthplace was at Phillipi, West Virginia, in 1900. A few of his early years were spent with his missionary parents in Burma. His high school training finally ended at Ml. Vernon. Ohio. High School in 1916. He entered Denison in 1917 and was graduated in 1921. Mr. Dye started teaching in Utica, Ohio, and later in Jefferson. Ohio, for a total of six years. In 1927, Mr. Dye came to Wellston and taught Physics, Chemistry, General Science and coached the debating team. Mr. Dye was a faculty member of Wellston High School for the last 43 years making a total of 49 years of educational work. In 1941, Mr. Dye became one of the charter members of the Ohio Junior Academy of Science. Then for 4 years he served as president of this organization. As a result of his work in the Junior Academy, Mr. Dye was honored by his selection as a Fellow in the Ohio Academy of Science and as an Outstanding Teacher in the State of Ohio. For these achievements, he was included in the Who's Who column of the ACADEMY OF SCIENCE NEWS. Since science has moved so fast, this Wellston teacher has continued to attend college to keep up with the times and to better his teaching. After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree at Denison, he attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Master's Degree in Chemistry. Later he was selected for Summer Institute work in Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Geology at Ohio University and Immaculate Heart, Hollywood, California. More educational work was taken at Columbia University and the University of California. In Wellston, in addition to his teaching, he has been active in the Masonic Lodge in which he served in various offices. Perhaps the best tribute was paid by Mr. John Sylvester in an article in a 1957 WELLSTON TELEGRAM entitled “Philip Dye.” “What makes a good teacher? Many qualities, of course, but none more essential than that he keeps studying to the end of his dedicated life. This week a veteran teacher of Wellston High School was graduated from a special course of advanced study at Ohio University. And again, a teacher who can inspire as much interest and satisfaction as he does in his students will take a great pride and satisfaction in them if perchance one becomes a famous scientist in these unfolding times.
