X-RAY 1970 WELLSTON HIGH SCHOOL WELLSTON, OHIO SAM JENKINS LINDA MULHERN PEGGY MURDOCH MARY PAT ESSMAN EDITOR CO-EDITOR FEATURE EDITOR COPY EDITOR FOREWORD “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak. Now is the time for us, the Senior Class of 1970. to record our experiences— our joys and sorrows, hopes and dreams— through the years at Wellston High School. This volume presents the treasured memories of our school days which will remain with us always. “The Moving Finger writes, and, having writ. DYE RETIRES AFTER 49 YEARS Retirement years may be a time of reflection of past experience or it may be the beginning of a new life. The hope of Philip Dye is that for him. good fortune will continue and enable him to emphasize both. Mr. Dye's birthplace was at Phillipi, West Virginia, in 1900. A few of his early years were spent with his missionary parents in Burma. His high school training finally ended at Ml. Vernon. Ohio. High School in 1916. He entered Denison in 1917 and was graduated in 1921. Mr. Dye started teaching in Utica, Ohio, and later in Jefferson. Ohio, for a total of six years. In 1927, Mr. Dye came to Wellston and taught Physics, Chemistry, General Science and coached the debating team. Mr. Dye was a faculty member of Wellston High School for the last 43 years making a total of 49 years of educational work. In 1941, Mr. Dye became one of the charter members of the Ohio Junior Academy of Science. Then for 4 years he served as president of this organization. As a result of his work in the Junior Academy, Mr. Dye was honored by his selection as a Fellow in the Ohio Academy of Science and as an Outstanding Teacher in the State of Ohio. For these achievements, he was included in the Who's Who column of the ACADEMY OF SCIENCE NEWS. Since science has moved so fast, this Wellston teacher has continued to attend college to keep up with the times and to better his teaching. After obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree at Denison, he attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Master's Degree in Chemistry. Later he was selected for Summer Institute work in Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Geology at Ohio University and Immaculate Heart, Hollywood, California. More educational work was taken at Columbia University and the University of California. In Wellston, in addition to his teaching, he has been active in the Masonic Lodge in which he served in various offices. Perhaps the best tribute was paid by Mr. John Sylvester in an article in a 1957 WELLSTON TELEGRAM entitled “Philip Dye.” “What makes a good teacher? Many qualities, of course, but none more essential than that he keeps studying to the end of his dedicated life. This week a veteran teacher of Wellston High School was graduated from a special course of advanced study at Ohio University. And again, a teacher who can inspire as much interest and satisfaction as he does in his students will take a great pride and satisfaction in them if perchance one becomes a famous scientist in these unfolding times. OF TEACHING SIMON MYERS, JR. IN MEMORIAM Simon Myers, Jr., a former teacher at Wellston High School, died in March of this year. Mr. Myers died after a long period of illness. Although many of us were not fortunate enough to have him as an instructor, we liked and respected him. He will be greatly missed by the 10 faculty and student body of Wellston High School. Each school has those persons who work very hard without any special recognition. This page is dedicated to such people at Wellston High School. The teachers' aides prove to be a great help in taking part of the work load from the teachers. The cafeteria staff provides delicious noon meals each day for both the junior and senior high school students. The custodians are indispensable to the up-kcep of the building. Without these people, W.H.S. could not function each day. We would like to express our appreciation and say “thank-you”. Its main service to us is offering Teen Town as a place to go at night. It is difficult to explain what Teen Town is. It is a home-away-from-home. a place to hang out, the “in” spot. It is a place to go, meet new friends, and have fun. Rotary also pays special honors to those students with high academic achievements. Through the school year. Rotary asks one boy and one girl each month to come to their weekly meetings. The Seniors of the Month are picked by the faculty, except for September, when the honor goes to the boy and girl with the highest averages in the Senior class. Besides Seniors of the Month. Rotary sponsors a Scholarship Banquet for those Wellston High School students maintaining a 93 average for the year. It was held on May 13 with Dr. Alberti from Rio Grande College as the guest speaker. It is a great honor to be able to attend these banquets. Rotary also helps the American Legion in sponsoring our students going to Buckeye Girls’ and Boys' States. Rotary does much for the W.H.S. student body and we feel that they deserve our appreciation. SCHOLARSHIP TEAM 61 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION National Honor Society is a nationwide organization. It is a high honor to be elected to this Society. To be eligible for membership, one must maintain a “B average. The students are selected by secret balloting by the faculty. Membership is not based only on scholarship. All the qualities that make a well-rounded student are taken into consideration. National Honor Society stands for character, scholarship, and service. The 1969-70 Wellston High School Honor Society started two new projects, freshman orientation and the paperback book fair. They also had the job of editing the HI-T1MES. The big event, of course, was the induction of new members on March 17. The ceremony was an all-school assembly with a candlelight service. Dr. Dw ight Pugh, former guidance counselor at W.H.S., now professor at Ohio University, was the speaker. He spoke of the involvement on the world today, “Do Your Own Thing . Treasurer; Mike McCarley, Vice President; Tom Triplett, President; Sherry Stewart. Secretary. Student government is becoming a more important aspect of school life. Students are having more voice in the rules which control their lives. In the spring of ’69, students petitioned to run for Student Council positions for the ’69-’70 school year. After a rousing campaign, Mike McCarley was selected as the president. Their main project was revising the Student Council Constitution. Student council also revived the idea of a Sadie Hawkins Dance. It was held on March 20. Another phase of VV.H.S. government is the class officers. Each class elects a president. vice-president and secretary-treasurer. These people represent and lead their class. The main work falls to the Junior and Senior Class presidents. The junior class sponsors the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom while the Seniors give an after-party for the dance. Teen Town Council also is elected each year. This Council helps to govern Teen Town, a place for all teens to go. The council decides rules and privileges for their members. As W.H.S. becomes a larger school, more students will participate in determining the democracy of our own Wellston High School. 70 JUNIOR OFFICERS Roger Saltsman, Treasurer: Debbie Conley, Secretary; Bonnie Arthur, Vice President; Jack Huffman, President. The exhibits on display in the auditorium were furnished by the following departments: Fine Arts I, Max Hcndershott; Industrial Arts. Tom Baker and John Conger; and Home Economics. Alice Lillich and Betty Riggs. The concert season ended this year on May 12, the last performance of the 69-70 band. Each band, junior, intermediate and senior, performed. Each band also gave Mr. Heitzman a gift as a token of their appreciation for his hard work. The highlight of the Senior Band Concert was the work “Second Symphony”. Much hard work was put into this piece and the audience appreciated it greatly. The concert ended in the traditional manner of playing Swinging on Parade”. The Spring Sing is a tasteful combination of church, spiritual, modern and show music. The music this year was selections from “Oliver”. At the intermission, the Mighty Triplett Art Players performed skits for the audiences’ entertainment. After giving Miss Nodruff a gift of appreciation the program was closed by singing the Alma Mater. “As Long As He Needs Me sung by Mary Patterson. “If Ever 1 Would Leave You” Girls Glee Club COMPETITION VARSITY FOOTBALL Row 1: L. MARCHING ROCKETS The 1969-70 edition of the Well-ston High School Marching Rockets was composed of 117 members. The band takes form in the summer of each year. Although practice begins at home, most of the hard work is executed at Camp Crescendo, Kentucky. There the basics and the routines used in the half time performances are learned. Three different shows are learned for the football season. Even after the close of the gridiron season, the marching band still exists. The Halloween, Christmas, baseball and Memorial Day parades keep the marchers in fine form to begin the next marching season. This year the band also had the privilege of playing for the dedication of the new monument on Monument Square. When the Marching Rockets are not performing, it is time for Rockets in Concert. Two concerts are given each year, an appreciation concert and a pop” concert. MAJORETTES Row 1: Debbie Burris, Sherry Stewart. Row 2: Debbie Conley, Marlene McCormick, Becky Merrill.
