HI-TIMES EDITORS Jane Collins, and Arlene VanAernum This is a book of memories. Its purpose is to preserve, by story and pictures, the year 1954-55 as we lived it in Wellston Hig School, Wellston, Ohio. Memories—ah, what memories! Good or bad, yes, we have them all. We shall always remember those happy times we had together out in front of the school talking over the latest events. At the sound of the bell —what a race! We made a mad dash to the door, and hurried to our respective home rooms for fear of receiving a dreaded half-hour detention for our tardiness. There was always excitement in the air when the Hi-Times,” our school paper, was sold. How quickly we scanned the last page to see who were the unfortunate ones to rate the '‘Chatterbox.'' CAVETT AND JONES - Jackson, Ohio An Exclusive Store for Men. September, October, November-exciting months of football for W.H. S. The band, one of the main cheering sections, always presented an outstanding show during the half-time. This, along with the pep assemblies, helped our team to complete a fine season with 8 wins and 1 loss. December we opened our basketball season in the new auditorium, one of the most modern in the state. GEM BOTTLING CO. CARRIE BREWER - Welleston, Ohio Private Instructions in Piano, Organ and Violin SENIORS These are the Seniors of 1955. Next year, to most Wellston High School Students they will be only memories. However, the firm bonds of friendship and goodwill that they have established will be long lasting. Of their school days, they will always remember their Freshman picnic, the Latin Club spaghetti dinner, the Moonlight Garden” of their Jr.-Sr. Prom, and the fund raising for the On to Washington campaign. They are especially proud of the Student Council, which was established in ‘‘55”, with one of their class officers as president. The Seniors have taken their share of honors and awards and have tried to do things of which they and their school can be proud. And so “to each his own ' ........Memories. The members must wait to'be seniors, and must plan what they will do when they reach that goal. The Juniors of this year were a very active group. They had 13 boys on the football team, 5 of whom lettered. There were 6 Juniors on the Reserve team, and 5, which included the 2 managers, on the Varsity. The biggest job, socially, was the Junior-Senior Prom. The Juniors worked in a concession stand every home game in order to make enough money to have one of the best Proms ever given in Wellston High. The Juniors have already started planning for the trip to Washington next year. They have collected class dues each month and other money-raising projects are in the making. DUKE.BLACET, Pamesville, Ohio Representing The Educational Supply Company SOPHOMORES The Sophomores have finally become acquainted with life at W.H.S. In their lighter moments, some of the feminine members think that a club is fine, with the emphasis on parties and parades. Of course, the members of the class have their more studious moments, too. For instance when they stay home to study Solid Geometry, Latin or some other more difficult subjects that take up a portion of their free time. Seriously, the Sophomores have begun to take an active part in music, art, football, basketball, ACappella, Hi-Y, F.H.A. and other activities. All in all, the Sophomores are the most carefree persons in high school, and they will never forget the fun they have had during this year. They had the largest class in Well-ston High, and they are hoping to graduate with a large class. They elected their class officers and two representatives for Student Council. The Freshmen took an interest in many activities around school. They had 19 boys out for football, 9 for basketball, 9 for ACappella, and 15 members in the Band. Although the nmber of Freshmen in activities was limited, they proved themselves a valuable part of life in Wellston High. Although the Golden Rockets are not always victorious, they are respected by all opponents, and are still the champs to the students of Wellston High. For students who not participate in sports there are various clubs. Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y, and F.H.A. are nationally known organizations. The band is known in this region for its marchig precision. The high light of the year for them was to take part in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. For those who sing, there is A Cappella, the Boys' and Girls' Ensemble, and the Glee Clubs. A Student Council, organized this year, is proving valuable in service to the school. The Senior Class Play is open to all Seniors who wish to try out. M A J O R E T T E S Front Left to Right: B. Comp, J. Arthur. Standing: M. Fa.r, S. Scott, V. Xisor, M. Gillis, A. Leoch, K. Camp, R. The motto of F.H.A. is Toward New Horizons. Early in the school year, the F.H. A. chapter in Wellston was hostess to the District F.H.A. meeting. F.H.A. Week was observed by sponsoring a coffee hour for the faculty, and a Courtesy Week for all the students. Both Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y Clubs are religious organizations, whose purpose is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community, high standards of Christian character. Some of the activities carried out this year by the Tri-Hi-Y were (1) sponsored religious assemblies, especially the one for Easter; (2) helped with the polio drive; (3) sent delegates to the Prelegislative Training Session at Athens, and Mock Legislature at Columbus. With the Hi-Y, the Tri-Hi-Y sponsored Religious Emphasis Week, and the District meeting, which was held on April 18. Compliments of DENTAL PROFESSION, Wellston, Ohio Row 1: K. Ziegler, D. Walton, B. PIE CONTEST Mary Kriebel won second place and Arlene Mc-Manaway first place in the Jackson County Apple Pie Baking Contest CLASS PLAY Remember the cast who presented the three-act hillbilly comedy, Mountain Gal, with Miss Ruth Reed as their director? It was a play full of humor and excitement about a “rich family of the Ozark Mountains. The proceeds from the play went to the Senior On to Washington Fund. THE CAST Jane Collins Danny Walton Betty Arnold Iris Smith Dale Christner Mike Leach John Applegate Paul Chatfield Phyllis Gill STAGE MANAGERS Bill Ward Eddie Skeen MAKE-UP Barbara Norton Christine Holberg Josephine Horton ASS T DIRECTOR Alice Staton DUKE BLACET - Cleveland, Ohio Representing the Educational Supply Co. ADMINISTRATION Most students are not well acquainted with the various members of the Board of Education. The Seniors, however will always remember the thrill they felt when Dr. H. W. Gillen, president of the Board, said, On behalf of the Board of Education, it gives me great pleasure to award these diplomas. Mr. Jones, the Superintendent, and Mr. Swick, the Principal, carry out the policies formulated by the Board, in addition to setting up the daily program of the high school. The teachers are the link between the Administration and the students. Most students will al-way remember how pleased and proud they were whenever their teachers praised them for their work, or how they feared detention and punishment, when they were called to the office. Kirby SEVENTH AND EIGHTH The seventh and eighth grades can claim the honor of being the first to attend school, for a full year, in the new addition of the high school building. During this year they have organized a basketball team, and chosen ten cheerleaders. They have formed an A Cappella choir, and a boys' ensemble; several were members of the Junior and Senior bands. Each of the classes was organized and had a full slate of officers. They were elected under the nation election rules of November 2, 1954.
