It had quite a few clothing stores and supermarkets. I went into one of the stores to look at some dresses. A small blond girl waited on me. Of course it was Bernice Meester---Heinrich now. She said that her hus- band, Leland, was a mechanic. She also said that Jean Button was married and living on a farm but was doing some substitute teaching. She also reported that Lu Vern Freese was also married and living on a dairy farm. His 75 cows keep him busy night and morning After doing a little figuring, I realized that I had been fortunate enough to either visit or to hear from every one of my high school classmates during my trip lt was interesting to note that each was successful in his own small or great way I could not help wishing that this success would continue throughout the rest of their lives LASS Ill TORY In the fall of 1900 ten scared little youngsters walked shyly into the first and second grade classroom to begin their kindergarten year They were Wallace Deters, Vernon Eckhoff, Nola Flessner, Roger Geerdes, Frank Hippen, Joyce Huisman, Sheryl Lutterman, Doris Nederhoff, Delores Tack, and Kaywelchers Our teacher was Miss Nickollne Hanson The next fall we were in the same room, but we were met by a new teacher, Miss Marjorie Hofmeister We had two new students in our class that year, Viola Van Loh and David Malin A new teacher but the same room was the scene when we were second graders Our teacher was Miss Voy, who later became Mrs Newby Frank Hippen d1dn't appear with us because he decided he liked first grade so well that he would stay another year Larry Paternl and Arden Terfehn thought they would give town school a try and during the second semester Vernon Jurgens joined us This made our number 14 The next year, as third graders, we had the pleasure of walking across the hall to a different room and anotner new teacher, Miss Bausman We gained Larry Koch, but Larry Paterni decided he liked country school better so he left us As fourth graders we stayed in the same room and kept the same teacher Vernon Janssen became a member of our class Because we were able to move upstairs the next year, we really thought we were big A new teacher was waiting for us at the top of the steps She was Mrs Eggleston, who insisted we call her 'Miss Pat N We decreased in number by one as Larry Koch left us We stayed in the same room for our sixth grade year but we again had a new teacher, Mr than sixth, was quite a a permanent Sm1th, We lost Roger Geerdes, who seemed to l1ke fifth grade better but we gained in return Leland Heinrich and Roger Hippen variety of teachers Mrs Seibsen, our first teacher, taught until one could be found That was Mrs Coulter, but she only stayed a few weeks After she left there were quite a few substitute teachers, almost all of whom were high school students Another new permanent CTI teacher, Mr White, came but he d1dn't finish the year with us either After one or two more sub stitutes Mrs Beving was our teacher for the remainder of the year Our last year in grade school was very pleasant with Miss Bird as our teacher We were sorry to lose David Malin but Dennis Neihaus joined us during the year There were fifteen who graduated together in the spring They were Wallace Deters, Vernon Eckhoff, Nola Flessner, Leland Heinrich, Roger Hippen, Joyce Huisman, Vernon Janssen, Vernon Jurgens, Sheryl Lutterman, Doris Nederhoff, Dennis Nelhaus, Delores Tack, Arden Terfehn, Viola Van Loh, and Kay Welchers The next fall, as freshmen, we were scared to move or say anything, but we were proud of having the largest class in high school with 31 members The 16 new members were Wayre Aukes, Jean Button, Mary Ann Blythe, LuVerne Freese, Angeline Harms, Eldon Harms, Ruth Haupt, Kayleen Koch, Bernice Meester, Luverne Meester Vlncel Melnts, Frank Meyeraan, JoAnn Ohll g, Larry Paternl, Harlyn Riekena, and Wendell Venenga Our teachers were Mr Rankin, the Superintendent, who taught us Algebra, Mr Freitag, Principal, who taught the boys shop, Mrs Bergendahl, who taught General Science and tried to teach the girls how to cook S o ' a.
