Text from Pages 1 - 48 of the 1966 volume:

1874-1966 Foreword As the leaves of autumn turned to fire, a class of freshmen entered this high school, destined to graduate in 1966. Today, as this class prepares to leave, we hope we have gained a better understanding of life that will enable us to weather happily and successfully another autumn, the beginning of our future. The knowledge gained, the friendships strengthened, the moments of joy and disappointment in the past four years are essential to us. We hope to preserve these past four years in this yearbook. Although it sym- bolizes an end, we must regard this point as the beginning of the opportunities of the future. “Drive my dead thoughts over the universe Like withered leaves to quicken a new birth!” Percy Bysshe Shelley Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1966, in sincere appreciation for her innumerable hours of help in studies, dramatics, and inter-curricular activities, dedicate THE CHATTERBOX to Mrs. Spear. The Spears’ home, which has been the scene of our successful parties and our not so successful play practices. Play preparations The Host and Hostess Principal’s Message Now having climbed one of the many and more important rungs on your ladder of life, you should real- ize that you are wiser today than you were that day four years ago when your high school career began. Learn- ing is a continuous process that commences at birth and ends at death. No diploma or degree signifies the termination of the learning process. Abraham Lin- coln said, I don't think much of a man who isn’t wiser today than he was yesterday.” Wells Riyer High School has endeavored to provide you with experiences that would teach you to cope with the situations that will present themselves in your future. Now we hope you will be prepared to meet each aspect of life successfully, to learn, and to be wiser for having experienced it. Congratulations to each one of you in the Class of 1966, and may you have health and happiness the rest of your lives. ADMINISTRATION Superintendent Ernest Lyon School Board Members: Mrs. Dorothy Stevens, Dr. Harry Rowe We extend our sincere thanks to the School Board and Superintendent Lyon for their help and guidance throughout our four years at Wells River High School. VALEDICTORIAN PHILOSOPHY OF LIVING Why? is a question that must be asked before one can hope to succeed or have a future. This question is the basis for all our knowledge. The question probably was first asked when cavemen were colder at night than in the daytime or when food could be produced only at certain times of the year. When time reached the Classical Age and its great thinkers, questions were be- coming more selfish. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and other philosophers were asking why man was put on earth, why man wanted to attain fame and wealth, why man was afraid of dying. This self-questioning has continued to the present. We are asking ourselves much the same questions: why do we want an education? and why do we want money and fame? Many people try to give us satisfactory answers but we must attempt to find for ourselves the answers to why this and why that before we can reach our goals. THOMAS WALLACE DOUSE T.D. The annual Christmas party was sponsored by the French Club at the home of their advisor, Mrs. Spear. Latin Club Roman scholars... and Danielius... at the slave market jmI Latin is not a dead language and the Latin Club proves this with its enjoy- ment of this classical culture. Roman attire, customs, language, and amuse- ments were presented at the Roman banquet at the Spears' home. Dramatics Instead of the annual senior play, the students of W.R. H.S. undertook the full-length production One Family Sings, the story of the world-famous Trapp Family Singers who settled in Vermont twenty years ago. The play begins with the arrival of Maria Augusta (Susan Rowe), the gov- erness, who unites the von Trapp family and marries the Baron (John Vigent). The family's devotion to freedom forces them to leave their Austrian home and come to America. They tour this country, giving concerts, until the Baron and Baroness decide they should find a permanent home. Their love of Vermont's foliage and mountains leads them to Stowe where they begin their new life. The von Trapp children were played by grade-schoolers in Act I and by high school students after a five-year lapse in the story. The hard work of Mrs. Spear, our director, and Mrs. Rowe, our musical director, and the contributions of many others were the factors behind the play’s success. STANDING; T. Douse, W. Glee Club As a pleasant supplement to our academic subjects, Mrs. Rowe, our direc- tor, offered us invaluable appreciation of music and prepared us for the annual Hilldale Music Festival, the Christmas concern, and graduation. Linda Johnson, John Vigent, and John and Susan Rowe were chosen to attend the All-State Mu- sic Festival. Special Music Group Each year a group is selected to audition for the New England Music Festi- val. Wells River High School was represented at this festival in Falmouth, Mass- achusetts, by Anne Powers, Gary Murphy, Joe Hobbs, and John Vigent in the chorus, Susan Rowe in the band, and John Rowe in the orchestra.
