THE CRIMSON AND GRAY MARY E. WELLS HIGH SCHOOL Southbridge, Massachusetts June, 1952 Robert H. McCarn Superintendent of Schools Southbridge, Massachusetts TOWARD A BETTER LIFE Do you know thatyour bodies are made of some of the same substances that are found in the sun and the other stars ? You are a sample of the great Universe so do not let little things trouble you, but think and act as if you were a part of a bigger world than the little earth upon which you live. I am certain that you of the Class of 1952 have learned during the past four years that you are indeed a part of this great Universe. Your teachers have tried to impress upon you that the individual is of enormous worth in this unsettled world of ours. They have endeavored to teach you the precept of Francis Bacon that the real use of all knowledge is the dedication of that reason which was given us by God for the use and advantage of man. In other words they have emphasized the great truths of life and pointed out the futility of concerning yourselves with petty and trivial ob- jects. The ideal of using your talents for the benefit of man has been stressed under such headings as English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Art. Behind each lesson taught has been the conscious aim of inspiring you to help in the creation of a better life. If you of 1952 will remember these great truths, all my wishes for you must perforce be realized. ( y Principal The Crimson and Gray Yearbook Editorial Staff We hope you will approve of the changes made by the senior editorial staff this year: the large senior pictures, the iris motif carried through- out the book, the divider pages, the numerous pictures, and the end pages. ■ ewe £ te . This counterbalanced an unsensational record of four wins, two losses, one tie, one cancellation. The team opened with an easy victory against Uxbridge 26-13. The boys had to sweat out a close one with Auburn 24-20. They played to a scoreless tie with Putnam, Conn. Next the powerful class A West Springfield, three squads strong (with whom Wells played last year to a rugged tie) proved too much for the injury-riddled Wells squad by establishing a 26-12 victory. The undefeated Killingly rivals, the Nutmeggers, expected an easy time with the Crimson and Grays but it proved dif- ferent at game time. With thirty seconds to play and a 13-13 deadlock, Wells chose to play for a win. A pass on their fourth down was dropped; two plays later Killingly scored a T. D. - For almost a month, because of the cancelled Northbridge and the forfeited Assumption games, the Wellsmen had been iron when they clashed with Bartlett. They had work- at practice and were up for trie traditional game. the game the boys carried the coach on their shoulders; they keep the sweet remembrance that they socked Bartlett with 32 points, the most any Wells team has pushed over a Bartlett goal line. In summing up, four players were responsible for the ac- tual scoring: Varin, 10 T D ' s and 2 points; Red Montigny, 2 T D ' s and 3 points; Cleri, 3 T D ' s; and Joe Marino 2 T D ' s. The hometown heroes scored 107 points as against their op- ponents ' 83 points. At the football dinner given by the Rotary Club acknow- ledgement was made of our second leg on the Rotary Football trophy when it was presented to Captain Red Montigny. Red received a trophy as the outstanding back; Bruce Fletcher, a trophy as the outstanding lineman.
