JUNE 1943 Both the boys and gurls entered enthusl astncally unto every sport Of course we weren t a but surprised to fund so many of our friends among the lettermen Thus prov ed to be only a beglnnung for our football heroes Hank Weaver and George Young The Jumor Dramatic Club was fortunate to have :ts officers all members of the Class of 43 Wlth Francls Kirby as our able presu dent we had a most successful year On October l8 we attended Lnfe With Father ln Boston and then In December we assisted nn the production of Bards Christmas Car ol the annual play Belnevung that varuety ns the splce of lufe Mr Earls instructed a group of us to wrnte an autoblography for English Dnggung deep unto our treasure chest of memories we came forth wuth a few chorce buts of unfor matron lf lnttle else resulted from thls Interary endeavor than a few good marks we dld become better acquainted wlth our classmates As the end of June drew nlgh we realized that we were about to be juniors-ah what a thrllllng thought With thus In mind we sand So long to Wells but only for a few brnef months JUNIOR YEAR School days school days dear old gold en rule days We didn t feel exactly that way when we crept luke snails unwullungly to school that early September morning for vacatnon had been good to us all lGas wasn t ratloned then l However It didn t take us long to get into the swung of things and to take our honored place among the upperclossmen One of our greatest achievements of that fall we had o great many to our credit but ut might sound boasttul If I told all was the choosing of the most beautuful rnngs Wells l-llgh School has ever seen Saud rings were soon seen adornlng the necks of many of the faurer sex February saw two of our teachers leave for the army Mr Paraghamlan and Mr Kyruos had long been favorltes with us and thezr departure made us feel we were def: nltely un the war We all wlsh them contln ued success In the meantime we were In the throes of helplng the war effort Junlors were at Cheerleaders IQ!-L2 43 , Zl - 1 , . . . gg gms CRIMSON AND GRAY HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF '43 FRESHMAN YEAR A dsstsngusshed looksng group of educa tson seekers entered the open portals of our beloved Alma Mater Mary E Wells Hsgh School sn September l939 To some of the class the corrsdors and rooms were famslsar for some had spent the year before strugglsng through the esghth grade sn thss some busldsng but to the others the school was a busldsng full of upper classmen hur rysng around to dsscuss thesr vacatson pleas ures We Freshmen made frsends wsth our bewsldered classmates and soon we became full fledged students havsng beaten th trsals and trsbulatsons of our begsnnsng Of course we all remember how Rock strol led back to town after sourneysng to ensoy the beautsful colors of the countryssde Among our members we found a good many athletes who excelled sn thesr own fseld Some of them came to wsn letters as freshmen Among these athletes were Hank Weaver Charlse Bastsen Nellse Carpentser Gusdo Barbsers George Young Janusz and Susse Tobsa Some of us re member the sntra room basketball tourno ment Room ll-4 no matter how hard st trsed couldnt beat Mr Earls room ll6 whsch had some of our best athletes on st sncludsng the Young boys Then at the end of the Year we had the Freshmen Sopho more track meet whsch the sophomores won by a slight margsn lll never forget the hesght of that hsgh sump where l won thsrd place There were three contestants' We all ensoyed the sensor play The Poor Nut sn whsch Lester Newlands starred lt was almost as good as our own sensor play lNote class of 40 l Bsllse Matys was the fsrst freshman member of the Traffsc Squad Remember the boys lNellse Chsco and Charlsel wearsng thesr solemn robes of the vested chosrP Assemblses have always been a source of trouble to the class of 43 Freshman year the enrollment of the school was so large that freshmen were not able to attend the regular assemblses many of them too good to msss We wasted very smpatsently untsl we could be upper classmen and go Now wsth the war gosng on thss sensor year there have been few or no assemblses lt wasn t long before June appeared and school closed so we looked forward to our sophomore year SOPHOMORE YEAR Wsth an eventful summer vacatson be hsnd us we returned to the portals of dear old Wells sn the fall of l94O Allowsng no grass to grow under our feet our sllustrsous members soon entered snto almost every school actsvsty ln the electson of offscers whsch was held early sn September we chose Gusdo Bar bsers to lead us through our sophomore The Student Councsl beckoned to four of our members whsle The Crimson and Gray sought the servsces of four more of our classmates Our musscally msnded frsends found places sn many actsvstses Nelson Carpentser became the pressdent of the Glee Club whsch boasted sn sts membershsp many of our sophomores Lsttle dsd Nellse realsze that thss colorful begsnnxng was to be cls maxed sn hss sensor year by hss rendstson of the now famous selectson She Don t Wanta In the classscal orchestra Marlon Gsbb Betty Maxwell and Ernest Trudeau fsddled thear way to fame whsle Edmond Rewsnsks thrslled everyone wsth hss beauts ful psano playsng The Jazz Band could be justly proud of sts one sophomore Edgar Caron 20 I 1 I - I , , . . We mustn t forget the made to order scenery buult around the wheelchaur euther Laurels went to Bull Matys and Hank Weav er for doung so splendudly on such short no tuce Of course we all knew ut would be a Muss Drake our class advuser and Mrs Beauregard The sound of applause had hardly sub suded before we were busy wuth hostess responsubulutues for graduatuon Members were s en beneath roses peonues dausues and the luke racung around un varuous mo toruzed vehucles especually Cudworth s and Mrs Beauregards cars and Plumptons truck' Thus travel was quute o feat sunce we were allowed only three gallons of gas a week Ah those were the good old days You could even get to Howard Johnson s and back there I sugh deeply But to return to graduatuon We had our duffucultues as l suppose every class dud Whule decoratung for Bac calaureate we were unformed that no flowers could be placed near the pulput Mr Gules had hay fever Fruday afternoon found our beautu ful red whute and blue streamers saggung about the necks of Mr Tarduff and Mr Speranduo We all had our doubts about the dependabuluty of the strung holdung them THE CRIMSON AND GRAY and wouldn t have been surprused to see ut pop about ten that evenung Can t you just see the dugnufued guests dusentanglung them selves from a mass of twusted crepe paper? But oh happy thought that segment of twune held fast durung the festuvutues As the Prom drew to a brulluant close we thrulued to the thought that now we were the senuors SENIOR YEAR We entered our fourth and last year grum and determuned We were SENIORS the uppermost classmen of all Oddly enough as uf un a dream no one else seem ed to notuce us any more than usual Fresh men stull rammed head on unto us en route to the coat room sophomores stull paraded around cockuly even managung to convey the fact that they too were umportant Thus new found udea was only uust set tlung un our seethung brauns when we were shocked agaun We were senuors all rught but the uolly uunuors who had taken our places dudn t care' ' ' ' Semblung our dug nuty we determuned not to be annoyed We loosened our lups slughtly un a ghost of a smule put on our wusdom caps and went on Soon however we began to come back to lufe Slowly at furst and then un leaps and bounds we began gettung un the groove Then came the realuzatuon that we were at war We were ready to do or due so we practucally and to all untents and purposes dud Furst came the ratuonung jobs wuth everybody runnung around yellung Next?
