gg gms CRIMSON AND GRAY HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF '43 FRESHMAN YEAR A dsstsngusshed looksng group of educa tson seekers entered the open portals of our beloved Alma Mater Mary E Wells Hsgh School sn September l939 To some of the class the corrsdors and rooms were famslsar for some had spent the year before strugglsng through the esghth grade sn thss some busldsng but to the others the school was a busldsng full of upper classmen hur rysng around to dsscuss thesr vacatson pleas ures We Freshmen made frsends wsth our bewsldered classmates and soon we became full fledged students havsng beaten th trsals and trsbulatsons of our begsnnsng Of course we all remember how Rock strol led back to town after sourneysng to ensoy the beautsful colors of the countryssde Among our members we found a good many athletes who excelled sn thesr own fseld Some of them came to wsn letters as freshmen Among these athletes were Hank Weaver Charlse Bastsen Nellse Carpentser Gusdo Barbsers George Young Janusz and Susse Tobsa Some of us re member the sntra room basketball tourno ment Room ll-4 no matter how hard st trsed couldnt beat Mr Earls room ll6 whsch had some of our best athletes on st sncludsng the Young boys Then at the end of the Year we had the Freshmen Sopho more track meet whsch the sophomores won by a slight margsn lll never forget the hesght of that hsgh sump where l won thsrd place There were three contestants' We all ensoyed the sensor play The Poor Nut sn whsch Lester Newlands starred lt was almost as good as our own sensor play lNote class of 40 l Bsllse Matys was the fsrst freshman member of the Traffsc Squad Remember the boys lNellse Chsco and Charlsel wearsng thesr solemn robes of the vested chosrP Assemblses have always been a source of trouble to the class of 43 Freshman year the enrollment of the school was so large that freshmen were not able to attend the regular assemblses many of them too good to msss We wasted very smpatsently untsl we could be upper classmen and go Now wsth the war gosng on thss sensor year there have been few or no assemblses lt wasn t long before June appeared and school closed so we looked forward to our sophomore year SOPHOMORE YEAR Wsth an eventful summer vacatson be hsnd us we returned to the portals of dear old Wells sn the fall of l94O Allowsng no grass to grow under our feet our sllustrsous members soon entered snto almost every school actsvsty ln the electson of offscers whsch was held early sn September we chose Gusdo Bar bsers to lead us through our sophomore The Student Councsl beckoned to four of our members whsle The Crimson and Gray sought the servsces of four more of our classmates Our musscally msnded frsends found places sn many actsvstses Nelson Carpentser became the pressdent of the Glee Club whsch boasted sn sts membershsp many of our sophomores Lsttle dsd Nellse realsze that thss colorful begsnnxng was to be cls maxed sn hss sensor year by hss rendstson of the now famous selectson She Don t Wanta In the classscal orchestra Marlon Gsbb Betty Maxwell and Ernest Trudeau fsddled thear way to fame whsle Edmond Rewsnsks thrslled everyone wsth hss beauts ful psano playsng The Jazz Band could be justly proud of sts one sophomore Edgar Caron 20 I 1 I - I , , . .
