JUNE l942 In the musuc department sophomores Tommy Walkunshaw and Luonel Gagnon wowed the upperclassmen by theur master ful way of playung uazz at the Vuctory dance after the Grafton game Football the domunatung sport at Wells saw un uts ranks a future star player un sophomore Duck Renaud Duck started rught out to guve hus ardent fans somethung to gloat about by scorung a touchdown un the furst of the football games he appeared un From then on through three years Duck has proved to be Websters scorungest Southbrudge opponent The sophomores grew and grew untul the Dramatuc Club gave uts Box Socual The uppercla smen were greatly umpressed by the daunty boxes of our gurls and the danc ung of our boys We even seemed old ment of the tables The study hall new as a sophomore home room was the one place where news of all sorts was to be had Practucally all sopho mores could be found there before mornung and afternoon classes thus we became well acquaunted wuth Muss Coderre a d Mr McMahon the study hall home room teachers Wuth the fullung out of electuve cards our thought tcrned to June and we became ter rubly anxuous for vacotuon to come probably umpatuent to become uunuors JUNIOR YEAR The uunuor year of the alr ady famous Class of 42 began wuth a thrull of antucupa tuon Muss Frances Troy was to have the dubuous honor of herdung the sully sopho more sheep unto the uunuor pen and prepar ur'g them for the senuor shearung We were naturally much excuted and luterally tuckled punk for Muss Troy was a favorute among us and her leadershup was much ap precuated Then too we were upperclass men now un the much vued for spot of Jolly Junuors those terrufyung tartars take us long to establush our superuoruty over those poor wuse fools' Also we had already begun to duscuss rung desugns and emblems worthy of the best class ever to reugn un Mary E Wells Hugh School Of course ut was well under sto d that a good percentage of saud rungs --Q.. THE CRIMSON AND GRAY HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF Lu2 FRESHMAN YEAR Contrary to the popular cu tom of heck Ing Freshmen the portals of Mary E Wells h ld outstretched arms as a small token of apprecuatuon of the Class of 42 Indeed ut was an honor ta welcome such an outstandung group A few weeks after cur legal acceotaunce of our chosen fate we decuded that old Wells needed a good shak ung up To do thus we acquured the aud of tlne Goddess of Wund whuch uncudentally resulted un the Hurrucane of 38 Thus pres sure dud away wuth a few cob webs and we were just on the threshold of a new era Because of our enthusuasm and ever lastung school spurut even the Senuors bent theur knees and urged us to attend theur Class Play lof course the money receuved from our tuckets was no obuecti and besudes the cheerful atmosphere whuch always sur rounded us we were later told that more entertaunment was deruved from our newly establushed method of dancung than from the play utself lPIease note Class of 39 I Especually notuceable was the hesutatuon of the Freshmen to dance the fast numbers Oh say gurls dud you ever duscover lust whuch sude of the audutoruum furnushed the best opportunuty for dancung or do you stull hopefully dash from one corner to another? For a short unterval the Class of 42 mugrated or should we say Gone Wuth the Wund to be found agaun on the bus to the Westfueld Tournament Ah' Those good old days when the Freshmen were the lufe of the party Weren t the Senuor gurls nuce Jesse and Harold? Was ut due to thus won derful day that encouraged Margaret Kee nan and Barbara Cudworth to such robust sudelune enthusuasm9 One of the outstandung extra currucular events was the Gurl Scouts Lawn Party at Muss Lanphear s house Werent the boys choosey tryung to match theur dunner cards and wuth such a beautuful chouce of gurls? Joe Theodoss coachung the softball game hunted at hus powers un athletucs Ask Gert Bouvuer how she made that home run Not wantung to show up the upper class men we partook un a pruvate dancung class whuch only proves that we were an out standung class Wull we ever forget the mus tletoe at Chrustmas tume9 lt seems that there were three or four Chrustmases that year Thus wonderful dancung class furn ushed an excutung conclusuon to our Fresh man year by our furst semu formal at the Publuck House wuth a grand march led by Annue Young and Bully I-logon Even the Sophomores SOPHOMORE YEAR After a summer vacatuon fulled wuth war news and propaganda we returned to school as lofty munded sophomores How pleasant ut was to strut about the corrudors actung hugh and mughty for the benefut of the crungung freshmen' And so we luved sunfully untul our class offucers were chosen to lead us Sophomore year saw the begunnung of the famous and successful Roy dynasty whuch was to last throughout the next two years That year the Cross Country team under Mr Snell enrolled a new member of whom everybody grew to be mughty proud Thus fast streak of lughtnung was no other than our own sophomore Norman Morong who won furst place un all cross country meets agaunst other schools Also at the Inter Scholastuc Meet un Boston he came un sec ond and brought more glory to humself as well as to hus classmates I8 Y Wg- i 11 ' I A l , S . would decorate the necks of the falrer sex of the hugh school whule thelr dannty ones would Ive In the hlp pockets of thelr current Romeos In splte of the dlther of dlthers for fear the rungs would fall to appear before Chrlstmas many were pleased to fund that Santa Claus rushed through has flrst de Iuvery of the golden curclets as a surprise present much apprecnated To add to the ranks of our brulllant mornlng faces we welcomed Julle Perron Buddy Butler and Professor Savory who ponned company wlth a good class Then too forty one of us punnors had younger brothers and susters nn the fresh man class to serve as nasty llttle chaperones edge from sand superior lunlors After we gave the town a good gomg over at New Year s our dear class returned to the haven of alma mater to prepare for the lunuor p ay Thus I state brlskly blow :ng on my nalls that the Class of l942 put on the best play ever presented wuthun the four walls of our great audutornum All lok Ing aslde the juniors packed the hall sold standnng room and made the buggest profnt In the hustory of Wells Furthermore this drama Mode to Order Hero was so good that not one but two extra command per THE CRIMSON AND GRAY formances were given before the chnldren of other schools No sooner had thus prause been sounded than It was tame for us to get to work and decorate that same assembly hall for Class Day It certainly IS lucky that gasollne ratlonnng wasn t In effect at that time o the four cars that each made about twenty trlps for flowers vases moss and above all mountaln lthe forbuddenl laurel wouldn t have been so successful But never before had we seen the old hall look so festlve and we grudglngly admitted that the mad and hectuc two days spent had brought pleasant results It was worth all the wor ry For weeks afterward the town buzzed nts decoratuons Closely follownng thus was the decoratnon of the Town Hall whuch we mnstakenly but Iaborlously thought could be decorated on the same scale However the patrlotlsm displayed was In :ts very slmpluclty beguulnng and all those present enloyed themselves So passed another year and the erstwhule lolly jumors have become the serlous se nlors just waltung for the favors of the truflung underclassmen SENIOR YEAR In September of l94l we became sensors CAST OF MADE TO ORDER HERO 20 I .
