QMQ www THE FIRST WELLS SCHQCL On September l5, l866, a day after it was dedicated, the newly built Wells Elementary School opened its doors to two hundred eager students. ' , After being partially destroyed by the Chicago Fire in l87l, this structure was replaced by the second Wells Elementary School in l883. The costof this second school building was 547,500 as compared 'iiihe 51,900,000 cost 5?5LFpregCfQ'ig Qf,'f Z Sixty-five years later this second structure WGS Ordered torn down and an additional section of private property pm-chased, in keeping with the plans to build a new school. Following months of delay, the building slowly began to take the form of a magnificent, thoroughly modern, four-story structure that was completed in February, l935. Within a few days after the school was dedicated to the memory of William Harvey Wells, the doors of this splendid edifice were opened to 3,000 students. At the dedication ceremonies, in memory of W. l-l. Wells, this edifice was named Wells High School, thus enabling the cherished memory of William l-l. Wells to live on, and to inspire the forthcoming genera- tion of youth. FRANK PUFONT. 4
