Space to Play The Polish Roman Catholic Union Eckhart Park Library The community of Wells High offers many profitable occa- sions for the students to occupy their leisure time whether that time be educational or recreational. It has become habitual with the students to carry into school life Whatever they do in the community or visa versa. The parks of the Wells High community have excellent libraries with a very wide selection of books for increasing one's knowledge, and facilities for many sports which students, Who are not candi- dates for inter-scholastic teams, are urged to participate in. These public institutions for recreation also have classes for both tap and ballroom dancing, swimming and other en- joyments. Attending neighborhood motion picture theatres is another means of using leisure time, for today the movie industry is bringing to life many historical names. The Polish Roman Catholic Union with its museum offers many enjoyable hours of viewing the achievements, medals, books, money, relics of the World War, paintings, and many other objects relating to Poland and its history. Social Experiences We Go to Camp New World Citizens Norihwestem Settlemeni SETTLEMENT HOUSES lt is the aim ot the neighborhood settlement houses to provide a center tor higher civic and social lite. ln this statement are embodied the principles from which these community centers have developed. ln tultilling this aim they have brought the youth ot the community together and guided them in recreational and educational activities. A ln their spacious halls the youth ot the community gather tor evenings ot tun and dancing. The neigh- borhood houses provide courses in home training and cultural advancement. They maintain summer camps for under privileged children. They guide and sponsor debates on educational topics. They otter classes where the youth are taught the requirements for good citizenship. National Alliance Co-operating with the Wells High, the Young lVIen's Chris- tian Association permits the students to have splash parties in their pool. Here the pupils, who are not active members of a school team, are welcomed to join in the many sports. In addition, the playground facilities are frequently utilized for school contests in the community. The directors of public library branches and other community libraries meet at inter- vals with principals and school librarians to adapt the library to school purposes, to foster Widespread recreational and work types of reading during out-of-school hours. Therefore vocational, as well as recreational, potentialities are inherent in these contacts with community projects. Special effort is directed toward promotion of wholesome projects to occupy pupils during vacational time with the purpose of capitalizing on lines of the individuals special interests and aptitudes.
