NOYES, PRINCIPAL We, the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-two, dedicate this edition of the Abenaki to MR. RUSSELL K. NOYES, PRINCIPAL Mr. Noyes' patience and understanding coupled with his administrative ability have won the lasting admiration and friendship of our class. Under his guidance during the last year and a half, Wells High School has prospered and grown. Our association with him has been a reward ing and enriching experience -3 A QW' ffff ! JOHNSON, SUPERINTENDENT Education is a privilege. Our forefathers made great sacrifices to establish the American Public School System which guarantees a free public education through high school to all deserving American youth. In the early history of our country education was recognized as desirable. Today, a good education is more necessary than ever before. Many industries will not grant a job inter- view unless one has a high school diploma. Many demand a college background for executive positions. Make YOUR high school career worthwhile. Plan your selection of courses to lead on to something, either to higher education or to a better place in to- day's world of work. Above all else, be thankful that you live in America where you can be trained along lines of your own choice. YOUR life is what YOU make it. We, parents and teachers, stand ready to help in any way we can. PRI CIPAIXS MESSAGE MR. RUSSELL K. NOYES, PRINCIPAL Our society today makes more demands upon you young people than ever before. It becomes increasingly difficult for you to live up to your convictions as to how you want to live. Pressures cause you to give in and do things the easy way. If you are not strong in your stand to defend your beliefs, you will find that you soon will become one of the many people who do not defend their ideals because they fear that they will be critized by those who disagree. As a result, you, as with many of the others, will follow the path of least resistance. Such a path never leads to accomplishments which are needed to better the society in which we live. Remember, progress was never made ex- cept at the expense of those people who truly believe in what they were doing and, therefore, took a stand in behalf of their beliefs. As you travel through life, have faith in and love for your fellow human beings. Have compassion, love, tolerance, and understanding for those around you and you will never be without peace of mind. MR. RICHARD I. WAKELY Guidance Counselor Bates, A.B. With the second year of Mr. Wakely's teaching at Wells High comes the fulfillment of a position vital to the school, but never before filled This position is guidance counselor. Mr. Wakely has undertaken the task of advising students in such things as courses, subjects choice of and enrollment in colleges. His advice has been of special aid to the Seniors. As if this job in itself were not enough he also teaches three periods of English a day, and coaches I V basketball Through his deep understanding of the students as individuals and his sparkling wit, Mr. Wakely has won the ad- miration and friendship of all of the students. MR, DONALD I. GOODWIN Assistant Principal University of Massachusetts, B.S. Filling the position of vice principal is a capable member of the faculty, Mr. Goodwin. His assistance has proved invaluable to Mr. Noyes. In addition, he teaches sciences and advises the very active Science Club. This year he guided the workings of the Stu- dent Council campaign and elections and continued to assist the Student Council throughout the year. If ever a student needs aid, whether scientific or other, Mr. Goodwin is always willing to lend a helping hand. MISS ETHEL M. WEYMOUTH A Bates College, A.B.: Cornell, M.S. Miss Weymouth is our devoted instructor of mathematics and chemistry. Her dedication to her work and her ability have been recently recognized na- tionally by the publication, LEADERS IN AMERICAN SCIENCE, which described her work as providing opportunity in the small high school. This truth is further brought out by the testimony of students who, through the guidance and instruction of Miss Weymouth, have been able to progress in higher education. IAS I F XmxJ'1A- .22.,cJ,q,Q,1-fb-fb VXA MISS MARION W. DAVIS State Teachers' College, Framingham, Massachusetts Nasson, A.B. Besides teaching eight classes each day, she sees that all mimeographed sheets and other paper work are com- pleted satisfactorily and on time. In addition, she is official bookkeeper for the school. MRS. PEARL W. WAKELY Bates, A.B. Mrs. Wakely is the competent head of the English department and a well- liked member of Wells High School's faculty. Her lively interesting classes compensate for the lengthy homework assignments which she doles out to her hard-working students. Mrs. Wakely is also advisor to the senior class. w NI' 1,-' In F I .C fr MR. ROBERT A. ARLIN University of New Hampshire, B.S. Being advisor to the freshman class, and teaching P.O.D. , American History, and World History, provides Mr. Arlin with a full schedule. Yet, he still finds time to coach the boys' varsity basketball and baseball teams. In addition to these activities, he is working on his Master's Degree at North- eastern University. MR. FRED S. STROUT Barrington College , B . A . Mr. Strout is a new member of the faculty this year. He teaches general math, algebra, geometry, and P.O.D. , and is advisor to the Abenaki staff. In November he took on the added responsibility of helping with the newly formed school newspaper. His enthusiasm for and interest in the school has won him many friends. MR. CARL E. MERRILL Gorham State Teacher's College, B.S. Mixing knowledge with an atmosphere of understanding and friendship seems to be Mr. Merri1l's unfailing recipe for successful teaching of a shop course. Mr. Merrill not only is the devoted cross country, track, and assist- ant football coach, but has also undertaken the instruction of an arts and crafts course and a mechanical drawing course this year. MISS ELIZABETH M. SNOW St. Ioseph's College, B.A. Miss Snow is another addition to our teaching staff this year. She teaches Latin I, ll, and III, and French I and II. She has also organized the very suc- cessful Modern Dance Club which presented Peter and the Wolf at the Christmas Concert. The community feels that this is an outstanding contri- bution to the school curriculum. MR. GEORGE L. LANGILLE Springfield College , B . P . E. Mr. Langille is our physical education teacher this year, and coaches girls' basketball and softball. He also teaches hygiene and drivers' educa- tion. His easy-going nature makes him an agreeable teacher. MR. VINCENT R. TRENCIA University of Maine, B.A. Another welcome member to the faculty this year is Mr. Trencia. Be- ing football coach, junior class advisor, and instructor of general science, biology, and civics, he still finds time to attend basketball games and other school functions. His good humor and friendly frankness are genuinely ap- preciated by the student body. if .rf E-if W MRS. EDITH TWAMBLY Although Mrs. Twambly is kept busy with her job as Mr. Noves' secretary, she is never too busy to help the students with an odd job. Her cheerful dis- position and warm smile make her a favorite of both the faculty and the stu- dents. MRS. MAXINE MILLER It is conforting for the students of Wells High to know that they are safe under the care and observation of our competent nurse, Mrs. Miller. We all appreciate the medical aid she has given each of us at one time or another. CAFETERIA LADIES Mrs. Marion Stansfield - Mrs. Jennie Sinclair These t-wo ladies play a vital role in Wells High School. They ingeniously plan, prepare, and serve thousands of tempting meals for the ever-hungry stu- dents and teachers of the school. MR. LUC CYR One of the most common and most used phrases around Wells High is, Go get Lucg he'll help you. Mr. Fix-it himself, Luc, is a hard working janitor. Without his help and pleasant personality, Wells High would certainly be at a loss. at X666 , ,L X ' XX X X f, X Qi E K XX e W3 Q i'xQi 1 ! ' ,A -' Y is Y x X x Ed. I A Wi 4J? STANDING: James Bacheldor, John Darling, Robert Brackett Stanley Adams, Payson Harmon, Coach Merrill, Donald Hill, David Porter, Gary Hearrin, Raymond Goodale, Douglas Filson. The 1961 Track season was a disappointing one to the team who lost the State Track Meet by only one point. However, aside from that, the Warrior tracksters, as usual, racked up an impressive record. Outstanding boys on the team were Stan Adams in the javelin and hurdles, Bruce Brown in the broad jump and dashes, Ray Goodale in high jump, Gerald Clarrage in pole vault, and Gary Hearrin in shotput and discus. The future is bright for the trackmen, who have their sights fixed on another state championship this year. The 1961 cross country team was not too successful, winning only one meet. Letter winners this year included Captain Russell Johnson, Jay Smith, Raymond Gregoire, Dana Brindle, Lane Phillips, Everett Decatur, and Manager Peter Joy. These boys participate in a rigorous sport. Surely they deserve the admiration and encouragement of the stu- dent body. f-5 ..
