Irs presence in our year- book is natural, as natural as is our glimpse of blue waters through the windows of Wells High School and the tang of the salt air blowing off the marshlands. To live in Wells or Ogunquit is to live in close proximity to the Sea, a proximity so natural to us that we sometimes are blind to its remarkable qualities. The Sea, like life, has many faces, sometimes calm and unruffled, sometimes angry and dotted with whitecapsg gentle and quiet, rough and noisy, but always beauti- ful, mysterious, and powerful. We have chosen this theme, the Sea, with the hope that in future years a backward glance at this yearbook will bring back memories not only of Wells High School but also of life in Wells. ROY STEVENS The three members of the School Committee, elected by the people, serve for three years at a salary of S100 a year. One new member is elected MR. FORREST CHASE every year. The importance of the job far exceeds the small salary, for the Committee performs many important tasks. To do this, they have a regular meeting once a month, often supplemented by spe- cial meetings. The School Committee establishes policy for the custody, care, and maintenance of the schools. They approve a general course of instruction and establish and legislate the school policies. Jointly with other Committees in School Union 1912, they elect the Superintendent. The Committee also elects the teachers upon nomination by the Superintendent, determines what students shall attend the various schools, excludes students who are unfit or disturb the peace of the school, and approves the transporta- tion arrangements made by the Superintendent. The importance of the Superintending School Committee should not be underestimated. It is a vital organ in our school system and very important in its functioning. SUPERINTENDENT The Superintendent works closely with the School Committee, but he is not a member of it. l-le is its secretary ex officio, thus making a record of all its proceedings and keeping the financial records and accounts. After the Committee passes regulations, it becomes his duty to enforce them. l-lis nomination of the teachers and selection of text- books are both subject to the approval of the Committee. Independent of the Committee, the Superintendent visits the schools, supplies the annual report for the State Commissioner, and every term reports the record of finances to several committees of the supervisory union. He also supervises the work of the teachers. By law the Superintendent must devote his entire time to his job. This in itself indicates the importance of the office and its duties. Even though we were now seniors, everything seemed the same - the school was bright and shining after a summer's rest, the waxed floors sparkled in the autumn sunlight, and the well-known faces greeted us once more.. We calmly moved into Room I with little change in spirit. But as the months flew by, never before had they seemed to go so fast, we all felt some inexpli- cable change which expressed itself in a hundred different ways - an eagerness to graduate, and then again, the desire to remain in school and preserve those happy days, wistful looks inward and questioning looks outwardg strange, imaginative dreams and a wonderful feeling of self-confidence, awe at the world opening before usg days when we were entirely happy and days of somber seriousness and slight sadness. AROU D WELLS HIGH In the one hundred and eighty days of the school year one day is much like another and all the one hundred and sixty-two members of the student body are very much the same, studying, practicing, talking, working, and playing. But during the year there are some students who stand out because of their achievements and because of the fact that they have brought favorable recognition to our high school. We present on these pages a few highlights of 1957-1958. Charles Chadbourne '59 nosed out John Hayes '60 and represented Wells High at the foul shooting con- test held in Portland February 1. Here he made good 44 out of his 50 shots, placing 12th in the South- western Maine area. William Ireland '59 won the ten dollar prize offered by the Abraham Lincoln Woman's Relief Corps to the high school student who wrote the best essay on the subject Why I Am Glad That I Am An American. The judges were Rev. Lewis Chase, Mr. Forrest Chase, and Mr. Albeo LaPierre. The runners- up in the ten essays submitted were Merna Darling and Michael Rozeff. To Janet Lindsay '58 went the honor of being chosen by her classmates and the faculty as the senior girl most deserving of the award given yearly by the York Chapter of the Daughters of the American Rev- olution. This award is given on the basis of depend- ability, patriotism, leadership and service. akin Faith Littlefield '58 has earned recognition as the four year president of her class, its wittiest girl, and a stalwart member of the basketball and softball squads. This year, however, she was tops in another field, for to her went the annual Betty Crocker Homemakers Award. This award is given to the girl in the senior class who scores highest on a test of objective questions and an essay on the general subject of homemaking. It was good news to Wells High School when the announcement came that Michael Rozeff '58 was one of the semi-finalists inthe National Merit Scholar- ship Test. This test was given in October to some 256,000 of the top ranking seniors in the secondary schools of the United States and is the nation's most selective test. Better news came in February when it was announced that further tests had qualified him as a finalist. But the best news of all came in May when he was awarded a scholarship of 51550 a year for four years at Harvard Uni- versity. This scholarship of 36200, one of about a thousand scholarships of varying sizes awarded on the basis of the National Merit Scholarship Test throughout the coimtry, is indeed a feather in Mike's cap and in the cap of Wells High. we wwfwfwfsfe was f-1,1655 ,L i E 3 s it 6' I Q wifes Matt ,, Q, , ...wg ' I ' M H' Li,55'Uf5,Q'w 4- ' . HERE'S THE RECORD The Student Council serves as a liaison between the faculty and the student body. It provides a means by which the students may participate in the school government and does as much as possible to improve the conditions around the school. The first project adopted by the Student Council this year was the revision of the constitution. The main purpose of the revision was to give the students more representation in the government of the school. Other Student Council activities included the introduction of a suggestion box for the student body, participation in the Maine Safety Council Campaign, organizing a dance party on television, and instituting dancing in the audito- rium at lunchtime. In addition to these accomplishments, the organization continued to take charge of the bulletin board and the lost and found department. The Student Council, backed by the student body, passed a resolution sug- gesting that the present 16 point system be a system of 16 academic points: that is, in order to accumulate the necessary points to graduate, a student must eam 16 points through academic subjects, exclusive of music and physi- cal education. If this resolution becomes effective, the first class to be affected will be the Class of 1962. Another project of the Student Council is the editing of the Student Hand- book, designed primarily for the use of incoming freshman classes. It contains a code of behavior suitable for the students at Wells High. Star miler IAMIESON CHAMPIONS AGAIN! The year 1957 marked another State Championship for Wells. This makes our record ten consecutive State Championships. The victory was due to the fine all-round team work shown by the boys-the hurdling of Mert Matthews, the high jumping of Ralph Hill, the pole vaulting of Jim Rams- dell, the javelin throwing of Dave Hutchin- son, and the outstanding running of Phil Jamieson. The loss of six big point men will mean harder work next year. 'RDLER RAMSDELL CROSS COUNTRY TEAM POLE VAULTER RAMSDELL RUNNER HUTCHIN SON WELLS TRACK STARS FIRST ROW: Gary Hearrin, william Spiller, Richard Burden, Robert Brackett, Roland Cole. SECOND ROW: Coach Norman Holder, Captain Glenn Ramsdell, Douglas Cruickshank, Gerald Clarrage, Al fred Strew, Thomas Hutchins. A BRIGHT FUTURE Although plagued by the flu, the harriers were still able to turn in a worthy record. Defeating everyone except powerful Berwick and York was encourag- ing, but not being able to compete in the annual County Meet because of the flu was disappointing. The future for the harriers looks exceptionally promising. No one on the squad graduatesp and with many fine runners remaining, the team looks very strong.
