This placed us second in the conference. We are proud of the conference trophy on display in the trophy case. Our leading hitter was George Patterson with a 461 average. Scott Lockhart, Pete Sollars, Dave Caldwell, and Tim Longfellow all batted above 400. Our team batting average was 353 which was very good. Since we had only ten players on our squad, this was a very good season. Our only seniors were Pete Sollars, Henry Longfel- low, and Wes Evans. Dukes' Defense Third Place In F resh-Soph Tourne The Season By Coach Ross Varsity Basketball The Dukes had a 13-12 record this year. We started the season with 14 boys for both teams. Our boys played a lot of close games this year. We were led by Pete Sollars with a 22.64 per game average. Scott Lockhart had a 16.56 per game average and these two boys were co Nlost Valuable winners this year. Scott also won the free throw- championship with a 702 average. Henry Longfellow was our most improved player of the year. Wes Evans was our only other senior and helped us on the boards. Dave Caldwell and George Patterson were the other two boys we relied upon heavily. Scott and Pete both had their share of injuries this year. With three of the first five returning and help coming from a good junior varsity we expect better things for next year. The Seniors will be missed but we will have a much larger team next year. Good luck next year Dukes. AVG. The Chess Team was organized out of interest generated from the activity period. During the second semester as many as ten students were members of the Chess team. For dual meets seven players were on the competitive team and for state play five players were in competition. Although they did not win any dual meets, they scored one point in state com petition by beating another school 9-1. Our team contained mostly freshmen as Tom Longfellow anchored the team as the No. 1 board player. Barry Voyles AHYOFI Rice Nlost Valuable Player Hi9h95t Batting AVH399 Coach Drake Coach Williamson l Wellington Junior High Baseball Season 1974-75 For the first time in several years the Bullodgs were faced with a rebuilding year. After a couple of disappointing loses at the beginning of the season the young Bulldogs bounced back to finish the season at a .500 record. The team managed to stay in every game until the end with the exception of the Woodland game, The Bulldogs were outclassed by a fine group of boys from Woodland who went on to finish second to Watseka in the County Tournament. The team was led in hitting by Aaron Rice whose lusty .556 batting average kept us in many of our games. MVP Barry Voyles contributed highly with his timely hitting, outstanding defensive play, and general all-around leader- ship. When a season ends it is customary to say if a little luck had fallen our way here or there things might have been different. We lost two close decisions to Milford which automatically denied us two trophys in the Conference and County Tournaments. In spite of the usual misfortunes that come any team's way, the Bulldogs displayed a good brand of baseball for which the school and community should be proud. The Defense played well all season long but the Offense sputtered off and on. Several games were lost by less than 7 points. Barry Voyles was the A team leader in Defense, Scoring, and Free Throws. This was Barry's second season as an A team player. Other players who played well were Donald Sollars, Jim Sollars, Mike Penicook, Todd Totheroh, and Bill Reed. 1 ff' 1 xg x f -f ffm 1 , aa, ' , Junior High , -p. ' ' 3 14.0 r 1, LW. Taking in to account the inexperience of first year coach, Les Stevens, and the many inex- perience fifth graders, a great deal was ace com plished. While the B team llightweightsb failed to win a meet or place well up in the standings at either con- ference or county meets, the team gained valuable experience for the years ahead. Look for 6th grader, Kevin Swartz and 7th grader, Aaron Rice, to really produce in hurdles and field events as well as heavyweights next spring. Another bright spot on the squad was the running of Joe Smith. Only a 5th grader, Joe represented himself and W.G.S. very well as the team's quarter miler. Other team members were John Sollars, Bobby Picket, Mike Brookwalter, Tal Holmes and Richie Fulton. All 5 show great promise if they continue to work hard, The A team's lheavyweightsl scoring revolved mainly around 3 boys: Donald Sollars, Barry Voyles, and Chip Houmes. Sollars was masterful in the high jump, triple jump and 880 yd. run as well as running in the relay. Voyles is an all around athlete who filled in at all events. He was always there and got the points when the squad needed a little extra lift. In his first year of competition, Chip Houmes proved to be a great competitor as well as a fine athlete. His 440 yd dashes were among the most exciting events of the year. Look for these 3 boys to leave quite a scoring gap on next years A squad, but also to mature and become even stronger young men who will help the high school track program considerably. Backing up these 3 were 5 other boys, fiercly competitive and gentlemen all: Todd Totheroh lshows potential as a distance runnerl, Bill Reed lcan really fly in short dashesb, Brad Young la big plus in 220 and field eventsl, and Mike Penicook and Lyndon Swartz lpartners in shot put and discusl. The greatest moment of the season was at the conference track meet at Milford where the A squad 1. s brought home the 3rd place trophy which now rests in the Wellington trophy case, e , ' 1 fl b 5 1 f 'Z'f13zgfgii:1, w v , W 'MA ., 1 4 1 iH1.'f'jP2'fg,!: ' -,ivfvxfnx .
