The record of the team was seven wins and two losses. These losses came at the hands of the teams from Huron and Amherst. The Dukes were not rated among the best teams, but in non conference games with other leading teams Wel- lington trounced these leaders thoroughly. The Dukes also handed New London, their arch rival, a loss with a score of 32 to O, thus advancing one third of t'he way towards keeping another Ameri- can Legion Trophy. The attack was spearheaded by returning letter- men. The backs were John Dickason, Lee Grissinger, Richard McKenzie, and john Brown, a junior, who greatly improved as the season progressed. The forward wall consisted of ends Dale Ziegler, Mike Harris, Carl Crapog tackles Jim Herrick, Keith Sugaskig guards Jim Vickers, Walter Moon, Richard Robinson, and centers Ray Fehlan and Norman VARSIT Hines. Place kicker, John Wilkinson, also was an especial help to the team. John Dickason was the leading scorer in Lorain county' this year with one hundred points. SENIO PLAYERS On these pages we honor the thirteen boys who this year retired from high school football. Their pictures appear here and on adjoin- ing pages. These boys, who are all enthusiastic football fans, have given the followers of the team many evenings of thrills and good football enjoyment. The boys have played the sport for a varying number of years, as some started in junior high school, while others participated only in the last few years. Of course, while they all played with equal vigor, some played with a good deal more success than others. john Dickason, for in- stance, captured the county football crown by out scoring all other high school football players. john scored a grand total of one hundred points. Many of these boys were also named on the All Conference Team, which is considered the high football honor in this area. Above, Left to Right: Walt Moon, Norman Hines, Ray Fehlan. They were: john Dickason, guardg Dick McKenzie, forward, Keith Sugaski, guard, and Dale Ziegler, center. The junior was Mike Harris. Mike played forward. Co-captains, McKenzie and Ziegler, led the team in many stirring victories, which obtained for them the Lakeland Conference Championship. High- point man was Dick McKenzie. Mike Harris came in second. Mike scored 30 points at the South Amherst game. Keith Sugaski was third. This was Keith's first year as a varsity regular. Fourth was Dale Zieg- ler. He did an excellent job at Pivot. Last, but not least, was john Dickason, who scored 20 points for the team at the Amherst game. Coach Shellhouse will be losing four of his first five players next year. Mike Harris will be the remaining one. We are very appreciative of Mr. Shellhouse's fine coaching, and we hope that his good fortune continues. This team in the opinion of many people is one of the best in years. Its record w'as 16 - l. The loss C6O- 579 was encountered with Vermilion, who ended up in second place. Wellington beat them at the next engagement 73 -68. RESERVE BASKETBALL The Reserve team had quite a few exciting games this season. They won many of these. The team showed great promise sporadically, but they didnit keep it up ,at all times. Consequently, they didn't have quite the season that was predicted for them by their coach, Mr. Gove. Mr. Gove is training many boys to be good bas- ketball players next season, and all hope that he will keep it up. Wellington .A .. ,TTI9 Amherst . We cer- tainly want to congratulate them for a job well done. The picture directly above is of the two coaches, who have trained the boys through their high school basketball careers. Mr. Shellhouse coached the Varsity and Mr. Gove instructed the Reserves. Counter-clockwise from there, the pic- tures are of Rich McKenzie, Kieth Sugaski, Dale Ziegler, Carl Crapo, and john Dickason. BASKETBALL FIRST TEAM This page is set aside to praise the five boys who put Wellington High School on the basketball honor roll. These five, after many years of playing the sport together, have succeeded in becoming one of the best teams in the territory. The boys from left to right are, John Dickason C5'l lub, Dale Zieg- ler f5'll D, Mike Harris C6'O D, Keith Sugaski, C6'O j, and Dick McKenzie, 5,ll D. The boys aren't very tall when judged as Basketball players, but they are not lacking in speed, endurance, co-ordina- tion, intelligence and teamwork. There has been much comment on the last item. ln their games no one boy endeavored to capture all the glory for him- self. The team would have suffered greatly from the loss of any of them. So boys, Wellington wants to thank you for all the time and toil that you've con- tributed to make this team a good one, We're proud of you and we want to be certain that you know it. l s 4 5 E 2 n 3 i 5 s E l 5 2 E 5 i , E r 2 E J a BASEBALL The above picture is of the 1956 baseball team, which was coached by Mr. Shellhouse. As this year's team has not begun practice at the time of this writing it is impossible to have a photo- graph of them. Besides the class plays, the home-coming, and the junior-Senior, there are several other big events which must be remembered too. Every year these events are performed in chronological or- der to make another school year complete. The first traditional event which occurs every year is the assembly on the first day of school. Im- mediately, the football season introduces more acti- vities, which we consider part of our local heritage. There is Dad's night, when all the proud team fa- thers appear wearing their sonsi numbers. Then comes the New London Game and the daubing of store windows with Bon Ami. The previous night there is the Bon Fire Cpictmfe LZb01!6D and pep rally. On the night of the big game, there is the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Following the game the American Legion trophy is awarded to the victorious team. Thus ends the football season. The next week there is the Senior Class play, which climaxes long weeks of practice. Soon thereafter basketball starts, as it always does. The Christmas Program is the next thing on the agenda. The A Cappella usually sing the reli- gious songs and the Chorus those of a lighter variety. Then just before the Christmas vacation, which could also be named as a tradition, we have the annua-l Christmas assembly. At this affair there is usually a movie. Often the Choir sings and there are Christ- mas readings. Upon return from Christmas vacation there are exams waiting for all Wellington High School's stu- dents. Should they be mentioned as part of the tra- ditions of the school? We wonder, and yet every year they are there-a definite part of our years in high school. Basketball season draws to a close with the ad- vent of the tournaments. Following on its heels is the junior Class play. Shortly after the play comes Spring vacation, and after that, the Junior-Senior. Into this one dance the Juniors will have put incal- cuable amounts of time, effort, and lest we forget it, money. The Prom becomes a memory, and the Seniors begin to realize that they have very little time re- maining. The spring program comes and goes. As is usual, it is even better than the ones in pre- ceding years. Next the Final Exams arrive, and also, of course, the studying that antedates them. Theyire almost a legend themselves. The Recognition Day Assembly soon becomes a past event. It is a day set aside to give credit to those persons who have won scholastic honors and to those who have served their school in other ways. Graduation approaches. Baccalaureate arrange- ments come, and after much practice the event itself is a thing of the past. Graduation follows suit and all fifty-odd Seniors receive diplomas and then sud- denly they find themselves alumni. There is now a new group of Seniors! Once the meeting of the Alumni is over, the school year is finished, com- pleted, done. We can look back over the year with the pleasure of accomplishment. But, it really isn't gone. It's still here, only next year all the things the Seniors did will be done by someone else ....
