UNIOR DUKES Under the able direction of their new coach, Mr. Patesel, the Junior Dukes came up with their share of the wins this season. This game under the lights was most successful and they drew quite a crowd. Much enthusiasm was held and their spirits were high. These boys will soon be coming up into the varsity squad and they are surely showing great signs of improvement. We are all hoping that they will add much to help in winning games for our school and for the School Spirit . +5 V RSITY k BASKETBALL 1. Ewell 1IKt5 The Wellington High School basketball team had a rather touch and go season this year. They did show at times, though, that they could stay with the best of teams, They possessed speed and shooting ability, but lacked the height of the other opponents. The final record stood at five wins and twelve losses. Their best games were the first Fairview and Amherst contests. Besides these and perhaps one or two more games the team and their followers had hoped for a more prosperous season. All the boys did theirsshare of playing this year with Ray Taylor leading the team in total points scored. Jim Wight repre- sented the Dukes in the Annual Press Foul Shooting Contest at the Cleveland Arena. In his tryouts he made 10 out of 10 baskets. A big hand goes to Coach Shellhouse and his varsity boys. BeVier TRACK LETTERME These six returning lettermen plus the many others who will be on the track team this year look back and look forward to the many events and records that they have made and will make. Last year the boys participated in a number of relays and meets, those being the Mansfield Relays, Ohio Wesleyan Relays in the Class B group, Amherst Dual Meet, Wooster Night Relays, Clearview Meet, Southwestern Conference Meet at Rocky River, District Meet at Berea, and the State Meet. The results of these meets were quite satisfying. Recognition should be made especially of the new record that was set by Harold Furcron and Harold Covington, a graduate, in the Two Lap Relay at the Wooster Meet. The two boys ran it in 1:18. Also Harold Furcron qualified for the District Meet and from placing 3rd in the 440 dash he thus qualified himself for the State Meet. The boys seem to specialize in certain fields when it comes to track. The high hurdles and mile run are in line with jim Henes, Phil Sheffield is active in the shot put and the discus, Harold Furcron is busy with the 100 yard dash, 440 run, and the discus, jack Kepler takes part in the 880 relay and the low hurdles, Dick Oney finds his way over the bar in the high jump, and Harold Watters participates in the 880 relay, mile relay, and the broad jump. 1954 TRACK SCHEDULE Fairview Dual Meet Amherst Dual Meet Clearview Triangle Meet Wellington-Medina-River Meet Ohio Wesleyan Relays Southwestern Conference Meet Clearview Meet District Meet Lakeland Conference State Meet J.
