Languages Along with welcoming Mrs. Hayes as new department head of foreign languages, the language department continues to be involved in many activities this year. Also, Miss Tavoularis is a new member of the staff. The popularity of foreign language is still increasing: classrooms are still crowded and three teachers are without permanent rooms. The language department has been very active with two exchange trips this year. The exchange to France became very popular last year. Fifteen students went to Savigney-sur-Orge in February. The exchange trip to Spain, brand new at Wellesley, has also been well received. Twelve students traveled to Barcelona in February. For the return por¬ tion of the exchange, the French students will come to Wellesley in March; the Spanish students will visit in September, 1985. Mrs. Hayes is planning on keeping the success and interest in the foreign languages thriving. She feels that the increase in the enrollment of languages reflects a new awareness of the importance of foreign languages to the public in general. She commented that “the goals of the language program are to teach students the basic communication skills in a foreign language while acquainting them with the culture and people of the countries where the language is spoken.” Through this preparation, students will be able to express themselves more freely and to rely on these skills throughout their lives. “Sorry Mr. Haggerty, tryouts are next week.” (Mr. Haggerty and sons Eric and Mark) Mary Hayes. Mathematics At a recent national convention, educators from all over the country decided that a statistics course should be added to high school cur- riculums. But this was not news to the Wellesley High Mathematics Computer department which has taught statistics since 1973. This department has always offered strong and modern curriculum. Continuing this effort, an Advanced Placement Computer course will be offered next year. The math department, under the guidance of Mr. An- drews, is also proud that 96% of our students take 3 or 4 years of math, giving them sufficient background for future schooling. One of the teachers “preparing” students for the future is Mrs. Carmondy, who is returing this year from a maternity leave. Mr. Sullivan James Sullivan Joseph Andrew. Dept.
