He came to us when we were lacking pride and enthusiasm for our school and has slowly but steadily tried to build it back up. Already, Mr. Farrell has organized groups from the student body, to clean up our school and to organize a student senate. Both of these activities have enabled the four classes to merge and develop a united school feeling. Mr. Ted Tripp stated, “Mr. Farrell is totally school oriented and bases his decisions according to the best interests of the entire school population. Mr. Farrell is supportive of both staff and students which can sometimes be a very difficult thing to do.” Even though Mr. Farrell believes the Wellesley High School has an ex¬ ceptional academic program, he plans to closely review and strengthen the curriculum, thus, making our school stand out even more, academically. Mr. Carbone commented, “Mr. Farrell is concerned with meeting the needs of the students, being supportive to the faculty, and presenting the best educational atmosphere possible. He has many positive, definite goals he wants to accomplish but which will take some time. He is very supportive to the faculties ' needs.” As for other future goals, Mr. Farrell would like to add some programs to the school so students can actively become more involved. As he stated, “I want the students to want to take a part in their school.” Our new principal also seems determined to instill more school spirit and pride to the Wellesley High School students. Surely with his enthusiasm Mr. Farrell will do just that. As Jon Young of the class of ' 86 said, “He’s one of the few principals I’ve known who really looks out for the kids. He wants the kids to be happy more than anything.” William E. Farrell Peter Vasaturo, Ass t Prin Richard Carbone. Ass t Prin. Nazieem Smith, Mr. Farrell and his secretary Joan Cussen. Physical Education Peter Loiter Michael Mastro Physical Education is a mandatory course but the varie¬ ty and flexibility of the programs available make it both in¬ teresting and a learning experience. Students may chose from team sports, which includes sports such as soccer, softball, and the ultimate, frisbee, or they may chose a more individual related activity such as tennis or weight lifting. Adventure is also available, this course tests your body and mind as well as instilling “survival instincts.” To this list of courses such as the one-on-one program are also available through Physical Education. In this pro¬ gram, students with obesity problems and physical han¬ dicaps can obtain the extra attention they require. Mr. Loiter during a reflective moment. Seniors and juniors chose from a wide range of half-year and full-year electives. Freshmen and sophomores took year-long English courses. Among the courses offered to seniors and juniors were Shakespeare, Man in Conflict, Comedy and Satire, and Modern Mass Communications. Seniors could also take the year-long course Humanities, a combination of English and History and Juniors could elect America for which they received credit in both American History and Literature. Also, Miss Tavoularis is a new member of the staff. The popularity of foreign language is still increasing: classrooms are still crowded and three teachers are without permanent rooms. The language department has been very active with two exchange trips this year. The exchange to France became very popular last year. Fifteen students went to Savigney-sur-Orge in February. The exchange trip to Spain, brand new at Wellesley, has also been well received. Twelve students traveled to Barcelona in February. For the return por¬ tion of the exchange, the French students will come to Wellesley in March; the Spanish students will visit in September, 1985. Mrs. Hayes is planning on keeping the success and interest in the foreign languages thriving. She feels that the increase in the enrollment of languages reflects a new awareness of the importance of foreign languages to the public in general. She commented that “the goals of the language program are to teach students the basic communication skills in a foreign language while acquainting them with the culture and people of the countries where the language is spoken.” Through this preparation, students will be able to express themselves more freely and to rely on these skills throughout their lives. “Sorry Mr. Haggerty, tryouts are next week.” (Mr. Haggerty and sons Eric and Mark) Mary Hayes. But this was not news to the Wellesley High Mathematics Computer department which has taught statistics since 1973. This department has always offered strong and modern curriculum. Continuing this effort, an Advanced Placement Computer course will be offered next year. The math department, under the guidance of Mr. An- drews, is also proud that 96% of our students take 3 or 4 years of math, giving them sufficient background for future schooling. This year, the Science Department purchased a few Apple computers, for use as a teaching aid. “The computer is a means to stimulate interest in the students,” says Mr. Lydon. Specific lab data may be obtained; as well as more accurate lab data in half the time. This year teachers tried to help the students, who are participating in the science achievement tests by teaching along the guidelines of the test. Our well- stocked library has many valuable resources and helpful librarians, who have worked with the WHS library for years and know its facilities. The library’s new equipment in¬ cludes computers and a new VCR. The conference room remains a meeting place for many classes to watch movies on the VCR and to listen to guest speakers. Finally, the library uses its shelves and other spaces to display student publications, artwork, and han¬ dicrafts (e.g. wall clocks made in Ind. Arts.) UNDERCLASSMEN 96 97 Class cf 1986 J timers The Junior Class got into the swing of things at Wellesley High School early this year. At the end of September, they held a skating party at the Babson skating rink that proved to be a great success. Later, the class officers scheduled a November dance that was a surprising success. The class was able to attract a healthy portion of the underclassmen and raise over eight hundred dollars. The annual ski trip to Mount Onford in Quebec gave skiers a “natural high” as they sliced the virgin powder and took in the brisk Canadian air. It was an enjoyable and memorable weekend for all. The Junior Prom was held in June and in high style as befits the class. The lavishly decorated Hillcrest in Waltham was the scene of the festivities which continued on later in the form of “After parties.” The year ended on a successful noteas we look forward to a great Senior year. Beys Scccer Although off to a slow start, the Wellesley 1984 Boys Soccer team completed their outstanding season with an impressive 11-3-6 record. Under the strong coaching direc¬ tion of Mr. “Pistol Pete” Loiter, the team managed to immensely improve during the season. Throughout the 18 games that were played, the commendably solid defense, led by Bay State All Star Sam Sicchio, Co-Captain Andy Eichorn, and goalie Kent Wian, only let up 5 goals, fourteen of the games were shut-outs. The entire team, including seniors Brady Mutrie, Chris Brand, Dmitri Kapalis and Co-Captain Mark Egan who was the only player in the league to be unanimously voted as a Bay State All Star, added much leader¬ ship, and support during the season. The team progressed greatly which was seen in their upset of Dennis-Yarmouth in the League Tournament. Coach Loiter and all of the members experienced an all-around great season. Despite the absence of the talented senior members next year, the team wil l continue to produce quality performances that live up to the Wellesley Soccer tradition. 6 Milton 0 4 Braintree 0 0 Fram. (Carolyn Beckedorf) Ann O’hearn, Ann Bierbaum DYN-O-MITE Girls’ Setter The Wellesley Girls Soccer Team had an outstanding 1984 season. They shared the league title with archrival Needham including a 15-1 record. Much of the team ' s success was due to the magnificent spirit of all the members. The team, led by Coach Dick Heller, and co-captains Vicky Devito and Amy Glynn, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Eastern Mass, tournament after an exciting season. Unfortunately, they lost by one goal in a game with two overtime periods. Despite the loss, Coach Heller and the entire team were pleased with their accomplishments. Bay State All-Star awards were given to Vicky Devito, Amy Glynn, and Carolyn Beckedorff. Honorable Mentions were received by Ann O. Anne Bierbaum and Heidi Pomfret. Although many fine players will graduate next year, the special quality of perfor¬ mance exhibited by Wellesley girl soccer players will continue to exist. 7 Braintree 0 10 Fram. Unfortunately, with a 0-9-1 record, the hard work and dedication didn’t produce the results that were hoped for. Tri-Captains Dan Farrell, Scott Larkin, and Tom Sullivan anchored the squad in spirit and in effort as senior Jack Hinchy quarterbacked the offense. Larkin, the team’s leading rusher with Scott “B” provided the highlights of this year’s season and was rewarded by being voted as team MVP by his fellow players. The team also depended on seniors Lino Pucci and Victor Corda for strenght in the line, and upon Bruce “M” Pomfret, Steve Veccari and George Potts elsewhere on the field. The underclassmen look forward to twelve returning starters next year. That team, to be led by Captains Paul MacDonald, Scott Pomfret, Mike Hester will be the first in 3 years to have the same returning coaches coach. Bay State All-Stars Kirsten Allen, Mollie Schell, and Jen Smith, provided much of the offensive play while assisted by the solid dependability of Pammy Brown, Marjie Eldridge, and Janice O’Co nnell. The next line of attack, comprised of Suzanne Dileo, Rachel Levine, and Nancy O’Glishen was never far behind. The Wellesley defense also contributed to much of the team’s success, with Barbara Burnell, Jen McCarthy, and Wendy Weber controlling the midfield. The goal was staunchly guarded by sweeper Keb- by Beale and goalie Penny Rossano. The team proved to be a unified and versatile force despite occasional injury and though the Raiders’ opportunity for post-season play was dashed, it was dashed by missing one qualifying point. Led superbly by Coach Chris Molonea and co-captains Penny Rossano and Mollie Schell, the team finished the year with pride and looks to juniors Cynthia Howells, Suzanne Pointras, Chris Robinson and Beth Turney to provide strong continuity in 1985. 0 Milton 2 8 Braintree 0 8 Fram. The Raider team topped last year’s success with a record of 15-3 and placed second in the league. However, even though being second, the girls have the satisfaction of knowing they beat every team at least once and the League Champs twice! They also made first round of tournament play. The excitement of the season was due to the outstanding leadership and talent of tri¬ captains Betsy Quinan, Jane Riley, and Cheryl Gill. All 3 senior captains, along with senior member, Zibi Turtle, made the Bay State League All Star team. Most of the games were close with remarkable plays by the captains, Betsy Avinan, Cheryll Gill, and Lisa Hines. With six senior star members leaving, including Sharon Alcorn, Kate ‘‘Sharpshooter’ Fallon, Cheryl Gill, and Betsy Quinan, next year’s team will have a large hole, in body and spirit, to fill. The swimmers who qualified, led by Cynthia Kangos, placed Wellesley third place in the sectional competition and fifth in the State competition. The fabulous 1984 season was the result of the hard work and efforts of everyone on the over-30 member team, led by co-captains Renata Aylward and Liz Stuart. The leading members of the team, Wende O’Brien (42-3), Ann O’Hearn, and Beth Dixon, continually played well. Five seniors will be leaving the team, including Catherine Walsh and Sue Mooney, but Seiger isn’t worried because of the great depth of the team. There are several juniors who will be very influential in next year’s season. The program was organized by Emily Anthony, Heidi Pomfret and Liz Weil from Student Government, to address the pro¬ blems of student alcohol abuse. The week included a number of speakers, films and discussions. A few highlights of the week were, the film entitled “Epidemic,” a speaker from AA, and a presentation by the SADD organization. The event which began the week was the play “Eddie Was Here,” presented by the Wellesley High School students. The play centered around a teenager, Eddie LaRiviere whose involvement with drugs and alcohol led to his death. This was a true story, and no script was used in the hope that the student’s feel¬ ings would accentuate the true meaning of the play. After the play, Eddie’s brother, Kevin LaRiviera, delivered a touching speech about his experiences with Eddie. Lead roles of “Eddie Was Here” were played by David Hadley, Peter Civetta, Michelle O’Hearn and Sandi Hammond. Lesser roles were played by Mark Engle, Todd O’Brien, Jessica Donovan and Tracey Keeler. An all-student discussion takes place. Dave Hadley, Penny Rossano David Hadley and Michelle O’Hearn lead the play Eddie Was Here. Guest singers appear at Eddie Was Here. Over the years we had heard from friends, parents, and siblings, about the last glorious fling of the high school career. In many respects, such as college acceptances, spirit days and the freedom given to seniors, it was an exhilarating year. But it was not all fun and glory; for those going to college, ap¬ plications were another major, and the work load of the first semester was heavy and very important. In our athletic pursuits, seniors took on the responsibilities of the oldest in the school; celebrating in victory but taking responsibility, in defeat. According to some, the class of 1985 lacked the spirit and hysteria of past classes. That is something to be proud of because we are a class of individuals. We each showed our spirit in our own way, rather than in one continuous display. The class of 1985 did not put on facades; after we have forgotten the teachers, classes, grades we had, we will still remember the good times and friends who made our senior year a different ex¬ perience for each but enjoyable for all. — John Peterson and Amy Horan No explanation needed 240 v Editors-in-Chief Amy Horan aid John Peterson This is how we all felt after yearbook deadlines!
