ELLESLEYAN ’68 WELLESLEY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WELLESLEY HILLS, MASSACHUSETTS TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION I know that all of us have had a soreness of spirit since Miss Teed ' s death. To summon up a remembrance of her days with us is urgent. Miss Teed knew who she was and why she was here. In her teaching she was incandes¬ cent and artful; she had a sureness of touch. Her mind ran joyous races. Incisive words tasted good to her. I used to come away from her classes renewed and always sur¬ prised. She dredged up from some mysteri¬ ous source energies that never flagged. This sort of teaching going on day after day, year after year? How could she sustain it? Obviously, her intense commitment would never allow her to be oth r than she was. She asked so little for herself but gave so generously of her substance. She was gal¬ lant and strong; I never heard a murmur of self-pity or complaint; she accepted her lot with grace. Hers was a rare maturity which came from her realization that “the unexamined life is not worth living ' How good it is to think of her and her achievements. How necessary it is that we be sensitive to her afterglow. W. A. Crockett Alice M. Teed There we shall rest and we shall see; we shall see and we shall love; we shall love and we shall praise. Thus will it be WITHOUT END AT THE END. St. Augustine i IN ME MORI AM Robert Timothy Gladwin Had he lived, this would have been the graduation year for Robert Timothy Glad¬ win. His goal was the medical profession, and high school was only the introduction to further scientific studies in college. Of course, Timmy never attained his goal, but in the hope that others could, the Robert Timothy Gladwin Scholarship Fund was set up to help biology students of distinction. By means of this fund, Timmy ' s dream of being a doctor lives on. Timmy ' s memory lives on, as well, in the minds of his fellow students and friends. He is described as a person who loved to live and who never let a moment pass without getting something from it. Timmy was a good baseball player and an avid and very accomplished golfer. He also enjoyed competing in all water sports. He had a quick wit, an able mind, and wasn ' t afraid to use either. Would that we all exhibited more of the traits that Timmy showed. To us, it seems tragic that the life was snuffed out of one in whom the will to live was so strong. Let us remember. 5 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To the Class of 1968, Looking back over a score of years as Principal of Wellesley Senior High School, I can honestly say that no year has been so challenging as this, your senior year. As a class you have been aware of the day-to-day prob¬ lems that have made this a most lively school year. Your own class, together with your schoolmates in the two lower classes, has inspired more complete dialogues among stu¬ dents, teachers, and parents than ever before. It is to be hoped that with this exchange of views a better under¬ standing has been arrived at among all concerned. No healthy society needs to fear differences of opinion among its members. Such differences of opinions in our school life and learning how to deal with them will better prepare each of you to cope with all the differences of opinions you will meet in the years to come. The world you are entering, whether it be on a college campus, in the world of work, or in the armed forces of your country, is faced with more serious problems than ever before. May it be true that your high school years have given you a better understanding of how best to attack all these problems with a firm determination to give of your best in seeking a solution. Good luck and God bless you all. Samuel M. Graves EDITOR’S MESSAGE Bill Guild, Editor-in-Chief For the Class of 1968 a meaningful and necessary section of life has been completed, although the ideas and skills which will become a vital part of our adult lives have only just begun to develop. So the high school years become a transitional period, a little more realistic and freer than the junior high school years, yet only a taste of things to come. Of course, the senior year has a special meaning to us as a class, and no single conception of it can fit each individual graduating member. There are events and situations we will think about as a class, the traditional events such as college applica¬ tions and senior activities, but there are also events which will remain personally our own. It happens every year, and each year is unpredictably different from the pre¬ ceding one. Each class ' s identity seems to come out spontaneously, only after en¬ countering a variety of specific situations. At one point there was a warning cry of student apathy which was met head on by the Student Council. They helped in increas¬ ing attendance at rallies and athletic events. Certainly the successful student-faculty dis¬ cussion groups and open meetings helped the students and faculty to see each other more clearly, creating a much closer har¬ mony between the two. The relatively new humanities class and the completely new diversification of the History Department are examples of a more specialized curric¬ ulum at Wellesley High School where each student can choose, to a large degree, a course suitable to his desires and future needs. Perhaps it is the realization that gradua¬ tion is only a step away which makes the senior year different from the preceding two. For the first time in our lives there is no class above us in this school, and we tend to take our responsibilities more seriously. For instance, when a lack of spirit is noticed, certainly the whole school is affected, but it is to the seniors that people look for a remedy for the situation. This year ' s class certainly has handled its re¬ sponsibility well, not only by encountering many situations but also by utilizing the diverse accomplishments of every member of the class. The Wellesleyan staff has attempted to record the intangibles, the spirit behind this year ' s class, as well as the events; the sports and activities, but most of all, the people who made this year what it was. 7 8 14 Those who teach, or allow learning, instruct, or at least offer a suggestion. The 1967 football season has ended with the Red Raiders posting a 3—6—0 record. Although the record shows only three wins, three of the losses were by one touchdown or less. Only twice during the course of the season were the Raiders outplayed, against Braintree and Milton. On these days the offense just could not move the ball, and the defense was weak. The defensive unit as a whole was erratic, but was capable of turning in truly outstanding performances as it did in four or five games during the year. The offensive unit was an explosive one, always a threat to produce the long pass play for a touchdown. They were unable, however, to develop a strong, reliable running game. Wellesley dropped the first two games af the season, to Braintree and Norwood. Wellesley had not lost an opening game in eight years, but this was the record-breaker, losing to Braintree, 25—12. The next week Norwood came back to overtake Wellesley in the closing minutes after the Red Raiders had gone ahead early in the fourth quarter, 28—20. Against Framingham North, Wellesley posted its first victory, in a close battle, 16—15. They followed this up by beating Walpole, 14—0, with the defense turning in the first of their two shutouts. Victories and defeats seemed to come in pairs as the Raiders lost the next two to Framingham South and Milton, 20—12 and 24—8, respectively. The Framingham South contest was a very even match, but the Whiz Kids walked all over Wellesley. The following week ' s game proved to be the high point of the season, a 6—0 win over bitter rival Natick. This game would have been a highlight to any season. The Red Raiders marched into Natick 22-point underdogs. The Redmen had started poorly, but in the previous three games had begun to produce amazing results on the field. Natick was outplayed from the opening whistle. Time and again Wellesley ' s inspired defense stopped Natick, with Rob Spears, John Napoleone, and Jim Guzelian making count¬ less key tackles. The game remained scoreless until the final minute of play. Rob Spears set up the touchdown with his second interception of the day. Then, with the ball on Natick ' s twenty-yard line, Dick Coughlin dropped back to pass, saw a hole, and slipped through on a dazzling run to score with fifty-five seconds left in the game. Wellesley ' s defense easily held on the rest of the way, to cap off a truly perfect ball game by the Red Raiders. After this game, the rest of the season was a let-down as Wellesley had to play the two teams tied for first place, Dedham and Needham. Both games were close, and both times Wellesley was on the short end. The team lost 16—6 to Dedham, and 13—6 to Needham on Thanksgiving Day in the pouring rain. Injuries played a key role in Wellesley ' s weak record this year. Captain Rob Spears was injured in a pre-season game and did not return to full action until the Natick game. Halfback Mike Hart, one of the League ' s best backs, was hurt in the Framingham South game, and only returned to face Needham on the final day of the season. Speedster Andy Howard, who is a constant breakaway threat, was, lost for the season after two games. Mark Laux, starting tackle in this! his sophomore year, had his football career end in the Walpole game after receiving a serious kidney injury. First-string end Bob Saveland broke his wrist and was out for many weeks. Because of these injuries, the team leadership fell on a smaller number of players. Captain Phil Santucci, who along with Dick Coughlin, winner of the J.C. Player of the Year Award, was the most consistently fine player on the team, kept the team ' s spirit high all year. As Head Coach George Kerivan has said, seniors are the heart of the ball club. This year ' s seniors were John Napoleone, George Medford, Bill Mutrie, Larry Frasch, Don Crane, George Burr, Bob Saveland, Ed Bryant, Mike Hart, Andy Howard, Dick Coughlin, Rob Spears, Gory Gosney, Phil Santucci, Bob Quatrale, Bucky Sullivan, Jim Guzelian, Bob Wickham, and Eric Sheldon. Many underclassmen got to play this year as well. They were George Doran, Bab Boucher, Jim Canova, Dave Johnson, Sephus Osborn, Gary Canoni, Bob Littlefield, Phil Elmassian, Jeff Cummings, Larry Corda, Jay Robbins, Bob Rupp, Jim Rowan, Bob Paluzzi, John Walsh, Pete Nahass, Jeff Spillman, Steve Sutherland, Hugh Johnston, and Mark Laux. Jeff Spilman was the winner of the Ciczluk-Weisenbach Trophy as the outstanding sophomore. Robert Quatrale was the winner of the most improved player award, and tri-captains elected for the 1968 season were Phil Elmassian, Dave Johnson, and George Doran. Although the 1967 season was not a winning one, it will be remembered by those on the team and those connected with the team as an exciting year, one we can all be proud of. Captain Dick Noonan This year ' s soccer team led by coaches Phil Dodge and Joe Heller, and co-captains Dick Noonan and Tom McRann, had a very successful season, finishing third i n the Bay State League, 9—4—1. A title contender through most of the season, the team won five straight games before tying Needham and losing to undefeated Braintree. The team won many of their games in overtime periods, including their best effort of the year, against Framingham North. The losses also occurred in overtime. Outstanding for Wellesley all year were Noonan and McRann, Jack Horack, John Bossange, Pete Chamberlin, Doug McClaran, Ted Dale, and Tom Villa tending the goal. Soccer has fast become one of the most popular sports in the school, and with boys turning out in large numbers, it is felt that Wellesley will be producing fine teams for years to come. Coached by Mr. St. Cyr and led by captains Crawford Lindsey and Wayne Coddington, the team finished 7—2, tied with Milton for second place in the Bay State League. Winners of meets for Wellesley were Crawf Lindsey, Charlie Lindsey, (brothers) and Ned McFadden. Ten different Wellesley runners cracked the difficult fourteen-minute mark on our home course this year. Strong senior runners this year were Lindsey and McFadden, Wayne Coddington, Phil Walsh, and Stan Burns. Prospects for the future look good with many fine underclass¬ men runners. They are Charlie Lindsey, Mike Devlin, Mike Donahue, Jeff Dosdall, Red Coleman, Joe Murray, Dave McNeish, and Jim Parker. Although riddled by injuries all year long, the team was strong enough to win the big meets when necessary. The high point of the season was a close 28— 34 victory over Natick in a key meet. Third Row: Emily Eaton, Pim Ramsay, Mary Lou Sullivan, Pam Bradley, Doreen Donahue, Katy Sullivan, Joy Johnson, Chris Helwig, Judy McGuire, Bonnie Galagan, Debbie Laurie. This year ' s Field Hockey Team leads the list of Wellesley ' s outstanding girls ' sports teams. Mrs. Cantrell did a very com¬ mendable job with the girls as they fought to the Bay State League Championship with an 8—1 record in League Com¬ petition. The only loss was a forfeit due to the use of an ineligible player in the first game of the season. The overall record, including all non-League games, was 9—2—1. The team ' s strong defense was led by goalies Carol Stuart and Starr Bruno, fullbacks Mary Lou Sullivan and Sue Marchetti, and halfback Co-Captain Anne Scannell. The offense was sparked by forwards Cindy Fay, Pim Ramsay, Karen Epifano, Pam Bradley, and Co-Captain Jane Fumia. The season came to a climax in the last game of the season, against Needham, to decide the League championship. The affair was decided in Wellesley ' s favor by means of a goal by Pam Bradley, as the score ended with 1—0. The future looks good for the field hockey team as the J.V. squad piled up an impressive 11—0—1 record. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION The Intramural Basketball Association has become a winter haven for football players and other athletes looking for a nice non-contact sport to while-away the long afternoons. This year, the I.B.A. enjoyed its greatest season ever, as it does every year. At deadline time, the Mustangs, Ponies, Broncos, and the Herd had all but clinched playoff berths. In late December the annual I.B.A. player draft was held, and Bob Littlefield had the honor of being the Number One draft choice for the 1968 campaign. The season began January 2 and runs until early March, when the All-Stars take on the undefeated faculty five. Seasonal highlights included several overtime games, numerous upsets, and Greg Howard ' s smashing the season ' s single-scoring record with well over two-hundred points. This year the I.B.A. witnessed the bowing-out of Ed Bryant as Commissioner, a post he had held for three years. There wasn ' t a dry eye in the gym as he hung up his sneakers and handed over the official League ball to new Commissioner Dave Barnes. Everyone, however, was supremely confident of the continued strong success of the I.B.A. in the seasons to come. 52 53 Front Row: Debby Lovewell, Martha Chandler, Biddy Griffiths, Undo Havlin, Nancy Brown, Nancy Johnson, Nancy Grandine. Second Row : Jane Britton, Mary Jean Martinez, Kathy Maxwell, Edith Haffenreffer, June Kuniholm, Nancy Segel, Sue Coyle. Fourth Row : Debby Kelsch, Chris Palmer, Carol Jacoby, Nancy Cameron, Michelle Varga Jodi Cunniff. 0 SWIMMING Once again Wellesley sported two fine swimming teams.- The Boys ' Team, coached by Mr. Hartwell and assisted by Mr. Wood, compiled a record of 5—2 at mid season. Co-cap¬ tains Bob Brew, who swam the freestyle, and Bill Larsen, in individual medley, greatly helped the team achieve this record. The team ' s strongest point was balance, with top- notch swimmers in each event. In the freestyle sprints, along with Bob Brew was Tom Hutchinson. The distance freestyle was handled by Marty Wolfe. Underclassmen played an im¬ portant role as well. John O ' Connor was the top backstroke competitor; Mike Ewing led the field in breastroke; and Joe Murray was tops in the butterfly event. Jerry Beck led the divers. With the strong team they have, our swimmers look forward to good showings in the League meet and the Eastern Massachusetts Swimming Meet. The Girls ' Swimming Team, led by captains Biddy Griffith and Lindo Havlin, and coached by Mrs. Catinella, had an 8—1 record by the end of February. The managers, Marty de Bethune and Kathy Ross, have worked diligently to orga¬ nize and perfect the team. In this, the team ' s fifth year of competition, they hope to retain their perennial first-place trophies in the League and Eastern Massachusetts Champion¬ ship Meet. With outstanding swimmers such as Debby Kelsch, Linda Davin, Biddy Griffiths, Chris Palmer, Cindy Johnston, Charlotte Jones, Cathy Hegarty, and Sue Coyle, it should not be very difficult. Carol Cook will be returning next year for another undefeated season in diving. Bill Larsen and Kent Howard get off to a flying stort. Front Row: Ken Howard, Bob Caruso, Bill Larsen, Tom Hutchinson, Marty Wolf, John McEvoy, Chris Bennett, Brad Chandler, Jerry Beck. Second Row: Mr. Hartwell, Dave McNeish, Joe Murray, John O ' Connor, Bob Bennett, Fletcher Longley, Mike Ewing, Peter Robinson, Dave Patten, Bill Hewett, Bob Kinkaid. 55 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL For the second consecutive year, the Girls ' Varsity Basket¬ ball Team finished in a first-place tie with Braintree. The girls compiled a very admirable 7—1 record in Bay State League competition, suffering their only loss to Framingham North by one point. Their overall record was 9—2. The climb to the top was made possible by the unity and amazing enthusiasm exhibited by all of the members, as well as tremendous coaching on the part of Mrs. Cantrell. This year there was a fine balance of shooters including seniors: Co-Captain Anne Scannell; Carol Stuart, Linda Roberts; juniors: Cindy Fay, Pirn Ramsay, Jane Crook, and Pam Bradley. A powerful defensive unit rounded out the team and was made up of three seniors: Pat Nahass, Mary Lou Sullivan, and Co-Captain Dorene Donahue, with one very capable junior, Ev Jealous. The goal for next year ' s team is to be undefeated, and with the many returning varsity players this goal seems to be well within reach. Front Row: Pat Sarlien, Linda Roberts, Mary Lou Sullivan, Anne Scannell, Dory Donahue, Pat Nahass, Carol Stewart. Second Row: Mrs. Cantrell, coach; Pim Ramsay, Cindy Fay, Ev Jealous, Pam Bradley, Jane Crook, Judy Wong. Front Row: Debby Butts, Karen Epifano, Sandy Snitzer, Jane Fumia, Bridget Goodwin, Beth Glenn, Chris Hoyle, Nancy Parry. Second Row : Laura Harvey, Jane Smith, Patty Hansen, Kate Jewett, Leslie Cuthbertson, Mary Beth Catinella, Julie McVicker, Lynn Lazare, Sandy Jaffe. GIRLS’ GYM TEAM With the help of their new coach. Miss Perry, the Girls 7 Gym Team has had a very successful season so far, holding a record of 4 wins and 1 loss, with 2 meets to go. Already starting to pick up qualifying scores for the Individual State Competition are competitors Lee Dusenbury, Co-Captain; Jane Fumia, Co-Captain; Janice McLaughlin, Debby Butts, Chris Hoyle, Sandy Snitzer, Kate Jewett, and Beth Glenn who, as the most outstanding sophomore, has contributed a great deal to the team ' s quality. Next year ' s team should look forward to another great season with Beth Glenn on the beam, un¬ evens, and floor exercise; Patty Hansen on vaulting; Chris Hoyle on beam and unevens; Julie McVicker on beam and floor exercise; Nancy Perry on floor exercise; and Sandy Snitzer on beam and floor exercise. On March 16th Miss Perry will accompany the team to the State Individual Competition held in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. At this time those quali¬ fying will c ompete with other top-level high school gymnasts for State Championship titles. 57 58 BOYS’ GYM TEAM Captain George Medford performs a crucifix. This year ' s Gymnastics Team, coached by Mr. St. Cyr, presently holds a four-win, two-loss season with four meets remaining. Notable competitors are seniors Mike Hart, high bar and long horse vault; Lincoln Clapp, free exercise and high bar; Ted Papps, side horse, long horse vault; Alan Stone, free exercise, parallel bars; and Captain George Medford, parallel bars, long horse vault, and still rings; juniors Tom Roys, Jim Rowan, Tim Beck, Andy Shirley, and Tom Moore; and sophomore Kurt Minster. A great team effort was put out against Winchester in an 89-81 point victory. Wellesley held its own for the first half of the meet with outstanding routines by Al Stone in free exercise scoring 6.4, and Jim Rowan on side horse scoring 4.7. Our vaulting team, one of the finest in the state, then opened up a lead which continued to build to the end. In vaulting, Jim Rowan, Ted Papps, and Mike Hart netted an event score of 25.2. In the last events, still rings, the win was clinched when Winchester lost the event by 2 points with George Med¬ ford having his best routine with a score of 6.45. The team held together very well and missed taking Need¬ ham by only two points in a close loss of 93-91 points. Again, we had many fine routines with Al Stone who took first in free exercise, Jim Rowan who took honors by two full points on the side horse, Mike Hart, who beat last year ' s state vault¬ ing champ, and George Medford, who took first on the still rings by over a point. This proved to be our most exciting meet. F ront Row: George Medford, Captain; Mike Hart, Ted Papps, Lincoln Clapp, Al Stone, Scott McCabe. Second Row: Jack Keefe, Andy Shirley, Tom Roys, Tom Moore, Bill Lowther, John Gill, Kurt Minster, Ara Yacobian. Third Row: Byron Brown, Jim Rowan, Doug Smith, John Walsh, Bill Pierce, Greg Bigwood, Mr. St. Cyr, Coach. 59 60 Dave Duncan pops from the key. ' Coaching ' s not such an easy job, ya know. ' Front Row: Chris Lovett, Wayne Coddington, Crawf Lindsey, Captain; Rick Weaver, Captain; Tom McRann, George Doran. Second Row: Mr. McDermott, Coach; Doug Stoddart, Bob Saveland, Gary Maupas, Dave Duncan, John Bossange, Greg Hu bier, Ted Dale, Manager. This year ' s basketball team was one of the strongest in recent seasons, despite the 7—7 League record at this time. The team was explosive and often swamped strong opponents. They started the season well by winning the Wayland Holiday Festival, but they began to falter by midseason and did not pick up again until late in the year, finishing strong in the last three games. The year would certainly have to be called a successful one by new Head Coach John McDermott. His cap¬ tains, All-Star Rick Weaver, one of the League ' s top scorers, and Crawf Lindsey were dedicated team leaders. The other regular starters were Dave Duncan, Greg Hubler, and Chris Lovett. Players who saw a lot of floor time were John Bos¬ sange, Bob Saveland, George Doran, Wayne Coddington, and Gary Maupas. A few defensive lapses throughout the season coupled with 2 or 3 more points needed against Natick and Braintree dimmed an otherwise successful season. Several returning juniors and a talented J V squad make expectations for next year promising. WRESTLING This season was expected to be a building year for the Wrestling Team, but they have surprised many by their out¬ standing season. At this point, the Raiders are 6—0 with but one meeting remaining, against strong Needham. At least a tie for the League title is assured, but a victory will top off a perfect season. The best meet of the season came against Norwood in a clash of undefeated teams. Wellesley was down 19—8 but won the last four matches to win 22—19. The team was led this year by captains Dick Noonan who is undefeated and has 8 pins to his record (3rd in state and 1st in New England) and Jim Guzelian (3rd in state) who has wrestled well, despite troublesome knee injuries. The other nine starters are all juniors and sophomores. Returning are juniors Skip Stone, Joe Clement, Dave Hubbell, and Leroy Anderson, and sophomores Karl Minster, Bob Brown, Bob Spellman, Roy Garron, and Hugh Johnston, who is unbeaten in the League action. Because of the fine work Coach Campana has done to develop the young wrestlers, the next few seasons look as if they will be good ones for Wellesley. The Pin! The 1968 Hockey Team was hit hard by graduation with only one or two first-string players returning. The team ' s big problem was the lack of a proficient and regular scorer. They lost the first six games, and the season held few prospects. Coach Hines worked his team hard, nonetheless. The one bright spot was provided by the goal tending co-captain and all-star choice, John Smolens. At this point, the team acquired a little punch as they downed a good Dedham team 4—1 to notch the first victory and climb out of the cellar. They played well but lost the next two games to the League ' s top teams. Third-place Walpole was next on the schedule. Wellesley scored three first-period goals and hung on to win 4—2. They continued the win streak with victories over Framingham North 2—0, and Milton 4—3. The latter was an extremely close game with Bill Mutrie banging home the winning goal with 18 seconds to play. A major reason for the turnabout play of the team has been the development of a high-scoring line, with Co-captain Bill Guild as center, and leading scorer Chris Hurley at wing. The line is backed up by Jack Horack, Bill Mutrie, and Steve Sanger. The defensive tandem of Bob Wickham and Tom Villa has also been vital to the new hockey team. The team now has great spirit and momentum and expects to extend their winning ways, possibly far enough to even the won-lost record by season ' s end. Skate save by John Smolens. Every afternoon this past winter our Ski Team has been practicing for their weekly slalom and cross country races. The combined boys ' and girls ' teams led by Captains Dwight Sargent, Bebo Boyd, Allison Ferris, and Judy Waite, were close contenders with arch-rival Wayland for the League title. This year the team had their first coach, Mr. Mansfield, who helped lead the practices at Blue Hill and at the team ' s own hill that was cleared near Warren School. Scott Powell, Richard Butze, and Bob Rupp helped the boys ' team to a winning season. Betsy Gardner, Rosemarie Penndorf, and Kathy Murray helped keep the girls in the first-place position. The season was highlighted by two exciting races in early March with Woodstock Country Day School in Vermont and the Cambridge School of Weston. Front Row-. TENNIS Tam Higgins Last year ' s Tennis Team did very well, finishing second with a 1-4—4 record. This was below par, however, for a Wellesley team which had bettered this record every year since 1955. The majority of the matches were won or lost by a 3—2 score. Leading the team in victories were Tam Higgins, this year ' s captain, and Rusty Wiggin, the numbers one and two singles player. The number one doubles team, sophomores George Doran and Peter May, had a 13—1 record. Coach Joe Andrew can look forward to returning seniors Dwight Sargent, Captain; Bill Guild, and John Smolens; and juniors John Nadas, Peter May, George Doran, and Scott Powell. Most members of the team have played throughout the summer, so the outlook is bright. Front Row: Carol Schradieck, Deanie Leonard, Pam Bradley, Sally Wyman, June Kuniholm, Becky Patterson. The Girls 7 Tennis Team began with a slow start but com¬ pleted the season with a winning 4—3 record, fifth in the League. The team defeated Dedham, Walpole, Norwood and Framingham North while losing to Framingham South, Needham, and Braintree. The team had a new coach. Miss Judith Sedwick, and was co-captained by Pam Bradley and Sally Wyman. Because the varsity team was composed almost entirely of juniors and sophomores, the team is looking forward to a very successful 1968 season. Sophomores Pam Bradley and Linda Hoffman played first and second singles. Juniors Phyllis Haffenreffer, Betsy Gardner, Becky Patterson, and Shirley Mansfield played the other singles and first doubles. Sophomores Deanie Leonard and June Kuniholm played second doubles. Mr. Burgess recalls the mashie-niblick. The Wellesley High Golf Team, under the direction of Mr. Burgess, ended the season with a 7—2 record and third place in the Bay State League. Captained by Bill Munroe, the team had great help from seniors Scott Tillson, Bruce Bellmare, and Jeff Sexton, and juniors Rich O ' Connor and Rick Lyons. Throughout the season the team was in strong contention for the Bay State League title. They won six straight matches before losing to champion Needham and Framingham South. Then they came back to defeat Framingham North in the final match of the year. Led by next year ' s seniors Rich O ' Connor and Rick Lyons and a strong junior squad, including Dave Barnes and Richie Joseph the team is hopeful for a successful season. Once again Wellesley produced a fine Lacrosse Team last spring as evidenced by their 6—1—1 record. The only loss was to Weston, and the tie was with Wayland. Wellesley won the League title by beating Weston in their rematch game. Team leaders were co-captains Hoagy Ladd and Nancy Spilman, Kay Pawlina and Muff Horack. Juniors Jane Fumia and Anne Scannell tied for high scoring honors. Also strong was junior goalie Carol Stuart. This year ' s team should do well with Jane Fumia, Anne Scannell, Carol Stuart, and many other juniors and sophomores returning to fill the gaps. Front Row: Ralph Bulger, Rip Lanpher, Steve Glorioso, Ray Scanned, John Marchetti, Ted Papps, Dick Noonan. Second Row: Coach Kerivan, Edward Sullivan, Bob Wickham, Gary Gosney, Rick Weaver, Dick Coughlin, Richard Forbecker, Bill Mutrie, Chris Lovett, John Napoleone. Rick Weaver, First Base. Dick Coughlin, Shortstop Ted Popps, Catcher Poor spring weather hurt the baseball team in more ways than one last year. Pre-season practice was almost non-exist¬ ent, and as a result of this, and a weak pitching staff, the baseball team finished with a disappointing 4—14 record. There were some outstanding players, however. Ralph Bulger was among the League leaders in batting, and Bucky Sullivan also wielded a powerful bat all year long. Both catcher Steve Glorioso and first-baseman Rip Lanpher made the Bay State League All-Star Team. The highlight of the season was Ric Forbecker ' s 3—0 no-hit victory over Milton. Poor weather throughout the season left the field in poor shape and caused many postponements which left a schedule with 4 or 5 games a week at season ' s end, taxing an already weak staff. Coach Kerivan will have a strong infield returning next year in Chris Lovett, third base; Dick Coughlin, short stop; Bob Wickham, second base; and Rick Weaver, first base. The outfield is also strong, but a few good pitchers will have to be found if Wellesley is to improve much on last year ' s record. Last year ' s track team surprised the League by finishing second with a strong 8—1 record, losing only to champion Braintree. Wellesley came back in a big upset, however, to take the Conference Championship in a thrilling meet which was not decided until the relay, the final event. This was the second straight Conference title for Wellesley, and it was won largely by sophomores and juniors, which augurs well for the future. The team was led by captains Dick Peterson and Curt Rawley in the 100-yard dash; Dave Duncan in the 220; Andy Howard, George Medford, and Frank Emerson in the hurdles; Bob Rupp and Crawf Lindsey in the middle distances; and Ned McFadden and John Patterson in the long distances. Strong in the field events were Mike Hart in the pole vault and Jim Guzelian in the javelin. All but three of these competitors will be back, so the prospects for this year ' s team are bright indeed. In addition to these returning seniors and juniors, many talented sophomores are expected to turn out. The team is now looking for an unprecedented third straight Conference championship, and the outlook is good for their achieving this Phil Elmassian lets it fly. •V. a IK SaHil ' •:.’V fgfeQyi. 88 School is not just a classroom but a small community with possibilities for all to expand. ACTIVITIES ’68 89 STUDENT COUNCIL The officers conduct the weekly meeting. A typical Student Council meeting. This year ' s Student Council had the rare opportunity to expand its activities to serve the school in new and vital areas. The Council rose strongly and eagerly to the occasion. Charged with being a powerless body, and bothered by stu¬ dent dissension and apathy, the Council responded with a series of well-attended open meetings. Such problems as drug use, the dress code, smoking, and study privileges were discussed at the open meetings. From a suggestion put forth at one of the meetings sprang the Student-Faculty Discussion Groups whose twofold purpose was to maintain an open forum and to offer solutions to school problems. Students, teachers, administrators, and parents participated in the discussion groups. In addition to showing leadership in this new area, the Student Council ran their traditional drives and sponsored their traditional activities. Overwhelming and gratifying student support was shown for all programs. Over $825 was collected for WBZ ' s 700 Fund at Christmastime, in this, the second year of the drive. A collection was taken during half time of the Thanksgiving Day football game to support the work of CARE. There are plans to hold a student-faculty dinner-dance to raise $1000 for the Peace Corps to build a school overseas. All Council-sponsored dances broke attend¬ ance records; over 700 students attended the Opening Dance. Wellesley ' s first Computer Dance was a success in December. Finally, and this goes without saying, the Council- sponsored Gym Show and Variety Show were both big hits. The Council was active in state and national activities. Last year, Wellesley hosted the convention of the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. Our own Council president, Phil Santucci, is president of the state organization. Last June, Dwight Sargent and Miss Lorden went as delegates to the national Student Council Convention in Philadelphia. The Wellesley Student Council sent three members to the Leader¬ ship Training Workshop in Westfield last summer. The Student Council attends district conventions during the school year and participates in exchange programs with neighboring high schools and private schools. 90 Front Row: Barbara Fay, Tom Hodgson, John Nadas, Treasurer; Dwight Sargent, Vice-President; Phil Santucci, President; Lucy Loscocco, Secretary; Shirley Mansfield, Corresponding Secretary; Eric Sheldon, Tom McRann. One of the school ' s few exclusive organizations is the Key Club. Only a limited number of students are elected to mem¬ bership each year. The club is affiliated with Kiwanis Club and performs many similar functions. In co-operation with Red Cross, the boys run a retarded children ' s party twice a month at Perrin School. To raise funds for this, the Key Club operates the concession stand at home football games and sells candy for Halloween. In the spring a Key Club dance is put on, and a banquet is usually held at year ' s end. The club does various other service projects for the school and community and awards a sports trophy each year to the outstanding senior athlete. Weekly meetings are held in a relaxed atmosphere in the Keynoter Room of Howard Johnson ' s. Under the youthful guidance of Mr. Landry, the group has continued to be one of the school ' s most popular groups, and great things are expected in the future. Meetings are held in the Keynoter Room at Howard Johnson ' s. 92 The Key Club holds handicapped children ' s parties. Red Cross work at handicapped children ' s parties includes cooking lunch. KEY CLUB AND RED CROSS Each year a dedicated group of young girls perform many services for people in need. These Red Cross members with Key Club members run weekly parties for retarded children here in Wellesley. During the week and on weekends they also make trips to Medfield State Hospital, Cushing Hospital, a home for the aged, Massachusetts Hospital for Crippled Children in Canton, and Massachusetts General Hospital. The group ' s adviser is Miss Hickey, and the officers are Patty Scheppman, president and Kathy Fay, secretary. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Amparo Flores from Trujillo, Peru. Philippe Juvet from Fribourg, Switzerland. The American Field Service Club sponsors activities and sales which help support both the Wellesley students who go abroad and the foreign students who make their home in Wellesley for a year. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Levesque, adviser, and President Suzie Temple, Vice-President Sue Walker, Secretary Judy McGuire, and Treasurer Amy Wallace, the club has conducted such activities as the familiar tag days, Christmas card sales, an international supper, and this year for the first time the club sponsored a dance in con¬ junction with the Junior Classical League. The money from these projects has helped Linda Roberts, who spent last sum¬ mer in Malaysia, and is helping Judy McDermott, who is in Germany for the school year. It is also helping two foreign students who are spending a year in Wellesley: Amparo Flores from Peru, who is living with Sue Dailey; Philippe Juvet from Switzerland, who is living with Charlie Close. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA This year the Future Teachers Club continued the practice of giving its members the best look at the teaching profession by letting them engage in it themselves. Members are offered the opportunity of seeing an elementary grade teacher at work and also of actually taking part in this work. Through the co-operation of the administration and faculty of Kings¬ bury School, members of Future Teachers spend time taken from study halls in one of the elementary grade classrooms. The time is used for giving special help to children with read¬ ing difficulties, helping with class projects, reading to the class, correcting papers, and sometimes actually taking com¬ plete charge and presenting new material to the class. Some members of the club are unable to teach at Kings¬ bury, and for these students there are other activities, includ¬ ing guest lectures from elementary and secondary-grade- level teachers, and movies. Also this year there is a possibility of a trip to a local college in the spring. 95 Front Row: Peter Fortini, Bertrand Reif, Richard Bertelsen, Elizabeth Colburn, Jessica Edelman, Marilyn Wilton, Julie Low, Kathleen M. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY One of the many nationally-affiliated groups in the school is the National Honor Society. Each year approximately sixty new students are elected to the society on the basis of their character, service, leadership, and scholarship. This year ' s officers were Carl Heick, president; Jon Elion, vice-president; Kathy Sullivan, treasurer; and Phyllis Haffenreffer, secretary. Election to the Society entitles the student to free study halls, called Honor Study. The adviser is Miss Milot. Although there are no formal meetings, there are many special projects, the major yearly project being the support of a Greek foster child. Despina Kourti, for whom money is raised by holding brownie sales. The popularity of these sales is documented by the quick recognition by any student of the phrase Brownies for Despina. The decorations at the school-sponsored dances and some of the posters taped on the walls of the corridors are made by this organization. This year under the enthusiastic direction of Mr. Gow, the biggest task for club members was that of pro¬ moting all sports activities. The art service club is not for the purpose of learning art techniques and skills, but rather a means by which students who are interested in art can d o a service for our school. 102 Front Row: Sue Jones, Bonnie MacLeod, Whitney Cranshaw. In early December six members of the History Forum at¬ tended the Harvard-Radcliffe Model U.N., representing Laos and Columbia. The Laotians were in the thick of the debate on Vietnam and the perennial question of the admission of Red China. Among the innovations this year were regular weekly meetings and enrollment in the Junior World Affairs Council. The Forum was fortunate to have a dedicated set of officers with Kristin Neva, secretary; Jim Connolly, vice-presi¬ dent, performing much of the leg-work for Forum activities; and President Ed Bryant providing strong leadership for this year ' s club. In addition, Jessie Edelman should be mentioned for her enthusiasm and imagination in planning club activities. Members of the junior class run for town offices, but the entire student body is eligi¬ ble to vote. A poster and speech campaign is run for one memorable week. A short time after the election, the students hold office for a day. Having learned about the job that his department does for the town, each student writes an essay about his day in office, and the authors of the four best essays are awarded a four-day all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. during spring vacation. In addition to this, a prize is given for the most imaginative campaign poster. Last year ' s winners, Phil Santucci, Lucy Loscocco, Penny Pounder, and Andy Howard, were chaperoned on the trip by Mr. and Mrs. Burgess. The Youth-in-Government Day program has always been popular, and surely will be as successful in the future as it has been in the past. OPENING EXERCISES For the past several years, the opening exercises have been a meaningful part of the students ' daily routine. Each morning a student plays a musical selection and presents a reading for thought. This year ' s Opening Exercises Committee, under the helpful sponsorship of Mr. Fitzsimmons, has been able to fur¬ ther their effectiveness by the initiation of two new practices. With a liberalization of musical requirements, the student is able to choose from any field of music to enhance his reading for that day. This change has met with very favorable re¬ sponse from the student body. The other innovation has been the development of a weekly theme which can be more fully explored because of the extra time allotted to it. The themes are chosen by the students and are presented in any manner they desire. Front Row: Joan Stanuinas, Carola Topliffe, Jon Elion, Edward Bryant, Dede Snyder, James Luedke. One of Wellesley ' s newest clubs is the Bowling Club, formed by the growing number of enlightened people who prefer tenpin bowling to candlepin. Weekly competitions are orga¬ nized by President Dave Ripley and Adviser Mr. Hall, with a handicap system to equalize the competition each week. The winning team is determined by the total pinfall of its three members, each member bowling two games. Accurate records of each member ' s scores as well as the assignments of handi¬ caps are recorded each week by the secretary, Jim Hildreth. JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE The Junior Classical League under Mrs. Keenan and Presi¬ dent Richard O ' Connor has grown in depth and projects. Open to all students of Latin, with an enrollment this year of 88 members whose monthly meetings are held in Roman dress, the club has sponsored many events, among which were a dance with the AFS and a Christmas party. Saturnalia, at which 90 gifts were prepared for the New England Home for Little Wanderers. The League plans to send a representative to the National Convention in the near future. In the spring, members will participate in the State Convention. 109 Ill CHESS CLUB One of Wellesley High School ' s more amorphous activity groups is the Chess Club. Advised by Mr. Barr and headed by President Jon Elion, the club is composed of all chess players in the school who care to stop by Mr. Barr ' s room in the afternoon and wait for an opponent. There is no formal membership, and there are no formal meetings. Any interested person is welcome to drop in. Nearly every day a game can be found in progress, with players and groups of kibitzers eagerly contributing suggestions, moves, and comments. The Chess Club also spawns the Chess Team which competes with six other schools in the West Suburban League. The team is usually chosen from among Jon Elion, Peter Fortini, Bert Reif, Roger King, Harry Ray, Kent Schroeder, Jim Luedke, and Mike Dillencourt. Wellesley finished fourth last year, and at this time is 4-3-1 with part of the schedule still remaining. 112 Front Row: Jim Luedke, Jon Elion. The 67-68 Debating Team worked on the year ' s national debate topic Resolved: that Congress should establish uni¬ form regulations to control criminal investigation procedures. The intensive research and thought which went into the pre¬ paration of the topic was accomplished by all members of the team researching the subject as a group instead of as separate teams working independently. There was no attempt to plan debates with any interscholastic debating league. Practice debates were held, followed by debates with schools in ad¬ jacent communities. A small dedicated group of students worked very hard. Club members were Bill Manburg, Betsy Gardner, Tom Cunningham, Rob Collier, Mike Dillencourt, Tom Lucci, Joanne Ford, and Derval Walsh. With the domi¬ nance of underclassmen on the team, a strong nucleus for next year ' s success is assured. Front Row: Bill Manburg, Richard .Bertelsen, Tom Cunningham, Mike Dillencourt, Betsy Gordner. STYLUS The school ' s only rival publication to the Bradford is the Stylus. For only the second time, the Stylus presented two issues, each made up of a unique blending of student art¬ work and literary pieces. This year ' s staff was the largest ever and was responsible for the magazine ' s expansion. The two editors were Dede Snyder and Kristin Neva who were assisted by Mr. Joel Kabatznick, their adviser. New posters were de¬ signed and produced by Terry Rabinowitz and Ben Edmonds. Jessie Edelman and Carol Walsh helped greatly with the extra rating of papers, and finally, Agnes de Bethune must be mentioned for the work she did to produce the marvelous artwork of this year ' s Stylus. Stylus is coming was this year ' s slogan, and come it did amidst much favorable criticism. 114 BRADFORD In its twenty-fourth year of publication, the Bradford has tried this year to bring its focus closer to the student body than previously. In addition to the mere reporting of events, the Bradford also probed student feelings and opinions concern¬ ing the school and its problems. Run by a multitude of editors with the assistance of a few score reporters, typists, and photographers, the 1967-68 Bradford has been one of the most successful ever. Besides those working on the actual newspaper, a dedicated business and advertising staff ably handled the financial aspects of the Bradford. Publishing a paper is an involved process. First the editor- in-chief, Lucy Loscocco, decides on a publication date. Then Robin Bareli, as News Editor, scouts out and assigns all stories. Bob Benchley calls on Genevieve and the man behind the key¬ hole for their chronic masterpieces. By due date all stories are turned in corrected and nicely typed. This year ' s stalwart reporters included Tom Lucci, Derval Walsh, Tom Cunningham, Jim Connolly, Tom MoTgan, Lynn Griffiths, Bob Collier, and Ann Loscocco. When all the copy is ready, Layout Editor Kathy Sullivan designs the paper, and it is hustled off to press. Then it is released, and all the effort is forgotten by the reader, who fails to appreciate all the Bradford staff has done to give him his newspaper. Besides producing a paper, the Bradford will also partici¬ pate in the Patriot Ledger and Boston Globe Scholastic Semi¬ nars. At this deadline neither has been held, but the Bradford was a favorite for first or second honors in the Patriot Ledger Seminar. Besides those already mentioned, others working on the Bradford with Mrs. Cottle, adviser, were Phyllis Haffenreffer, Typing Editor; Dwight Sargent and Nancy Brown, Sports Editors; John Wolf, Business Manager; Christine Young, Ad¬ vertising Manager; Carol Morton, Co-ordinating Editor; Fred Schaller, Photography Editor; Maria Sciacca, Exchange Man- ager ; Dave Hanks, Associate Editor, Jim Zepp, Special Proj¬ ects; and Ed Bryant, Managing Editor. This year, more than ever, the science club has worked to bring science to the level on which it can be enjoyed by all, and at the same time educationally rewarding to all. A wide variety of field trips and lecturers have been featured, rang¬ ing from talks on UFO ' s and lasers to a field trip to the Massa¬ chusetts General Hospital. This year the officers have been Jon Elion, president; Dave Stanwood, vice-president; Kathy Rogers, secretary. During informal meetings, activities of the individual members as well as group action have been dis¬ cussed. This year the club has been fortunate in being able to obtain a large number of nationally renowned films on science for viewing by the members. SCIENCE CLUB AND RADIO CLUB Mr. Lydon erects the new radio antenna. The Radio Club under the supervision of Mr. Lydon and the leadership of Nat Tetrick president, continued into its third successful year attracting new faces into the ranks of ama¬ teur radio. Its members met weekly on Thursday afternoon in Room 120 to increase their knowledge of electronic theory, to practice the Morse code, and to discuss innovations in ham radio. Its station, WA1 DUL, established contacts in states as far west as Idaho and Colorado. In addition, contacts were made with hams in such foreign countries as Poland, England, Germany, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. Now with the new vertical antenna installed on the roof of the wing, club members hope they can establish contacts with more distant stations. John Allen and Nathaniel Tetrick send a message. Composed of Senior Class officers and senior homeroom representatives, the Senior Council, sponsored by Miss Mulry, is designed to manage and direct the class activities. With the guidance of the Council, the Senior Class conducts its money¬ raising ventures to support the senior activities. Even beyond the problems of the class alone, the Council is responsible for the promotion of spirit throughout the entire school. The senior play Hay Fever and a candy Mint Truffle sale, guided by the Council, have helped to earn the money for the final senior activities. This year ' s Council is specifically noted for having called the first complete class meeting attended by the entire class. Also, the usual fee for caps and gowns was not collected to alleviate some of the financial problems of seniors. With these changes, the Council hopes that it has become a more representative and integral part of the senior class. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club is probably the school ' s most talent-laden organization, and this year has been an extremely busy club. Early in the year the members presented an excellent Ca¬ nadian film, Nobody Waved Goodbye , which was very well attended by the student body. In the winter, the club put on the Senior Play Hayfever by Noel Coward under the direction of the adviser, Mr. Fitzsimmons. In April, members performed the modern version of Antigone by Jean Anouilh. The officers, Franchi Elms, Dede Snyder, Bill Squire, and Marty de Bethune also organized a trip in May to Stratford, Con¬ necticut, to see a professional production of Shakespeare ' s Othello , a dramatic conclusion to a memorable dramatic year. School ' s out, for good. Someday has finally come. The great intellectual excitement and freedom of college is all that lies ahead before you find your niche in the world. Busy work to be replaced by meaningful research and thought. For some maybe college isn ' t even in the picture. A job. Maybe just a living -- but on your own. Halleluiah! For some it will work out. For others it may not. For many, graduation is a time of anxiety rather than relief. That day” has finally come. No more hiding behind daily quizzes. Your bluffs been called. What do you have, aces or deuces? Or something in between? High school was a breeze compared to this. Can ' t I just forget it? Yes, you ' re on your own , all right. Halleluiah? If you still think so, maybe high school did something for you. It depends. What did you do for yourself? 200 Printed by BRADBURY, SAYLES, O ' NEILL-PARAGON
