Lundgren. As a teacher he had studied widely and was respected by all for his knowledge and his ability to impart that knowledge to others. He held a bachelor ' s degree from Boston University and M.A. degrees from both Harvard University and Bowdoin Col¬ lege. Before coming to Wellesley, he taught at St. Johnsbury Academy, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and in New London, Connecticut. For nineteen years Mr. Lundgren had been a member of our Mathematics Department. Recently, he had lectured in mathematics at the Boston University Division of Continuing Education. As an advisor, Mr. Lundgren spent many hours working with the business staff of the We es eyan and as adviser to the Wellesley Chapter of the National Honor Society. Past yearbook staffs recall with gratitude the time Mr. Lundgren spent devoting spe¬ cial care to the financial aspects of the Wellesleyan. Manifesting a personal interest in each student, Mr. Lundgren was never too busy to give extra help. No question was con¬ sidered too trivial to be answered. He knew when a touch of humor was most needed and was always able to put his classes at ease. It is with both sorrow and pride that we dedicate the 1967 We es eyan to Mr. Lund¬ gren. 1 9 write i B w« ■■■ EDITOR’S MESSAGE We have completed a year of public education. There is no restriction to our reactions to it. Yet we cannot credit our¬ selves with the achievement of this freedom. Mr. Chaffee and the School Committee have provided ideal conditions, modern facilities, an excellent faculty, and an educational policy flexible enough for experimentation. Mr. Graves, Mr. Kamitian, and Mr. D ' Aniello by choosing to regard us as responsible citizens of the school community encourage both responsible action and instructive re¬ action. Providing us with the alternatives for intelligent decisions, our guidance coun¬ selors have been thinking of our choices, now that we are leaving Wellesley High School. We have spent six fifty-minute per¬ iods a day in classes. The teachers who have led them have encouraged us, sometimes compelled us, sometimes humored us to react to the books, the ideas, the people who make up a school. Whatever expression is recorded on the pages of this book ex¬ tends beyond the people whose faces are pictured. 16 FACULTY 17 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1967: The time has finally arrived when you bid good-bye to your high school years, and it is my sincere hope that during these years we have helped you to lay a firm foundation on which to build a most successful and productive life. The future holds much in store for each one of you. The responsibilities that you now face will continue to in¬ crease, and how well you meet them depends upon how well your home, your school, and your community have met theirs in nurturing you. Remember always that your parents, teachers, and friends sincerely trust that you succeed in fulfilling the am¬ bitions you now hold and that you will be able to fulfill all the require¬ ments of a well-spent life. The 1967 Red Raider Football Team will be remembered for its tremendous spirit, its Spartan-like discipline, and its fine physically-conditioned players. In many trying situations the Raiders displayed the type of character which made Wellesley justifiably proud. Starting the season with a win over favored Braintree, the team then faced a powerful Norwood eleven. The Raid¬ ers came from behind twice to upset Norwood 16-15. The third game proved to be equally exciting as the team scored another come-from-behind win over Framingham North to put them in first place in Bay State League competition. At this point in the season, the dreams of the squad were dimmed with injuries to defensive halfback Dick Coughlin and fullback Co-captain Curt Rawley. Fate frowned on Wellesley as the Raiders faced Milton, Natick, and Needham in their final games. Wellesley ' s line was weakened by the loss of George Handy, 210-pound center, and Bill Mastro 200-pound tackle. The team, led by excellent coaches and fine co-captains, was able to triumph over Dedham in an all-out effort. However, before the final game of the season, another injury, this time to tackle Cliff Hankin, stalled a Wellesley comeback. The team finished with a respectable 4-5 season in a strong Bay State League, tied for fifth place. Wellesley ' s offensive unit was paced by a powerful line led by tackle and Co-captain Renso Perdoni. Two fine ends. Butch Sinko and Paul Nahass, accounted for many Raider gains. Tackles Bill Mastro, Cliff Hankin, and Co-captain Renso Perdoni, did most of the heavy work in the line, while guards Rob Spears and Jim Mclsaac were excellent at their positions. Center George Handy, one of the better lines¬ men in the League, held his position well, and junior Phil Santucci had to fill a vital spot when he replaced the in¬ jured Handy. Quarterback Steve Glorioso led the Wellesley backfield, composed of halfbacks Rich Newhall, Jay Lubker, and Andy Howard, along with fullback Curt Rawley, the team ' s highest scorer with 50 points. When Wellesley was hit with its injuries, many capable boys had to fill important positions. These boys were the ones who went out to practice every day and served as blocking machines for the battering rams of the first string. This year these blocking machines turned out to be an excellent group of athletes: seniors Bob Lederhos, Tom Connolly, Mike McFadden, Chris Johnson, Tom Houde, Albert Barbieri, Jason Stewart; juniors Bob Saveland, John Clough, George Colder, Bob Quatrale, Buck Sullivan, Mike Hart, Larry Frasch, Tom Maples, John Napoleone, George Burr, George Medford; and sophomores Bob Rupp, Tom De Munbrun, Steve Colby, and Dave Johnson. Typical of the outstanding spirit of the 1966 Red Raiders was that of Johnny Burr and Ted Papps, who through tech¬ nicalities and injuries were unable to participate as players but remained with the team to ably assist the managers Richard O ' Connors and Paul Coleman and Mr. Hines, our trainer, to whom we owe a great deal of gratitude for his interest in us. Because of the very fine coaching of Mr. Kerivan and Mr. McDermott, the able leadership of co-captains Renso Perdoni and Curt Rawley, and the undying spirit of all of the players on the squad, the 1967 Red Raiders can be proud of a wonderful year of football. 48 51 FIELD HOCKEY The Field Hockey Team had another out¬ standing season. Inspired by their spirited coach. Miss Brown, the team lost only to power¬ ful Weston and finished second in the League. Co-captains Roxanne Marshall and Muffy Horack led the team to an admirable record of five wins, five ties, and one loss. Many games were won because of the skill of seniors Hoagy Ladd and Roxanne Marshall, and junior Jane Fumia. Carol Stuart, a junior, was a mag¬ nificent goalie, responsible in large part for the opponents ' failure to score more than eight goals. Next year ' s team promises to be a great one, as the Junior Varsity this year had ten wins and one tie. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country Team finished the regular season with an 8-1 record, suffering their only defeat to a strong Braintree team. Doing con¬ sistently well for the Raiders was junior Craw¬ ford Lindsey, who broke four course records. Crawf finished first in every meet in the reg¬ ular season except the first meet against Mil- ton, in which he placed second. Another re¬ liably good runner was senior John Patterson. Ned McFadden, Phil Walsh, Dick Sawicki, Dave Perry, Mike Devlin, and Russ Wiggin also ran very well this year. In the Conference meet, Wellesley placed second, with Lindsey taking second place. Although not placing too high in the State Meet, it must be noted that this is the toughest competition of the year. Welles¬ ley had an excellent season this year, and is looking forward to a shot at the championship next year, with Crawford Lindsey, Phil Walsh, Ned McFadden, and Dave Perry returning. SOCCER The Soccer Team, led by Co-captains Russ Colby and John Marchetti, ended with a very respectable 5-5-3 record in the tough Bay State League. The second half of the season was highlighted by wins over Framingham South, Walpole, and Norwood. Wellesley battled to a tie against Framingham North and lost to Milton, Needham, and Braintree. How¬ ever, Braintree is perennially at the top of the League, and Needham this year was unusually strong. Individuals who were outstanding in their performance and displayed team spirit throughout the season were Russ Colby, Jeff Sexton, and Jim Idell. Others who played well were Ralph Bulger, Ray Scanned, and Dick Peterson. FRONT ROW: Martha Blaney, Beth Dykhuizen, Judy McGuire, Mary Lou Sullivan, Sally Wyman. SECOND ROW: Mr. Scannell, Scott Tillson, Tom Villa, Jeff Sexton, Bill Mutrie, Bob Wickham, Mr. Hines. HOCKEY TEAM This year ' s hockey team is one of the three Bay State League teams still able to qualify for the State Tournament. Losing only to Norwood twice, Needham, and Dedham, they gained upset victories over Walpole twice and Framingham South. Injuries have been costly as Ray Scan¬ nell suffered a leg injury, defenseman Rich Howard a broken arm, and George Colder, a kidney injury. The two Walpole games were the most exciting, as this is the first time in over a decade that Wellesley has defeated Walpole twice. Both games were tight right to the end with Bill Guild scoring twice in the first 3-2 victory and Co- Captain Bill Munroe scoring the other. Munroe scored both of the goals in the 2-1 second meeting. One of Wellesley ' s most outstanding players was John Marchetti whose slap shot often threatened opposing goalies and whose de¬ fensive plays were instrumental in every win. Co-captains Larry Mathews and Bill Munroe, the league ' s leading scorer, and seniors Rich Howard, Ray Scannell, Jeff Sex¬ ton, John Marchetti, and Scott Tillson, composed the back¬ bone of the team, with junior goalie John Smolens saving the team uncounted times. Bob Wickham, Bill Guild, Bill Mutrie, and Jack Horack were the other juniors who will be back to continue Wellesley ' s fine ' 67 record. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM The Girls ' Varsity Basketball Team shared top honors for first place in Bay State League competition with Brain¬ tree. Coached by Miss Brown, the Varsity finished with an excellent 7-1 record. The only loss of the season came in a hard-fought game against Braintree. The J.V. ' s finished the season by compiling an outstanding 10-0 slate. For the powerful Varsity team, the outstanding defense was led by Co-captain Muff Horack and Junior Doreen Donahue, while the equally effective offensive unit was led by Co-captain Kay Pawlina and Senior Hoagy Ladd. Looking forward to a strong season next year and the acquisition of another League title are Juniors: Anne Scan¬ nell, Pat Nahass, Linda Roberts, Carol Stuart, Doreen Don¬ ahue and Sophomores Jane Crook and Pirn Ramsay. Led by co-captains Pam Bradley, sophomore, and Ellen Minster, junior, the J.V. ' s were one of the finest teams ever to play for Wellesley High School. The girls tallied a spotless record with no losses for the entire season. Many of these fine J.V. players will be competing for positions on the Varsity that have been left vacant by our graduating stars. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM — FRONT ROW: Linda Roberts, Anne Scannell, Carol Stuart, Sue Pawlina, Pam Ramsay. SECOND ROW: Hoagy Ladd, Dorrie Donohue, Muffy Horack, Kay Pawlina, Paula Mackin, Pat Nahass, Miss Brown. 66 WRESTLING TEAM - FRONT ROW: Dick Noonan, Don Bustin, Fred Cutheon, Bob White, Dave Hubbell, Stan Burns, Bruce Johansen. SECOND ROW: Bruce Kazowka, Robert Hamilton, Craig Molinlaux, Jim Guzelian, Bill Low, Doug Chapman. THIRD ROW: Coach Campana, Dave Howard, Bill Mastro, Renzo Perdonl, John Paltrineri, Bob Ferguson, Coach Pandolf. BOYS ' BASKETBALL TEAM Mr. Bergstrom produced another winning basketball team despite a low pre-season rating. The Wellesley Red Raiders combined hard work and strong determination to bring about the biggest upset of the season. A strong un¬ defeated Milton team was handed its first loss by our te¬ nacious defense and hustling offense. In that game Rip Lanpher scored 44 points, the highest achieved by any Wellesley player in recent years. Rip is the leading scorer of the Bay State League Conference with a 23-point average and is among the top contenders in the rebound department. In the back court Steve Glorioso and Craw¬ ford Lindsey worked well all season to unify the Wellesley attack. The great improvement of juniors Bob Saveland, Rick Weaver, and Dave Duncan has earned them a posi¬ tion in the top five. Wellesley ' s strong bench was sup¬ ported by Ralph Bulger, Shorty Leonard, and Paul Nahass. The bench did a remarkable job of filling in for our in¬ jured starters. WRESTLING TEAM Wellesley ' s Wrestling Team has again taken a prominent position in district and Bay State League competition. Win¬ ning all but one of its league dual meets, Wellesley tied with arch-rivals Needham for the league championship. Inspired by the excellent coaching and instruction of Mr. Campana and led on the mats by Co-Captains John Pal¬ trineri and Renso Perdoni, Wellesley also tied with Need¬ ham for the team championship trophy at the district tour¬ nament where John Paltrineri took a first place. Renso Perdoni, Dick Noonan, and Joe Clement took second places, Fred Cutcheon, Bill Low, and Jim Guzelian, third places and a fourth place, Bruce Kazowka, a fourth place in tough competition. Wellesley sent eight wrestlers to the State Meet. Staunch service was also rendered by Bob White, Dave Hubbell, Doug Chapman, Bill Mastro, Lreoy Anderson, and Paul MacDonald covering most of the weight classes. BOYS ' BASKETBALL TEAM — FRONT ROW: Wayne Coddington, Paul Nahass, Steve Glorioso, Rip Lanpher, Crawford Lindsey, Doug Ruston. SECOND ROW: Mr. Bergstrom, Bob Saveland, Rich Leonard, Steve Dalton, Dave Duncan, Rick Weaver, Ralph Bulger, Jeff Nichols, Ted Dale. 67 The Boys ' Swimming Team continued its fine record, finishing the season with nine wins, two losses. It was Jeff Greene ' s first year as coach, and he fashioned an ex¬ cellent squad of swimmers. Wellesley ' s lineup featured John Patter¬ son and Bob Brew in the freestyle sprints while Bob Diffenderfer and Marty Wolfe swam the endurance events. Scott McIntosh and Hank Tyler were outstanding in the breaststroke, sophomore John O ' Connor led in the backstroke, and Bill Bates and Bill Larsen performed well in the difficult but¬ terfly stroke. Fritz Olcott and Nelson Davis were consistent winners in the diving. At season ' s end, the team looked to be a major contender in both the Eastern Massachusetts and State Meets. Since its inception four years ago, the Girls ' Swimming Team has made great progress. This year was particularly success¬ ful as the girls captured first place trophies in both the League and the Championship meets. Coached by Mrs. Catinella, the team practiced two nights a week. Co-captains Susan Palmer and Lois Turnau with mana¬ gers Judy Reid and Martha de Bethune have worked to organize and perfect the team. Outstanding swimmers this year were Sue Anderson, Judy Bennett, Linda Davin, Cathie Hegarty, Cindy Johnston, Charlotte Jones, Martha Ewing, Lynda Havlin, and Lois Turnau. Carol Cook and Renee Moore were outstanding divers. GIRLS ' SWIMMING TEAM FRONT ROW: Sue Akerson, Roberta Ferioli, Chris Palmer, Nancy Gillen, Jill Martinez, Carol Cook, Jody Cunniff. SECOND ROW: Bridget Goodwin, Lee Dusenberry, Leslie Matthias, Judy Schirmer, Louise Sloan, Karen Epifano. THIRD ROW: Miss Sawicki, Jane Abbott, Monica Holland, Debbie Butts, Jane Fumia, Sue Burke, Julie Davis. GIRLS ' GYMNASTICS TEAM The girls ' gymnastics team under the guidance of Miss Sedwick has had a very successful season. Co-captained by Linny Holman and Nancy Spillman, the team had achieved a 6-1 record by mid-February. Outstanding senior performers have been Ruth Butts and Judy Schirmer on the bal¬ ance beam, Nancy Spilman on the uneven bars, Ruth Butts in vaulting, and Linny Hol¬ man in free exercise. Prospects for next year look bright with such proven perform¬ ers as Cathy Szent-Gyorgi, Lee Dusenbury, and Jan McLaughlin on the unevens, Kate Jewett in vaulting, and Jane Fumia in the tumbling events. SKI TEAM — FRONT ROW: Betsy Gardner, Alison Knowles, Dwight Sargeant, Cindy Wright, Russ Colby, Alison Ferris, Hatsy Hoffman. SECOND ROW: Judy Waite, Linda Clevernen, Rox¬ anne Marshall, Becky Patterson, Sally Wyman, Nancy Gardner. THIRD ROW: Joe Murray, Scott Powell, Brad Boyd, Bob Tibor, Charles Cogbill, Glen Armbrewster, Richard Butze. GYM TEAM — FRONT ROW: Bob Rupp, George Medford, Lincoln Clapp. Jim Peary, Gary Schirmer, Ted Popps, Alan Stone. SECOND ROW: Rich Newhall, Tom Moor, Tim Beck, Byron Brown, Tom Roys, Doug Gunwaldsen, Bob Greenwalt, Russ Wlggin, Jim Rowan, Frank Emerson, Phil Elmassian, Ed Boyd, Ray Wheel. SKI CLUB AND SKI TEAM Organizing ski trips into snow country is the role of the Ski Club under the direction of Mr. Lorett and Bob Tibor. The Ski Team had a very active season scheduled but because of the fact that January was a spring month, many events were unable to be held. The weekly meets of the Massachusetts Bay Ski League were the major activity. The events alternated be¬ tween slalom and cross-country each week. The boys ' team placed second and third in most of the races. Star runners were Dwight Sargent, captain; Scott Powell, Russ Colby, captain; Steve Colby, and Bebo Boyd. The girls won second place in the league with help from up-and-coming Penny Pitous: Cindy Wright, captain; Judy Waite, Alison Ferris, captain; Sally Wyman, Roxanne Marshall, Hatsie Hoffman, and Betsy Gardner. Next year ' s team has good pos¬ sibilities with the return of several promising un¬ derclassmen and snow. BOYS ' GYMNASTICS TEAM The Wellesley High Gym Team, coached by Mr. St. Cyr and under the leadership of Captains Rich Newhall and Rusty Wiggin, finished the year with a season ' s record of 5 wins and 4 losses. The team managed to remain a threat to the top teams in the league. Losing top meets to Braintree and Newton by three and four points, the team, although young and inexperienced, averaged the excellent score of 110 points per meet. Seniors who contributed much talent to the team were Rusty Wiggin in high bar, side horse, and parallel bars; Ray Wheet in still rings, parallel bars, and long horse; and Rich Newhall in floor exer¬ cises, high bar, and tumbling. Junior standouts were Allen Stone, George Medford, Ted Papps, Lincoln Clapp, Mike Hart, and Jim Peary. Looking forward to a big turnout next year, along with the help of talented sophomores Gary Schirmer, Jim Rowan, Tom Roys, and Tim Beck. Coach St. Cyr feels confi¬ dent of a more successful season for 1968. 73 75 Ill L? GOLF TEAM—Scott Tillson, Dan Arcand, Bruce Bellmare, Bill Munroe 83 BASEBALL FRONT ROW: Bob Brown, John Marchetti, Ray Scannell, Rip Lanpher, Steve Glorloso. SECOND ROW: Mr. Kerlvan, Rich Forbecker, Ralph Bulger, Richard Leonard, Steve Bruns, MANAGER. GOLF The Red Raider Golf Team drove hard last spring from tee to hole. Under the iron hand of Coach Burgess, the team pocketed seven wins and two losses, to land third place in the Bay State League. Seniors Bill Nugent, CAPTAIN, Bob Szetella, Peter Martin, and juniors Bill Munroe, Scott Tillson, and Bruce Bellmare proved to be ominous competition for our caddy opponents. Three especially competent team members, Bill Nu¬ gent, Bob Szetella, and Bill Munroe, played in the State Individual Cham¬ pionships. Bill Munroe, head of the club this year, hopes to lead the team through another victorious season on the green. SPRING TRACK In recent years the Wellesley High Track Team has achieved outstand¬ ing success. Last spring the Cindermen raced to an undefeated season, capturing the Bay State League Championship, and won the Conference Meet by 25 points over the nearest team. Coach St. Cyr will mold this year ' s team from proven performers of last year ' s squad. With sprinters Dick Peterson and Eric Sheldon, hurdler Andy Howard, and distance run¬ ners John Patterson and Crawford Lindsey, the team should do well on the track. Featured in the field events will be jumpers Steve Sinko and Al Barbieri, Curt Rawley and Renso Perdoni in the shot put, and throwers Bill Mastro and George Handy. More home track meets this spring should draw more spectators and encourage the team. FIRST ROW: Sally Wyman, Kim Koops, Shirley Mansfield, Martha Chandler. SECOND ROW: Jenney Kite, Phyllis Haffenreffer, Carol Schradieck, Betsy Gardner, Jan Garner. THIRD ROW: Ellen Muzzy, Marianne Varney, Debby Laurie, Nancy Brown, Sue Ringer, Pat Menor. The baseball team batted out a good season last spring in spite of unusually bad weather for such a classically pleasant time af year. The leading men on the team were Tim Adams, pitcher; Peter Ciesluk, centerfield; Ed Doherty, third base; Steve Bachman, pitcher; and Dudley Cliff, short stop. Tim Adams ' talent lies not only in hurling the ball into the batter ' s box but also in really slamming it out in the box, too, as seen by his high 354 batting average. Pete Ciesluk is an all-around star player in center- field and behind the bat with a 275 average. The team as a whole brought home 8 wins, 10 losses in League games, 2 wins, no losses in Non-league games for a record of 10 wins, 10 losses for the season. The incoming team appears to be able to run away with a more successful season. High¬ lighted players will be pitchers Robert Brown and Shorty Leonard, catcher Steve Glorioso, first-baseman Rip Lanpher, second-baseman Ray Scannell, short-stop Rich Forbecker, and out¬ fielders John Marchetti and Ralph Bulger. GIRLS ' TENNIS The tremendous tennis team of last spring stroked their way to a fabulous 6-2 season. Captain Vicky Woods leaped over the net many a time after a smashing game to console the loser. Other fleet-footed players such as senior Cheryl Johnson, sophomores Jan Garner, Phyllis Haffenreffer, and junior Marianne Varney also racked up the points. Such a team deserves a winning season in 1967. BOYS ' TENNIS In keeping with tradition, the 1966 tennis team rallied their way to another winning season last spring. It was a year of closely fought matches ending in an overall victory for the Red Raiders. They defeated Needham to win the Bay State League Championship by a score of 12 wins 2 losses to Needham ' s 11 wins, 3 losses. The prospects for this season ' s smashing good team look promising. Led by the hard¬ hitting captain, Russ Wiggin, the strong backers will be Chip Staley, Dwight Sargent, Bill Guild, and George Burr. LACROSSE The great performance of last year ' s lacrosse team points to an outstanding season to come. Last year it was a combination of the sensa¬ tional skills of Karen Larsen, Donna McCabe, Hoagy Ladd, Kay Pawlina, and Karen Dort which led the team through the winning season, cradling three wins, one loss, and three ties. Trisha McGuire and Karen Larsen as co-captains upheld the fighting spirit of the team which was especially evident in the thrilling Weston game. With lively Coach Brown running the team hard, the girls scored a record of seventeen goals in one game. The return of Hoagy Ladd, Carol Stuart, Muffy Horack, and other highly co-ordi¬ nated players makes it very possible that this year ' s team will have another extremely success¬ ful season. 84 Chip Staley, George Burr, Mr. Andrew, Billy Guild, Dwight Sargent, Russ Wiggin. Members have worked hard supporting traditional school activities and initiating new ones. T he Kick- Off Dance, the Homecoming Dance, the Student Activity Package, and the Season Ticket Drive were all successful. We were especially proud of the support of the Morgan Memorial Drive. New this year was the WBZ Seven-Hundred Fund Drive which gained state-wide recognition for the Coun¬ cil. This year the Student Council faces one of the greatest and most difficult tasks in its history. In May, the Council will host the annual convention of the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. Plans also have been made for the Gym Show and the Variety Show and Beauty Pageant. Much credit for the success of this year ' s Student Council goes to President Alan Ger- lach, to Miss Lorden for her dedicated guid¬ ance, and to the enitre administration for their liberal co-operation throughout the year. AMERICAN JUNIOR RED CROSS CLUB KEY CLUB This year the girls of the Red Cross Club had a new and different opportunity to serve others. For the first time the members went to the Massachusetts Hospital for Crip¬ pled Children to play with the children and get them ready for dinner. Under the spon¬ sorship of Miss Hickey and student leader¬ ship of President Ellen Hughes and Secretary Nancy Kerivan, the members joined with the Key Club to conduct parties for re¬ tarded children at Perrin School. These par¬ ties succeeded in bringing excitement. The girls not only helped the younger genera¬ tion, but also visited the elderly at Cushing Hospital on Sundays to brighten the lives of its elderly patients. The Red Cross Club also visited the Medfield State Hospital and co¬ operated with the Key Club to hold a Christ¬ mas party at the Settlement House in Bos¬ ton. Because of the various projects of the club, the following chairmen were elected to supervise them: Betsy Giese, Muffy Hor- ack, Jean Noonan, and Paula Mackin. Once again the Key Club has experienced an active year. Under the guidance of Mr. Landry, adviser, and Rich Newhall, Dick Noonan, Chris Gorgone, Steve Glorioso, and Paul Nahass its 43 members continued successfully to run the concession at home football games, sponsor retarded children ' s parties in co-operation with the Red Cross, and visit various settlement houses in the Boston area. The Key Club meets each Mon¬ day night to discuss its business and to hear guest speakers on a wide variety of subjects. Each week two members of the Key Club attend the Kiwanis Club luncheon in order to observe the meeting and to better co-ordinate the two clubs. As a new project this year the Key Club undertook the broadcasting of all home basketball games. With more activities planned for the future, the Key Club looks forward with anticipation to next year ' s projects. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE CLUB Wellesley High School students have a unique op¬ portunity of meeting and exchanging ideas with students from other lands by means of the American Field Service Club. This year the club has been un¬ der the guidance of Mrs. Levesque and has been led by officers Sue Light, PRESIDENT; Gretchen Scholten, VICE-PRESIDENT; Sara Frost, SECRETARY; and Pixie Cruikshank, TREASURER. Early in the fall, the club sponsored a Get-To¬ gether Afternoon for an informal gathering of Well¬ esley High School students with the A.F.S. foreign students. This year the club welcomed Klas Gierow of Sweden and Marit Johnsrud of Norway. To com¬ plete the student exchange, Blake Allison, a Welles¬ ley High School student, spent his senior year in Norway. A.F.S. Tag Days are held in the spring and fall to help support our A.F.S. students. With its meetings and activities, the A.F.S. Club makes pos¬ sible many wonderful experiences with students from many parts of the world. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY This year the Wellesley High School chapter of the National Honor Society held its induction cere- money on December 14. Its 20 juniors and 60 seniors are elected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Officers are Jon Goldweitz, PRESIDENT; Bill Low, VICE-PRESIDENT; Kathy Krall, SECRETARY; and Phyllis Havens, TREASURER. The members of the society are given the priv¬ ilege of Honor Study, an institution which allows the students the use of an unproctored study hall. This year saw the innovation of early dismissal for mem¬ bers with last period studies. As in previous years the society assumed the re¬ sponsibility of supporting a Greek foster child, Des¬ pina Kourti. In addition to the traditional brownie sales to raise money for this project, a very successful license-plate change day was held on December 31. 95 DRAMA CLUB — FRONT ROW: Christine Neva, Sue Ringer, Elizabeth Gordner, Carollo Toplifle, Jomes Zepp, TREA¬ SURER; Bill Stanwood, PRESIDENT; Jon Boker, VICE-PRESI-DENT; Jeon Martorelli, SECRETARY; Deidre Snyder, Robin Borell, Beth McDermott, Judy McDermott. This year the club has put some of its discussions into print with the publication of a maga¬ zine. Under the direction of Mr. McGoff, the Art Service Club has made posters announc¬ ing elections, gym meets, and dances. The Opening Exercises Committee, under the capable leadership of Miss Teed, pre¬ sents daily musical selections and inspira¬ tional readings for personal reflection. Stu¬ dents from all classes were encouraged to take part in these programs. The purpose of the club is simple, bowling for those interested in getting to¬ gether for a little competition and a lot of fun. Each year the club consists of 7 to 10 teams of three bowlers each. At the close of the ten-week season, the victorious team joins those bowlers having the highest single and triple-game totals in receiving a trophy. Led by Peter Stulce and Mr. Hall, the team enjoyed a good season. JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE Under the direction of Mrs. Keenan and President Margaret Hansberry, the Junior Classical League is an organization dedi¬ cated to the preservation of classical ideals. Its exclusive membership is open only to students with a solid classical background. Monthly meetings held in dress togas serve to introduce to Wellesley High School stu¬ dents such institutions as chariot races and Roman dinners. Each year a larger and more enthusiastic group of plebeians brings encouragement to its supporters. IT ' S ACADEMIC TEAM The It ' s Academic Television Quiz Show Team, composed of Alan Gerlach, Bill Low, and Paul Segel, represents Wellesley High on the television quiz show, It ' s Academic, broadcast weekly by WHDH-TV in Boston. Questions on the show cover a wide variety of subjects including anything and every¬ thing from sports to French cuisine along with more conventional subjects such as science, history, literature, and math. Wellesley ' s team has had remarkable success so far, being undefeated in three matches and now preparing to enter the championship match in the spring. The team ' s score of 570 points in its quarter¬ final match has yet to be approached by another team. Although the team lacks a formal ad¬ viser, the special concern of Mr. Graves and Mr. D ' Aniello has done much to make it a working organization capable of competi¬ tion. DEBATING TEAM The school year 1966-1967 witnessed the demise of the Bay State Debating League in which Wellesley had participated the pre¬ vious year. Undaunted, team co-captains Alan Gerlach and Peter Sorlien, under the able guidance of Mr. Shepard, arranged de¬ bates with Natick, Wakefield, Brookline, Newton, and other suburban high schools. Before contending with opponents from other schools, the debating team members participated in practice debates on the re¬ solution that the foreign aid program of the United States be limited to non-military assistance. Especially active were under¬ classmen Betsy Gardner, Bill Manburg, Richard Bertelsen, Richard Trageser, Tom Lucci, and Jim Connolly, along with senior Bruce Dale. CHESS TEAM Late into the afternoon the Chess Team members may be found on opposite sides of the chessboards under the supervision of Mr. Barr. Although several matches have been held with teams from near-by high schools, the members spend most of their competition time vying for the first-board position. Lee Hansen, Jon Elion, Peter Fortini, and Jim Luedke may often be found long after the school day has ended still match¬ ing wits in this game of kings. 103 104 STYLUS — FRONT ROW: Ann Gael Hewson, Marilyn Coffey, Linda Saleski, Agnes de Bethune. FOURTH ROW: Ed Bryant, Tom Lucci, Ben Edmonds, Vincent Liff, Richard Bertelsen. THE STYLUS This year ' s Stylus was the best the high school has ever seen. With the whole stu¬ dent body contributing, Senior Editor Deb¬ ora Salem, Junior Editor Dede Snyder, Art Editor Ben Edmonds, and Treasurer Ed Bry¬ ant had to formulate a new and improved way of rating the articles submitted. The combination of this co-ordinated staff and adviser Mr. Kabatznick proved so dynamic that the Stylus burst forth with a second issue this year. THE BRADFORD Wellesley High School ' s illustrious news¬ paper, The Bradford, is published eight times yearly under the supervision of Mrs. Cottle. At the head of the editor ' s list are Editor-in-Chief Don Trageser, Managing Ed¬ itor Meg Clement, News Editor Martha Min¬ ster, Feature Editor Kathy Krall, Associate Editor Jon Baker, Boy ' s Sports Editor Steve Dalton, Girls ' Sports Editor Jean Noonan, Business Editor Randy Drewrey, and Adver¬ tising Editor Carol Manning. Among the innovations of this year ' s Bradford are the lengthened issue, the Brad¬ ford office, and a subsidiary History Forum magazine. The Bradford continues to rep¬ resent and seek out student interests and concerns and to publish them in an en¬ joyable, informative publication. WISEWELL SCIENCE CLUB RADIO CLUB Under its new adviser, Mr. Vasaturo, the Wisewell Science Club has continued to arouse interest among scientifically-minded students. President Wendy Fearnside, Vice- President Jon Elion, Secretary Paula Bor- dewieck, and Treasurer Charles Cogbill have led the club to such places of scientific interest as the Mass. General Hospital for open heart surgery, the Watertown reactor, and the Wellesley College Observatory. The annual Science Fair under the direction of the Student Science Fair Director was held on March 9. Because of the interest shown for lectures such as that on the subject of holography, laser photography, the club hopes to bring more science speakers to Wellesley High School. The Radio Club under the supervision of Mr. Lydon and leadership of John Allen completed its second electrifying and suc- cesfsul year. Their station WA1DUL has spread the voice of Wellesley High to as far away as Canada, Mississippi, and Flo¬ rida. One of the club ' s major objectives is to contact all of the fifty states. In an effort to spread enthusiasm through neighboring schools, the club has started routine com¬ munications in the area. Spang, Director of Guid¬ ance, came to Wellesley High School from Brockton High School in 1945. His first as¬ signment included the teaching of science and the counseling of boys. Later he be¬ came a full-time counselor, and in 1957 he was appointed first Director of Guidance for Wellesley High School. For many years Mr. Spang was the advisor for senior classes, and he was also the Director of the Welles¬ ley Summer School. Serving on many local and state committees, he has been a pioneer in the field of guidance. His foresight and his interest in young people influenced the planning of our pres¬ ent guidance services and suite which are among the finest in our area. Because he has given generously of his time and talents in serving Wellesley students, he will be greatly missed after his retirement in June. With deep respect and affection the mem¬ bers of the senior class wish him happiness and success in his new ventures. 138 SENIORS 139 SENIOR OFFICERS SENIOR COUNCIL Deborah McNeil, SECRETARY Jeffrey Sexton, TREASURER SENIOR COUNCIL - FRONT ROW: Jeff Sexton, Steve Sinko, Miss Mulry, Bill Low, Deedee McNeil, John Burr.
