High school has been the one entity around which our lives have revolved for the past three years, but no more. We are going to move on, and as our todays become tomorrows, the memories of our high school years will grow dim. So, before we bid farewell to old friends and familiar places, let us pause and reflect upon our last year here, our senior year. WELLESLEY FREE LIBRARY WELLESLEY, MASS. 02181 3 DEDICATION In March, Wellesley High School lost one of its finest and most valuable staff members, Mr. James Lape, long connected with the English De¬ partment, and Assistant Principal of Wellesley High School since 1962. Those students who were privileged to have him as a dedicated and inspiring teacher of English remember him with deep affection. After assuming his duties as Assistant Principal, his relationship with the students was not as intimate as that of our teach¬ ers or our counselors, yet Mr. Lape, perhaps more than any other person, worked and fought for new programs, appropriations, and improve¬ ments to the school that would benefit all stu¬ dents. Mr. Lape’s prowess and accomplishments in the field of education were recognized on a na¬ tional level. He was made Local Chairman of the National Convention of Teachers of English and also received a John Hay Fellowship for study at the University of Chicago. At our own high school, Mr. Lape was the motivating force be¬ hind the American Studies Course; he introduced the speech program for sophomores; and he also promoted the incorporation of more electives in the school curriculum. Mr. Lape was a man of vision and intellect. He had a feeling for what a school should be, and yet he never restricted his ideas to the pres¬ ent. Because of his extraordinarily rich and diversified mind, he was able to foresee the coming trends in education and to see the gaps in the curriculum of our own school. During his eighteen years at Wellesley High School, he tried to fill those gaps, thereby making a Wellesley education more full and rewarding. Perhaps no finer compliment was paid to him than that by our Principal, Mr. Graves: “No one could possibly be an associate of Jim’s through the years without admiring his scholarship, ideals, and tenacity in getting a job done. “During his term as Assistant Principal he has persistently striven to give us all that ‘forward look’ in the field of curriculum that is so neces¬ sary in this day and age of revolutionary change in all areas of education. “I know I can speak for all of us when we congratulate him on the opportunity now pre¬ sented to him as he becomes the new Principal of Weston High School.” The Class of 1966 dedicates this Yearbook to you, Mr. Lape, as a token of its great appreci¬ ation and respect. Thank you for all that you have done for us, for those thousands of students that have come before us, and those thousands yet to come. 4 mum 5 High School is probably the time of greatest intellectual transition. We enter Wellesley High as relatively unsophisti¬ cated adolescents, and by the time we leave, most of us have set our course for a lifetime. 6 Ray Scannel, Custodian The education we receive here goes be¬ yond mere academic study, for the com¬ plete development of an individual in¬ volves many experiences outside the intellectual realm. 8 “What do you mean, I’ve been drafted!” 9 Through our everyday relationships with teachers and students we come to achieve a better understanding of our fellow man. Association, not isolation, is the key to true knowledge. 10 CAFETERIA STAFF —First Row: Mrs. Mary Calzini. Graves, Principal The time has come for you, the Class of 1966, to say goodbye to your high school days. Measured by a lifetime, it was but yesterday that you left home and found yourself in school for the first time. Through the years that followed, you have grown in stature and in knowledge. Your parents and your teachers join in hoping that under their guidance you have learned to distinguish between the important and the trivial, between what is right and wha t is wrong, and between the true and the false. As you leave your high school and go your separate ways, to further education, the world of business, the armed forces of our country, or the early establishment of a home of your own, you can rest assured that the hopes and prayers of your parents, teachers, and friends go with you. Be true to your highest ideals and continue to build on the foundation that has been laid. Goodbye and good luck to all of you! Samuel M. Graves Principal it 12 We finally made it. I can truthfully say that there were times when I thought we would never finish this book, but no matter how tight the situations became, the staff somehow always man¬ aged to pull through. Often we did not get much sleep during the week before deadlines, but we were always able to finish the last bits of material to give to the printer when he came to collect them. This issue of the Wellesleyan represents the work of almost a hundred people. The jobs that these individuals performed ranged from run¬ ning errands to creating copy and layout. I realize that it sounds trite to say this, but each person’s work was vital to the completion of the book. Someone had to deliver those messages, and though such help is not as exciting as that of designing the cover, it was just as important. I imagine that there will always be a bottom position on the job totem pole of any organiza¬ tion, but without the bottom, there would be nothing to hold up the rest of the group. When I accepted the position of Editor-in- Chief last spring, I took it for granted that there would be a large number of people who would be willing to work for the yearbook. In retro¬ spect, I now realize that I was indeed taking a great deal for granted. Senior year is a busy time, and there are many other organizations in school besides the Wellesleyan, a fact which all editors- in-chief have a disturbing tendency to overlook. However, despite the blitheness of my assump¬ tions of a great corps of workers, I was by no means let down. We had many more applicants than staff positions. The number of student man-hours put into the production of this yearbook is phenomenal. It testifies to the ambition and responsibility of the Class of 1966. These individuals have put a great deal of time and effort into a cause which they deemed worthwhile. I want to thank every¬ one connected with the 1966 Wellesleyan for their co-operation and their support. This is as true of Wellesley High School as it is of any enterprise. It is not an accident that our school is one of the best in the nation. The influence of the school commit’ tee and Mr. Chaffee is seen in our outstanding school plant, as well as in our experienced and capable faculty. However, the coordinating of these elements into a living, functioning institu¬ tion of learning is the job of Mr. Graves, Mr. Lape, and Mr. Kamitian. We can be thankful that our school has been placed in the capable hands of these men, who have done so much to make our stay here a profitable and memorable one. MRS. CRAIG Dean of Girls GUIDANCE As we look toward the challenges of our com¬ ing years, we do so with the vigor and im¬ patience of youth. At times, however, we do not always do so with wisdom. This perspective which is needed is many times supplied by our guidance counselors. They do not seek to damp¬ en our youthful spirit of determination, but rather they seek to channel our energies into ever broadening spheres of experience, whether in the Armed Forces, in college, or in the busi¬ ness world. We owe our enthusiastic counselors a great deal for their expert advice and needed assistance in this our greatest period of mental and emotional growth. MRS. The proud surge of satis¬ faction at having contributed a great amount of time and effort to a worthwhile cause, and the happy surprise of discovering that other people have the same interest, are the real rewards of extracurricular activities. I t 48 ACTIVITIES 49 STUDENT COUNCIL 1 I 50 The Student Council has experienced a highly successful year under the dy¬ namic leadership of President Barry Cluff, Secretary Sue Connolly, Treasurer Nancy Talbot, Vice-President Jeff Peters, and Corresponding Secretary Donna Johnson. It is the function of the Council to serve as a representative body for all of the students. The council solicits sug¬ gestions from students and faculty and gives careful consideration to all well- intended suggestions. 51 This year’s Council has conducted many successful projects and activities. The Kick-off Dance and the Homecom¬ ing Dance are among the early projects, but the most successful endeavor was the great success of the new Student Activity Package. The Council once again sponsored the Variety Show, featuring the Miss Wel¬ lesley High School Pageant. The winter meeting of the PTSA was conducted by the Council. The evening featured dis¬ plays prepared by each of the extra¬ curricular groups in the school. Much credit for the success of this year’s Council goes to President Barry Cluff, Miss Lorden for her dedicated guidance, and the entire administration for their liberal co-operation through¬ out the year. Its effective¬ ness, as usual, was in question, and in an attempt to make improvements, the Smoking Council was reorganized. In¬ stead of election by the student body, interested people were asked to sign. This list was then carefully reviewed by Mr. Kamitian and selected faculty mem¬ bers who finally chose twenty-eight stu¬ dents to be members of the Council. Qualifications for membership were the number of study halls each student could contribute and his or her school citizen¬ ship record. Each member was assigned to patrol during a certain number of study periods a week. The effectiveness of the Council de¬ pends upon everyone’s co-operation. This year’s club has been financially able, and with the larg¬ est membership ever, it has undertaken and supported many town projects. The Key Club operates the refresh¬ ment stand at all Wellesley High School home football games and sells Hallo¬ we’en candy throughout the town to help bolster the club treasury, which in turn helps to support retarded chil¬ dren’s parties for community children. These parties are given every other Sat¬ urday during the school year. In addi¬ tion to these parties and Settlement House parties for the deprived children in the Roxbury area during the Christ¬ mas and Easter seasons, club members also participate in such activities as col¬ lecting and bringing books to the Hill¬ side School for Boys in Marlboro, Massa¬ chusetts, and helping the Red Cross members with any odd jobs that they may request. Members of the Key Club usually meet every Monday night in the Key¬ noter Room of Howard Johnson’s in Wellesley Square and are a selective group who not only must attain a fine scholastic record but also must have exemplary citizenship qualities. With the leadership of President Todd Smith, Vice-President Rich New hall, Secretary Dave Littlefield, and Treasurer Ron Broadbent, the club looks forward to a continued success. They also wish to extend a special thanks to Mr. Kamitian who is retiring after this year in order to devote more of his time to administrative work. The Junior Red Cross, under the leader¬ ship of Dian Miner and Peggy Slavin, and faculty adviser, Miss Ann Hickey, has continued to expand the variety of its service projects. The Saturday Morning Parties this year once again have proved to be a great success. The group, under the leadership of Cheryl Johnson, has con¬ tinued visiting and instructing patients at Med- field State Hospital. The girls are now con¬ sidering the possibility of visiting shut-ins in Wellesley. In addition to all of these projects, the group has continued its drives for enroll¬ ment, for paperback books for veterans, and for records for retarded children, and also has helped the Key Club with the Christmas and Easter parties at the Cooperstown Settlement House. The members of this group deserve much praise, for each girl has unselfishly given her time to help others. Dian, Peggy, and Miss Hickey deserve special praise for the time and planning involved in co-ordinating all of these activities. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Wellesley High School students had many opportunities to meet foreign stu¬ dents during the year under the auspices of the American Field Service Club whose adviser is Mrs. Levesque. Guest speakers at afternoon meetings told about many interesting experiences in such countries as Turkey, Ecuador, and Uganda. A Christmas party was held to which many AFS’ers came from nearby towns, and Wellesley families were the hosts for foreign students during an AFS weekend which included an interna¬ tional dinner. Fund-raising activities included the fall tag-d.iy and the Christmas card sale to help support our AFS students. Hel¬ ena Berends, a Dutch girl from Portugal and Brazil, Marcos -Sampaio from the south of Brazil, Petros Aklilu from Ethiopia, Isaac Hajibai from Iran, and Isabel Chau from Peru contributed to life at Wellesley High School. This year Peter White was sent to study in Den¬ mark, Tina Jameson to study in Greece, and Carl Penndorf spent the previous summer in Uganda. Petros Aklilu, Helena Berends, Marcos Sampaio 57 Under the leadership of Mr. Andrew, the Future Teachers of America Club, headed by Konnie Hill and Nancy Hughes, has given many girls the oppor¬ tunity during study periods to visit the Kingsbury and Phillips elementary schools where the club members have observed and assisted classroom teach¬ ers. Other activities of the club included listening to speakers on topics concern¬ ing education and college, acting as hosts to a five-school discussion on teaching, and taking field trips to the State Teach¬ ers Convention and to nearby elemen¬ tary schools. DEBATING CLUB This year the Wellesley High School Debat¬ ing Club became a charter member of the new Bay State Debating League. Under the new system, once a month all of the teams meet at one of the schools. Each team is represented by four squads, two varsity and two novice. Thus, each time the League meets, sixteen debates are held. In this way, more interested students are given the opportunity of participating in the ancient art of debating. Our Debating Club, under the able leader¬ ship of Mr. Shepard, boasts its largest and most talented membership in several seasons. The team, led by Co-Captains Jim McCaffrey and Steve Daggett, has met some of the finest squads in the Bay State League and has sent them to defeat. Seniors Ed Rice and Jim Donovan, to¬ gether with Juniors Pete Sorlein and Alan Ger¬ lach, bolster the team’s varsity squads. Welles¬ ley’s undefeated novices, led by Tom Reilly, Michelle Kelsch, Bill Manburg and Betsy Gard¬ ner, make prospects bright for the future of debating in Wellesley. 60 JUNIOR CLASSICAL LEAGUE First Row: Nancy Perry, Judy Reid. Betsy Giese, Margaret Hansberry, Pat Mareneck, Sally Collins. Second Row: Mrs. Keenan, Joe Benotti, Jim McCaf¬ frey, Dave Morgan, Bill Taggart, Don Trageser, Don Quatrale. The Junior Classical League, spon¬ sored by Mrs. Keenan, is an organization devoted to the appreciation of classical Greek and Roman civilization. The Wellesley High School chapter in 1964 received its charter from the National Junior Classical League. Members have decided to wear at monthly meetings Roman costumes which they have made. The meetings consist of business discussions followed by an entertainment period. Entertain¬ ment is provided by the members of the Junior Classical League with such activi¬ ties as slave auctions, Olympic games, or dramatic projects based on mythology or history. The Wellesley High School Junior Classical League participates in the state convention held each spring. Each Christmas, the club also contributes gifts to the New England Home for Little Wanderers. RADIO CLUB The Radio Club, founded last year, had a busy and successful year. A sin¬ gle sideband transceiver and trap an¬ tenna were purchased and assembled. These put the club station, WA1DUL, actively on the air. For students inter¬ ested in getting or upgrading their licenses, code sessions were held. Also, filmstrips on electronic theory were shown. The Radio Club is sponsored by Mr. Lydon, and the president is Winfield Perry. The meetings were held every other Friday in Room 120. First Row: Nat Tetrick, Sue Whitney, Win Perry. Headed by Editor-in-Chief Judi Murphy, Managing Editor Don Kelley, Neios Editor Martha Minster, Feature Editor Kathy Krall, Boys ' Sports Editor Paul Sullivan, Girls ' Sports Editor Di Miner, Photography Editor Bill Stan- wood, and Exchange Editor Jane Dono¬ van, the staff published more issues with more pages than in previous years. The extra pages were needed for the inclusion of more news, the closer cov¬ erage of sports, the initiation of the political Viewpoint column, and the change to five columns. Paying for the additional pages and balancing the books as well were the tasks of Business Manager Randy Drew- rey, Advertising Manager Stanley Ride¬ out, and Co-ordinating Editor Bill Juliani. Pledging “to uphold the high purposes of this Society, striving in every way, by word and deed, to make its ideals the ideals of my school and my life,” these students ac¬ cepted their National Honor Society certificates and pins from Mr. Graves, with his hearty con¬ gratulations. Along with the distinction of being part of this national organization, the members accepted privileges and responsibilities. The main privi¬ lege they enjoyed was that of the Honor Study, a traditional permission allowing the students to make use of an unproctored study hall. They also were given the responsibility of supporting Despina Kourti, a Greek foster child. The money for Despina ' s support came from brownie sales, headed by Ed Rice. Among other activities of the Society was the sending of four representatives, including Presi¬ dent Jim McCaffrey and Secretary Karen Neva, to the Convention of the Eastern Massachusetts Association of National Honor Society Chapters, held in Townsend. The delegates, including two Juniors, learned a great deal about the purposes, activities, and goals of the National Honor Society. 64 First Row: Lois Lubin, Jenny Thompson, Eva Ricardi, Martha Downes, Barbara Marchetti, Kathy Johnson, Kay Kirchberger, Jim Mc¬ Caffrey, Karen eva, Sue Charow, Laura Bachrach, Elena Ferguson, Elaine Wood, Peggy Genovese, Lucille Allison. As before, the club sponsored the Science Quiz Team, under the direction of Mr. Lydon. Also aided by the club was the Westinghouse Corporation in its annual talent search. Once again the Science Club played a large part in the annual Science Fair which was co¬ ordinated by Student Science Fair Director Winfield Perry. The Science Club held one meeting a month, with guest speakers lecturing on various scientific topics. Field trips were made to the Massachusetts General Hos¬ pital and to other places of scientific interest. In the spring, the Quiz Team will compete in the championship round. The quizzes, which are sponsored by the American Chemical Society, were televised once a month by WHDH-TV on Dateline Boston. SCIENCE FAIR The 1966 Science Fair, Wellesleys 14th, was held on March 17, and co-ordinated by Mr. D’Aniello, Chuck Pollina, and Winfield Perry. The fair pro¬ vided an opportunity for students interested in science to exhibit their skills and knowledge. Again this year exhibiting at the fair was volun¬ tary. For the first time, a mathematics division was added to the biology, chemistry, and physics divisions. From some forty projects, which exhibited more depth and achievement than in years past, prize winners were chosen. First prize winners were Bob Lovewell, biology; John Patterson, physics; and Paul Segel, mathematics. 69 First Row: Cheryl Pope, Sue Jones, Susan Sayer, Laurence Palmeri, President; Jill Kearney, Vice-President; Maureen Zepp, Treasurer; Lin¬ da Newhall. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club offered interested students the chance to become involved in many aspects of the theater. During the year, the club brought in guest lec¬ turers, including a professional makeup artist and the head of the Drama De¬ partment at Wellesley College. It spon¬ sored an afterschool performance of “Living Stage ’65“ presented by the Charles Playhouse, and the club also took a field trip to Stratford, Connecti¬ cut, to see a production of Henry IV, Part II. The keynote of the year was struck when the club presented in May a full-length play from the classic reper¬ tory. 70 OPENING EXERCISES First Row: Judy Onthank, Linda Roberts, Elena Ferguson, Sue Light. Second Row: Miss Teed, Claire Roderick, Doug Smith, Don Quatrale, Amy Wallace, Emily Bateman. The Wellesley High School Chess Team has had a successful 1966 season. Although the team is only in its second year, the mem¬ bers have a good chance of becoming the League champions. The credit for the suc¬ cess of the team and for that of the League itself, is in great part due to the fine work of Mr. Barr, the adviser. Through the efforts of Mr. Barr and other advisers, the League is continuing to expand and looks forward to the joining of other towns by 1967. The attacking force of Wellesley has been led by Lee Hansen on number one board, and now third in the League, Bert Reif on number two board, Lois Lubin on third board, Allen Carleton on fourth, and on fifth board Owen Kite. This committee opens every school day with a short selection of music and an in¬ spirational reading, followed by a moment of personal meditation. Under the guidance of Miss Teed, the committee invited pupils from all classes to participate in this tra¬ ditional school activity. Integrated original readings and modem vocal music supple¬ ment the works of great authors, composers, and statesmen which are used in the pro¬ grams presented every morning. The organization, consisting of some of our best musicians, is the only group in the school providing popular dance music. They have made several appear¬ ances at school affairs, including P.T.S.A. meetings, assemblies, and the Variety Show. Last year they were selected the outstanding ensemble at our music festi¬ val in Foxboro and competed again this May at Fairhaven. CHAMBER CHOIR The Chamber Choir, in its second year at Wellesley High School, has continued its concentration on music of the Renais¬ sance and Baroque periods. This choir, consisting of eighteen mixed voices, is under the direction of Mr. Landry. This year, with weekly rehearsals, it is prepar¬ ing a Bach Motet similar to the one per¬ formed by the Madrigal Singers two years ago. Among its activities this year have been performing at the student concert sponsored by the Wellesley Community Chorus and also at an All-State Concert in Fitch¬ burg; providing background music for several social occasions, school and otherwise, the most recent of which was playing for an evening gathering of the Eastern Arts Association at the Gardner Museum. The strains of Boc¬ cherini floating from the balcony through the flowery courtyard added the finishing touch to the charming mood of the old Florentine palace. STRING TRIO—Suzanne Smith, Debbie Thompson, Lucille Allison. MADRIGAL CHOIR The Madrigal Choir, now in its third year, was organized and spon¬ sored by Mr. Landry. Under his lead¬ ership, a small group of girls and boys practiced once a week. This small mixed chorus provided an oppor¬ tunity for its singers to perform both sacred and secular music of the six¬ teenth and seventeenth centuries. The Madrigal Singers participated in the Spring Concert as well as in outside concerts. Seated: Kathy Krall. Standing: Roberta Peters. Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Landry, is an elective that has always been popular with students because of the wide variety of music sung and the performances in which it takes part. The club performs at the Christmas and Spring concerts and at graduation. Each Glee Club member met in a di¬ visional group and then in the collective meeting, which was on Tuesday this year. Because of a greatly increased member¬ ship, which presented scheduling prob¬ lems, only 90% of the approximately 130 members were able to meet simul¬ taneously. Unlike previous years, there were no officers elected, but Libby Lowell and Mary Holland acted as assistants to Mr. Landry, and Sue Charow again was a very capable accompanist. 79 The long lonely hours of relentless practice, the in¬ furiating frustration of a persistent flaw, the polite ap¬ plause of a quiet gallery, the thunderous cheers of a delirious stadium, the satisfied fatigue of a complete effort, these are all a part of the epic of sport. 11 80 SPORTS 81 82 The 1966 Red Raider football team under new coaching produced a 4-3-2 Bay State League record this season. It was due to the loss of Head Coach John Certuse because of illness, that Assistant Coach George Kerivan and JV Coach John McDermott undertook the task of instructing the Wellesley Team. The club’s record included losses to Framingham South, Milton, and Needham; ties with Norwood and Framingham North; and wins over Dedham, Braintree, Walpole, and Natick. The highest point of the season occurred when the tremen¬ dously fired-up Wellesley team stomped the Natick Redmen 20-0. The offensive unit exhibited one of the most well balanced attacks in the league with the excellent passing of quarterback and co-captain Tim Adams to backs Craig Lovell and Scott Evans and ends Butch Sinko and Neil Midkiff. The other half of the threat was shown by the fine running of Craig Lovell, Scott Evans, Tim Adams, Jim McCann, and Curt Rawley. The men that made it all possible were the forward wall; ends Midkiff and Sinko, tackles Mel Morta- relli and Rock Perdoni, guards Pete Ciesluk, Most Improved Player Award winner, and Sundy Sutherland, co-captain and Jaycee Player of the Year, and Center Bob Szetela. The golden voice of the Red Raiders. 83 1 This year ' s defensive unit was one of the finest yet, giving up no more than about six points a game. It was made up of many of the above mentioned as well as some good specialists, such as Joe Indresano, Steve Glorioso, Paul Na- hass, and Bruce Howes. There were many injuries this season, two of them serious. In the Dedham game senior Jim Kerivan suffered a broken leg, while later in the year junior Paul Rogan was disabled by a con¬ cussion. Some of those always there doing a good job and carrying the burdens when starters were disabled were seniors Bob DePan, Paul Fitz¬ gerald, Jim Maples, Jack O ' Neil, John Doyle, Mike O’Rourke, and Dave Littlefield and juniors John Burr, Richie Newhall, George Handy, Jim Mclsaac, and Bill Mastro. Through the efforts of all these boys and under the co-captainship of Sundy Sutherland and Tim Adams and the expert coaching of Mr. Kerivan and Mr. McDermott, Wellesley, despite injuries and bad breaks, still had a wonderful and successful year. 85 First Row: Jim McCann, Jay Lubker, Paul Fitzgerald, Curt Rawley, Gerry Foote, Peter Ciesluk, Warren Keene, Jim Mclsaac, Steve Glorioso, John Burr. Practice was held on three afternoons a week to per¬ fect the drills and music which delighted many during the pre¬ game and half-time shows of Red Raider football games. The highlight of the season came on Sunday, November 21, 1965 when the band performed a fifteen-minute half-time show at a nationally televised Boston Patriots Professional football game. Letters were received from as far away as St. Louis con¬ gratulating ihe band on its fine performance. SOCCER The 1965 Soccer Team, under the direc¬ tion of Coaches Dodge and Heller, displayed throughout the season a willingness to work and a desire to win. Captain Todd Smith, All Scholastic 1964, deserves much of the credit for instilling spirit and unity into the squad. But there were many other factors which enabled the team to register a win¬ ning season. Among these were the effort displayed by Art Brown, All Scholastic 1965, and the almost impenetrable defense of Phil and Pete Johnson. On offense John Mar- chetti and Greg Snyder showed unusual ability. Coach Dodge also deserves a great deal of recognition. His diligence and sin¬ cerity inspired the team and spurred it on to its winning ways. 93 First Row: John Patterson, George von der Lippe, George Merrill, George Smith, Rick Sawicki, Crawford Lindsay, Mark Stewart, Xed McFadden. Second Row: Jim Hildreth, Bruce Johansen, Jim Dolph, Dave Leyland, Russ Wig- gin, Jack Powell. Wayne Coddington, Pete Sorlien, Phil Walsh, Eric Sheldon, Jim Guzelian, Allan Stone, Mr. St. Cyr. George Merrill CROSS COUNTRY This year’s highly spirited Cross Country Team completed a tough season with a 6 win, 3 loss record. Sophomore Craw¬ ford Lindsay gave veterans George von der Lippe, George Merrill, and George Smith a needed push to spark their wins. George von der Lippe and “Crawf” Lindsay held the upper two positions in the scoring un¬ til late in the season when von der Lippe was held back by illness. All in all, this year’s team showed fierce determination through the entire season, as exemplified by such steady com¬ petitors as Jack Powell and Pete Sorlien. Hats off to Coach St. Cyr and the hard-working har¬ riers. 94 ■ k This year ' s Field Hockey Team was led to a thrilling, undefeated season by the sensational performances of Co-Captains Trisha McGuire and Donna McCabe. Under the able guidance of the coach, Mrs. Lee, the team repeated as champions of the Bay State Association. A top- notch defense and an outstanding offense, led by the Co-Captains, and seniors Karen Larsen and Kathy Johnson, sparked the team to thirty- eight goals while the opponents could manage only ten. The talent for this team and the Junior Varsity, led by Captain Donna Johnson, was recruited from the girls who participated in Field Hockey intramurals. Ex¬ perienced grapplers such as Captain Art Brown, John Paltrineri, Renzo Perdoni, Mel Mortarelli, and Bruce Kaczowka coupled with promising newcomers such as Dick Noonan and Jim Guzelian. Scott Evans and Mike Maccini led the team to a 9-3 record. The boys were looking ahead to the regional tournament and the state tour¬ nament, which were to be held in Lowell this year. Second Row: Kay Pawlina, Claire Frazier, Becky Lonergan, Helen Ladd, Sue Pawlina, Anne Scanned. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Girls ' Basketball Team, coached by Miss Brown had another success¬ ful season. The Varsity squad, led by Captains Donna McCabe and Sue Tal¬ madge, compiled a record of 6 wins, 2 losses in the eight Bay State Association contests. The team, consisting of many experienced seniors and underclassmen, had the advantage of height necessary to control the backboards and to shoot effectively. The Junior Varsity squad, captained by Sally Muther and Jan Garner, fin¬ ished with a 5-3 record. Many able juniors and sophomores make next year ' s squad a rival contender for the Association title. 97 BASKETBALL First Row: Karl Rau, Craig Lovell, Bob Manning, Rich Hanson, Crawford Lindsey, Steve Glorioso. Second Row: Coach Bergstrom, Dave Littlefield, Steve Dalton, Steve Morse, Dudley Cliff, Paul Sullivan, Rip Lanpher; Doug Briinblecom, Manager. The 1966 Boys Basketball Team, up¬ setting all pre-season predictions, pro¬ duced a fine, well-rounded team. Under the fourteen-year, Bay State League coach, Mr. Bergstrom, the hard-working and determined team practiced long hours to produce exciting wins over strong rivals Natick and Framingham North. High-scoring senior Steve Morse, a six-foot, five-inch center, proved him¬ self to be one of the strongest rebound¬ ers in the League. Speedster Karl Rau and sophomore Crawford Lindsey, a tremendous hustler, served as play- makers, ably backed up by seniors Bob Manning, Dick Hansen, and the return¬ ing Steve Glorioso. Juniors Rip Lanpher and Steve Dalton combined with veteran seniors Dave Littlefield, Craig Lovell, Paul Sullivan, and Dudley Cliff to fill the forward slots. Wellesley High School owes the Red Raider hoopsters much respect for a well-played season. 99 Eddie Bryant and Commissioner Jeff Peters Digger Doherty at the line INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION Captain Luigi” Morgan of the Buzzards, League’s lead¬ ing fouler. Since its inception several years ago by the physical education department, for the pur pose of providing strenuous athletic competition for those students unable to make a varsity squad and also for the purpose of providing a stimulat¬ ing activity for inactive students during the winter months, the Intramural Basketball Association has become one of the most popular sports activities at Wellesley High School. The League con¬ sists of eight teams. Each is captained, for better or worse, by a football player. This enables each club to begin with solid rebounding strength and leader¬ ship. Following a grueling twelve-game sea¬ son, and going into the championship playoffs, the four teams battling for the coveted I.B.A. crown were the Eagles, Falcons, Hawks, and Thunderbirds. 100 GIRLS’ SWIMMING This years Girls’ Swimming Team was composed of about twenty-five girls with Stephanie Birk and Lois Turnau as cap¬ tains, Mrs. Catinella as coach, and Marcia Lambert as manager. Practice was held Monday and Wednesday nights at the Babson Pool. The team, with a record of two wins and one loss had hopes of a good season with a second place in the League. Out¬ standing swimmers this year were Martha Ewing, Meg Clem¬ ent, Nancy Johnson, Nancy Brown, Lynda Havlin, and Susan Anderson, all returning next year. Divers were Susan Pal¬ mer, Hazel Sheridan, and Jean Noonan. First Row: Nancy Hughes, Pat Mareneck, Stephie Birk, Lois Turnau, Cindy Roys, Alice Crowther, Nancy Filbin. Second Row: Martha Chandler, Vancy Johnson, Kris Aikman, Debbie Heinbaugh, Betty Griffiths, Lynda Havlin, Nancy Brown. Third Row: Judy Reed, Sarah Kelly, Jean Noonan, Debbie Lovewell, Jane Matthewmian, Robbie Ferioli, Meg Clement, Sue Palmer. 101 The Swimming Team, led by Coach Mear and Co-Captains Alan Edmunds and Carl Penndorf, again came through with a winning season. The key to success was the strength and depth of the team. By mid-season, the swim¬ ming team had won five meets and was well on its way to an undefeated season. Records were being broken by Dan Ewing in the 100 Breaststroke, Alan Edmunds in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley, Carl Penndorf in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, and Ron Broad- bent in the 100 Butterfly. Other men that posed threats were Curt Rawley and Fritz Olcott, the best divers Wel¬ lesley has ever had. Fred Leonard in the 100 Freestyle and John Patterson, Bob Brew, Bob O’Connell, Bob Love- well, Bob Diffenderfer, and George Mer¬ rill in the relays also contributed to the support of the team. t-i First Row: Dan Ewing, Bob O’Connell, A1 Edmunds, Carl Penndorf, Ron Broadbent, George Merrill, Bob Lovewell. Third Roic: George Calder, David Pash- ley, Dick Ewing, Curt Rawley, Dwight Sargent, Peter Spang, Steve Howe, Fritz Olcott, Bill Larsen. 102 SWIMMING Co-Captains A1 Edmunds and Carl Penndorf 103 As usual, this year’s hockey team started off slowly, and then was undefeated in four games. Their record at deadline stood at 7-7-1. Because of Wellesley’s experience and ability, the team was highly regarded by many players and coaches in the League as one to contend with. The backbone of the team was its strong de¬ fense led by Co-Captains Dave Van Patten- Steiger and Todd Smith. Mark Callahan and Larry Mathews made up the rest of the defensive unit. Van was a hard worker and consistently saved Wellesley with his brilliant net-minding. The first line of Ray Scanned, Bill Munro, and John Marchetti constantly controlled the puck for Wellesley. Munro and Maples were leading the team in scoring, followed by Defense- men Smith and Callahan. Marchetti did not score as much as his teammates, but he con¬ tinually terrorized opposing goalies with his slap shot. The second line of Jim Maples, Tim Adams, and Paid Howard contributed many important goals and seemed to be finding them¬ selves after a few games. Barry Cluff and Ralph Dacey, who filled in when needed, could have started for many of the other teams in the League. After the first three games were lost, Co-Cap¬ tain Todd Smith scored the “hat trick” against Milton and started the team rolling. Because they had settled down, the future looked bright for the hockey team. HOCKEY 104 First Row: Mark Callahan, Tim Adams, Todd Smith, Dave Van Patten-Steiger, Larry Mathews, Jim Maples. Sec¬ ond Row: Ralph Dacey, Ray Scanned, Paul Howard, Barry Cluff, John Marchetti, Bill Munro, Mr. Hines. At the Ski Club Mixer, Vice-President Peter Johnson displays a form not unlike that of his skiing. This years Ski Club, sponsored by Mr. Lorett and headed by officers Chris Fager, President; Peter John¬ son, Vice-President; Stephie Birk, Secretary; and Paul Kanavich, Treasurer; began its activities in October with a successful mixer. During the winter season, many day and overnight trips were planned and successfully carried out. These included day trips in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont to such places as Mt. Snow in Vermont and weekend excursions in the same tri-state area. 106 First Row: Betsy Gardner, Hatsie Hoffman, Cindy Wright, John Meiklejohn, Jeff Peters, Faith Knowles, Alison Ferris, Cindy Roys. BOYS’ SKI TEAM GIRLS’ SKI TEAM The Boys’ Ski Team, led by Co-Cap¬ tains John Meiklejohn and Jeff Peters, did very well in the first half of the sea¬ son, posting a 6 and 3 record in the newly-formed Bay State Ski League. Outstanding performances were turned in by Russ Colby, Steve Colby, Jeff Peters, Phil Johnson, and John Meikle¬ john. In addition to the Bay State League races, non-league races were sched¬ uled at Holderness, Tilton, New Hamp¬ ton, and Pittsfield. The Ski Team at¬ tended a very successful two-day racing camp at Killington, Vermont, run by their sponsors, the Vorlage Ski Club. The team also practiced once a week at Blue Hill. The Girls’ Ski Team, led by Co-Cap¬ tains Faith Knowles and Cindy Wright, trained diligently to prepare for an ac¬ tive season. The training produced ex¬ cellent results, for in two league meets held at Blue Hill, the girls placed first and second, competing against other high schools in the area. The team was victorious over Cumberland High School and was hoping for success in scheduled meets with Concord Academy and Dana Hall. 107 BOYS’ GYM TEAM The Boys’ Gym Team has a reputation for excellence, and this year’s team was no excep¬ tion. The boys had been performing well and carried off victories in the majority of their meets. John Auld on the parallel bars and Bob Chatel practiced many long hours in prepara¬ tion for competition. Other seniors who con¬ tributed in every meet were Dave Fumia, a three- event man, and Bill Bean, who was the team’s leading scorer. They looked forward to the State Competition in which hopeful Wellesley candidates wished to place. The boys, as always, put on a fine performance in this year’s Gym Show. GIRLS’ GYM TEAM The Wellesley High School Girls’ Gym Team started the season with two wins and one loss. Under the two Co-Captains, Diane Dickinson and Linda Gikis, the team strove to obtain per¬ fection in their routine. Some outstanding per¬ formers were Diane Dickinson in Tumbling and Floor Exercise, Linda Gikis on the Trampoline, Alicia Martin on the Trampoline and Floor Exercise, and Nancy Spilman on the Unevens. The team also participated in this year’s Gym Show and in the State Competition. GYM SHOW no Certainly one of the biggest sporting event s of the year at Wellesley High School is the Gym Show. The 26th annual performance was put on March 19 and 20 before two sellout crowds. The show was a result of the combined efforts of the Phy¬ sical Education Department, the Student Council, and the Music Department. The traditional exercises and apparatus work were performed by the students as well as some special events such as tumbling, the rope skip¬ ping drill, the bamboo dance, and the spectacular triples act. A fitting conclusion to the evening was supplied by the traditional tableaux. Ill Behind the big right arm of ace hurler Tim Adams, this year’s Raider baseball team should prove to be a strong contender for the Bay State League crown. However, Adams is not the only bright star on the horizon for Coach George Kerivan’s nine. Such seasoned veterans as Pete Ciesluk, Bruce Howes, Dudley Cliff, Ed Doherty, and Steve “Smokey” Morse make the prospects for the 1966 season bright. Last spring the team had a rather mediocre record of 10-8. Despite the uninspiring statistics, the club was a serious contender for most of the season, but during the latter stages some heart¬ breaking losses killed their chances. However, this year’s team shapes up to be one of the best ever. Tim Adams BASEBALL 1 I First Row: Bill Chisolm, Ed Doherty, Peter Cicsluk, Tim Adams, Bruce Howes, Dudley Cliff, Steve Morse. Indi¬ vidual standouts were George Smith, who broke the half mile record, Karl Rau, George von der Lippe, and Craig Lovell. This spring the cindermen should be in the thick of the League race. On the track Welles¬ ley should be almost unbeatable with Lovell in the hurdles, Rau and Dick Peterson in the sprints, von der Lippe, Paul Sullivan, and Neil Midkiff in the quarter mile, and young sopho¬ more sensation, Crawford Lindsey, in the mile. The team’s vulnerable spot will be in the field events with Peter Johnson, Scott Evans, Vin Sallinger, and Curt Rawley the only proven competitors. The determined play of juniors Donna McCabe and Tricia McGuire, and sophomores Hoagy Ladd, Muffy Horak, and Carol Manning was an important factor in the team ' s success. Because of the lack of available public school competition, the girls were forced to play more experienced private schools, and the club’s excellent record is a tribute to the hard work of the team members, and the fine coaching of Miss Lorenz. The 1965 Golf Team secured third place in the Bay State League with an admirable rec¬ ord of six wins and two losses. Last year’s graduation took its toll with five regulars departing. This season the team contains only two returning lettermen. Captain Bill Nugent, a three- year man, and longhitting junior, Bruce Bellmare. With these two veterans as a founda¬ tion, and with a reserve of prom¬ ising, but as yet untested, talent, Coach Burgess is hopeful of building a winning team this season. 117 First Row: Jamie Papolos, Owen Kite, John Meiklejohn. Second Row: Jeff Peters, Barry Cluff, Mark Angier, Artie Brown, Mr. Andrew. Jeff Peters BOYS’ TENNIS For years Wellesley’s strongest sport has been tennis, and last season was no exception. Led by the fine play of Cap¬ tain Steve Wood and that of Barry Cluff and Jeff Peters, the 1965 Boys’ Tennis Team won the Bay State League Championship with an outstanding rec¬ ord of seventeen victories and one de¬ feat. The future for this year’s team looks bright with many veterans re¬ turning to help the Raiders retain their crown. 11 118 The accomplishments of the Girls’ Tennis Team are all too often over¬ shadowed by the stellar achievements of their masculine counterparts. How¬ ever, last year’s team put on a perform¬ ance worthy of the best of Mr. Andrew’s netmen. Coached by M rs. Lee, and led by the outstanding play of Vicki Woods, Tina Hegsted, and Cheryl Johnson, the Girls’ Tennis Team compiled a very fine record of seven wins and only one setback. With the three fine players above returning, and with the additional help of Brabs Bennison, Nancy Hughes, and Marianne Varney, the squad is con¬ fident of continued success this year. Tina Hegsted performs the backcourt ballet. Everyone seemed friendlier, and the whole world looked bright—it always does when you’re on top of it, and that’s where we seemed to be. The work was hard, but we somehow managed to get by. There were tight spots and dismal moments too, but they were, for the most part, few and far between. And now we suddenly find ourselves at the end of one of the most eventful eras of our lives. It is all over, but many times we will look back and say, “It was a very good year!’ it 120 SENIORS 121 SENIOR OFFICERS Ralph Dacey, President Rick Wiggin, Vice-President Sue Talmadge, Secretary Chip Goigone, Treasurer 122 First Row: Judy Onthank, Sue Talniadge, Ralph Dacey, Chip Gorgone, Rick Wiggin, Sue Connolly, Mr. Herlin. Kaufman and Moss Hart, in the afternoon on Friday, December 17, 1965, and in the evening on Saturday, December 18, 1965. This famous farce, originally produced in 1936, still retains its initial humor, meaning, and audience appeal. The play concerns the Martin Vanderhof family living in New York City in the Mid-1930’s. Each member of this family is concerned with his own pursuits—the grandfather with his snakes and darts and commencement exercises, the mother Penny the would-be playwright, the father Paul with his fire¬ works, Essie the mad ballerina, and Ed the painter. Trouble ensues when Alice, Penny’s daughter, falls in love with her boss’s son, Tony Kirby, and the entire Kirby family arrive for dinner on the wrong day. No member of the audience can forget the scene that follows when the ballet teacher tries to wrestle with staid Mr. Kirby, Penny probes too deeply into Mrs. Kirby’s subconscious, and three Justice Department men arrive to arrest Ed for his circulars. Few people realize the amount of work put into this production which required 1936 costumes, properties, and set, as well as innumerable hours of rehearsal. Flawless timing was necessary for this farcical play in order to co-ordinate entrances, exits, lighting, and fireworks explosions. The play represented three months of hard work on the part of the cast, and particularly on the part of the director, Mr. Thomas Fitzsimmons. 127 JUNIOR PROM 128 “Once Upon a Time” there was a Junior Prom. It was March 27, 1965, to be exact. Judy Onthank was the stunning Queen, and Ralph Dacey the handsome King. Following the coro¬ nation, we all fell in line for the Grand March led by the Royal Couple and the Duke and Duchess, Ron Broadbent and Lynn Edmonds. The evening was one of manifold memories. 129 First Row: Gail Wong, Cindy McAllister, Joanne Feeney, Karen Scott, Lynn Hoffman, Sue Connolly. YOUTH-IN-GOVERNMENT DAY For the fourteenth consecutive year, the Exchange Club of Wellesley has sponsored its annual “Youth-in-Govern- ment Day” for juniors. Having filed for official nomination papers, candidates campaigned with posters and speeches. After a school-wide election, winning candidates served their day in office on Friday, March 19, 1964, learning the responsibilities of a public official. At the annual banquet given for the winning candidates, prizes were given for the best campaign posters, and the winners of the Essay Contest were announced. Tricia McGuire, Brian Monahan, Bill Nugent, and Sue Talmadge were awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. 130 WELLESLEYAN The 1966 Wellesleyan repre¬ sents the work of a great number of very dedicated people.
