Our high school years, unlike those of our European counterparts, have meant personal growth instead of commitment, self discovery instead of choosing a career. We have been learning re¬ sponsibility, cooperation and broadening of scope. Now, however, we verge on the moment of testing ourselves. We are the hope and strength of a world at a time of crisis and change. How shall we react? On leaving high school we divert our attention away from ourselves and toward our society. We must not only cope with this transition but profit from it. Though we have been waiting for this moment, though we are exhilarated and impatient, yet are we unsure. Let us take full inventory of our years here. We must look to the soil, the climate, the gardeners of our growth, that we may know ourselves that much better. Let us keep this book as a reminder of the luxury of being allowed to develop carefully and well, with time to become capable and ready for life. This Yearbook is a mirror of that final season of per¬ sonal growing which is our senior year. Here, together never again, we became what we now are and glimpsed that which we shall be. DEDICATION Mr. Chapman is a Wellesley institution. He has stimulated both student and parent to thought and re-examination, sometimes arousing controversy thereby. He has been with us for thirty- eight years, longer than any other member of the faculty. While Wellesley physically expanded, Mr. Chapman made his life ' s work the expansion and enlightenment of his students ' minds. He is a scholar of incredibly broad interests, yet he is far from a pedant. He has a running love affair with life and an amused feud with complacency. His brand of history includes a gour¬ mand ' s appetite for sports and art, for literature and comic strips, for truth and myth, theory and fact. Yet he values supremely the ability to discriminate between conviction and thought, between prejudice and truth. He insists on constant inquiry, himself a ceaseless questioner. He asks much of his students, and gives immeasurably. His attitude as a teacher, and as a person, is well expressed by John Kenneth Galbraith: “. . . While I have challenged some of the solemn myths by which we are bound — and perhaps have not been everywhere kind to the solemn men who propound and perpetuate them — I am willing, at least in principle, to be challenged. Wellesley High School is being impoverished of an acutely contemporary person and a fine mind. How much his leaving is regretted is inexpressible. We can but be thankful for his having been with us for so long. So thank you, Mr. Chapman. Thank you for being here to dispel our solemnity. Thank you for giving us a glimpse beyond our sometimes shallow sophistication. Thank you for ask¬ ing the questions and smiling instead of answering. We would tell you how we feel but the gift is not ours. The Class of 1965 dedicates to you, Mr. Chapman, its Year¬ book as a token of great respect and affection. To both you and Mrs. Chapman, we truly wish the best of everything and godspeed. 4 u PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To The Class of 1965: As you turn the pages of your yearbook, you are reminded of the growth that our school has witnessed over the last few years. Your class, for instance, is the largest class ever to graduate from Wellesley Senior High School. It is, also, very important to remind ourselves that mere quantitative growth does not necessarily mean a similar growth in quality. Only the constant and dedicated work of students and staff can assure such growth in quality both now and in the days to come. Remember always that it is up to every one of you to strive for achievement of the highest quality in each endeavor you undertake. Your parents, teachers, and friends sincerely trust that in your school days you have learned the importance of quality and will display through all your future years an exemplification of the really true values of a well-spent life. Samuel M. Graves Principal 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS 6 11 ACTIVITIES 36-65 7 MRS. CORA M. WADE, Secretary to the Assistant Principal MRS. ANNE HANDY, Secretary to the Administrative Assistant MRS. CYNTHIA ANDERSON Assistant Secretary ADMINSTRATION MRS. BARBARA STEEVES Secretary to the Principal There can be no question of our indebtedness to the administrators of Wellesley High School for their generous leadership. We wish to express to the townspeople, to the school committee, and to Mr. Chaffee our gratitude for providing us with ever-expanding facilities and a skillful faculty. We are especially thankful that because of the pro¬ ficient and understanding guidance of Mr. Graves, Mr. Lape, and Mr. Kamitian, there has been fos¬ tered an atmosphere of freedom and order, based on the assumption that students are capable of mature and responsible action. The result of the competence, kindness, and insight of these men is the fine reputation of Wellesley High School. SAMUEL M. GRAVES, Principal JOHN B. CHAFFEE, Superintendent of Schools 8 i JOSEPH C. SPANG, Director of Guidance GUIDANCE In our complex and often confusing adolescent years, we are in need of all of the wise guidance and counsel that we can obtain. Our guidance department has given us not only advice and help in making important decisions but also expert counsel in helping us to make the right decisions. We are indeed grateful to them for helping us to face with confidence the seeming crises of our high school years. We are sure that in the future we will come to appreciate even more the contribu¬ tions of these counselors to our growth. JOAN W. CAPITELL, Guidance Counselor ALFRED E. MAZUKINA, Guidance Counselor k HENRY L. DUGGAN, Guidance Counselor MRS. NANCY FOSS, Guidance Secretary ANNA C. CRAIG, Dean of Girls 9 11 10 FACULTY You mystify us — we can’t quite place you, know you, find you. Yet you have found us, known us, and participated fully in our growing. You infuriate us — making demands of us when we feel incapable, having ex¬ pectations for us when we are not worthy, binding and disciplining us when we would be free. You excite us — by your perception, your knowledge, your willingness to listen and, maybe, to understand. You believe in us — and this makes us thrilled and scared. You would have us be even better than you, go farther, do more. We but pray to be deserving of your faith, your dignity, your life’s work. ALICE TEED ENGLISH WILLIAM W. REYNOLDS, JR- MRS. SARAH B. We are suddenly aware, in wonder and loneliness, of being unique individ¬ uals. We meet people, even from our own class, to whom we had never spoken — and from these acquaintances come new friends and new experiences. We are at first out of touch with the vast machine, of our school — failing to feel as if we matter to it, or participate in it. Yet soon we pick up the rhythm. We lend our hands in committees, projects, sports. As we give ourselves to the school, it continu¬ ally responds by change and growth. There is a newness in us, too, as we feel a reach¬ ing and stirring and, above all, a grow¬ ing. We find that we can’t quell a tide of laughing or unexplained sadness. Yet there were certain ac¬ tivities which drew us and held us most strongly. We learned to debate, to act, to write, to sing medieval music. When we involved and committed ourselves, the acting, writing, singing, were fulfillment. If we were nonchalant or careless, fail¬ ure was our sole reprimand. These ac¬ tivities were our own. They required of us real responsibility. They gave to us the joys of involvement, of creativity, of ac¬ tion. Not present: Debby Hoff¬ man, Jeff Peters, John Altman. The Student Council consists of ten members elected from each class, plus a president and secretary pro-tern elected by the members of the previous year ' s council. Led by President Andy Niven, Vice-Presi¬ dent Pinky Martin, Secretary Debbie Hoffman, Corresponding Secretary Shar¬ ron Saveland, and Treasurer Gig Babson, and under the guidance of Miss Lorden, the 1964-1965 Student Council was very active, both within the school and within the town. Among the new projects initiated bv the council this year were the Welcom¬ ing Mixer and the economical Student Activity Package, which included in one price admission to school dances, home sporting events, and subscriptions to the school ' s magazine and newspaper. The Homecoming Dance and the Variety Show were also sponsored by the Student Coun¬ cil. Two of the most important committees this year were the bleacher committee, which conducted a drive for new bleach¬ ers for Hunnewell Field, and the constitu¬ tion committee, which worked on revisions of the Student Council constitution. All members helped this year ' s council to ful¬ fill the demanding role of leadership and responsibility in the high school. 39 After three years of an uneasy and often questioned existence, the Smoking Council has finally achieved student ac¬ ceptance and has become an integral part of student life. Composed of eighteen junior and sen¬ ior members elected by the student body, the council has assumed part of the re¬ sponsibility for eliminating illegal smoking This responsibility is a large and difficult one to assume, for in a school the size of Wellesley High, the number of smok¬ ers can be an imposing figure. However, this year ' s council has been able to cope with the problem, and one can be as¬ sured that the number of illegal smokers has been kept to a much smaller figure than before the council ' s existence. Al¬ though illegal smoking at Wellesley High School will never be completely elimi¬ nated, it must be admitted that this year ' s council, under the leadership of Mr. Kami- tian and Lou Santospago has kept such smoking to a minimum. SMOKING COUNCIL 11 40 First Raw: Steve Wood, Bob Woodman, Andy Neher, Jim Nahass, Lou Santospago, Todd Smith, John King, Alan Lucenta, Dave Noonan, Tom Wales, Miles Page, Paul Esposito. KEY CLUB In its eighth year of service to the school and community, the Wellesley Key Club added many new activities to its annual pro¬ gram to complete its most active year. Under the direction of John King, president; Todd Smith, vice- president; Dave Noonan, secre¬ tary; A1 Lucenta, treasurer; Barry Cluff, Lt. Governor of District 5 West; and the very excellent ad- visership of Mr. Kamitian, the club continued projects such as the football concession stand, Hal¬ loween candy sale, the Key Club dance, Christmas and Easter par¬ ties at a Boston settlement home, and a continuation of the retard¬ ed childrens program. Projects receiving much consideration were the fall and spring school clean¬ up projects, a program of work¬ ing with children in the hospitals of the Boston vicinity, and work at the Medfield State Hospital. The Key Club of 1964-1965 has had a most successful year, and its members hope to continue their contributions in the future. The Exchange Club of Wellesley sponsored its annual contest for Youth-in-Government Day in April of 1964. More than thirty members of the Junior Class were elected by the entire school to fulfill the functions of local town officials. Each elected student spent one day with the official for whose office or committee he was chosen. Such an experience has traditionally been a fruitful and in¬ formative exercise in government and citizenship. Following the Youth-in-Government Day, an essay con¬ test was held among the winners of the election. The four essays which most successfully described the merits and opportunities of the Exchange Club program were selected, and the writers were given a trip to Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy accompanied Gig Babson, Glenn Mann, Bob Sykes, and Kathy Hoffman for the four-day trip. 11 Town Treasurer, Mr. Arthur Wells with Art Kennedy. 42 The Wellesley High School newspaper, The Bradford, had one of its most prolific seasons under the very able leadership of edi¬ tor-in-chief Gig Babson. The other members of the editorial staff were Giff Kriebel, managing editor; Nancy Grant, news editor; Ed Walsh, feature editor; Don Kelley, layout editor; Joel Lubin, boys’ sports editor; and Bill Juliani, photography editor. The Bradford’s economic experts were John Fortune, business manager, and Linda Richman, advertising manager. Mr. Reynolds, the paper ' s beloved faculty adviser, was always around to put a restraining hand on the sometimes over-zealous plans of the staff. The witty Genevieve column was con¬ tinued, and a new feature, Through the Key¬ hole,” was originated. The ever-popular Sports Shots” column returned, and was joined by its female counterpart, Sports Briefs.” This year ' s Bradford came up with many new ideas and improved on old ones to give its readers more enjoyment, and to keep them better informed about school activities. You are faint with tiredness, and heat broils to your temples. Your own clumsiness, weakness, slowness make frustration a commonplace emotion. But it is good to run fast and to feel, somehow, especially alive. And when it comes — the skill, the strength, the speed — exhilaration and fulfillment are there also. 11 Cocaptains Lou Santospago and Jim Nahass led the 1%4 Wellesley Red Raider football team to a 4-4-1 Bay State League Record. This included wins over Dedham, Walpole, Framing¬ ham South, and Milton, a tie with Framingham North, and losses to Braintree, Natick, and Need¬ ham by a total of just 14 points. A 28-14 romp over Norwood was forfeited when an ineligible Welles¬ ley player entered the game for one play in the waning moments of the already decided tilt. Whenever Wellesley had the ball one could expect quite an aerial show with quarterbacks Chuck Gubellini and Tim Adams throwing to receivers Tom Pawlina, Chuck Harney, and Pete Nurczynski. The explosive running of Tom Wales r Bill Fay, Stu Akerson, and Tom Johnson provided the Raiders with a balanced attack. The fine Raid¬ er forward wall, made up of tackles A1 Lucenta, Glenn Mann, and Lou Santospago, guards Dub Sweet, Sunday Sutherland, and Craig Wilgus, centers Bob Szetela, Paul Esposito, and Bill Ober- dick, provided the running room for the backs. The defense was the pride of the team this year, and with a number of the above mentioned boys and defensive specialists Jim Nahass, Chip Casey, P ete Canoni, Jim Collins, Dave Noonan, Tom Polletta, and Renzo Perdoni, one of the finest defensive units in years was produced. Under the leadership of the Co-captains, Lou Santospago, a two-way starter for three years and winner of the Jaycee Player of the Year Award; and Jim Nahass, the leading pass interceptor in the League, a fine punt returner, and the winner of the Wellesley V.F.W. Annual Football Award; and the masterful guidance of Coach Certuse and his staff; Wellesley, despite numerous injuries and bad breaks, realized a successful season. The band has always per¬ formed in a manner that is a credit to the school, but this year it has outdone itself. The new colorful red and black uniforms accentuated the fine music and precision marching of the group. At foot¬ ball games, the band was under the lead¬ ership of Drum Major John Fortune, who together with the entire band, reflected very well the excellent training received from Mr. Davis and Mr. Marchant. The band participated in the Veterans ' Day and Memorial Day parades and in the Spring Music Festival. First Row: Leslie Bartlett, Sharron Saveland. MARCHING BAND 74 m L 1 t $ ■■ .• ■ r PEP CLUB AND RALLIES The one hundred and fifty members of the Pep Club not only lend enthus¬ iastic support at the basketball and foot¬ ball games but also sponsor the school ral¬ lies. Headed by Donna O ' Hara and Jean Parker under the capable leadership of Mr. Burgess, the Pep Club first demon¬ strated their enthusiasm and school spirit in support of its teams at the Natick Rally, in which all classes participated. The jun¬ iors and sophomores put on a gala Milton Rally, and the spirited seniors, headed by Carol Hostetter, brought the football sea¬ son to a climax by organizing the Thanks¬ giving Rally. An impromptu rally before the important Braintree basketball game was one of the most enthusiastic ever given. Special credit goes to sophomores Ellen Gardner, Kathy Hebert; juniors Karen Scott, Pattie Sawtelle, Susie Ho¬ man; and seniors Cathy Jenkins, Carol Hostetter, all of whom provided extra spirit and help throughout the year, led by Ellen Fulham and Maureen Kelly. The Pep Club is more than just a group of people; it is the spirit of a rally skit, the enthusiasm of rooters in the stands, and pride for Wellesley High School. 75 The 1964 Soccer Team, coached by Mr. Dodge and assisted by Mr. Brown, displayed, in every game, good sportsmanship and deter¬ mination. Craig Smith and Ron Banay did outstanding work as co-captains of the team and were the keys that opened the doors to many scoring combinations. Other stars of the team were goalie Ken Bloch, fullbacks Ken Marchand, Bud Olcott, and Todd Smith. The forwards included Din Devitre, John Mar- chetti, Dave Gulick, and Ron Banay. The halfbacks were Jack Pyle, Pete Bagley, and All-Scholastic Todd Smith. A great deal of credit should be given to Jim Maples who filled in as goalie for the injured Ken Bloch, Co-captain, and did an outstanding job in the remaining games. Hats off to the soccer team for a fine season. FELD HOCKEY Varsity Co-Captains Dee Chu and Liz Tallon led the field hockey team, coached by Mrs. Worgan, to a season of eight wins and one loss. Wellesley ' s outstanding team which amassed a total of thirty-eight goals in con¬ trast to none for their opponents in the Bay State Association, now holds the Bay State Association Field Hockey Championship for its undefeated season. Donna McCabe, Dee Chu, Anne Dennen, and Claire Martel were outstanding players. The team participated in a Bay State Association Playday, and also in a Hockey Clinic at Wellesley College. Field Hockey Intramurals for interested girls were scheduled one week before the team tryouts. The Junior Varsity, coached by Mrs. Lee and led by Captain Jennie Thompson, had a sea¬ son of eight wins and one loss, the team show- ing much promise for another Championship next year. Injuries and ineligibility kept the team from ever realizing its potential. Senior Chip Fossett set a course record at Framingham North and broke the Wellesley course record by seven seconds. Other seniors who ran well were Tom Wright, Phil Dunn, Pete Jones, and Jeff Cannon. Juniors who scored well were George Smith and George von der Lippe. Sophomore Bruce Johansen was voted the most improved member of the team. Next year ' s team will be captained by George Merrill, who was ineligible this year be¬ cause of a transfer rule, and George Smith who was outstand¬ ing this fall. Under a veteran, hard-working, and determined coach, Mr. Bergstrom, the team worked for long hours to pro¬ duce their exciting wins. They supplied Wellesley with many thrills as they defeated strong rivals Natick and Needham by only one or two baskets, and by winning two out of their three remaining games could finish the season with 13 wins and 5 losses, thus qualifying for the Tech Tourney. Along with the great support and development of every team member, Co Captains Jim Nahass and Andy Neher were able to run a very organized team. Nahass proved to be one of the strongest guards in the league, as he, with Tim Neher, a tremendous hustler and high-scoring guard, served as the play makers. Center Bill Frisbee proved himself a fine rebounder, and often a very high scorer. John King, who finished the season as the Bay State League ' s second highest scorer, really demon¬ strated his speed on the court along with Co Captain Andy Neher, who was said to have one of the finest shots in the league, also finishing high in the league scoring race. Wellesley High School owes their basketball team much respect for a season well played. 80 First Row : Phil Giffee, Bill Frisbee, Tim Neher, Jim Nahass, Bergstrom, Bob Woodman, Bob Manning, Dave Littlefield, Paul Andy Neher, John King, Art Kennedy. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls ' Bas¬ ketball teams have both had winning seasons. The Varsity, led by Co-Captains Kathie Bus- tin and Claire Martel and coached by Mrs. Worgan, finished with 7 wins and 1 loss, to tie with Braintree for first place in the Bay State League. Leading the League until the last game, Wellesley lost to Braintree in an exciting double overtime game. The Junior Varsitv, led by Captain Kay Pawlina and coached by Flo Volpi, finished with a record of four wins, one loss, and one tie. Girls from both teams participated in a pre-season playday at Needham. The Wellesley Wrestling Team ' s opening meets were decisive victories over Roxbury Latin 29-16, Norwood 44-5, and Braintree 34-10. These meets proved to be an accurate index of the teams future success. Captains Gene Paltrineri and Dick Low led a strong team of senior veterans Steve Wood, Albie Dunn, Dubby Sweet, Tom Pawlina, and Pete Hendrich through tough competition to a victorious season of nine wins and only one league loss. In the Bay State League ' s first district meet, Wellesley qualified nine out of eleven men for the coming State Tournament, and the team was confident of a good performance. Next year ' s grap- plers should be successful with the promising re¬ turn of Artie Brown, Bob McNamara, Steve Moel¬ ler, John Paltrineri, and Renso Perdoni. BOYS’ GYM TEAM Ray Guild and Don Gilmore led the Boys ' Gvm Team, coached by Mr. St. Cvr, through the 1965 gymnastic season. The team, although not as strong as in previous seasons, worked hard and was rewarded with a good record, and had hopes of placing well in the Bay State League Meet and in the Team State Meet. Most of those competing were veteran sen¬ iors, but a good sophomore turnout gain¬ ing valuable experience provided a core for next year. The top-performing seniors this year were Don Gilmore on high bar and parallel bars, Ray Guild on rings, John Altman on long horse and rings, Ron Banay on side horse and parallel bars, Bob Sykes on long horse, side horse, and high bar, and Steve Ladd on rings. 84 GIRLS’ GYM TEAM Three years after its organization, the Girls ' Gym Team is slated to continue its fine record. This year, the team was coached by Mrs. Lee and captained by Dee Chu and Sandy Kent. The team was especially optimistic about the balance beam event since senior Dee Chu was the state champion. This vear, the schedule included eight dual meets and the state competition. The show was co-ordinated by the athletic depart¬ ment and involved nearly one hundred students. Exhibiting considerable skill and precision, the Gym Team members pro¬ vided the core for the apparatus and tumbling events. The girls ' modern dances, twirling corps, and the bamboo dance pro¬ vided traditional atmosphere and added to the excitement of the evening ' s perform¬ ance. The popular triple-balancing team showed amazing strength and co-ordina¬ tion, while the tableaux, accompanied by the Gym Show Chorus, provided a moving tribute and a fitting climax to an out¬ standing gymnastic exhibition. 87 First Row: Dan Steele, Steve Muther, Larry Matthews, Ray Scannell, William Munro, John Marchetti, Steve Howard. The hockey team, coached by Mr. Hines and cap¬ tained by Ken Bloch and Lou Santospago, was in third place in the Bay State League after eleven games, holding a record of seven wins, three losses, and one tie. After a slow start, the team came to life, winning or tying eight of the last nine games. Outstanding players for the Raiders were forwards Jim Maples, Steve Munroe, Jeff Martin, Tim Adams, John Mar¬ chetti, Ken Marchand, Terry Blaser; defense men Lou Santospago, Todd Smith, Craig Smith, and Mark Callahan; goalies Ken Bloch and Dave Van Patten Steiger. HOCKEY The Boys ' Ski Team, led by G Cap- tains Phil Dunn and Tom Wright, started the season with victories over Concord, Weston, and Way land; while losing a close meet to Tilton Academy, to give the team a 3-1 record. The best performances were turned in by Russ Colby, Phil Dunn, and John Tutino. In spite of the injury of Tom Wright, good performances from regular racers, and added support from previously untested boys helped the team finish with an outstanding record. The Girls ' Ski Team under the leader¬ ship of Heidi Ulbrich and Faith Knowles started this year with a victory over Con¬ cord High in a race at Blue Hill. With a good start this year, the girls were look¬ ing forward to a winning season. Under officers Chip Fossett, president; Chris Fager, Paul Kanavich, vice-presidents; Heidi lllbrich, treasurer; and Sue Wilde, secretary , the club planned several ski trips to areas in ew England, a weekend trip to North Conway, and a trip to Stratton, Vermont. Dav trips were also planned for Mt. Snow in Vermont, Gunstock in New Hampshire, and Brookline Hill in New Hampshire. SKI CLUB Heidi lllbrich. Chris Fager, Roger Luby, Director of Activities; Paul Kanavich. SWIMMING As they did last year, the Wellesley High School Swimming Team had a superlative season. Coached by Mr. Mear and captained by Bud Olcott, their record at mid-season was seven wins and one close defeat. The team was, for the first time, strong in every event, led by Carl Penndorf in the 100- yard and 200-yard freestyle; A1 Edmonds in the 200- yard individual medley and the backstroke; Olcott and Ron Broadbent in the butterfly; Dan Ewing in the breastroke; and Bill Baker in the 50-yard free¬ style sprint. The medley relay team of Paul Turneau, Bill Dugan, Ron Broadbent, and Bill Porter broke the school record as did the freestyle relay team of Steve Angelini, Bill Lowther, Baker, and Olcott. Fritz Olcott and Curt Raudey emerged as the leading divers. But the real strength of the team was in its depth — its second and third place finishes were responsible for piling up the huge margins of victory. The team was looking forward to key meets with Brookline and Boston English, followed by the cli¬ mactic meets of the season, the Eastern Massachusetts and the Massachusetts State Meets on February 22 and 27. First Row: Bill Lowther, Dan Ewing, Bud Olcott, A1 Ed¬ monds, Bill Dugan, Carl Penndorf, Steve Angelini, Dick Moon. Second Row: Ron Broadbent, Bill Porter, Bill Potter. Last years squad, coached by Mr. Kerivan and led by John Ciesluk and Ed O ' Neil, was runner-up in the Bay State League and went into the State Tournament against Dur- fee, only to lose in the bottom of the ninth inning. This years re¬ turning lettermen are Jim Nahass at third base, Craig Wilgus at second base, Miles Page at first base, and Chip Casey in center field. Lou Santospago will bt. catching for a host of veteran pitchers: Jim Ralli, Tim Adams, and Tom Pawlina. With such a seasoned group of fielders and pitchers, Wellesley is confident of another successful season. First Row: Bill Kerivan, Jeff Talmadge, Ned Doyle, Phil Boonisar, Eddie O’Neil, John Ciesluk. Second Row: Mr. Kerivan, Chip Casey, Miles Page, Tom Pawlina, Jim Nahass, Lou Santospago, Bill Chisholm. Tim Adams, Wellesley’s No. 1 pitcher SPRING TRACK Last years track team had a very successful season, losing only to Natick, for undisputed sec¬ ond place in the Bay State League. The 880-yard relay team broke the conference record, covering the half-mile distance in 1:33.7 seconds. Although the team lost many members through graduation last June, the present members should perform excellently this spring. Returning are Chip Fossett in the mile, Craig Lovell in the 180-yard low hurdles, and Peter Canoni in the javelin. Fossett came close to the school mile mark last year and had a good cross country season this fall. Lovell was fourth in the Class B State Championship last year. Canoni holds the school record in the javelin. Also returning are George Smith and George von der Lippe in the 880 and 440-yard runs and Jim Dick in the broad jump. Under the fine coaching of Mr. St. Cyr, the track team hopes to have another successful season. First Row: Steve Angelini, Alan Lucenta, Jim Dick, Kym Bulger, Duncan Brines, Chip Fossett, Peter Jones, Jeph Martin, Paul Esposito, Hugh Forster. Second Row: John Ault, Karl Rau, Phil Brown, Pete Bagley, Stanley Rideout, Andy Phillips, Peter Barker, Craig Lovell, Tom Johnson, Bob Schoales. Second Row: Bill Nugent, Andy Neher, Steve Munroe, Timmy Neher, Mr. Burgess. This years Golf Team is cer¬ tain to have an excellent season with the entire squad returning from last year. In 1964, the team finished third in the Bay State League with a record of six wins and three losses. Wellesley was beaten three times on the turf with defeats against Walpole, Na¬ tick, and Needham. Mr. Burgess and the squad were hopeful last winter that with some practice prior to the opening matches, the team would be able to clinch the League title and go on to the State Tournament. Top perform¬ ers for the previous two years and qualifiers for the State Schoolboy Tournament were Randy Scott and Captain Bill Parr. 98 First Row: Janet Tomao, Linda Moore, Charlotte Govatsos, Paula Visalli, Janet Dencker, Nancy French, Anne Dennen, Kathy Johnson, Holley Holden, Lyn Edmonds, Diane Minor, Becky Lonergan. Second Row : Margaret Wilcox, Trish McGuire, Liz Tallon, Dee Chu, Fran Connors, Anne Jarvis, Anne Morrison, Dinny Fletcher, Nancy Hinton, Hilary Nicholls, Sue Talmadge, Sarsha Dodge, Judy Railsback, Roxanne Marshall, Debby Benjamin, Mrs. Worgan. LACROSSE At Wellesley High School the Varsity and Junior Varsity Lacrosse teams, coached by Mrs. Worgan, start training in the early spring and play until the end of May. Our teams play private schools primarily because few public schools in the area include Lacrosse in their sports programs. Before the season got into full swing, some girls attended a Lacrosse Camp at Weston High School during April vacation. The girls also participated in various Lacrosse Clinics at Wellesley College. Some returning players from 1964 are Dee Chu, Anne Dennen, Lynn Edmonds, Linda Moore, Ann Morrison, and Liz Tallon. With the help of the enthusiastic players, the team looks for¬ ward to a successful season. BOYS’ TENNIS The Wellesley High Tennis Team, coached by Mr. Andrew, has one of the most impressive winning records of any schoolboy team in the state. It had won 58 matches in a row until losing to Need¬ ham last year. However, led by Captain Chan Crinnell, Greg Cluff, and Barry Cluff, the team finished with 17 wins and 1 loss and tied for first place in the Bay State League. The 1965 team, with Cap¬ tain Steve Wood, will undoubtedly be as good if not better than the great teams we have had in the past. First Row: Mr. Andrew, Steve Wood, Captain; John Meiklejohn, Arthur Brown, Ovven Kite, Bill Fager. Second Row: Bob Woodman, John Sawhill, Bill Lowther. 100 Last year’s girls’ tennis team, led by Captain Kathy Hoffman, had one of its best seasons in several years. Matches were won over Braintree, Dedham, Norwood, Framing- ham North, Framingham South, Brookline, and Weston, losing only to Needham and Walpole, for a final record of 8 wins and 2 losses. This year’s team is looking forward to an equally good season. GIRLS’ TENNIS First Row: Cheryl Johnson, Tina Hegsted, Vicky Woods. Second Row: Kathy Hoffman, Captain; Kathie Bustin. Third Row: Miss Morton, Ada Palladino, Leigh McFarlin, Heidi U lbrich. SENIORS We started our year in a frenzy. We worried about our grades, our pictures, our friends and enemies. We wondered about our futures, we regretted bits of our past. This was the year of self-examination and “identity crisis.” Yet, sometime after mid¬ years, we calmed down. We had done what we could, we were who we were. We had only to wait. The tumult had ceased, the slow even march had begun. On graduation evening we relive our Senior Year in capsulated form. We stare in the mirror, knowing we could look bet¬ ter, wondering how we appear to others. We rush to be on time, to get a few more compliments in our Yearbooks, to get in line. But finally we stop and wait. There will be time later to learn, to be¬ come, to appear. We must now walk slow¬ ly and evenly, accepting ourselves as we are. SENIOR OFFICERS The Senior Class of 1965 began the year in the fall by electing as their class officers Dick Low, President; Bob Woodman, Vice-President; Ron Banay, Treasurer; and Anne Sargent, Secretary. The officers started by organizing themselves, and setting up the Senior Council. With the Sen¬ ior Council, they directed and worked on the sale of the Senior Play tickets and the collection of cap and gown money. They were also responsible for organizing such senior activities as the senior prom and graduation banquet. Richard M. Low, President Robert B. Woodman, Vice-President 104 This year ' s Senior Council, under the guidance of Mr. Herlin, was composed of a member from each senior home room and the senior class officers. The council met at regular intervals and were responsi¬ ble for the sale of senior play tickets, the organization of the senior prom, the sen¬ ior banquet, and many other senior ac¬ tivities throughout the year. SENIOR PLAY On December 12, 1964, the senior class pre¬ sented Enid Bagnold s ' The Chalk Garden ' The cast, directed by Mr. Fitzsimmons and featuring Kathleen Atkinson, Sue Bernard, Lynette Kuske, John Dunbar, Irwin Massey, Jill Magnus, Cynthia Whiting, Linda Richman, and Brenda Marshall, did a superb job of revealing the problems of a young girl who, with the help of an understanding, although strange governess, succeeds in breaking away from a dominating grandmother. Stage managers Dale Little and Peter Ferioli as well as all others connected with scenery, tickets, public¬ ity, costumes, make-up, and properties, deserve congratulations for helping to make the perform¬ ance one that no one in attendance will forget. 107 “The Tea House of the August Moon” opened its doors on March 21, 1964. In a misty atmosphere of Japanese lanterns, murals, and scrolls we danced to the music of Jack Edwards and his orchestra. On top of a flowered bridge Paul Esposito and Dale Chapman were crowned King and Queen while the newly-elected Duke, Louis Santospago, and Duchess, Holly Boyd, looked on. From the traditional Grand March we whirled into more dancing, fortune cookies, and fun. “Syo- nara” came all too quickly, and the blue- green lights faded into pleasant memories. 108 JUNIOR PROM 109 SENIOR SUPERLATIVES 1965 MOST DEPENDABLE Kathy Hagan Ron Banay BEST LOOKING Lee Bartlett Pete Hendrich MOST ATHLETIC Kathie Bustin Lou Santospago FRIENDLIEST Debby Hoffman Tom Polletta 110 BEST STUDENT Maria Benotti Paul Esposito Diane McGee 111 First Row: Pat Miller, Darcy Moore, Patricia Furlong, Patricia Moore, Sue Hildebrand, Sharron Saveland, Jim Dick, John Altman, Editor in-Chief, Bill Porter, Anne Sargent, Martha Harris, Maria Benotti, Carol Stoltz, Debbie Hoffman, Sue Sandford. The reason lies not in a disdain for education, because many of us will be continuing our education for several years; nor does the rea¬ son lie in an aversion to secondary school life, as many of our happiest, most carefree days will have been spent at Wellesley High School. The reason lies in the fact of our adolescence. The teen-ager is neither child nor adult — he is wedged in between, in a phase of life which psychologists often describe as “searching for ident¬ ity ’ Often we are consciously and conspicuously unadult, embracing a subculture of our own which includes the Beatles, the “monkey”, and tight levis. At rare moments, however, such as at a college or job interview, we attempt to display the maturity and sophistication of the adult world. If we appear somewhat ambivalent about our role as adolescents, society is equally so: as we well know, the degree of permissiveness toward the adolescent has always been a dilemma for our parents — all we need do is cross a state border, and most likely we will encounter a different drinking or driving age — we may defend our country in battle but may not choose its leaders. Society’s attitude toward the teen-ager is neces- sarilv ambiguous, however, because it merely reflects our own uncertainty. High school gradu¬ ation, therefore, is comforting to us because it is something definite we can point to, a positive in¬ dication that we are reaching adulthood. Though we cannot determine exactly what we are as Wellesley High School graduates, there are certain assumptions that can hopefully be made about us, probable results of more than a decade of education. Presumably we have learned to rea¬ son and to think for ourselves, and we have ac¬ cumulated a considerable amount of knowledge. It is unlikely, however, that with what we have learned so far we should undertake to save the world or amass a fortune. Indeed, the chief end of our “wealth” of knowledge should be to realize that we know virtuallv nothing. Though we shouldn’t think and act like the children we are not, neither should we assume a wisdom we do not have. We must try to recog¬ nize and restrict ourselves to the limitations of that somewhat amorphous period of our growth called adolescence. EDITOR’S MESSAGE John Altman, Editor-in-Chief 113 CHARLENE D. ZINCK 157 We came back to school still thinking of summer, giving ourselves only regretfully to fall 158 Yet involvement crept up, and we were suddenly and madly involved in Senior Year We took our Boards, bad interviews, made applications We were totally baffled, by the beautiful maze of the new buildings, and left aghast by IBM schedule cards Grad¬ uation was a myth of gown measurements and pictures but so terribly far away 159 The winter came with aching cold The gym was humid at the Friday night basketball game, the windows were all clouded over. Our 160 last exams finally passed. The par- dox of time clasped our year-sweeping it swiftly from us while dragging it tauntingly along. One day the air seemedspecially fresh and warm. The next day snow drove April thoughts away But Spring did come. It was convertibles 162 blaring, acceptances and rejections, puddles and open windows Spring was a sudden gasp and then- graduation. 164 Mr. Scannell and Mr. McEachern, Custodians 165 INDEX A Cappella, 49 Activities, 36 f Administration, 8 Ambassadors, 47 American Field Service, 58 Art Faculty, 18 Assembly Choir, 51 Baseball, 94 Basketball, Boys, 80 Basketball, Girls, 82 Bradford , 43 Business Faculty, 19 Cafeteria Staff, 20 Chamber Choir, 52 Cheerleaders, 72 Chess Club, 56 Chorus, Girls 50 Circulo Italiano, 56 Classical League, 53 Color Guard, 73 Concert Band, 45 Cross Country, 79 Debating Club, 55 Dedication, 4 Drama Club, 57 Editor ' s Message, 112 English Faculty, 12 Faculty, 10 f Field Hockey, 78 Football, 68 f Future Teachers, 59 Glee Club, 48 Golf, 98 Guidance, 9 Gym Show, 86 Gym Team, Boys, 84 Gym Team, Girls, 85 Health Department, 19 History Faculty, 14 History Forum, 55 Hockey, 88 Homemaking Faculty, 18 Industrial Arts Faculty, 18 junior Prom, 108 juniors, 30 f Rev Club, 41 Lacrosse, 99 Language Faculty, 15 Madrigal, 52 Marching Band, 74 Mathematics Faculty, 17 Music, 45 f Music Faculty, 18 National Honor Society, 60 Opening Exercises, 53 Orchestra, 46 Pep Club, 75 Physical Education Faculty 19 Principal’s Message, 5 Red Cross, 54 Science Faculty, 16 Science Fair, 62 Science Quiz Team, 65 Senior Council, 105 Senior Officers, 104 Senior Play, 106 Seniors, 114 f Senior Superlatives, 110 Ski Club, 91 Ski Team, 90 Smoking Council, 40 Soccer, 76 Sophomores, 24 f Sports, 66 Spring Track, 96 Student Council, 38 Stylus, 44 Swimming, Boys, 92 Tennis, Boys, 100 Tennis, Girls, 101 Track, 96 Twirlers, 73 Wellesleyatt Staff, 113 Wisewell Science Club, 64 Woodwind Trio, 47 Wrestling, 83 Youth-imGovernment, 42 167 Life is Short Art Long Occasion Instant Experiment Perilous Decision Difficult Hippocrates 168
