A few weeks? A few days? Last September we had been students for thousands of years and were going to be stu¬ dents forever, but suddenly the proctor has left the room. To¬ morrow is today, filled with new freedom and responsibility. In the flicker of the present should we not glance back to see exact¬ ly where we have spent the short eternity of our high school years? WELLESLEY FREE LIBRARY WELLESLEY MASS. SAMUEL M. GRAVES, Principal ! 4 In the years to come, may the pages of your yearbook bring back memories of your high school years. For each of you there have been hopes and fears, joys and heartaches, triumphs and defeats; but through it all, you have been attaining the stature of young men and young women. May all the lessons learned sustain you as you take your place in the world of further study, at work , or in the armed forces of your country. May you live each day with humility , kindness, and understanding. May God bless you all! 1964 Samuel M. Graves 5 FACULTY STUDENTS ■ P AUTUMN 6 WRIT TH t ; 4 □ 1 ' arJiW « v SPRING 7 JOHN B. CHAFFEE Superintendent of Schools ADMINISTRATION BEDROS KAMITIAN Administrative Assistant JAMES T. LAPE Assistant Principal Students in Wellesley are fortunate in being directed by men who believe not in discipline for its own sake, but in the healthy climate of order which fosters a sense of responsibility without stifl¬ ing originality. The School Board and Mr. Chaffee strive constantly to maintain the excellence of the high school plant with such additions as the new cafeteria and classroom wing to be completed in the fall of 1964. To Mr. Graves, Mr. Lape, and Mr. Kamitian we owe not only forceful direction of each day ' s program, but also a kindness and an un¬ derstanding upon which no price may be set. SAMUEL M. No guidance department can possibly dictate the One and Only Safe and Easy Way, but counselors as sympathetic as Mr. Spang, Miss Craig, Mr. Mazukina, and Miss Capitell can at least point in the right direction. Because of their ex¬ perience and their advice we can change our small sphere for a larger one without unnecessarily bruising our foolishly tender hearts. MRS. June is far away. There is time for nothing; the stream will freeze soon. December is just around the corner. The teams must practice and play, clubs must be reorganized, friend¬ ships renewed. What stands out from the col lage? The hot days of the famous drought? Our midget earthquake? Senior pic¬ tures taken, retaken, retaken . . .? Interviews and sweaty hands? The grim mummery of the assassination of a Presi¬ dent? Whatever autumn was, let us fix it or bottle it or somehow preserve it in pictures and words, beyond the reach of time. 34 SOCCER Wellesley ' s soccer team began the year in fine style with a total of six wins, two ties, and only three losses. Coached by Mr. Dodge and captained by Tom Dal¬ ton and Dick Amesbury, this year ' s team exhibited strong de¬ fense by halfbacks Pete Alderman, Todd Smith, and Dan Cashman, and by fullbacks Bob Griffin and John Yahres. FrontlinersTom Dal¬ ton, Dick Amesbury, Phil Booni- sar, Louie Corticelli, and Dan Ly¬ man, with goalie Rick Kent, com¬ pleted the starting line. Captain Lucia Olsson and Co- Captain Rita Rotka led the procession and laid plans to march with the -band in the spring on Memorial Day. 41 The marching band has much improved over the last two years; Wellesley seldom loses the battle of the bands at football games. Mr. Davis and Mr. Marchant worked hard and well, drilling the band several afternoons a week and devising new, colorful formations. MARCHING BAND 42 PEP CLUB Autumn rallies were primarily in the hands of the Pep Club, composed of one hundred and twen¬ ty-five members headed by Judy Winn and Wendy Callahan and sponsored by Mr. Burgess. In a whole-hearted effort to demonstrate the school’s support for its teams, the- Pep Club organized the Natick and Milton Rallies, as well as the Needham Rally which was cancelled by rhe death of Presi¬ dent Kennedy. Vigorous attendance at football and basketball games rounded out the club’s projected plans. Particularly enthusiastic and helpful were sophomores Maureen Kelley and Nancy Lofgren, juniors Donna O’Hara and Pat Gorgone, and sen¬ iors Judy Shaw and Vicki Edmonds. From early September the Red Raiders spent long hours on the practice field under the acute coaching of Mr. Certuse and Mr. Kerivan. Co-captain- ed by Ned Doyle and Dave Burtt, the team began the season by routing Natick by a score of thirty-two to eight. High scorers Eddie O ' Neil and Tom Wales and an ex¬ cellent defensive play in clutch times con¬ tributed to a strong season record of four victories, three losses (one in a non-league game against Newton South), and one tie, the traditional Thanksgiving Day Game against Needham. A well-balanced team contributed much to Wellesley’s success. Mike Crowe and Bill Oberdick were de¬ fensive specialists. The season’s starting lineup included center Frank Edmands, guards Dave Burtt and Pete Spears, tackles Lou Santospago and Ned Doyle, ends Bob Nurczynski and Tom Pawlina, quarter¬ backs John Ciesluk and Chuck Gubellini, halfbacks Tom Wales and Eddie O’Neil, and fullback Rick Stratton. All of a sudden it was nearly dark when the four-thirty bus was load¬ ing. The afternoons and the weeks were shorter. December Col¬ lege Boards were hardly over before it was t ime to mail the applications for January. Music program, Christmas cotillion, and Christmas itself slipped by before we knew that they were upon us. January was all term papers and midyears — then sud¬ denly term reports were out. We’d gone halfway without know¬ ing it. There’s so little time in midpassage. 50 n j l j v 4 l Chuck Wiggin, President STUDENT COUNCIL With the constant growth of Wellesley High School in the past few years, the Student Council became so large that the transaction of business was impeded. Finally, in 1963 the organization of the Council was radically re¬ vised. A new constitution established a smaller council of thirty-two members: a president, a recording secretary, and ten members at large from each class. Ellie May, Recording Secretary, and voted most versatile girl. Vicky from Greece An auxiliary Homeroom Council composed of all homeroom chairmen and the officers of each class was instituted in order to maintain contact with individual students and to facilitate projects requiring a person in each homeroom. President Chuck Wiggin kept this year’s Student Council busy with the season ticket drive, the welcoming assembly for sophomores, the Kickoff Dance, class elections, a civil rights essay contest, the United Fund drive, the Mor¬ gan Memorial drive, the Homecoming Dance, the Jewish War Veterans election, a survey of students ' summer activities for the Wellesley Community Chest, and the Youth-in-Govem- ment Day elections in January. Council mem¬ bers set to work well before midwinter vaca¬ tion to make plans for the Variety Show, the Gym Show, and a Student Council banquet. Two of the year ' s major projects were the for¬ mation of a girls ' swimming team and the in¬ vestigation of the possibility of new bleachers for the football field. The council met monthly in the fall during Monday assembly periods and bimonthly or as need¬ ed in the spring. Members were respon¬ sible not only for the sale of senior play tickets, but also for the organization of a jazz festival, a cheerleading competition, the senior-faculty basketball game, the sen¬ ior prom, and tne senior banquet. Hotly debated since its in¬ ception in 1961, the Council was ap¬ proved by a school-wide referendum in 1963. Tne Council is in no sense a student court, for punishment of smok¬ ing still lies in the hands of the ad¬ ministration. Nevertheless, Chairman Richard Stratton and the other mem¬ bers of this year ' s council have done much to curtail illegal smoking in the building. Smoking Council: First Row: N. Napoleone, M. Each student chosen by school-wide election serves one day in a town office and thus learns the responsibilities of the post to which he has been elected. At a banquet for all student officials, the Exchange Club awards prizes in the campaign post¬ er competition and announces the Youth-in-Govem- ment Essay Contest winners, who receive a three- day trip to Washington, D.C. During the fall Key Club members were in charge of the scoreboard and concession stand at foot¬ ball games. In collaboration with the Jun¬ ior Red Cross, the Key Club provided bi¬ weekly parties for Wellesley ' s retarded chil¬ dren and organized Christmas and Easter parties at a Roxbury settlement house. In addition to contributing much-needed ath¬ letic equipment to the Hillside Home for Boys, club members organized a Key Club Dance on Februrary 29. DISCUSSION Debating Club — First Row: S. Clapp, D. Blackstone, K. Evans. Second Row: S. Dag¬ gett, J. Zaragoza, J. Fitzpatrick, R. Scott, J. McCaffrey, Mr. Shepard. 1963-64 marked the beginning of Wellesley High ' s participation in the Greater Boston League of Debators. During the course of the year each member of the Debating Club participated in at least one of the eleven scheduled interscholastic debates. Club officers Daniel Blackstone, Bill Fitz¬ patrick, Sue Clapp, and Kathy Evans were among the most active aebators. Mr. Shepard coached this year ' s team. Organized for the relief of scholastic tension and offering the relaxation that formal debate does not provide, the History Forum, moderated by Mr. Bur¬ gess, found an enthusiastic following in the High School this year. Hank Kelsh and his consistently conservative dissension marked the club as a strong¬ hold against more liberal organization of the school. History Forum — K. Larsen, M. Lambert, C. Fager, M. During one study period a week each FT A member visited a nearby elementary school to observe classroom procedure and to teach. The group also laid plans to attend the state convention in March and to go on a field trip to the elementary schools of a near¬ by town. 61 JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross is dedicated to service to the community. This year’s group, sponsored by Miss Hickey and headed by Sue Connolly and Nan¬ cy Talbot, not only conducted the Red Cross en¬ rollment and paperback book drives, but also as¬ sisted the Key Club in wrapping presents for the Christmas party at the Cooper Settlement House in Boston. In addition, at least once a month the Key Club and Junior Red Cross provided Saturday morning games and entertainment for the mentally retarded children at the Fiske and Phillips schools. Although Wellesley complied with the Supreme Courts banish¬ ment of Bible reading and prayer from the public schools, the De- votionals Committee, sponsored by Miss Teed and headed by Ann Wallace, continued to conduct opening exercises. Committee members attempted to provide food for thought by presenting each morning a brief musical se¬ lection, a secular reading, and a moment for silent meditation. 64 Jack Pyle, Randy Scott, the Two Strangers 65 Madrigal — F. Daly, J. Arsen¬ ault, W. Lowther. Senior Girls Ensemble The madrigal singers were organized this year under the sponsorship of Mr. Landry in order to provide an opportunity for a small mixed chorus to sing both sacred and secular music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Dru Crigler and Paul Machlin were this year ' s represent¬ atives to the Music Board. In two practice sessions a week, the group prepared to par¬ ticipate in the Solo and Ensemble Festival sponsored by Boston University. One of the club ' s principal concerns was the prep¬ aration of a Bach motet for performance Senior Girls’ Ensemble—S. Mc- Innemey, S. Clapp, L. Fumia, H. Barannik, M. Dale, V. Jones, J. Bing. This year Mr. Chase directed a Glee Club composed of about one hundred sing¬ ers accompanied by Gordon Saunders and Sue Charow. Representatives to the Music Board were Bill Daly and Sue Woodruff. In addition to recording a Thanksgiving program and ' performing at the Christmas Assembly, club members laid tentative plans for a spring concert with Brookline similar to last May’s combined performance with Newton of Schuberts Mass in G Maj¬ or. During the spring the Glee Club spent considerable time on a dramatized cantata in which John Railsback, Bob O’Malley, Alex Achmat, Ken Bloctt, John King, and Eric Gulbrandsen were notable solists. Sue Burr was responsible for the or¬ ganization of the eight-member sing group known as the Haymakers (a name, the girls say, chosen for the lack of anything better). The Haymakers are new but act- tive; during the year they sang at the Christmas Assembly, the AFS Christmas Party, the Ski Club Dance, and the West¬ on High School Hootenany. In addition, the girls planned to sing at the Variety Show. 68 MUSIC A Cappella in rehearsal In addition to many other singing groups, Mr. Landry directed the Girls ' Chorus, whose officers this year were Liz Pippitt, Nancy Nichols, and Sibyl Mac- Innemey. In two practice periods a week members studied some theory and prepared to participate in the Christmas and Spring Assemblies. Section leaders of Mr. Landry ' s A Cap- pella Group were Lisa Benedict, Martha Rainey, John Railsback, and George Smith. Lisa Benedict and John Railsback were also representatives to the Music Board. A Cap- pella not only participated in the Christmas Assembly and planned to perform at grad¬ uation, but also prepared a thirty-minute program of secular and sacred music for the All State Conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Music Educators ' Associ¬ ation at New Bedford on April 11. This year the fifteen-member Assembly Choir rehearsed every Wednesday after¬ noon under the direction of Mr. Landry. Self-limited almost entirely to sacred music, the choir sang at the National Honor So¬ ciety Induction and prepared an engage¬ ment at the Rotary Club on March 24. 69 SKI TEAM This year’s Ski Team, spon¬ sored by Mr. Lorett and headed by Martin Zeller, Jeff Marshall, Martha White, and Ann Wallace, have been somewhat frustrated by a lack of snow; two of the boys’ meets and one of the girls’ meets had to be canceled. Nonetheless, the boys won both the slalom and the giant slalom at the Nashua High Meet at Mount Ascutney, and they are confident of success at Proctor and New Hampton. Both teams are looking forward to competition with Bennington High, Bennington Catholic High, and the Cambridge School of Weston. First Row: J. Rhome, D. Thompson, S. Armstrong, P. Johnson, D. Of¬ ficers Chip Fossett, Heidi Ulbrich, and Sallv Pope sponsored not only the Ski Club Dance in October but also ski week¬ ends whenever the supply of snow and of interested students so warranted. Members went to Cranmore, New Hampshire, on January 4, and to Belnap-Gunstock, New Hampshire, on January 31. The club also laid plans for both a four-day trip to Con¬ way, New Hampshire, during winter va¬ cation and several trips to Mt. Snow, Vermont. First Row: E. Gulbrandsen, R. Stanwood, R. Scott, P. Team mem¬ bers were confident of success both in the Needham match, which would decide the Bay State title, and in the State Meet, to be held at Wellesley. In addition to Rick Stratton and Ken Hurley, seniors Mike Crowe, Jim Var- nado, Amie Devlin, and Dave Darling¬ ton have formed the backbone of this year’s team. Next year’s prospects seem bright, for returning juniors Steve Wood Albey Dunn, Dick Low and Gene Paltrineri have shown great promise. WRESTLING First Row: S. Wood, J. Varnado, A. Devlin, A. Dunn, R. Last year ' s team held both the state and New England champion¬ ships. Miss Morton coached this year ' s team, cap¬ tained by Vicky Edmonds and Jacki Chevone. Team members hope to live up to Wellesley ' s reputation in the six events in girls ' competition: side horse vaulting, floor exercises, and work on the balance beam, uneven parallel bars, and trampoline. 75 GYM SHOW 76 On April 3 and 4, Wellesley High School presented its twenty-fourth an¬ nual gym show in the school auditor¬ ium. As in preceding years, the show was a joint production of the boys ' and girls ' athletic squads, the student council, and the music department. In spite of a slow start, the ticket drive ended in a sellout. The show includ¬ ed standard gymnastic events, girls ' modem dances, the popular bamboo dance, boys ' triple balancing, pyra¬ mids, and tableaux. 77 4 SWIMMING Captains Dick Amesbury and John Hoppock led this year ' s Swimming Team, coached by Mr. Mear, to a final League record of eight victories and one loss. Beat¬ ing a strong Brookline team in the last meet to gain a tie for the league champion¬ ship, the team had its eyes on first place in both the Eastern Massachusetts State Meet on February 22 and the Massachusetts State Meet on February 29. Senior John Hoppock, the 1963 State Champion in the 50-vard freestyle, holds school records in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle, and the 100 yard butterfly. Other holders of school records are Dick Ames¬ bury, A1 Edmunds, Carl Penndorf, and Bill Dugan. First Raw: D. Withers, A. Ed¬ munds, R. Thurrell, R. Ames¬ bury, cocaptain, J. Hoppock, co captain, C. On Feb¬ ruary 8 the team began the Bay State League Tournament against Needham, Norwood, and Walpole in hopes of qualifying for the State Tournament. Much of Wellesley ' s strength lay in its first two lines composed of Ned Doyle, Ted Allison, Ed O ' Neil, Dan Lyman, John Maples, and Bill Carlson. 81 BASKETBALL First Row: A. Neher, P. Boonisar, R. Pete Alderman and Bob Griffin captained this years Basketball Team, coached by Merrill Berg¬ strom. Although plagued throughout the year by injuries, Wellesley s team managed an exciting and successful season. Phil Boonisar and Bob Griffin were the heroes of the double overtime against Framingham North in the second conflict. Welles¬ ley lost to Natick in the first conflict by the unus¬ ually high score of 94 to 91. Paul Cremonini and John Freeman rescued the Raiders from several dangerous situations with their skillful shooting and dribbling. SPRING ; vm u$TJ ' ft ' ♦‘VVT v ,N v Y ' ;-•,. Spring is the soggy season when flowers grow where they shouldn ' t, the afternoons grow longer, and the snowpile out by Washington Street begins to melt. College Boards; the Science Fair, and the Gym Show appear on the horizon, and parts of the yearbook go to press even before some spring sports begin their seasons. Our teachers and our classmates have become such fixed parts of our lives that we can hardly believe there are only a few months left. Even before one year has gone, we must think of the next. We see in part; what seems complete is never so. Mi ORCHESTRA Mr. Davis conducted this year ' s orchestra, which prepared in week¬ ly practice sessions for appearances at many assemblies throughout the year and at the Christmas Assem¬ bly and Spring Concert. With a new technique of breaking into sections the orchestra saves many hours of practicing and enables the body to branch out and try new music. Happily for assembly-goers the repertoire has in this way grown. Lisa Durrell and Dave Gill are representatives to the Music Board. Orchestra — Front Semi circle: J. Perry, D. Christainsen, S. CONCERT BAND Assisted by student teacher Pe¬ ter Levin from Boston University, Mr. Davis directed Wellesley ' s concert band of ninety-three mem¬ bers. This year s officers were Greg Varo, Stuart Armstrong, Joanna Curry, and Doug Purcell. In ad¬ dition to a Band Assembly in Feb¬ ruary and an evening concert in March, band members were look¬ ing forward to the Southeast Dis¬ trict Music Festival at Norton, Massachusetts, in May. Hopes were also high for attendance at the All State Music Festival at New Bedford on April 10. 89 AMBASSADORS Ambassadors: First Row: P. Beuttel, C. Morris, E. Childs, F, Villa, P. Fitzgerald, I. In addi¬ tion to bimonthly meetings usually followed by a brief slide lecture given by a returned AFS traveler, this years club participated eagerly in the annual Christinas party, to which foreign students living in nearby towns were invited, and in the midwinter party on February 1. Other club activities were the Tag Days in November and April and the annual AFS Assembly for the jun¬ ior and sophomore classes. The three fore¬ ign students at Wellesley during 1963-64 were Vassiliki Dimitrakopoulou from Greece, Goran Norbladh from Sweden, and Eli Noam from Germany. Under the AFS program Wellesley sent Jon Perry to France during the summer of 1963 and An¬ drea Bertocci and Andrew Gill to Germany and Belgium during the school year. Goran Nordbladh, from Sweden 95 Mr. Graves awarded certificates and pins to newly-elected members of the Wellesley High Chapter of the National Honor Society at the annual induction ceremony on Wednes¬ day evening, December 11, 1963. After a speech by Dr. Rice of the Wellesley Unitarian Church, refreshments were served in the cafeteria. This years society, sponsored by Mr. Lund- gren and headed by President John Hoppoek and Secretary Lisa Durrell, numbered fifty- three seniors and twenty-three juniors. By means of brownie sales in the cafeteria the society continued its support of its Greek foster child, Despina Kourti. On February 1, 1964, Mr. Lundgren accompanied delegates Ellen Marram and Sue Arnold to the National Honor Society Convention at Natick High School. National Honor Society: First Row: S. Young, B. Al¬ though there were only eighty ex¬ hibits, considerably fewer than in previous years because of a change in requirements for entering, the fair was enjoyed by participants and visitors alike. Chuck Wiggin won first place in physics for his work with a gas laser; Robert Thurrell’s project on electrophore¬ sis carried off top honors in chem¬ istry. First place in biology went to John MacDonalds environ¬ mental suspension system. 100 101 SPRING TRACK Graduated seniors Joel Martin and Bill Edgerton captained last year ' s spring track squad, coached by Mr. St. Cyr. Three team members placed in the conference meet, and Captain Ed¬ gerton captured a first in the state com¬ petition. This year ' s team has the bene¬ fit of a new pole vault runway and pit and of a new high jump approach; members are confident of repeating last year ' s success. First Row: B. Mills, S. Angelini, J. With Mrs. Worgan as coach, Welle¬ sley ' s Varsity and Junior Varsity Lacrosse teams start practicing early in the spring and play until the end of May. Last year ' s players captained by graduated seniors Sue McGuane and Bambi Chu, played a total of six games, primarily with private schools since few public schools in this area include lacrosse in their sports programs. With the help of seniors Martha Sallinger, Betsy Johnson, Sandy Dale, Nancy Heinbaugh, and Ginny Jones, the team can expect an exciting and successful season in 1964. 103 In tennis, Wellesley always has an enviable reputation. Last year’s team, coached by Mr. An¬ drew and captained by Nat West, triumphed over Braintree, Framingham, Milton, Natick, Needham, Norwood, and Wal¬ pole for an undefeated season in the Bay State League and a final record of fourteen victor¬ ies, no ties, and no losses. The 1964 team is understandably confident of success in the spring. BOYS’ TENNIS Mr, Andrew, W. Fager. C. Grinnell, E. Childs, W. Low- ther, S. Wood. 104 First Raw: K. Bustin, K. Hoffman, D. Hoffman. Second Row: B. Tilley, A. Polimeno, L. McFarlin, C. Martel. GIRL S’TENNIS Betsy Tilley, voted best looking girl The record of last year ' s Girls ' Tennis Team augurs well for 1964. With Miss Morton as coach, the players brought in a final record of five victories and two losses in league games with Needham, Framingham, Braintree, Norwood, Natick, Dedham, and Walpole. This year ' s team looks forward to an equally good season. GOLF Wellesley ' s 1963 Golf Team finished second in the Bay State League with six wins, one loss, and one tie in games aganist Brain¬ tree, Framingham, Natick, Wal- C Dle, Norwood, Needham, Ded¬ am, and Milton. Although last year ' s team was made up almost entirely of seniors, Mr. Burgess and members of the 1964 squad are hopeful of continued success this year. R. Sykes, R. Scott, W. The 1964 team is confident of equaling or bettering that record. 109 SENIORS It ' s been a long twelve years, almost surely the longest of our lives. The high school u ill be empty when we ' v e left — not completely, of course, and not for long. It will be filled next September, atid the September after that, and the September after that, but for us it will be largely empty of familiar faces and therefore foreign, a strange place we ' ll visit next Christmas to see our teach¬ ers once again. Yes. the high school will be empty when we’ve left. On December 19, 1963, the senior class pre¬ sented Thronton Wilders comic allegory, The Skin of Our Teeth. A large cast directed by Mr. Fitzsimmons with principal roles played by Lynda Fumia, Richard Bachmann, Sybil Mclnnerney, Andrea Bernstein, and Lee Brown, ably fronted in a single evening the perils of a large audience, an ice age, and Noah s Flood. In spite of double casting and the difficulty of assembling the entire cast for full rehearsals, the actors succeeded in pro¬ jecting both the surface comedy and the essential significance of the play. In addition to members of the cast, Robert Bouvier, Joanne Abbey, and all others who worked on scenery, properties, make¬ up, costumes, or publicity deserve to be congratu¬ lated on a memorable production. 114 Mrs. Warshaw prepares Linda Fumia JUNIOR PROM The 1963 Junior Prom took place on the “Twel¬ fth of Never ' in an atmosphere of blue and green nylon nets, pastel trees, and decorators ' scaffolding. Perhaps school has not yet worn the more assiduous students down to a 119 dull stub, or perhaps a winter wind has forgotten they are there and chills them and the ground as well. I do not shrink from this responsibility — I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it — and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.
