Samuel M. Graves, Principal PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE You, the members of the Class of 1963, hold the unique position of being the first generation whose en¬ tire lives will be lived in the Atomic Age. It was an older generation that ushered in this fearful power that can be a force either to destroy or to bless mankind. It is entirely possible that the answer as to which it will be, will come within your lifetime. You must never forget that what happens in the years to come will depend upon the collective judgment of your generation and of those immediately ahead. May you live each day with humility, kindness, and understanding. In this approach lie peace and security for you and for all mankind. 4

EDITOR ' S MESSAGE Of the last twenty magazines that you have read, how many have featured articles on today’s youth? A few? Several? Perhaps a majority? Then guessing about a random twenty, you may pos¬ sibly observe that themes have varied from youth’s fads and fan¬ cies to youth’s morals and respon¬ sibilities. To us, the youthful readers, it has been somewhat dis¬ turbing to note that many articles Sue Foote, Senior Editor; Charlie Loutrel, Business Manager; Andy Lee, Editor-in-Chief; Richard Brown, Layout Editor; Peggy Gilmore, Copy Editor; not present, Skip Yurkanin, Art Editor. Andy Lee, Editor-in-Chief appear to have been written with overtones of scorn, as if the authors were writing about us with tongue in cheek. What many of our critics fail to realize is that we take ourselves seriously. We do not pretend omnis¬ cience, and we fully understand the necessity of having teachers. We recognize that because of their present superior wealth of knowledge, teachers teach, and we study. But in our own considered opinions, we are capable of almost anything. Wellesley’s proof of teen¬ agers’ self-governing abilities is evident in the success of our Student Council, in the establishment of a Smok¬ ing Council, and in the advent of honor studies for a select few. We are fortunate in having a superior and progressive administration which is willing to place such confidence in our judgment. Hopefully, we are proving ourselves worthy of their trust. But time will not wait for us if we stand still. We must retain the word progressive as applied to Wellesley’s educational system and initiate a school-wide honor system. In doing so, we free our valuable teachers from the time-wasting and unnecessary duty of proctoring tests and study periods. By studying under a school¬ wide honor system, we as students can gain further experience in self-discipline. In doing so, we provide for ourselves another step towards the best possible education. The matter is now out of the hands of the graduating class. But should the underclassmen and administration accept the challenge, we will have taken an important step in improving education for Wellesley’s youth. 5
