As never before, however, has this been as true as it is today when the world you are inheriting from the older generation is so pitifully divided against itself. As you take your “steps forward”, may you realize that the mighty struggle now going on between the Free World on the one hand and that enslaved behind the Iron Curtain on the other must indeed be settled in your lifetime. Your parents, teachers, and friends all hope and pray that you will at all times be true to the high ideals of our country’s forefathers and meet the challenges of the coming days and years with the fortitude and faith of that little band of settlers who founded the great new world. May your “steps forward” be firmly planted on the solid foundation of faith in God without whose help little truly great can ever be accomplished. With His help you cannot fail. Samuel M. Graves 6 EDITOR S MESSAGE “The nation that has the schools has the future”. . . Bismark On a different level, the student who has attended the school has the future. We, the 1962 graduating class of the Gamaliel Bradford Senior High School, have been privileged to attend a fine school. A high school is many things. It is the ink, paper, chalk, slate, steel, wood, ceramics and cement that comprise the physical plant and the tools with which we work. It is the accumulated learning of Western Civilization which has been recorded in print for our perus¬ al. It is the scholastic excellence of the faculty which enables them to stimulate us intellectually. It is the development of minds in the classroom, bodies on the playing field and in the gymnasium, special skills in the workrooms, and character through participation in all these activities. For the student, high school is a bustling place where friendships prosper, memories accumulate, muscles coordinate, intellectual ap¬ petites increase, and each day’s challenge is the next day’s achieve¬ ment. Above all, the high school is an expression of this community’s faith in its young people; faith that manifests itself in buildings, books, and teachers’ salaries, in public service by the members of the school committee, and in the general interest of the town’s citi¬ zens in providing good schools. For this high school we give thanks. It has provided us with a firm educational foundation, a foundation which will enable us to step forward into the future with confidence. Chaffee Superintendent of Schools To obtain a capable administration is no easy task. It takes knowledge, experience, and dedication to guide and advise high school students. We are most fortunate to have Mr. John Chaffee, Mr. Samuel Graves, Mr. James Lape, and Mr. Bedros Kamitian as our guides and advisers. Through their wisdom and experience, Mr. Chaffee, our Superintendent of Schools, and his able staff have given us the precious opportunity to acquire a truly fine education. Mr. Graves has been not only our Principal but also our friend. As a result of his person¬ al interest in school activities, school personnel, and the student body, he has been able to coordinate all of these so that they function as one. Although this year Mr. Kamitian received a new title, Administra¬ tive Assistant, he was not new to the students, for he had been a teacher at the high school for many years. He has transferred his skill and knowledge gained by teaching to the job of maintaining correct discipline among the students. For all of the tasks that these administrators had to perform, they needed wisdom, patience, and a sense of humor to carry them through the difficult times. Because we have had the advice and understanding of these unusually able administrators, the Class of 1962 is deeply grateful and it steps forward into the future with great confidence. Samuel M. Graves Principal James T. Lape Bedros Kamitian Assistant Principal Administrative Assistant (Leave of Absence—John Hay Fellowship) 8 GUIDANCE Joseph C. Spang Director of Guidance Guidance has become one of the most important as¬ pects of school life. With so many opportunities to fur¬ ther our education and to obtain fine jobs, it is impor¬ tant that each student be shown the correct steps to take into the future. We at Wellesley High School are very fortunate to have a guidance staff with such experience and understanding. It was to these four people, Mr. Spang, Director of Guidance, Miss Craig, our new Dean of Girls, Miss Freitag, Counselor, and Mr. Mazukina, Counselor, that we turned when we needed advice or council about academic, social, or personal problems. That they always found some solution to our problems showed the amount of time and effort they expended upon helping us. Ask bewildered Sophomores how they would have staggered through their first year at the high school without the reassuring pep talks of the guidance counselors. And as Seniors, at the end of our high school career, we are so grateful for the excellent guidance given to us to help us choose our paths into the future. Without these fine people to guide our steps forward, the Class of 1962 never would have been able to look to the fu¬ ture with such assurance. Anna C. Craig Dean of Girls Alfred E. Mazukina Counselor Joyce J. Freitag Counselor 9 FACULTY The faculty played a most important part in direct¬ ing the steps of the Class of 1962 through the high school years. These capable teachers made an earnest attempt to give us the knowledge to light our paths in the future. As the Class of 1962 steps forward, it will be grateful forever to the faculty for their patience with us, their interest in us, and their understanding of us. Robert J. Among the Council’s achievements were the conducting of a very successful United Fund Drive, the proposal for the school to adopt a child through the Foster Parents’ Plan, and the extension of the Honor Study program to the junior class members. Through these and other accomplish¬ ments, the Student Council once again served as a helpful organ of the school. With Mr. Ernest Lorett as adviser and Kris Krall as our capable editor, The Bradford brought in¬ formation and enjoyment to a large number of student subscribers. This year’s innovations included a new entertainment column, eagerly read by book and movie fans, expanded circulation, and increased advertising space. An enthusiastic and hard-working staff pro¬ vided excellent coverage of school and social events, in addition to wit and entertainment. The Tangent is a medium for the publication of literary contributions representing a variety of top¬ ics, attitudes, moods, and styles, without the limitations of extensive editing or revision. Three issues of the Tangent were produced in 1961-1962 under the pene¬ trating critical eye of Editor-in-Chief Trudi Nadas and the cooling influence of Mr. Fitzgibbon, Faculty Adviser. Assistant editors were Gail von der Lippe, John Lewis, Richard Parker, and Richard Brown. Dick puts the finishing touches on the Tangent cover. 32 DEBATING CLUB First Row: Mr. Platine, J. Lewis, D. The Debating Club was organized last year by stu¬ dents who were interested in improving their public speaking. The club usually met once a week under the leadership of David Idell, with Mr. Smith and Mr. Platine as faculty sponsors. Since interest in the club grew steadily, a debating team was formed to debate with other high schools in the Boston area such as Bos¬ ton Latin School and Waltham High School. The team not only was successful in winning but also attracted the student body to the debates. Because the majority of the members were sophomores and juniors, the club seems assured of continuing growth and success. “You don’t say!’’ Fireside chats. 33 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE First Row: S. This year, once again, the American Field Service, as a part of an international program, has sponsored two wonderful foreign students—Inger Schei, who came to us from Norway, and Javed Gul Qazi, who traveled from his native East Paki¬ stan. In July of last summer, the A. F. S. group participated in its annual bus tour weekend by playing host to a busload of foreign student guests. The A. F. With the aid of rabbits’ feet, the 1961 Red Raiders swept undefeated through their nine-game season. Led by their powerful line, perhaps the best in the state, and supported by a bruising backfield, the Raiders’ at¬ tack, averaging over 400 yards per game, outsqored their opponents 206-80. Combining a dynamic offense with a stalwart defense, Wellesley overwhelmed such opponents as Natick, 18-12; Norwood, 30-12; Hing- ham, 40-24; Walpole, 26-0; and our traditional rival, Needham, 24-0. In the post-season polls, Wellesley captured all Bay State honors, placing the following players on the official Bay State All Star Team: center, George Bruns; guards, Mike Lonergan and Craig Evans; tackles, Mike Mastro and Andy McNeil; end, Joe Pignatiello; quarterback, Bob MacBey; fullback, Another Needham player bites the dust. 56 JUNIOR VARSITY First Row: D. Soccer proved to be a very popular sport again this year when many boys appeared on the field for try¬ outs. Captained by J. A. Metzler, the team practiced every fall afternoon under the direction of their coach, Mr. Dodge, who is new to Wellesley High School this year. Soccer games were held after school in the after¬ noon. Although the season got off to an excellent start, it did not fulfill its original promise, and the team had a record of five wins and six losses. Of all the team members, Pete Penndorf was the highest scorer. The final game, played against Needham, was a particu¬ larly exciting one which ran into extra time and re¬ sulted in a very close score, as the Wellesley team lost to Needham by a single point. 60 In exactly three milliseconds you will see a demonstration of Newton’s Third Law of Mo¬ tion. Mr. Kjeldsen, coach, and David Norton, this year’s captain, led an outstand¬ ing team to an impressive number of wins. Several underclassmen, including Joel Martin, Artie Devlin, and Bill Edgerton, consistently placed first or second, and, along with the returning lettermen, contributed to this fine record. Near-sighted? 69 WRESTLING TEAM “In two minutes you will be a pretzel!” Joel breaks out. In spite of a slow start, the 1962 Wellesley High School Varsity Wrestling Team made a fine comeback for a very successful season. After having been de¬ feated narrowly by Roxbury Latin School, the team won the match against Weymouth. Mr. Dodge, in his first year as wrestling coach, had a great varsity team, consisting of eleven boys, and combining excellent skill with strength. Several seniors consistently won matches for the squad. These included Andy McNeil, Ken Manning, Pete Benotti, and Roger Bloomfield, all of whom also placed at the A.A.U. meet held in Boston. First Row: A. Devlin, J. Martin, K. Hurley, R. Woltmann, P. Benotti, K. Manning, R. Bloomfield, R. Stratton, D. Claflin, J. MacLeod, A. McNeil. Second Row: Mr. Dodge, P. Esposito, 70 J. Gagnon, G. Williams, B. Stoadley, R. Grainger, P. Cononi, F. Edmands, E. Beal, M. Lonergan, H. Kelsch, R. Simone, G. Murphy, C. Wiggin, J. MacDonald, G. Varo, H. Crawford. GIRLS’ SOFTBALL First Row: J. Russell, A. Wilson, J. Hamilton, A. Isaacson, A. Mitchell, K. O’Har a. Third Row: H. Connors, S. Lower, G. Bedford, S. Bowen, S. Lownds, C. Long. Second Row: S. N. Deane, C. Cogswell, M. McMahon, S. McGuane, S. Furlong. Weaver, C. Connery, M. Thomas, E. Cassoli, C. Fitzgerald, “It’s a bird . . .!” During the spring about sixty girls met one afternoon a week to play intramural softball because there were no league games scheduled. These games, four in num¬ ber, were supervised by Mrs. Wanless. If a girl at¬ tended three or four of the afternoon games, she re¬ ceived intramural credit for the year. The four teams, without much glory or acknowledgment, played hard and well. Whoa there! 71 TRACK First Row: M. Prior, G. Bruns, K. Winn, A. McNeil, L. Palm¬ er, R. Bloomfield, K. Jones, J. Hart. Second Row: Mr. McDer¬ mott, R. Grainger, S. Frazee, K. Manning, E. Rooney, K. Kuske, C. Cossick, B. Gilbert, T. Steeves, J. Davis, R. Viola, Mr. Certuse. “He went that-a-way.” The 1961 Spring Track Team finished this year’s season with an outstanding record of victories. Coached by Mr. Certuse, one of the swiftest teams in many years placed high in the Bay State League, piling up win after win in an exciting season. Many outstanding members of the Class of 1962 participated in this sport, and the team as a whole took part in many excit¬ ing meets with close finishes. What do I do now? 72 GOLF TEAM First Row: P. Yarbrough, V. Juliani, L. Madden, D. Hanlon. Second Row: Mr. Simone, R. O’Brien, R. Gard, J. Hauser, D. Horgan, D. Goodwin, J. Straub, P. Gibson. Mr. Simone demonstrates. With the return of many exceptional golfers, the Golf Team achieved a successful season, winning over half of its matches. Although the boys had little time to practice together and had to rely on their own expe¬ rience, they played excellent matches, each boy com¬ peting in his match with notable precision and sensible play. In the last few years, the Golf Team, under Coach Simone, has grown tremendously, and it is ex¬ pected that over twenty boys will be members again next season. Their skill, spirit, and love for the game are indeed noteworthy and account for the winning season. “Now, all we need is a ball.” 73 BASEBALL First Row: G. Kerivan, R. Rossi, R. Ilg. Second Row: T. O’Keefe, R. Cronin, R. MacBey, Mr. Kerivan. The 1961 Red Raiders compiled one of the best records in the annals of Wellesley High baseball his¬ tory, while winning 13 games and losing 3 over the regular Bay State League season. The Raiders went on to the Eastern Massachusetts Class “A” Tourna¬ ment and set back a strong Durfee High team 7-4; Fairhaven two days later, 6-5; and under a 100 degree sun squeezed home the winning run in the 12th inning to defeat Boston Latin 4-3. In the finals against Brock¬ ton, the once powerful bats of Wellesley were at last silenced, and Brockton emerged victorious 3-0 for the Class “A” championship. “Balance” was the mark of the 1961 Raiders. The brilliant pitching of George Kerivan was supported by A winning catch. Ned Sherry and Jack Andrew. Co-captain Wally Carle- ton, Shaun Fitzmaurice, and Bart Jealous gave Welles¬ ley one of the finest outfields any high school has ever assembled for speed, power, and desire. Wellesley’s infield, sparked by Co-captain Dick Hy¬ son, consisted of Bob Cronin, Bob MacBey, and Bob Rossi. Ray Ilg gave the Red Raiders a stalwart back¬ stop. George Kerivan was the leading pitcher and was named to the All-Scholastic Team. Shaun Fitzmaurice went on to be selected for the Hearst Sand-Lot All Stars to play in Yankee Stadium. After batting .666, including a home run, he was selected as the outstanding high school player in the country. One, two, three, kick! 74 LACROSSE First Row: E. Dyer, S. Kalfon, D. Kryter, S. Chevone, S. Lownds, M. McRann, M. Blinn, A. Hancourt. Boarding house reach. “Take that, and that!’’ Although Lacrosse just recently has been added to our spring sports schedule, over forty girls participated in the many games and play-days. Since all games were coached, the girls were able to increase their skills and techniques. Mrs. Worgan arranged scrim¬ mages with neighboring schools, including Weston, the Cambridge School of Weston, and Winchester, but the teams were composed of girls from both schools in order to distribute the more skilled players. Since the team was so enthusiastic and gained such an active knowledge of the game, it is hoped that many more games can be scheduled for the future. 75 BOYS’ TENNIS First Row: S. Burtt, J. Farnum, B. Blaney. Second Row: N. West, B. Giese, R. Gunwaldsen. D. Woltmann. Where does it hurt most? The Boys’ Tennis Team again completed the season with an undefeated record. In addition, they enjoyed the distinction of never having lost a set in competition with Bay State League teams. For the second straight year, Wellesley was the leader in the Bay State League, and, after winning the Eastern Massachusetts Cham¬ pionship, emerged victorious from the New England competition. Credit should be given to the hard-work¬ ing coach, Mr. Andrew, who so often has led Welles¬ ley’s teams to successful seasons. Ultra-sonic speed. 76 GIRLS’ TENNIS First Row: J. Wood, R. Banay, E. Adams, M. Birkett. Second Row: Miss Copley, K. Sargent, K. Schoepfer, G. von der Lippe, M. Furman, J. Collier, M. Gilmore, K. Goonan. The Girls’ Tennis Team, coached by Miss Copley, finished a most successful season with a 5-2 record, defeating such rivals as Framingham, Natick, Dedham, Braintree, and Norwood. Consistent win¬ ners were Bambi Adams, Karen Sargent, and Judy Wood. The final choice was Ber¬ nard Shaw’s Arms and the Man, which was produced on Saturday, December 9, 1961, at the Senior High School Auditorium. The characters were very well por¬ trayed by Mary Cass as Raina Petkoff, Bonnie Gress as Catherine Petkoff, Sally Sise as Louka, Peter Mear as Captain Bluntshli, John Macredie as a Russian Of¬ ficer, Stephen Burtt as Nicola, Michael Fitzgerald as Major Paul Petkoff, and Roger Bloomfield as Major Sergius Saranoff. The action of this three-act play takes place at Major Petkoff’s home in a small Bul¬ garian town during and after the time of the Bulgarian war with Serbia in 1885. Arms and the Man is a delightful comedy woven around the escape of a Serbian mercenary, Captain Bluntschli—the “chocolate cream soldier,” who would rather fill his pockets with chocolate than with ammu¬ nition during battle. The audience was entirely ab¬ sorbed watching Raina fall in love with Captain Blunt¬ schli, while her betrothed, Major Saranoff, discovered he loved Louka, and Louka loved Major Saranoff in¬ stead of Nicola, her betrothed. The capable direction of Mr. Fitzsimmons and the hard work of all who participated provided a high point of entertainment for the Class of 1962. Rush ’in strategy! It would be easier, Betty, if you took your foot off it! “Mmm, chocolates!” “ Q uick! Alka-Seltzer! ” 87 ELIZABETH GRANGER ADAMS Bambi . . . Enjoys sailing . . . National Honor Society . . . His sensitive nature reached across the foot¬ lights, and he was one with the great and little men of all time. We like to think that Roger has found his place —working under the Master Dramatist whose stage is the world, whose assistants, those who have seen the Light.
