I feel the future in the instant. Macbeth When the Class of 1961 entered high school, we were not very aware of the problems which confront self-sufficient adults. Suddenly, these problems are im¬ minent—the future that was a far horizon is close up¬ on us. We may not realize now that we have less cause to fear the future than many other high school graduates. We are only beginning to appreciate fully the depth and character of our education at Wellesley. As we become adults, our appreciation will deepen and strengthen until the solid background of knowledge we received at Wellesley High will simplify our search for order in the complex world of today and tomorrow. That horizon, now so near, should not appear threat¬ ening; rather it should seem a shining goal we are fi¬ nally about to reach. Our conception of adult responsibilities will gradu¬ ally become more and more pr ofound. We will dis¬ cover, perhaps to our surprise, that what we have gained from Wellesley’s sound educational program is of immeasurable worth in solving the problems which arise in everyday life. At the instant of graduation, the preparations of the past will end, and the opportunities of the future will begin. Jennifer Machlin, Editor-in-Chief Bill Satterthwaite, Business Editor; Kenneth City, Photography Editor; Karen Kline, Art Editor; John Andrew, Photography Editor; Gard Potts, Senior Editor; Gordon Riblet, Sports Editor. 6 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Samuel M. Graves, Principal. As the day comes that brings with it your gradua¬ tion from high school, it is well to pause for a time and remind yourselves of the events that transpired as you moved forward to this climax of your high school ca¬ reer. These pages of your Wellesleyan will help you to recall such events. You must never forget that the lessons of the past are important only if you profit from them in shaping your future. Your past contains its successes and its failures, its joy and its sorrows, its hopes and its fears, its victories and its defeats. All of these have contributed their bit toward making you what you are today. The future lies before you! What you will accom¬ plish depends upon how well you have laid your foun¬ dation for that future. Much more goes into the making of successful men and women than what takes place in school. Your home, your church, and your community have all played an important role in contributing to the strengths and weaknesses that are now a part of you as an individual. How often we hear it said at graduation time that the future is in your hands. From time immemorial, each passing generation has called upon the youth of its time to right the wrongs of their own generation. Your parents, your teachers, and your friends can hope only that in guiding you to this point in your lives they have given you a sense of values which will serve you realistically in the years to come. Your happiness and achievements will be the culmination of their aspira¬ tions for you. You will succeed in the future only if you realize clearly that there is a Power outside your¬ selves without Whose guidance nothing truly great can ever be accomplished. Only as you learn to rely on God can you find the wisdom and strength to meet the prob¬ lems of your future years. With God’s help you will not fail! Goodbye and good luck to all of you. 7 ADMINISTRATION John B. Chafee Superintendent of Schools Katherine Bronson Assistant Principal The entire student body has benefited greatly from the experienced administra¬ tion of Mr. John Chaffee, Mr. Samuel Graves, and Miss Katherine Bronson. Their efforts and advice have guided us in making decisions about every phase of our school life. Through the dedication and wisdom of Mr. Chaffee, our Superintendent of Schools, and his staff, we have been exposed to educational instruction of the high¬ est calibre. As Principal and friend, Mr. Graves has been a familiar figure through¬ out school. From football games, paper drives and P.A. announcements to college recommendations, discipline and personal advice, he has been intimately involved in the smooth operation of all school personnel and activities. Miss Bronson, our Assistant Principal, also has had great influence on our school life. She performed extremely valuable services in scheduling all of our classes, and co-ordinating Student Activities. She also has participated in forming administration policies, and has disciplined wisely and consistently. As Student Council Advisor, she supervised all student conventions, elections, ticket drives and dances, and as Dean of Girls she performed still greater services. In short, our administrators have provided and maintained the core of our high school experiences. The Class of 1961 is greatly indebted to them for their roles in shaping our future. 11 8 I edication Katherine Bronson WELLESLEY HIGH SCHOOL, 1918-1961 Thou wert our guide, philosopher and friend. Alexander Pope 11 GUIDANCE Joseph C. Spang Director of Guidance The Guidance Department, under the direction of Mr. Joseph Spang, has had an effect on the past, pres¬ ent, and future life of every Wellesley Senior. As Sophomores, as Juniors, and as Seniors, the Class of 1961 has sought and found in the Guidance Office solutions to academic, social, and personal problems of many kinds. On innumerable occasions, each of us has taken advantage of the open door policy which the Guidance Office maintains throughout the school year. As newcomers to Wellesley High, we found comfort and direction in the experience and wisdom of the Sophomore Guidance Office, currently headed by Miss Joyce Freitag. Wellesley’s wide range of course choices and levels presented additional problems which fur¬ ther complicated our adjustment to Senior High life. As “adjusted” Juniors, we found guidance and sol¬ Joyce J. Freitag Counselor ace in the offices of Mr. Spang and Miss Anna Craig. Their vast knowledge of course prerequisites, diffi¬ culty, and purpose, and their experience in adminis¬ tering and interpreting ability evaluations have influ¬ enced our growth greatly and directly. As career-panicked Seniors, we have drawn heavily on Guidance Office resources for counsel and sugges¬ tion. The roads away from Wellesley lead in so many different directions that we have been forced to ponder carefully the alternatives of our unlimited futures. Here, again, we have been able to rely upon the com¬ petence of our Guidance Department. Our class and our school would be hard-pressed to find sufficient expressions of thanks for our guidance. The Class of 1961, however, will demonstrate its ap¬ preciation through its future successes. Anna C. Craig Counselor FACULTY The value of any educational system depends ultimately upon the quality and the effectiveness of both the instruction and the instructors. We are fortunate to have a faculty of men and women who are not only capable teachers but also inter¬ ested in providing us with every opportunity to increase our knowledge and explore our potenti¬ alities. The Class of 1961 is indebted to the fac¬ ulty for its vital role in shaping our future. Mrs. Barbara Steeves, Mrs. Lillian Sharon, Mrs. Grace Spita Secretaries Robert J. Aldrich Business Ruth D. With Student Council sponsorship the United Fund and Season Ticket Drives reached new records; the student driving problem was attacked through letters, speakers, and a safe driving code; a school store was approved to sell books and school materials; the Ath¬ letic Award System was revised; and an honor study hall was put into effect. Also, Council members at¬ tended State and National Conventions and served on such community organizations as the PTSA Advisory Council and the Community Chest and Council. Un¬ der Miss Bronson’s guidance and Ted Cornell’s leader¬ ship this year’s Student Council demonstrated that it is the school’s most important student group. “Get them off quick! The Wellesley Council of the American Field Service is one of the most active chapters in the state. This year’s exchange students, Kathleen Goonan of Englan d, and Wilfried Nartus of Belgium, contributed enthusi¬ asm and a fresh approach to our school activities. Under the able leadership of Sue Hervey, last sum¬ mer’s Wellesley High School representative in Den¬ mark, our chapter entertained many foreign students at open houses and on ski weekends. Hard working mem¬ bers earned money to support our local students abroad by selling A. F. S. tags and Christmas cards and by sponsoring lectures by local dignitaries. This year’s Science Fair was a spectacular exhibition of our science studies. Covered by Radio Station WBZ, the Fair was highlighted by a mobile robot, poisonous potatoes, and an erudite white rat. Admitting stiff competition, judges from nearby high schools and industries finally chose the following first place win¬ ners: David Norton in Biology, Steve Loutrel in Physics, and John Hart in Chemistry. No comment. 36 WISEWELL SCIENCE CLUB The Wisewell Science Club is a group of future sci¬ entists and engineers who meet in order to increase their general knowledge of science. Under the guidance of Miss Johnson, this year’s Club invited the student body to several lectures given by noted scientists. Out¬ standing among the speakers were two acoustical engi¬ neers from the Liberty Mutual Research Lab in Hop- kinton, Massachusetts, and the head of the United States Army Research Center in Natick. They also in¬ vited Dr. Charles Williams, an Atomic Energy Com¬ mission consultant, who discussed various phases of atomic research. In addition to lectures, the Club ar¬ ranged field trips and conducted individual experi¬ ments of particular interest to members. In the spring the Club helped the Science Department promote and organize our very successful Science Fair. “Don’t worry. Miss Johnson, I’ve done this before.” First Row: R. Camerini, M. Earle, J. Especially designed and equipped for in¬ dividual aural-oral instruction, this elaborate and intri¬ cate laboratory has added a new dimension to the learning and communication of foreign languages. Not only can students repeat and revise, but they can also listen to their own recording to improve verbal strengths and correct weaknesses. Working in conjunction with the Rally Commit¬ tee and the Twirlers, they helped stir up a roar¬ ing response among the spectators at rallies. The activity of the corps was not limited to half-time entertainment, however. The viva¬ cious girls in their colorful uniforms added to the enthusiasm of the crowd throughout every game. They began practice early in September and worked steadily until the end of the football sea¬ son. Bev led afternoon practices and developed catchy routines. Certainly our football season wouldn’t have been complete without the twirlers. Synchronization? 53 CANDIDS “Hey! A total of eighty boys showed their interest in the sport by taking part in the intramural program. After many afternoons of hard practice, a squad of approximately thirty-six boys was chosen. The team benefitted greatly from the skill of eight of the players who returned from last year’s starting line-up. Halt!” “On your mark . . . get set . . .!” In 1960 the Cross Country Team had its most successful season in three years. Since it was elevated from class “C” to class “B”, it has been facing much tougher competition. Although the Wellesley run¬ ners were up against larger schools, they were able to win two meets. Shaun Fitzmaurice and Alex MacPhail paced the team. Alex, who possesses great endurance, was particularly outstanding as he smashed the old school record. Returning lettermen, tried under the heat of competition, should make next year’s team and record even better, according to Coach Lorett. 59 FIELD HOCKEY Field Hockey has become a very important fall sport at Wellesley High School. Of the 85 eager athletes who participated in the intramural program, 47 were chosen for the Varsity and Junior Varsity Squads. The twelve girls who attended Field Hockey Camp from September 4-11 added enthusiasm to the team. As a result of long, hard practice, both teams enjoyed a most successful and rewarding season. The Varsity Team, coached by Miss Copley, compiled an impres¬ sive 5-2-0 record. The Junior Varsity Squad, coached by Mrs. Wanless, showed great improvement through¬ out the season and finished with a 1-4-2 record. The highlight of the season was at Dedham, where, in a fast-moving and highly competitive game, Wellesley won 2-1. Coach Hines, assisted by Mr. Scanned, shaped the puck- sters into a hard-fighting unit. In one of the most thrilling games of the season against undefeated, League-leading Norwood, Wellesley lost by one point in the last two seconds of the game. Captain Ted Martin netted many of Wellesley’s goals, while Goalie Pat Murphy superbly guarded our nets. The team’s aggressive offensive skating and solid-hitting defensive tactics made it a formidable opponent in the League. Barry scores! Up she goes! Led by Captains Bonnie Peek and Sue Pippitt and under the ex¬ perienced eye of Mrs. Wanless, the Girls’ Basketball Team passed and shot its way to another banner season, beating such formidable foes as Framingham and Natick. The Wellesley hoopsters relied on superior team play to pile up points. The team’s defense was espe¬ cially outstanding and Wellesley continually controlled the boards. The squad was composed largely of Seniors, aided by several under¬ classmen who did more than commendable jobs. Its members having played together for three years, the team functioned like a precision unit, each player performing her job to perfection. BOYS’ BASKETBALL First Row: K. Woodcock, L. Mercer, E. Our Varsity Basketball Team faced strong league competition, but finished the season with a creditable record. Coach Bergstrom’s squad at times played excellent team ball to win over Natick, Ded¬ ham, Milton, and Norwood. The last proved to be the season’s most thrilling encounter, with guard Ned Sherry sinking a foul shot to clinch the game in the final seconds, 67-66. Wellesley played close games against Needham, losing in the second by only three points. Playmaker Shaun Fitzmaurice hit for an average of 15 points, and Lee Mercer at forward also stood out, finishing the year as top scorer. Fine play by Sophomores Ray llg and Bob Rossi indicates a bright future for the Wellesley hoopsters. Full-bodied spirit. 63 Lee drives for two. SKI CLUB First Row: L. Davis, K. Krall, P. Farley, A. This year, under the dynamic leadership of Coach McDermott, the Wellesley wrestlers muscled their way to another outstanding record. Supported by experienced second and third year men, the team dominated its opponents in strength and agility. Opposing formidable teams from Scit- uate to Roxbury, the wrestlers suffered only one loss—Needham. When they represented Welles¬ ley in the post-season State Wrestling Meet, they maintained their hard-earned reputations. The Wellesley club-swingers had a fairly good sea¬ son on the links last year, when they triumphed over their opponents in about one-third of their matches. Although they were often out-distanced by their op¬ ponents when teeing off, they were usually able to “come from behind,” often turning a looming defeat into victory by calling on their resources of cunning and experience. The Coach, Mr. Simone, is anticipat¬ ing a substantial improvement in the team to be fielded this year, for veteran players Bob Harney, Bob Varo, Bob Horgan, and Bob Buxbaum are all returning. “Remember, it’s all in the wrist.” 70 BASEBALL First Row: V. Lanza, N. Sherry, S. Fitzmaurice, B. Jealous. Second Row: L. Cleverly, J. Andrew, R. Cronin, K. Woodcock, G. Kerivan, D. Hyson, W. Satterthwaite. Coach Kerivan’s 1961 entry into the Bay State Confer¬ ence appears to be a formidable one. In spite of tough op¬ position, last year’s Team won seven games led by the clutch pitching of Ken Woodcock and “Gigi” Kerivan, and the lusty hitting of Shaun Fitzmaurice. The many returning reg¬ ulars from this Team should make the upcoming season a success. Returning lettermen in key positions include hard¬ hitting Dick Hyson at second, Bob McBey at short, Shaun Fitzmaurice in center flanked by Bob Cronin and Bart Jeal¬ ous, and at third, Ned Sherry who is returning for his third year of Varsity competition. High and tight. Let’s hope you can unwind yourself, Woody. 71 BOYS’ TENNIS First Row: J. Cockey, W. Giese, A. Lee, J. Farnham, R. Gunwaldsen. Second Row: Mr. Andrew, R. Woltmann, G. Potts, P. Peters, N. West. The 1960 Boys’ Tennis Team enjoyed a completely successful season by compiling an impressive 18-0 rec¬ ord. Eight of the twenty boys who turned out for the sport last spring became regular players. Under the coaching of Mr. Andrew, the Team went on to win the Bay State League Championship and took second place in the New England Competition. Outstanding player Ted Martin was a runner-up in the state-wide individual competition. “Man, like I’m chasing the ball.” “Ouch, I’m stepping on my toe.” 72 GIRLS’ TENNIS “Yikes, that one was a little too close.” “And this is the end you hit the ball with.” Intramural Girls’ Tennis began last fall with individual competition on a tennis ladder. Although the turnout for the fall season was affected by poor weather, approximately 40 girls were out for the spring sessi on. After several weeks of hard-fought competition among themselves, the top 12 of these girls became members of the Varsity squad. Topper Tilley, Sue Haughey and Molly Hartman led our skilled Team to victories over such perennial powers as Norwood, Dedham and Natick. At the close of the season, Coach Cop¬ ley’s Team posted a fine record: 6 wins and 1 loss. S. Vines, K. Schoepfer, B. Danielson, S. Haughey. 73 LACROSSE First Row: B. Deal, A. Gould, D. Phinney, B. Peek, S. Vi- guers, C. Bing, E. Dyer, J. Dailey, C. Anderson. Second Row: J. Machlin, S. Goodwin, L. Wentworth, A. MacFayden, N. Deane, D. Viguers, M. Idell. Third Row: P. Hettrick, E. Brat- tin, B. Gunwaldsen, S. Breck, M. Holden, J. Clymer, C. Clem- ence. Last year there was such an enthusiastic response to the newly-introduced spring sport, Lacrosse, that fifty-one girls participated in the program. Both play¬ ers and coaches took cross in hand to learn this chal¬ lenging game. The girls who played Lacrosse at Hockey Camp added their new knowledge and skill to the inexperienced team. Mrs. Wanless arranged and refereed scrimmages with neighboring schools includ¬ ing Beaver Country Day and Dana Hall. Each team was composed of players from both schools so that the games were played more for experience and enjoyment than for competition. “Wait until that bird goes by.” “Now if only the ball will come down.” High bounce, Susie? 74 CANDIDS The sentinel That’s Needham? Stretch, Denny, stretch! “Now Mr. Haizlip, really!” “Quick, before the cops come!” 75 Ken Woodcock Vice-President Deb Phinney Secretary 78 SENIOR COUNCIL First Row: K. Kline, T. Cornell, S. Abbott, K. Woodcock, Mrs. Boyea, B. Jealous, D. Phinney, S. Bladworth, C. Wilgus. Second Row: T. Martin, C. Collins, S. Hervey, R. Newhall, D. Rol lins, R. Fuchs, G. Potts, J. Gardner, R. Varo, D. Goonan, C. Case, P. Walker, S. Viguers, S. Salatich, W. Carleton. Second Row: P. Benjamin, Mr. Fitzsimmons, Director; P. Sargent, R. Morril. After long weeks of rehearsals, the Senior Class presented The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde. The nine actors, Mr. Fitzsimmons, and the backstage committee members had spent their time and talents well, for the performance was a high point of the school year. The plot concerns two gay blades, their sweet¬ hearts, and a complicated situation which arises from mistaken identity and questionable parent¬ age. John Worthing, played by Wally Carleton, tries unsuccessfully to shield his ward Cecily (Pam Walker) from the attentions of Algernon Mon- crieff (Chris Case). At the same time John, under the name of Earnest, loves Gwendolyn Fairfax, portrayed by Nat Salatich. Naturally Gwendolyn’s aunt, Lady Bracknell (Sue Viguers), objects to the proposed marriages because as an infant, John was found abandoned in a handbag. She finally discovers that John is her sister’s son, that he is Algernon’s brother, and that his name really is Earnest. The supporting actors—Kathy Goonan as Miss Prism, Peter Benjamin as Reverend Chausible, Dick Morril as Merriman, and Peter Sargent as Lane—added polish to a very memorable per¬ formance. “Your eyes are quite, quite blue.” 84 BEING EARNEST “Put’er there, pal!” “Anytime, anytime . . .
