These thoughts may well go back to that September day long ago when you left the security of your home and spent your fmt day in school. From that day to this your educational experiences have been pointed toward graduation from high school. From now on you are going to be more “on your own” than ever before. The real test of what your home, your church, your school, and youj com- munity have meant to you lies ahead. The hopes and prayers of parents, teachers, and schoolmates are with you as you go your several ways. May each of you find success and happiness in your chosen field, continued growth in those characteristics which mark the well-rounded personality, and a genuine appreciation of those qualities which make life worth living. God bless you all! Dick Stimets presents your Yearbook to Mr. Graves. Here is your devoted Art Staff: Gail Constantinides, Nancy Howe, Tamara Col¬ lier, Merrill Crockett, and Sue Gura. 6 As Photography Editor, Rick Howard is always on the lookout for good pictures. EDITOR ' S MESSAGE Living in the world of 1960 man is experiencing the most dynamic period in all history. He has made more progress in the last sixty years than in the sixty centuries since the dawn of civilization. Yet this incredible prog¬ ress has produced problems never before encountered. A tremendous population explosion is imminent; the earth’s resources are being exhausted at an ever-increas¬ ing rate. Most formidable of all is the fact that man now for the first time has the power to destroy himself and his civilization, to reduce to nothing in a few short hours what it has taken milleniums to build. Faced with such overwhelming problems it is natural for many to say, “How 1 wish I were living one hundred years ago. Then there were no terrible world wars, no atomic bombs, no threat of extinction. The world was serene and secure.” As you, the members of the Class of I960 set out on your separate ways, you likely experience a similar feel¬ ing of nostalgia. You wish that you could return to your childhood days when you led a guided life and had few cares or worries. But this would surely be a backward step, for true development can never result from ignor¬ ance and isolation. Man is now on the threshold of truly wonderful achievement. Harnessed atomic fusion will solve power needs forever. Food from the sea will provide susten¬ ance for millions of years. The barriers of ignorance and intolerance are crumbling before the march of knowl¬ edge and understanding. However, a united peaceful world with a high standard of living available to every¬ one can be realized only if each individual accepts his responsibilities. Freedom cannot exist if all do not par¬ ticipate. The dreams of the ages are within reach. The chal¬ lenge is yours to meet. Being Business Manager takes a lot of work, doesn’t it, Kathy Mahaney? Susie Altman, your Senior Editor, struggles with the Senior write-ups. Dick Stimets deserves a great deal of credit for his hard work as Editor-in-Chief. The Student Council is the only group that is elected to represent the entire school. The Council works constantly to improve your school by studying prob¬ lems and recommending solutions. Much of the time at the weekly meetings this year was devoted to consideration of op¬ tional attendance at assemblies, revision of lunch schedule, more parking space for cars, a proposed course in Russian and the smoking problem. The participation of all insured the success of the Council ' s many projects which included school elections, football dance, gym show, paper drive, season ticket sales, United Fund drive and Morgan Memorial clothing drive. 26 “Respectfully submitted, Betty Mulroy, secretary.” FINANCIAL COUNCIL First Row: C. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Mr. Maffeo entertains the audience with personal anecdotes. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to recognize excel¬ lence of achievement in many fields. Members are chosen according to their manifestation of the qualities of leadership, scholarship, char¬ acter, and service. At Wellesley High School, the upper sixth of the Juniors and the upper third of the Seniors, in scholastic rank, are eligible for membership. From these students, the faculty elects five per cent and fifteen per cent of each class respectively. At this year’s induction assembly, we were honored to have as a guest speaker, the Superintendent of Schools in Natick, Mr. Maflfeo, who delivered an inspiring speech on the subject, “To Each His Own.” “Thank you, Mr. Graves.” First Row: H. During 1959-1960 the American Field Service Council carried out a number of interesting and worthwhile projects while fur¬ thering the A.F.S. goal of promoting international understanding through student exchanges on the high school level. This year, for the first time, Wellesley High School had two American Field Service exchange students: Laura Taricco from Italy, and Wolf¬ gang Jobmann from Germany. Projects and activities for the year included Tag Day, Work Day, evening get-togethers, the selling of A.F.S. cookbooks, a Ski weekend, and a weekend as host to thirty foreign students from neighboring towns. Directed by Mr. Lorett and co-editors Hannah Young and Karen Grant, a staff of some thirty students co¬ ordinated their efforts to publish the Bradford six times during the school year. Starting off with a new printer, the editors tried a fresh approach in making the Bradford best represent the students and the school. At Christmas the staff was able to assemble a six-page issue with spe¬ cial articles and an entire page of candid pictures. Again in the final June issue the Bradford had six pages includ¬ ing the Senior Will and Prophecy. First Row: J. Day, S. Winjum, H. Young, K. Grant, R. Jetter, D. Tetrick. Second Row: Mr. Lorett, A. KEY CLUB Steve Strunck, Key Club Secretary, notes the proceedings at a Board meeting. Under the direction of Mr. Kamitian and President Ron Edgerton, the Key Club enjoyed a rewarding year of service to both the school and the community. Because of the success of both the concession stand at Wellesley’s home football games and the Halloween Candy Drive, the Club’s earnings reached an all-time high. Contributions were given to the Ernest F. Upham Scholarship Fund, the United Fund, the high school Athletic Fund, and the American Field Service. Key Clubbers also bundled magazines for the Magazines for Freedom Drive, served as guides at the Wellesley Home for the Aged Develop¬ ment, distributed posters for the Red Cross Drive and umpired at Little League baseball games. The novel auction dance in February was thoroughly enjoyed by the many who attended. “Quick, five dogs, four cokes, three pickles and $7.85 in change.” First Row: S. Fumia, T. Parker, S. Strunk, R. In May the Club vis¬ ited Boston University for the purpose of learning more about the dramatic techniques of experienced actors and stage managers. The year concluded with the installation program of all new members who had helped to make the season an enjoyable and rewarding one. Dave DeRosier is noted for his firm handshake. Chameleons learn that there are many facets of dramatics. 33 WISEWELL SCIENCE CLUB First Row: G. Stipe, S. Loutrel, P. Hill, P. Anthony, B. Davidson. Second Row: R. Stimets, J. Rutherfoord, D. Pierce, R. Bankart, D. Wharen. The Wisewell Science Club represents the presence of scientific interest and spirit at Wellesley High. Its main purpose is to offer an easily accessible source of scien¬ tific information and enlightenment to both members and non-members. During the 1959-1960 season, as in the past, the Club invited professional scientists to come to meetings and lecture in various fields of science. Field trips were conducted to the Boston Museum of Science and to several important research laboratories in the Greater Boston area. The guidance and sponsor¬ ship of the Club contributed largely to the success of the Science Fair in March. . . and the music comes out here.” Experimentation is the basis of science. 34 SCIENCE FAIR George McQuilkin tells how liquid air can be made from the regenerator. The 1960 Science Fair was an admirable display of individual scien¬ tific skill, knowledge and ingenuity in project development. The judges noted that a large percentage of the projects, if entered in pre¬ vious years, would have taken top honors. As a result, it was necessary to exceed the customary limit of three Honorable Mentions in each of the three categories. Cash prizes, contributed by the Wellesley Boosters, were awarded to the top three winners in Biology, Chem¬ istry, and Physics. The one-hundred-thirty participants and all who contributed to the success of the Fair are to be congratulated for an excellent performance. David Norton expounds on the crania of our feathered friends. SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS: D. Lewis, S. Loutrel, R. McVoy, B. Mulroy, D. Viguers. B. Monahan, W. Crosbie, R. Stimets, D. Norton. 35 BAND This year’s seventy-five piece Band was the largest Wellesley High has ever had. Because of the many new sophomore musicians, it was necessary to form a Train¬ ing Band in addition to the regular football-concert Band. The excellent attendance at practice sessions re¬ sulted in much improvement in the drills presented at the football games this season. Activities included par¬ ticipating in a Boston University Band Night in October, marching in the Veterans’ Day parade, presenting a stu¬ dent assembly in February, and taking part in the Spring Music Festival at Brockton, Mass. The band marches east, and the band marches west. First Row: K. Fitzgibbons, C. Grome, S. Fleming, L. Cremonini. Second Row: R. Dunn, J. Peacock, R. Mock, R. Harrison, T. Winn, J. Gardner, P. The Orchestra consisted of thirty-eight members, in¬ cluding all the strings in the school plus selected brass, woodwind, and percussion instrumentalists from the Band. At the bi-weekly rehearsals, time was devoted to both classical and popular music. Under the experienced direction of Mr. Leach, the group played before and after each assembly period and worked enthusiastically for the spring concert and the graduation exercises. This year, for the first time, Wellesley High was fortunate to have an ensemble of a pianist and advanced string and woodwind musicians. This group accompanied the fine performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors in Decem¬ ber. Mr. Leach adds the touch of the maestro. 37 CHORAL GROUPS GLEE CLUB— First Row: E. Wood, D. Viguers, N. At one meeting the Club was informed of the program offered at the Harvard Graduate School of Edu¬ cation. Activities included having a panel of elementary school teachers speak to the group, attending the annual F.T.A. State Convention, and assisting in grade schools. The student assistance program gave mem¬ bers an opportunity to observe and teach at Kingsbury School, and thus become acquainted with the teaching profession in action. May Koh’s slide lecture on the respective problems of China and Hong Kong constituted a prime highlight in the series of interesting and informative meetings, many of which were also embellished by the lectures of other foreign students. Special meetings were called from time to time to discuss pertinent current events. Several movies were shown, one of these being “The Face of Crime,” an hour and a half docu¬ mentary feature which presented various insights into prison life and assorted methods of egress. Under the proficient supervision of Mr. Charles D. Burgess, the members passed many enjoyable hours. This is what goes on “at 2:45 in Room 205.” 41 ART SERVICE CLUB First Row: Mr. Simone, J. The Club is especially valuable to many artistically inclined students who cannot participate in the regular art courses. The first major project this season was the making of decora¬ tions for the Icebreaker. The Club also assisted with decorations for the Winter Whirl and the Key Club Dance. Several posters were made to announce commu¬ nity activities. 42 “That bottle did say washable, didn’t it. Sue?” BULLETIN BOARD COMMITTEE First Row: M. Bush, L. Muir, D. Vose, C. Johnson, J. FOOTBALL Line Coach Kerivan, Head Coach Certuse. Captain Don Knapman, center VARSITY The Red-Raiders com¬ piled a successful record of 5-2-1 in 1959. This resulted from the hard practice and relentless training under the leadership of coaches Cer¬ tuse, Kerivan, and Platine. On the field, Captain Don Knapman called on the team to make that “second effort.” As a result, the Raiders won a rating of second place in the Bay State League, outscoring their opponents by sixty-six points. Highlights of the season included the drub¬ bing of favored Braintree and the defeat of Wellesley’s traditional rival, Needham. Ted Akerson was rated first-string end on the All- State Scholastic Team; Knapman, LaBorne, Moore and Most were a- warded Honorable Mention. Because of a lack of experienced runners, the 1959 Cross Country Team wound up the season with a record of 0-8. However, thanks to Coach Chapman’s hard practice, some improvement was seen over the previous season. The meets with Framingham and Norwood were extremely close, and in the League Meet, Wellesley placed ahead of Norwood. One member of the squad, Alex MacPhail, placed twelfth in the State Meet. Stand¬ outs on the varsity team included Wood, MacPhail, DeRosier, Spita and Schneider. On your mark! Get Set! SOCCER It’s a soccer summit session! 1959 was the first year varsity soccer was played at Wellesley and a large number of boys turned out to par¬ ticipate in the new sport. The many hours of hard prac¬ tice and training in soccer skills and fundamentals re¬ sulted in a very successful season. Under the able coach¬ ing of Mr. Kjeldsen and leadership of Captain Rick Howard, the team ran up a commendable season’s record of 6-2-2. The only losses were incurred at the hands of the undefeated Lincoln-Sudbury team. Hey, come on! No hands allowed! First Row: J. Wilson, R. Howard, J. Harrington, J. Andrew, T. Parker, S. Hood, D. Field hockey is one of the most popular activities in the girls’ sports season. Almost seventy girls indicated their interest in playing on the intet-school field hockey team in 1959. From this number only thirty-eight could be chosen for Varsity or Junior Varsity competition. Membership on the Team entailed many afternoons of long hard practice. The Team was aided by all those girls who returned from field hockey camp, bringing new skills and suggestions. Excellent coaching and the ability of the girls to work closely together as a team enabled the Varsity squad to compile a record of 4-2-1. Keep your eyes on the ball, Jane Tallon. First Row: S. I dell. “This way we can score twice as many points.” “I thought that pass was a little slow.” Both Girls’ Basketball Teams experienced a com¬ mendable season in emerging victorious in Bay State League competition. The outstanding Varsity squad, captained by Mary Wegner and Sue Lyeth, was made up mainly of Seniors who had had one or two years’ previ¬ ous experience. The Junior Varsity squad, which im¬ proved greatly with each game, was led by Doris Viguers and Bonnie Peek. Enthusiasm, determination, and hard work were the reasons for the success of the Teams. 57 BASKETBALL First Row: T. Most, L. Mercer, S. Fitzmaurice, R. Moore, V. Lanza, E. Sherry, R. Ramsey. Second Row: C. Rainey, W. Rowan, K. Woodcock, R. Robinson, S. Rossi, S. Hood, M. Salvi, Mr. Bergstrom. When the leading teams in the Bay State League score sixty points or more in almost every game whether they win or lose, the league is undoubtedly a strong one. This year Wellesley lacked the scoring punch of the more powerful teams. Although the season was not a successful one as far as the standings go, the Team’s spirit and determination never faltered. Under the very capable coaching of Mr. Bergstrom the Team, through long hours of hard practice, played some great basket¬ ball, even in defeat. “What do I do now, coach? Although the Hockey Team did not enjoy a victorious year, considerable improve¬ ment and development were seen during the course of the season. Waging an uphill battle, the determined icemen proved to some tough opposition, by very close scores, that Wellesley could fight hard. Outstanding as high-scorer was George Finnegan whose spirited play and powerful shots consistently bombarding the enemy nets made him a valuable asset to the Team. First Row: T. Doyle, C. Collins, R. However, because of limited practice and a lack of team depth, Wellesley was unable to emerge victorious over its more experienced rivals. The Team, led by Captain Steve Gray, showed strength in the freestyle event, in which Scott McKenny and George McQuilkin consistently took honors. It looks as if the mermaids have put in an appearance at the Babson Pool. 61 Malcolm Grandy’s perfect form wins points for Wellesley. WRESTLING First Row: P. Sargent, R. Peek, B. Chevone, R. Wrestling is a sport designed to build up the strength, speed, and endurance of the combatants. A wrestler is on the mat for what seems an infinitely long eight minutes and must rely completely on him¬ self. Coach Kjeldsen has stressed the fact that while strength and stamina are im¬ portant, the man who has a knowledge of wrestling technique has a great advan¬ tage. Guided capably by Mr. Kjeldsen, the Team continued its improvement over previous years-this season with a victori¬ ous record of 9-2. Show him the lights, Pete! Russ Newhall rides piggyback. 62 GYM SHOW It’s a long way down, Bob, but just think how Mike Mastro must feel! The twentieth annual Gym Show, given on March 30 and April 1, 1960, was a sellout performance. Un¬ der the direction of Miss Bronson and Mr. Steeves and his staff—Miss Cop¬ ley, Mrs. Wanless, Mr. and Mrs. Kjeldson, and Mr. Hines—over one hundred athletes pooled their talents to put on a thrilling two- hour show. Boys’ events in¬ cluded exercises on still rings, parallel bars, side horse, trampoline and hori¬ zontal bar; tumbling; long horse vaulting, triple bal¬ ancing, and the spectacular tableaux. The girls partici¬ pated in tumbling, vaulting, folk dancing, modern dance and triple balancing. The vocal accompaniment of the Boys’ Chorus under Mr. Chase introduced this year, added much to the effec¬ tiveness of the tableaux. Ron Peek, Rick Landers and Bob Peek thrill the audience with their triple-balancing act. Ron Edgerton demonstrates his cham¬ pionship form on the side horse. 63 Linda Marchetti executes a successful vault. BASEBALL Shaun Fitzmaurice’s powerful bat is a valuable asset to Wellesley’s offense. The 1959 Baseball Team experienced a completely successful season. In compiling a 14-2 record, the nine overcame some strong opposition to bring the Bay State League Championship to Wellesley. Clutch pitch¬ ing, and tight fielding by the whole Team allowed very few men to reach base against the Red Raiders. Welles¬ ley also enjoyed a potent offense which consistently pounded the opposing pitching with numerous basehits. The highlight of the season came in the game against Framingham when, in the last of the ninth inning with Wellesley trailing 4-3, Brad Cliff hit a tremendous four- hundred-foot grand slam home run. Hansen, K. Hallstrand, B. Peek, C. Fitzsimmons, E. Parker, J. Bailey. The 1959 Girls’ Softball Team had a losing but truly enjoyable season. Forty girls reported for tryouts and the final squad numbered twenty-seven. Only one squad was formed because there are no Junior Varsity squads in our league. The girls re¬ ported faithfully for practice and games four, and sometimes five, days a week. Games were played on Tuesdays and Thurs¬ days with the various teams of the Bay State League. Every girl on the squad was given a chance to play in at least one game. The final record for the season was 3-4-0. They shall not pass! Let’s hope the outfielders are protected by the invisible shield. 65 SPRING TRACK First Row: W. Clegg, R. McNamara, J. Tartari, J. Kelley, C. Orloff, E. Acly, J. Spita, R. Edgerton, E. Wood, F. Meury, Mr. Chapman. Don’t be so glum, Charlie; it’s only five feet down. The 1959 Spring Track Squad registered a worthy season. When the spring had drawn to a close, Welles¬ ley had posted a 4-3-1 record. Each of these three losses was sustained by the margin of only a few points, and their closeness demonstrated the all-round depth of Wellesley. The season featured a continually strength¬ ening squad. The team’s success was due mainly to the large turnout of underclassmen, especially Juniors. Going into orbit! 66 GOLF Joel Spangler drives off in perfect form. Under the leadership of Mr. Simone, the Golf Team putted to a 7-3 record. Coach Simone showed his genuine interest by teeing off against the opposing coach in every tournament. Golf is undoubtedly the most relaxing of all spring sports. The partici¬ pants compete on beautiful, roll¬ ing, green fairways; there are no training rules, daily practices or even a special bus. Yet team spirit and effort are as high as in other sports. All are held together by a love for the game and for the outdoors. You’ll never get the grass done at that rate, Alan. Mr. Simone, J. Spangler, R. Harney, A. Dwyer, T. Parker, R. Varo. BOYS ' TENNIS Under the able coaching of Mr. Andrew, the Boys’ Tennis Team ran up a record of 5-2-0. Both losses were at the hands of Framingham. Wellesley lost the Bay State League Championship to the strong Framingham team in an exciting and close-fought past-season match, which Wellesley was forced to play without their number-one man. In spite of the championship loss, the team, through a great deal of prac¬ tice, came through with a very commendable season. Tennis is a grueling sport. “The ball has already gone by, Dick!” First Row: R. Allison, S. Burtt, W. Giese, J. Farnham, R. Woltman. Second Row: Mr. Andrew, G. Potts, P. Peters, R. Nugent, G. The Girls’ Tennis Team was very successful in 1959, losing only one match in seven. Wellesley outscored her opponents 28-7 but was finally overcome by a strong Needham squad. The team was ably coached by Miss Coply who set up a series of elimination ladder tourna¬ ments. The first seven girls on the ladder then played in each match. Consistent players were Sue Foley, Sue Haughey, Debbie Ladd, Sue Ellison, and Sally Tilley. 69 Debbie Ladd serves an ace. Don’t sleep through your next line, John. On the night of December 5, 1959, the Class of 1960 presented Terrance Rattigan’s The Winslow Boy . Set in Kensington, Eng¬ land, and based on an actual court case, the play centers about young Ronnie Winslow’sexpulsionfromOsborne Naval Academy for the theft of a postal order and his father’s uphill fight to prove his son’s innocence. Ronnie was played by John Embree and Arthur Winslow by Randy McNamara. Linda Bertocci was cast as Catherine, Ronnie’s elder sister, who is equally eager to clear the young boy’s name. Susan Winjum played Grace, Ronnie ' s strongly protective mother, and Wolfgang Jobmann portrayed the distinguished lawyer who defends the case. Sir Robert Morton. The cast also included John Campbell as Dickie, the Winslows’ somewhat boisterous elder son; Dick Miron as John Wathcrstonc, Catherine’s fiance; Don Eldredge as Desmond Curry, the family solicitor; Susan Ellison as Violet, the Winslows ' maid; Susie Alt¬ man as Miss Barnes, a newspaperwoman; and Steve Young as Fred, the photographer. It can be said without reservation that The Winslow Boy was a superb performance. With quiet assurance he accepted respon¬ sibility, devoting much of his time to the interests of others. Those who knew him will never forget the cheer¬ ful, friendly spirit of Frederick A. Howard. FREDERICK COLEMAN Frederick Coleman, a member of our Senior Class, passed away on July 19, 1959. Fred participated in Foot¬ ball and Hockey and he was an outstanding member of the Gym Team. His warm personality and good humor gained him many friends among the faculty and the student body. The Class of 1960 deeply regrets the loss of Frederick Coleman, a wonderful friend and classmate. 105 AND MORE OF YOUR SCHOOL May Koh is our excellent good will ambassador from Hong Kong.
