THE GYM TEAM Although a minor squad, the Gym Team plays a big role in developing the bodies and coordination of all those who have worked out with the team. As proved by the fine exhi¬ bition on the night of the Gym Show, a successful year in gym work may only be achieved by hard work on the part of every boy on the squad. The annual exhibition of the Gym Team was put on Satur¬ day, February 17, in the high school auditorium. Under the di¬ rection of Coach Steeves, members of the team practiced hard and conscientiously during the year to develop these particular skills for the big night. Willing to try anything, the boys became expert on the high bar, par¬ allel bars, side horse and the mats. Outstanding men in their fields are Ted Steeves on the parallel bars, John Biladeau on high bar, Joe Dischino and Jim Pucillo on the side horse, and George Harunk on the parallel bars and side horse. i i I I n 1 I INDOOR TRACK This year ' s indoor track team, led by Captain Mai Brickett, proved to be above average. Even though classed as a minor sport, indoor track play a major part in locating talent for the outdoor team. This winter found the boys winning a firm third place in the highly touted state meet, with Brickett scoring in the dash, Baughman in the high jump and Drysdale in the 300. The relay teams, composed of Drysdale, Brickett, Shanklin and Fullerton, completed Wellesley’s scor¬ ing. Earlier in the season found the team losing to strong Natick, perhaps because of captain Brickett’s absence. Other members of the squad were Dowd, Garrod, Babcock, Harunk, Vaughan, C. Sullivan, Sutherland, Noo¬ nan, Leyon, Parnin and B. Gleason. They were aided and abetted by numerous sophomores. Everyone worked hard and the result of their efforts was shown in the spring, when outdoor track commenced.

Wellesley’s 1950 cross coun¬ try squad was a good one. Under the fine coaching of Ray Chapman and management of Lo- throp Smith, this year’s red and white harriers were a fighting team that overcame numerous injuries and absences to finish strongly. The dual meet record was 4 wins against 5 losses. The wins were recorded, 2 apiece, against Hopedale and the Essex Aggies. The losses were against rivals Concord, Revere, Everett, Woburn and Winchester. Exceeding that record was the showing in the larger meets, as the squad improved in balance. In the divisional meet at Concord, Wellesley was 6th of 7 teams. The highlight was in the J. V. race when Forest Adams placed third out of forty runners. The Harriers then journeyed to Tufts where they placed 9th out of 13 teams. To highlight the season Wel¬ lesley was 7th in a field of 27 teams at the state meet. CROSS COUNTRY This year’s co-captains Shanklin and Bauer were consistent leaders assisted by Leyon, McCurdy, Dowd, Parnin, Noonan, Sullivan, Hogarty and Sutherland. Much credit must be given to all the squad members who throughout the entire season strove to improve their team’s record. hirst Rou: Mr. Chapman, P. Dowd. J. I.eyon. (i. Parnin, R. Shanklin, R. THE GOLF TEAM This year the golf team had its best chance of taking the league title in four years. Only one varsity man, Captain Fred Chase, was lost through gradua¬ tion last year. The prospects looked bright with five returning lettermen. These included Co-captains Dave Coe and Bill Walker, Charlie Tinkham, Paul Wegerdt and Louey Ouellet. New addi¬ tions to the team included Parker Roberts and Herb Gross. Under the direction of Coach Ted Steeves the team finished well up in the standing. With hard work and perseverance, the team as a whole was strong and well balanced, giving opposing teams a hard combination to beat. TENNIS One of the earlier signs of spring this year was the appearance on the High School courts of many tennis enthusiasts. Still smarting from their continued failure to upset St. Marks, the team exerted unusual effort toward developing greater skills and finesse in this fine sport. Joe Stevens and Phil McCurdy were the lone return¬ ing lettermen from last year’s squad. A few of the teams that the boys have been slated against this reason were Needham, Dedham, St. Marks, Hingham, Milton, Westwood, and B. C. High. They met each of these squads twice to round out the season with about a four¬ teen game schedule. The team has done quite well against all their public school opponents and the squad showed ex¬ cellent form and teamwork in the various meets.
