WRESTLING TEAM Front Row: R. Kilmain, P. Wegen.lt, P. Rutledge, G. Harunk, K. Keefe, G. Meier, B. Munn, J. GrignaHini. Second Row : Mr. Stergios, D. Brossi, L. McNeil, R. Johnson, F. Fullerton, R. Cremoni, R. Sweeney, D. Hill. Wellesley ' s 1950 wrestling team has been a good one and has improved in balance throughout the season. Although hurt by the loss of several of last year’s key men, the team rounded into good shape through hard work and perseverance. Under the expert leadership and coaching of ’ ' Doc” Stergios, the team, with the return of veterans George Harunk, Bruce Munn, Paul Rutledge, Joe Grigniffini and Dave Brossi has done very well. In addition, new members have filled the gaps left by graduates. The team in its first three meets, which were hard fought and closely contested, lost to more ex¬ perienced teams in Brown and Nichols, St. Marks and Brooks Academy. In a thrilling meet at the high school gym, Wellesley defeated arch rival Needham, 21-20, With the score 20T6 in favor of the visitors and with but one match left, Bruce Munn, behind on points, pinned his man and brought home 5 points and the victory. George Harunk, team captain, has been the outstanding grappler, pinning his man in all four meets. 28

SPRING TRACK The spring track team looked forward to a very successful sea¬ son under the direction of coach Ray Chapman and under the lead¬ ership of captain and state-220 yard low hurdle record holder Mai Brickett. With the aid of the return¬ ing varsity letter men and some prom¬ ising members of the cross country team, and due to the fact that we lost only three lettermen through graduation, we expected a fine season. The returning lettermen were Mai Brickett, who was undefeated in the 100 and the broad jump; Jim Drysdale, who ran the 100 and relay; Ber- nie Gleason and Paul Yelle who were outstanding in the broad jump; Charlie Sullivan, who ran the mile and the half and Dick Baughman, Miles Garrod, and Phil Dowd, who excelled in the high jump. The season included many dual meets and the State Meet, the Belmont Relay, the University of Massachusets Relay, and the Concord Invitation. Front Row: P. Dowd, D. Sutherland, D. Vaughan, M. Brickett. M. Garrod, C. Sullivan, R. Baughman. Second Rote : Mr. Chapman. Ci. Parnin, W. -Noonan, D. Shanklin, B. Gleason. D. Pulling. R. Hogerty. Back Row: P. Tower, A. Balsbaugh, I. Dovebird, J. Millward, Ci. Meier, B. Hahn, L. Reagen. 27

Wellesley’s 1950 cross coun¬ try squad was a good one. Under the fine coaching of Ray Chapman and management of Lo- throp Smith, this year’s red and white harriers were a fighting team that overcame numerous injuries and absences to finish strongly. The dual meet record was 4 wins against 5 losses. The wins were recorded, 2 apiece, against Hopedale and the Essex Aggies. The losses were against rivals Concord, Revere, Everett, Woburn and Winchester. Exceeding that record was the showing in the larger meets, as the squad improved in balance. In the divisional meet at Concord, Wellesley was 6th of 7 teams. The highlight was in the J. V. race when Forest Adams placed third out of forty runners. The Harriers then journeyed to Tufts where they placed 9th out of 13 teams. To highlight the season Wel¬ lesley was 7th in a field of 27 teams at the state meet. CROSS COUNTRY This year’s co-captains Shanklin and Bauer were consistent leaders assisted by Leyon, McCurdy, Dowd, Parnin, Noonan, Sullivan, Hogarty and Sutherland. Much credit must be given to all the squad members who throughout the entire season strove to improve their team’s record. hirst Rou: Mr. Chapman, P. Dowd. J. I.eyon. (i. Parnin, R. Shanklin, R. Bauer. P. McCurdy, L. Smith. Second Row: D. Sutherland, R. Hogarty, D. Pulling, F. Adams, W. N’onnan, L. Zuba, T. Jcdrzejewizc, D. Zani. 29
