The team’s 6-2 record earned it tenth place in Class C. In the first game the Raiders, led by co-captains Harunk and Johnston, who scored once each, humbled a favored Reading club 15-7. They continued their superlative work the following week against Lexington, with Johnston scoring one touchdown and passing for two, the first to Harunk, the second to Gleason. Gige also scored on an 85-yard jaunt off tackle. The next two games spelled disaster as we went down to defeat at the hands of Natick (14-0) and Milton (13-0). The following week, however, an aroused Raider eleven flattened a favored Hingham team, 31-0. Mason and Brickett broke into the scoring column with two touchdowns each. Harunk scored on an in¬ tercepted pass. After three scoreless periods in the Marlboro game, Mason crashed through from eight yards out to break the ice. Minutes later Russo intercepted a pass and went forty yards to make it 13-0 and an¬ other Raider victory. Next the Raiders coasted to a 26-0 win over Walpole. Speedster Brickett scored twice on long end sweeps and Drysdale and Monoghan added one each. The Raiders reached their peak Thanksgiving morning on Needham’s Memorial Field, trouncing their arch rival 18-0. Early in the second period a long pass from Dick Gleason to Pete Gallerani, sprawled on his back in the end zone, gave the Raiders a 6-0 lead. Monaghan scored once in each half on bull-like rushes to spark the team to its fourth straight win. The team outicored eight opponents 128 points to 40. Gige Harunk and Mai Brickett were the high scorers with 27 and 24 point - respectively. 17 BASKETBALL From ' Row: Sullivan, R. CUcason, Baughman, Gallcrani, Mamni. Coughlin. Second Row: Garvin, B. Gleason, Yelk , Adams, Barnett, Drysdale, Zigler, Prophet. I j The 1950 Raider basketball team had great potentialities. It rolled through its pre-season contests undefeated, while outscoring four opponents 242-124, but unfortunately it foundered when it hit the tough Bay State League competition. The starting club, made up of five seniors, was Pete Gallerani and Red Coughlin, co-captains, Lurr Maccini, Dick Baughman, and Paul Yelle. When performing at their best these boys were a great club; they could have been one of the best teams, but due to injuries and bad luck they found the going rough. Despite this, the boys had many good days. Pete’s hook shots, Red’s driving lay-ups, Lurr’s one-handers from the corner, Bocky’s set shots, and Paul’s driving one-handers accounted for more than 75% of the team’s points. The two outstanding subs were Jack Barnett from New Jersey and sophomore Paul Zigler. Jack’s long sets and Ziggy’s” jump shot were valu¬ able in tight spots. Other fellows who played often were Dick Gleason, Lou Garvin, John Prophet, Bernie Gleason, and Cousey Adams. 20 HOCKEY front Row: Johnston, Smart, Mason, Monaghan, Slyc. Back Row: Coach Hines, Elsemiller, Woods, Coe, Lindholm, Heaney, Larson, Prime vara, Montvillc. Well, another season is over but the Wellesley High Sextet came very near to capturing the Bay State Title this year. The first game was a low scoring affair with Wellesley victorious 2-0 over Need¬ ham. The team was very much pleased to overpower their arch rival in the first game. The next game with Framingham turned out in a 2-2 deadlock. Our third contest with B. C. High was a heart breaker, with B. C. High coming out on the long end of a 4-3 score. The main trouble of this game was the Wellesley penalties. The game with Walpole was another tough game to lose by such a small margin as 2-1. After losing two in a row, Coach Bud” Hines’ squad came back fighting with a 4-2 win over Nor¬ wood, o nly to be set down again by Waltham 2-1. The last game of the regular season ended in a decisive victory for Wellesley over Watertown, 6-0. During the play off, the team caught fire as they set down in order, B. C. High 3-2, Waltham 5-2 and Walpole 1-0. These three teams are the squads who previously had beaten Welles¬ ley during the regular season. This was a very successful season and there arc many letter men returning next year. Mr. Hines and the team are to be congratulated on the finest season since 1946, when Wellesley took the championship. 22 WHAT WE ARE PRO UD OF IN SPORTS! BASEBALL Front Row : Mr. Goodnough, R. Sonsini, K. Slye, P. Dalton, J. Fleming, G. Harunk, A. Bonzagni, W. Monaghan, Mr. Hines. Back Row: R. Batts, C. Reynolds, P. Russo, J. Barnett, J. McNellis, D. Roberts, L. Sardina, With the gloves and bats cut and being used once again, it’s time for the national pastime. Under the watchful eye of veteran coach ' ' Hal” Goodnough the Wellesley High nine had a favorable season with many lettermen returning. The senior boys coming back for another season were Billy Monaghan, noted for his long homeruns and great backstopping; Gige Harunk, one of the fastest men on the team and a fine fielder; Art Bonzagni, on the Bay State All-Star squad last season; Ken Slye, who hurled a no-hit, no-run game against Dedham last year; Joe Fleming, known as Fireman Joe for his timely relief roles; Ted Steeves; Paul Dalton; Lou Sardina, one of our old reliable catchers; and Jack Mason, our little second sacker. The two returning junior letter- men were Paul Russo and Charlie Reynolds. Probably the three toughest teams we faced this season were Natick, Dedham, and Milton. Under the excel¬ lent coaching of Mr. Goodnough and with some timely hitting and pitching, the team has done an excellent job, and all those connected with it should be congratu¬ lated. 26 SPRING TRACK The spring track team looked forward to a very successful sea¬ son under the direction of coach Ray Chapman and under the lead¬ ership of captain and state-220 yard low hurdle record holder Mai Brickett. With the aid of the return¬ ing varsity letter men and some prom¬ ising members of the cross country team, and due to the fact that we lost only three lettermen through graduation, we expected a fine season. The returning lettermen were Mai Brickett, who was undefeated in the 100 and the broad jump; Jim Drysdale, who ran the 100 and relay; Ber- nie Gleason and Paul Yelle who were outstanding in the broad jump; Charlie Sullivan, who ran the mile and the half and Dick Baughman, Miles Garrod, and Phil Dowd, who excelled in the high jump. The season included many dual meets and the State Meet, the Belmont Relay, the University of Massachusets Relay, and the Concord Invitation. Front Row: P. Dowd, D. Sutherland, D. Vaughan, M. Brickett. M. Garrod, C. Sullivan, R. Baughman. Second Rote : Mr. Chapman. Ci. Parnin, W. -Noonan, D. Shanklin, B. Gleason. D. Pulling. R. Hogerty. Back Row: P. Tower, A. Balsbaugh, I. Dovebird, J. Millward, Ci. Meier, B. Hahn, L. Reagen. 27 WRESTLING TEAM Front Row: R. Kilmain, P. Wegen.lt, P. Rutledge, G. Harunk, K. Keefe, G. Meier, B. Munn, J. GrignaHini. Second Row : Mr. Stergios, D. Brossi, L. McNeil, R. Johnson, F. Fullerton, R. Cremoni, R. Sweeney, D. Hill. Wellesley ' s 1950 wrestling team has been a good one and has improved in balance throughout the season. Although hurt by the loss of several of last year’s key men, the team rounded into good shape through hard work and perseverance. Under the expert leadership and coaching of ’ ' Doc” Stergios, the team, with the return of veterans George Harunk, Bruce Munn, Paul Rutledge, Joe Grigniffini and Dave Brossi has done very well. In addition, new members have filled the gaps left by graduates. The team in its first three meets, which were hard fought and closely contested, lost to more ex¬ perienced teams in Brown and Nichols, St. Marks and Brooks Academy. In a thrilling meet at the high school gym, Wellesley defeated arch rival Needham, 21-20, With the score 20T6 in favor of the visitors and with but one match left, Bruce Munn, behind on points, pinned his man and brought home 5 points and the victory. George Harunk, team captain, has been the outstanding grappler, pinning his man in all four meets. 28 Wellesley’s 1950 cross coun¬ try squad was a good one. Under the fine coaching of Ray Chapman and management of Lo- throp Smith, this year’s red and white harriers were a fighting team that overcame numerous injuries and absences to finish strongly. The dual meet record was 4 wins against 5 losses. The wins were recorded, 2 apiece, against Hopedale and the Essex Aggies. The losses were against rivals Concord, Revere, Everett, Woburn and Winchester. Exceeding that record was the showing in the larger meets, as the squad improved in balance. In the divisional meet at Concord, Wellesley was 6th of 7 teams. The highlight was in the J. V. race when Forest Adams placed third out of forty runners. The Harriers then journeyed to Tufts where they placed 9th out of 13 teams. To highlight the season Wel¬ lesley was 7th in a field of 27 teams at the state meet. CROSS COUNTRY This year’s co-captains Shanklin and Bauer were consistent leaders assisted by Leyon, McCurdy, Dowd, Parnin, Noonan, Sullivan, Hogarty and Sutherland. Much credit must be given to all the squad members who throughout the entire season strove to improve their team’s record. hirst Rou: Mr. Chapman, P. Dowd. J. I.eyon. (i. Parnin, R. Shanklin, R. Bauer. P. McCurdy, L. Smith. Second Row: D. Sutherland, R. Hogarty, D. Pulling, F. Adams, W. N’onnan, L. Zuba, T. Jcdrzejewizc, D. Zani. 29 THE GYM TEAM Although a minor squad, the Gym Team plays a big role in developing the bodies and coordination of all those who have worked out with the team. As proved by the fine exhi¬ bition on the night of the Gym Show, a successful year in gym work may only be achieved by hard work on the part of every boy on the squad. The annual exhibition of the Gym Team was put on Satur¬ day, February 17, in the high school auditorium. Under the di¬ rection of Coach Steeves, members of the team practiced hard and conscientiously during the year to develop these particular skills for the big night. Willing to try anything, the boys became expert on the high bar, par¬ allel bars, side horse and the mats. Outstanding men in their fields are Ted Steeves on the parallel bars, John Biladeau on high bar, Joe Dischino and Jim Pucillo on the side horse, and George Harunk on the parallel bars and side horse. i i I I n 1 I INDOOR TRACK This year ' s indoor track team, led by Captain Mai Brickett, proved to be above average. Even though classed as a minor sport, indoor track play a major part in locating talent for the outdoor team. This winter found the boys winning a firm third place in the highly touted state meet, with Brickett scoring in the dash, Baughman in the high jump and Drysdale in the 300. The relay teams, composed of Drysdale, Brickett, Shanklin and Fullerton, completed Wellesley’s scor¬ ing. Earlier in the season found the team losing to strong Natick, perhaps because of captain Brickett’s absence. Other members of the squad were Dowd, Garrod, Babcock, Harunk, Vaughan, C. Sullivan, Sutherland, Noo¬ nan, Leyon, Parnin and B. Gleason. They were aided and abetted by numerous sophomores. Everyone worked hard and the result of their efforts was shown in the spring, when outdoor track commenced. THE GOLF TEAM This year the golf team had its best chance of taking the league title in four years. Only one varsity man, Captain Fred Chase, was lost through gradua¬ tion last year. The prospects looked bright with five returning lettermen. These included Co-captains Dave Coe and Bill Walker, Charlie Tinkham, Paul Wegerdt and Louey Ouellet. New addi¬ tions to the team included Parker Roberts and Herb Gross. Under the direction of Coach Ted Steeves the team finished well up in the standing. With hard work and perseverance, the team as a whole was strong and well balanced, giving opposing teams a hard combination to beat. TENNIS One of the earlier signs of spring this year was the appearance on the High School courts of many tennis enthusiasts. Still smarting from their continued failure to upset St. Marks, the team exerted unusual effort toward developing greater skills and finesse in this fine sport. Joe Stevens and Phil McCurdy were the lone return¬ ing lettermen from last year’s squad. A few of the teams that the boys have been slated against this reason were Needham, Dedham, St. Marks, Hingham, Milton, Westwood, and B. C. High. They met each of these squads twice to round out the season with about a four¬ teen game schedule. The team has done quite well against all their public school opponents and the squad showed ex¬ cellent form and teamwork in the various meets. GIRLS’ HOCKEY 1 Front Row: N. Linton, B. Verner, D. Fox, B. Harris. Second Row: M. J. Monaghan, S. Geary, J. Fisher, B. McCurdy, F.. Child, L. Snyder, V. Graves. Third Row: G. Murphy, J. Merrill, J. MtSweeney, S. Durrell, P. Turner, M. San Martino, B. Adams. Last fall, in spite of rainy weather, you might have seen the girls’ hockey team enthusiastically sloshing around on the football field practicing for future games. Strong fullbacks kept the opponents’ ball away from our goal, while strong centers kept it hovering around the opponents’ goal where the girls just couldn’t get the ball in. Although we had quite a rough season, under the able guidance of Captain Dru silla Fox, the Varsity managed to come through with a record of one win, two ties, and two losses. The excellent team work and enthusiasm of the J. V.’s under their Captain Cynthia Bennett, with a record of two wins, one tie, and two losses give our coach, Miss Copley, promise of a good iea-ion next year. 32 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball squad, coached by Miss Copley, was divided into class teams. The seniors were captained by Vir¬ ginia Robinson, the juniors by Gail Richardson, and the sopho¬ mores by Linda Gorham. The seniors and sophomores did well, taking two out of three. The seniors were victorious over Needham 13-9 and the sophomores whitewashed Norwood 44-28. All three teams won over Natick making a clean sweep. The juniors won by a score of 21-6, while the sophomores won 26-7, and the seniors’ score was 16-12. Later the squad was divided into Varsity and Junior Varsity teams which played three games. The Varsity chose as its captain, Joan Fisher, the Junior Varsity, Sue Palmer. Both teams met defeat at the hands of Concord and Lexington, but split with Weston as the Junior Varsity triumphed. Front Row: S. Palmer. H. Adams. E. Child. S. Vover. C. itreet. A. Merrill. Second Rote: J. Perry. J. MtSweeney. V. Robinson, S. Wennherg. V. Graves, D. Fox. Third Rou : B. A. McCurdy, B. L. Second Row: S. Leach, J. Merrill. Fi. Robinson, C. Brickett, D. Webster. Buck Row: B. McCurdy, . Palmer, G. Lapham, A. McFarlin, A. Merwin, Miss Copley. 34 The energetic tennis team was as successful as ever this year with many veteran players both in singles and doubles to make the team a strong one. It played en¬ thusiastic games with many schools. The girls on the team were always faced with a challenge because this year, for the first time, in or tic r to play in a match, the girls had to be one of the top seven players on the ladder tournament, which opens the season. This new system proved very successful, as the competition stimulated the players to a better tennis, game. You probably saw the racquet girls smashing and lobbing on the courts on almost any day that the weather was favorable, getting into full swing for their successful year. This year ' s schedule included matches and return matches with Norwood, Hingham, Lexington, Concord, and Braintree. SOFTBALL Throughout the spring great activity has been seen after school out on the athletic field as many enthusiastic girls began competing for positions on the two softball teams. Although the season was short, the spirit of the teams was very good. This year, with many of last year’s players returning and with the turnout of many promising sophomores, the teams have shown very favorable results. One of the difficulties in providing an in- tcrscholastic schedule is the fact that few high schools have girls’ softball teams. However, the in¬ terest among the girls is high and games were played with Hingham, Natick and Concord. It is hoped that the growing interest in the sport will make possible a larger schedule in years to come. Front Row: M. Melunson. B. Verner. J. Fisher. C. Farnsworth. J. Gleason, B. S-awilay, A. Wellesley High School was chosen to be host to the Fifteenth Annual Conference of the National Association of Student Councils in June 1951. The Student Council and PTSA Advisory Council were divided into steering committees to direct volunteers from the student body in planning for the confer¬ ence. Most of the Council’s activities were in some way connected with the coming conference. In January an assembly was presented to show the students the need for their participation. Many of the council members traveled to neighboring high schools to inform them of the plans for the f onference. Although the year was dedicated to preparation for the Conference, none of the usual activities was neglected. An additional project was A the Paper Drive, planned and sponsored by the Student Council with the support of the entire student body. Over nine hun¬ dred dollars was added to the Students’ General bund for the use of all school organizations. 1951 has been an outstanding year under the lead¬ ership of Bob Sullivan, president; John Prophet, vice-president; Ann Sullivan, recording secre¬ tary ; Jean-Marie McSweeney, corresponding secretary; Edward Fullerton, reporting sec¬ retary. 42 THE BRADFORD Six times during the year the Bradford was published, high¬ lighting the outstanding events of the school year from September to June, from the Sophomore Ice¬ breaker to Graduation Day. Under the capable leadership of Charles Sul¬ livan, editor-in-chief, and with the able assistance of Betty Lou Almond, Nancy Petersen, Sue Gannon, Dick Gleason, Dru- silla Fox, Jane Emery, and Bob Elsemiller, the Brad fore gave us the ever popular Babble, com¬ ments on special social events and reviews of cur¬ rent sports. Memorable was the art work done by Sophomore Draper Hill and the photography by Nick Holt. A little more on the serious side was the interesting and informative article If You Ask Me by Doc” Stergios. So, after a successful year the Brad ford rests until it is taken up again at some later date. First Row. D. Fox. . Gannon, N. Petersen, B. L. Almond, M. Govoni, A. Burnham, B. Pullen, C. This fall it played at all the football games and it was accompanied by the new twirling corps, which is under the capable direction of Marcie Govoni. All through the winter it has been re¬ hearsing for the music festivals in May. The fifty-five piece concert band, which played at these two audition festivals, included several members from the junior high school. At both festivals the band marched in the parade. Three members attended the New England Concert Festival, which was held in Auburn, Maine. ORCHESTRA The orchestra has been doing a fine job this year under the excellent direction of Mr. Leach. Among their many activities, they accompanied the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta Pirates of Penzance and, of course, played for graduation. Members of the orchestra at¬ tended the New England Concert Festival in Auburn, Maine, and others played for the Wellesley Community Orchestra. No one will forget the music of all types that filled the first floor on Monday X period, nor will they forget coming into assemblies to the rhythm of the brisk marches. 44 SERVICE CLUB The Service Club was or¬ ganized just this year. The idea for this club was presented before the students at the first of the year by Mr. Simone. The need for such a club was discussed thoroughly by the student council and was approved. The purpose of the club is to take care of all outside art work such as posters, signs and deco¬ rations for the dances and plays. The members of the club did work for the senior play You Can’t Take It With You. They did all work connected with the staging of Don Russell’s show Heaven Only Knows. The club is composed of thirty-five girls and boys who volun¬ teer their services once a week. They hope that their success with this newly-formed club will be an incentive to the future students of Wellesley High. DEVOTIONAL COMMITTEE The Devotional Committee was newly formed last September and is made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Its work is composed mainly of preparing the devotional programs to be given each morning at the beginning of the school day. The committee also chooses people to read the devotions over the P. A. system. The members of this committee feel that it is im¬ portant to have fine devotional material, and it is for that reason that so much hard work is will¬ ingly done. Some of the various types of pro¬ grams that have been given this year are presentations of parables, dramatizations during the Christmas or Easter seasons, musical programs, and condensations of sermons. This years membership of eighty-five made the committee the largest it has ever been. Each member, however, was given an opportunity to demonstrate his talent in arranging assemblies. The committee was divided into smaller groups to plan the weekly programs. Concord High School once again exchanged a program with Wellesley. Wellesley presented its hilarious one- act play, The Tantrum , for the entertainment of the Concord students. Plays, movies, talks and quiz programs have contributed to the well-rounded series, with both enlighten¬ ing and refreshing Friday mornings. 46 BULLETIN BOARD and SHOWCASE COMMITTEES Once again the Bulletin Board Committee has worked hard to pro¬ vide the school with enjoyment and information through its often delightful displays. Throughout the school year i has posted material on the various college helped publicize the school’s activities and kept us up to date on the many special weeks,” as well as provided us with just plain pleasure with bright pictures and even cartoon displays. The Showcase Committee has also worked hard to keep its displays from being dull and monotonous. Up through the football season, Ronnie Bazirgan’s football shirt was kept in the showcase as an appropriate reminder of the loss of one of the Senior class’s favorites. After that, however, the com¬ mittee did its best to brighten up the lobby. The displays showed originality; the committee even went so far as to borrow material from the Children’s Museum. t es, First Row: M. J. Butler. A. Young. C. Farnsworth. J. Murray. S. Wennberg, J. The Second Annual Thanksgiving Assembly gave the school a glimpse of the versatility of their Choirs. With the presentation of Fantasy 88, arranged by the conductor, and Richard Bauer’s rendition of The Road To Mandalay, the school was made aware of the talented personnel in the group. December brought three appearances of the Choirs and featured a direct broadcast from the auditorium stage over WCRB. Sheila Geary, gifted soprano .oloist, was featured as a part of the Choirs’ contribution to the Community Christ¬ mas Festival. During the winter months one could hear members of the Choir rehearsing music from Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta The Pirates of Penzance for presentation in the spring. The Choirs, with its accompanist, Chandler Gregg, have provided the school with many sparkling perform¬ ances throughout the K ' hool year. 48 THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Wellesley chapter of this society is under the spon¬ sorship of Mr. Moulton. The faculty elects each year not more than five percent of the Junior class and not more than fifteen per¬ cent of the Senior class as members. Certificates of merit are awarded to each after he has given the following pledge: ”1 pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of this society to which I have been elected, striving in every way by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life.” While this era accords recogni¬ tion to the athlete and applause to the public entertainer, The Na¬ tional Honor Society perpetuates scholarship. Aware, also, that intel¬ lectual superiority alone is not sufficient to safeguard the interests of the individual or nation, The National Honor Society re¬ quires of its members ample evidence of char¬ acter, service, and leadership in the school and m the community. This organization is to the secondary school what the Phi Beta Kappa Society is to the college. JR fr jv - T wLtg M Ftont Ron : P. Paquette, E. McCurdy. M. Rosenblatt. 5- Gannon. H. Kolb. H. Moulton. Nearly everyone in Wellesley High School is aware of the Senior Council, but not of its work and make-up. This Council is composed of the Senior Class officers and the Senior members of the Student Council. Its many duties lie in the circle of the problems of the Senior class. With the advice of Mr. Spang, the council makes decisions on issues that are vitally important to the Senior Class. The price of the tickets to the Senior Flay always has to be decided; other im¬ portant issues, such as the Senior From, the class picnic, the -election of a class gilt, and choosing a speaker at graduation keep the Senior Council very busy. 60 THE WELI.ESLEYAN This is your yearbook. Into it have gone many long hours of hard work on the part of a large and enthusiastic yearbook staff. The job of publishing an annual such as yours may seem to some a routine yearly task that has become a custom, throughout the years. Many new difficulties are still encountered each year, but the work remains fresh. This year’s obstacles have finally been overcome and it is our belief that we have published for your benefit, the most successful yearbook ever to represent Wellesley High School. When read, throughout the summer months and in years to come, it will renew many happy memories. We believe that our senior class has spent an outstanding three years in Wellesley High School. We hope that the pages of our yearbook have caught the highlights of those three years. Front Row. S. Durrell, I:. Harris, B. L. Almond. M. J. Butler. P. Kearns, M. Melanson. D. Fox, A. Sullivan, J.
