ROBERT TENIPLETON BIBLICAL IIISTORY PHILOSOPHY EDLCATIUN DE OF LIVING Bible, Education and Philosophy showed a potential life Biblical scholarship was a new approach to a familiar subject, and teachers tolerated our ignorance with the patience of Job. After studying the paralleled Gospels and the unknown author of the fourth, a miracle took on new meaning. In advanced courses we considered everything from neo-orthodoxy to sitting under the Bodhi-tree hoping to experience Nirvana. Education attempted to get behind our hall'-sophisticated ideas to their basic meaning. Practice teaching at Page helped to formulate philosophies, but the real value of the courses was in self-educ'ation. Philosophy brought profound questioning of Values, ethic and aesthetic, revived the perennial students' controversy be- tween lree will and deternlinisnl. Plato in his cave, Hegel's clialectic and Kantian reason were presented lor inspection as we contemplated the train ol lVestern thought. Studying history, we enlarged our experience, as we saw the world pass through countless political and intellectual revolutions, and what we learned gave us perspective on the current situation. lVe gained a sense of the marvelous feat of transmitting learning and tradition from the time of Herodotus to that of Toynbee .... In sociology, we asked our- selves about the forms of man's society. N'Ve studied family and national structures, argued about differing customs, social changes, and sought to understand the relation and com- munication of one group with another .... YVe investigated the ancient opinion that man is by nature a political animal, musing over political parties, constitutions, and interna- tional law. The national election in l952 stimulated our political consciousness, and we diligently tried to Hnd out what constituted a great political leader .... ln economics, we learned to balance our unbalanced budget sheets, worried about insurance and taxation forms and statistical methodsg we mused over budgets, thinking ol' our own, and when the tuition was raised, paid close attention to the figures showing the rising cost ol' living .... Thus, we studied the individual in relation to other individuals, and perhaps gained a greater sense of responsibility toward the world in which we live. POLITICAL SCIENCE MR.
