CHANTING LES CHANSONS IIIL RITE: UI HIE VSKITTFIN WORD the written and spoken word became a challenge of its vitality as we studied roaring Rahelais and deli- cately precise Verlaine. YVe met Boccaccids lusty group and Pirandello's Characters, and the Italian master of them all, Dante, of the dolce .stil nuovo. And, in the same land, centuries before Dante, we met the Latin greats of the Roman world, Vergil and Cicero, Ovid, Lucretius. For once we parleyed with the Russians on literary, not political, grounds, awed and thrilled hy the masterworks of Tolstoi and Dostoievski, as taught by our one-man Russian department. XVe valiantly followed Don Quixote through his fight with the windmills, then turned to such moderns as our own Guillen. Aeschylus, Shakespeare, Fry taught us drama, through Homer and James Joyce we met Odysseus, and Aris- totleis Poetics aroused both the new critics and the old. . . . Gradually we learned to know the written word as a value in itself.
