As a minister he told us God is Love .... As an educator he taught us tl1e necessity to reason, and stimulated us, above all else, to think for ourselves .... But the girls who walked to Sage Hall for the lectures of 2l1, who crowded into 107 to hear il recitation of Socrates, death speech, went, not to hear a professor, but to hear a man .... In a May-warm room on the first floor of Founders, a class wept, not for a professor, but for a man they loved and respected, a man who was giving his last lecture at Mfellesley College .... Thomas Hayes Procter was a tradition at Mfellesley . . . but tradition has become legend . . . and a small man, with gray-white hair, a soft voice, and twinkling eyes, is one of the most beloved impressions which students recall in these days before leaving ....
