ItUMR ota ' Bene Once there was a simple Freshman Did what she was told Read the bulletins each morning, Signs both new and old. Once when she the board was reading, Round her neighbor ' s hat Saw this — N. B. 19 — Freshman Most important that. Carefully she searched the Freshman Board, all hung with signs. My! no simple damsel ever Saw so many kinds. So she sought and searched and hunted Very patiently. Till she found a sign that stated Freshmen, please N. B. Please report Octobe ' ' seventh Four to five-fifteen, At the new erected building Facing on the green. Vainly for that place she hunted All the livelong day. Found at last an ancient ruin Fallen to decay. Came a Senior wise and hoary. Learned the Freshman ' s woe. Child, she said, that sign was posted Years and years ago. Sacred is the Wellesley notice Never to be moved. Thus we keep efficient record Of the notes we ' ve loved. Truly, thrilled the inspired Freshman Better this, I state. Than to keep a paltry record Merely up to date. 29

IIWWW HIGHER KNOWLEDGE I was invited to attend A lecture up on campus, In awe and fear I went to hear The great Professor Grampus. He took my dearest theories, He laid them on the table; He raised a shout and squeezed them out As dry as he was able. He talked of Youth ' s Bright Promise And youths as he had seen them. With manner bland he rubbed his hands And crushed all hope between them. And then I turned and looked away For I was nigh to weeping. What joy to see! In back of me The faculty were sleeping! .
