The experiences of the group of subjects studied and the experiments made upon them have been recorded with care under the tutelage of those whose names are immediately hereafter enum- erated. The editors wish to thank the members of the Board first listed for the oppor- tunities offered for experimentation. We wish also to express our grati tude to the persons of the second group for the con- stant interest in the results of the experi- mentation and for the kindly and illumi- nating criticism during the intermediate processes through which the subjects be- came normal adults. The effort has been made to give an exact and technical statement of the characteristic tendencies displayed by the subjects under given conditions. During the earliest period in their new environment, the sub- jects showed characteristics common to all young children. It was inferred from their actions that their consciousness was vague and disjointed; but its exact state cannot be definitely known since the subjects were incoherent and inarticulate. Their actions were for the most part reflex or instinctive, as, for example, the tendency to cry on all occasions. This frequent weeping had Uttle or no genuine emo- tional significance, although many subjects reacted to music ' with tears and other expressions of nervous excitement. Another type of action early shown was instinctive gymnastic reaction to a sharp command, when subjects unhesitatingly went so far as to cast themselves upon the floor, indulging, as is habitual with young children, in strange bodily dis- tortions. Although their actions ap- peared uncoordinated, pei ' iodic exam- inations of these subjects showed them to be in increasingly excellent physical condition. At an early date important clinics were held by the two leading organ- (1) Contralto, Any. Just a Wearyin ' for You. (2) Diagrams and Portraits (with foot notes) exhibited in the Hemenway Art Hall. 53 fessffi izationsofthe institution with a view to noting the first religious ' and terpsichorean tendencies of the subjects. On these occasions imita- tion of the more adequate activities of the older members of the society in which they found themselves appeared to fiu-nish the keynote to their actions. One striking example of the power of this instinct Avill not be out of place. On a certain occasion a group of older subjects provided picturesque musical entertainment for the amusement of the young children. Highly pleased, the more youthful subjects after painful preparation produced an exact imi- t ation of the affair; exercising their vocal talents vigorouslJ This was noteworthy as the first occasion when the subjects gave vent to public speech, and they showed a marked tendency to stammer in an exceedingly nervous though cheerful fashion. ' At this time, also, they afforded a striking example of the attraction for the young of brilliant colors, by decorating themselves with random bits of green cambric. This touch of orig-inality was again displayed on a later occasion, in view of the athletic nature of which the subjects refrained from binding their knees. Education was, of course, the most import- ant feature of the experimentation. The sub- jects were rigorously taught to spell; their in- terest in science was stimulated by reiterated lectures on the habits of the anophelus and culex mosquitoes. From the first, however, beneficial amuse- ' I want you to meet Constance (3) Famous Quotations, p. 11. Eustis. (4) Ibid. Isn ' t it queer to dance with girls? (5) Kendall, M. It was long before the subjects outgrew the fancies of cliildhood; late in this first stage of their development, they took great pleasure in fairy stories, and proudly ajjpeared in costumes representing the characters of Lewis Carroll ' s classic myth. ' JNIoreover they indulged with childlike enthus- iasm in May-time games and sports, evincing a keen delight in their simple and youthful apparel. At length came the great day when the children were considered ready for advancement to a higher plane. Now, as a proof of their fitness, yet with a lingering admiration of the dream-like and mystic, they displayed their ability to dance gracefully, performed various horticultural rites with musical accompaniment and spoke in public for the first time without stammering. ' ' It was this ability to act inde- pendently that brought them to that realization of their own unques- tionable importance which led them naturally to the second stage of growth. (6) Paine, A. Cosed J ro sapi m PON entering their second stage, the subjects showed at first a tendency toward further development of some of their earlier symptoms. A slightly changed environment had its reactions in timid and childlike behavior. They still showed a tendency to move incoherently; they rushed wildly about; the impulse to cry frequently led to wild screaming in the halls of residence. ' Self-restraint in all its forms, as set forth in the Grey Book, was as yet almost unknown to them. But the presence of a new gi ' oup of subjects in the lower stage produced a reaction of aggressiveness and self-confidence; this was manifested in elevators and recitation-rooms by an unmistakeably important manner; and later on, when many of the subjects were given to wearing numbers marking their status, their pride and self- confidence increased visibly. By this time, too, a new motive de- veloped, — that of spiriius classis. As an organized body they moved, distinct from others, — quorum habehant. Fired by this new impulse of organization, they sought to carry it into all activities. As the consciousness of organization developed, motor coordina- tion took the place of uncoordination. Their movements now showed a definite i urpose. They learned not only to control themselves but to control others. As an organized police patrol in time of excitement (1) See Paul K. How to he Noinii Thomjli I ' rortor. Artist Recital 63 kffiEH l they proved most valuable. In small groups they patrolled the grounds of the institution, keeping most careful guard even in remote corners ; — the spot light of investigation Avas sometimes thrown in sur- prising places. The facts which these researches brought to light were later published consj icuously as an example to future generations. Later they extended their labors over the surrounding country, evinc- ing utmost hope, although all others had lost faith in the project, and finally bringing to light a beloved former member of the institution — the guardian of the South Porch. The value of this discovery to posterity can hardlj be overestimated; therefore the event was cele- brated with api ropriate ceremonies. Sj ii ' itiis classis ruled the day. But although organized and extremely spirited, the subjects showed that they were not as yet fully developed. The characteristics commonly attributed to crowds became apparent in their behavior. In all cases they seemed sAvayed by the emotions, and very easily ex- cited. An example is here appropriate. On one occasion all nature was apjjarently calm and quiet ; the conmiunitj at large was not aware of any undue circumstances; yet these subjects were quickly stirred by an apparently simple object — a hearse — and as a few gave way to the reaction of wailing, the whole group rushed madly to an isolated spot, and there, shielding their rash behavior from all prying eyes, they hastilj ' buried the text-book of their earlier life — the ladder by Avhich they had risen. Although not a matter of record, it is to be questioned whether these subjects did not in after life regret this rash deed, for younger generations might have profited much by the aforesaid ladder. Even later in this stage, fragments of the incoherent rushing about still remained. The simple rumor of a few upper-classmen leaving for Boston was enough to send the whole group into hysteria. Automobiles were viewed with suspicion, and often wildly followed, on bicycles or on foot. Collective hallucinations in a crowd are com- (1) Editor ' s Note. This ladder is not to lie confused Witli the Steps to Hades. (2) See Pillsbury, E. and Gardner, J. M.: Our Loxt Ride Together. ( 4 nion; this crowd was no exception to the rule. A celebrated case on record occurred when a large group of these subjects mistook a young woman in a white sweater for a box of books, and fancied it smelled the scent of burning suljjhur in the u])])er air, when according to very good testimony, no such phenomenon existed. ' With further development, the spirit us classis increased its work: a competition in group-singing took place at which these subjects dis- tinguished themselves by their recognition of the value of tradition and erudition. Behind real footlights and beneath real rouge they truthfully represented scenes from Scottish life, for the instruction of those younger subjects still in childhood. It was observed, too, that they flocked in crowds to the various small buildings now open to them weekly. Although some of them had never before entered these pre- cincts, they characteristically appeared perfectly at ease, so completely bad they succeeded in suppressing the impulse to timidity. After a few weeks of this jjrocess, they developed the power of discrimination, and of making fine distinctions among these various places. Gradu- ally they were led to form small groups of their own, instead of merely acting as members of the large mob. It was this power of selection and the instinct toward grouping by congeniality which testified to the develojjment of the subjects under this experiment, and prepared them for the third stage. There devel- oped in the individual mind instincts which have an important bearing on social relations. The gregarious instinct, for example, Avhich is of immense social imjDortance, was manifested in the habits formed by the subjects of moving in groups — groups which were of various sizes and united for different purposes. Some were formed for the de- velopment of reasoning, thought, and language, while others merely aimed at enjoyment of a gustatory nature. ' Several groups of about fifty each seemed to be especially well united for purposes which were somewhat similar but mutually exclusive. The formation of these groups was by a process complicated and arbitrary. Individ- uals in this process of assimilation betrayed certain characteristics of uneasiness: they confessed to having dreams of walking into strange houses which rapidly changed into other similar houses, but in every case the subjects finally experienced the altruistic emotion of happiness through shared hajjpiness. Among the members of these groups, the instincts of acquisition and construction became noticeable. The individuals acquired certain insignia of the groups which increased at fii-st their consciousness of self-importance; they acquired new places of rendezvous to which they daily repaired; they soon set about in construction and enlargement of these dwellings to meet their in- creasing needs. The subjects showed affection for the newest objects of experimentation which was violently recii rocated, and the bond which was formed between the two groups bade fair to continue into the adult stage. The relations between them fostered mutual support and, on the one side, guidance through the difficult mazes of the experiment. Amuse- ment of the younger ones was also part of the task assigned. In do- ing this, the instinct of imitation manifested itself to some extent, these subjects, however, exhibiting a marked inventiveness in the working out of the impulse. Rhythm and melodj ' were introduced into the occasion, and by means of cheny blossoms and fans the imagina- WAY Tdcn-- neBCttfimr of ucnitt, act iji scene ii 74 f tions of the youthful ones were transported to scenes in distant lands. The exhibition of this play instinct was attended with marked success. It is interesting to note the increased efficiency of this instinct as the develoi ment had proceeded. In the first stage the subjects had imi- tated without alteration the entertainment j rovided for them; in this stage they manifested originality. The instinct of habit also ])layed a large part in the behavior of the subjects in this stage. An interesting book on social psychol- ogy ' says: A custom once estab- lished, the practice of it alwaj ' s becomes in some degree an end in itself. ' So these subjects con- templated the performance of cer- tain time-honored rites; after exliibition of their powers of persuasion on this burning (jues- tion they were granted ])ermission ; whereupon they proceeded to perform the ceremony ith a speed al- most inconceivable to the human mind, baffling all investigation. Other members of the community set out to prevent the affair. They reported cases where subjects had appeared now with the characteris- tics of human beings, and now of bears or Trojan horses. In the attempt to solve these cases of dual personality the investigators caused themselves to be rapidly translated through space, ' always reacting to the sight of any small grou]) of people with gruff, monot- onous noises. (3) Fifteen on The JiiiUxiieiixdhilil; of Cheer: Young-Sophomore throng. p gsgM l The instinct manifested by the snhjects in question at this time Mas that of pugnacity, which is of immense importance in social de- veloiDment. This attitude was marked toward the persons who were endeavoring to baffle the contemplated ceremony. It was in the in- terests of protection, both of the members of the group in question and of the younger members of the community who were at the mercy of the mob. However, as soon as the desired ends were accomplished, the subjects succeeded in suppressing this instinct, as it detracted from the peace and harmony of the community as a whole. At length the subjects had stood all the tests set by those inter- ested in this stage of their development. Their mental activity had preserved their numbers nearly intact, while their social activity had greatly increased the esteem in which the group was held. To be sure, the thought that they were soon to assume the chief power caused the subjects to exiierience a sensation of dizziness. But upon closer examination of their own number, splendid leaders were found, and so the group proceeded, anticipating with delight the sensation of seeing their fellow-subjects occupying the seats of the mighty. 76 fegsi JHcmori? Cosed J 86 fegsps iEormal itiult sj djologp OLLOWING the natural sequence Ave now turn to the fourth 11 stage in our psychological develoi)ment, that of the normal adult. Various phenomena are to be noted in this class of subjects, who, far from being abnormal, displayed the logical results of heredity and early environment. It must be remembered that this group in passing from childhood through the intermediate stages had been subjected to all well-known and some hitherto untried processes of training. It is therefore peculiarlj ' profitable to examine the results as seen in the normal adult. One of the first things to be noted is the marked change in tem- perament and conduct which took place at this time. The subjects insisted, in spite of inclement weather, upon donning the insignia ' of their newly acquired rank. Not content with inspiring awe by their advanced mental abiHty, they sought to subdue those beneath them by the solemnity of their attire. A desire for quiet now made itself known. Probably their advanced age was the cause of their constant at- tempts to secure silence. It is also likely that the vast amount of (1) See Cottrell ;ind Leonard: ■■Oriwiix (if To-dai . Any edition. Senior Midyear Brain Freshman Midyear Brain 87 work to be creditably accomjjlished necessitated their frequent admon- ishing of tliose less developed. ' In accordance with their dignity a decrease in the passion for violent exercise ' was noted, and attention was concentrated upon the nobler gymnastics of intellectual achieve- ment It was now that the subjects began to talk gravely on such tojjics as self-restraint, omission of academic appointments, attendance at religious exercises, and Avalking on the grass. We observed, too, that reticence ' in jjublic speaking disappeared (this was undoubtedly due to practice in the spoken language ) , and the use of the phrase heartv support and cooperation became an almost reflex action. Originality desjjite tradition became the motto in all tilings. ' As the close of the first period drew near, the normal beings, ex- hausted by the length and exactitude of the experiments, found imme- diate rest urgent, and many were per- mitted to leave the clinic at an early date. Careful observation and collec- tion of statistics revealed the facts that the subjects returned from their brief retirement, greatly improved in reserve force and wardrobe. While it could not be ascertained how the period of ab- sence had been employed or how great had been the resistance to those ele- mental taste experiences which were so demoralizing at the laboratory,- it was (2) Center, C. (7) Anonymous: Iloir Shall We Eat? (8) Anonymous: Where and When Shall We Eat? 88 p gs wi noted tliat after this time various individuals lost their interest in vocational training and discussed domestic economy. At this stage the subject showed a strange reaction from the re- poseful dignity of their previous habits. Xot even the proximity of tests of fitness brought them back to their normal attitude. They ex- hibited a marked passion for such external interests as flowers and ball dresses, and a reversion to the jjrimitive amusements of singing and dancing. The anticipation of these experiences was no less stimulat- ing than the later diverting recollection of their significant points. The subjects soon discovered that as they advanced in age, the same space of time seemed shorter. What had appeared ample op- portunity for all desirable experiments (h indled into nothingness, to a sense of the unreal. The time for completing the records drew near, and much had been omitted. The memory of unfinished solutions of the problems of existence, the indeterminateness of the results of various vivid and emotional associations caused every individual deep pain, which manifested itself in a display of tears and osculation habitual to departing subjects. So in due time — and all too short a space — they were dismissed from the field of investigation, bearing in almost all cases certificates testifying to the fact that, as far as scientific observation was con- cerned, they had arrived successfully at The End.
