P r r f a r IN LOOKING over the history of the Class of 1913, the fact tliat impressed the Editors of the Legenda as being truly dis- tinctive of us as a class, was the number of changes in the academic and social life of the college which had been effected in the four short years of our course. We have gathered these together and now present them without connnent, for we feel that they speak for themselves. (Eablr af (Eliaug s 1. Cliafing-Dishes Forbidden i. Tlie Arrival 3. The brakenian haileth loudly: Wellesley Farms! They start, a prey to feverish alarms. The brakeman singeth blithely: Wellesley Hills! Suspense reduces them to quakes and chills. But next the oracle cries: Wel-les-lee ! Scarce have they strength to seize their bags and flee. So 1913 landed — great event! Appearing small, but charged with vast portent. The joyful crowd seize her in wild embrace While rivals struggle for her new suitcase. In triumph 191. ' 5 swarms through town Like bees in a new beehive setthng down; Like bees, each drone and worker hunts her cell. But of the first look of those rooms — O, well! Soon ardent friends drop in with busy clack To tell the news and watch you all unpack ; They buzz of lumpy cots and midnight oil. Of quizzes, math., and unremitting toil; But all dire jjresage sounds so far away — A Senior asks you to the great C. A.! Never a class so feted with attention! (Later with flunk notes fated — but no mention). Music and c«mcerts, proms, and serenade. Plays and grouj)-games, gym., and the fire-brigade; All these are j romised for the freshman ' s pleasure, To show how college values her new treasure. And well do famous speakers at C. A. Tell how they long awaited this great day And rally all of Wellesley to one cheer Of glorious welcome that 13 is here. M. T. C. [251 ESI (From a 1913 Freshman Standpoint) Our aim is to be just, aud yet it is evident that we were the prime factor in another momentous change. When our great body of proletariats, 400 strong, scattered to survey the campus, the first things we noticed were six aristocratic bungalows tucked away unobtrusively in hollows. Upon our inquiries, nods and Sh-ush-es went round. Yet it did not take us long to learn that these were the lairs of privilege, the dens of monopoly. Social graces and closest friendships were cornered in these six little bandboxes. Then it was that we. the proletariats, awoke into consciousness and power. We. the Class of 1913. inaugurated a revolution. Led by older heads, our ardent young reformers roused the spirit of democracy from her dream of fancied security. Some nameless champion hurled a socialistic thunderl)()lt through the Xcir. ' editorial page. At that battle-cry, all Wellesley united to the call of social democracy. In praise of the privileged be it said that they were the first to respond, the first to suggest an orgy of self-sacrifice. Needless to say we. along with the uniirivilegotl, rallied to the support of the trust-busters. The impetus once given, social revolution went on without our assistance. Meetings were hekl and the okl regime fell, as was testi- fied by the jaded nerves of upj er classmen who suddenly ceased taking the tr()ul)le of introducing us to tlieir friends. We. too. held a class meeting and declared in favor of tiie eligibility of every liighly intelligent or prominent citizen to social distinction and the right to wear a decoration. It is hard to speak of the self-sacrifice of stifled curiosity when we forewent open houses till Junior year. Still it is 1910, 1911, and 191 ' -2 who made the greatest sacrifices in their relinquishment of much that was dear for the sake of a larger democ- racv, and it is to them we owe the most glorious part of our reforms. It was in the early days when we as a class were more interested in us as a class tlian in anything else. Some very far-seeing member of our hotly (having in mind, no douhl. the delectation of the future class baby) suggested that we have a class scrap-book. Of class scraps we Iiad none — so some failed to perceive the function of the scrap-book at tirst. So we began by taking pictures of ourself at all periods of growth, and pasting in little commemorative notices of baby ' s first walk, when she carried green lanterns up to the campus, and made much noise after the traditional method of infants. Then we had notices of baby ' s first row in her new boat, when she broke her bottle on the bow, anil threw it away forever; baby ' s Christmas present from the Dean, coming rather late, in a blue envelope, and not at all appreciated by the ungrateful child, etc. Never did the shades of Cosines or Maclaurin disappear from the sight and memory of the elect at Midyears any more quickly than our beloved record-book the second year. It seemed to die a natural death with shower-baths and high-school banners at the end of So])homore year. I have heard of those who surreptitiously destroy the records of their infantine progress kept by fond guardians. But I? — Do I believe it. Never! Rather would I believe that 1913 was beaten at forensic l)urning — which is. in the language of Sophomore year, reductio ad absurd iini. M as 3nbnnr Mnt In the year that Halleys comet so grossly disappointed the worhi at large, onr own particular blow fell. Not as a comet, but as a thunderbolt from tlu dei)ths of Mary Hemenway Hall came the decree that all must be beautiful whether that was their natural inclination or not. We hied us to the gym and long and assiduously did we work. It was not all i)leasant, and for the most part we were rather unwilling in our efforts. There are other joys in life beside running from classes to gym work, being put through shower l)aths like so many automatons, and then being turned out into the dark, cold afternoon to scramble home to dress for dinner. P ' or some people this routine would not even be a joy of the minor sort, but to the faithful it was a path towards a definite goal and, when the time for reckoning came, the faithful were rewarded. Sophomores, as w ' c were, we staunchly marched onto the floor. No thought of victory was with us, for we had been chastened and humbled for so long by cold showers and fear of cuts being counted. But as only the strong deserve the prize, so 1013 firmly went forth to battle and won the first great contest in her career. 36] p:s r;[m ®lir Nruts aub iEa aztnr dombtuattou It was ill the .s])riii,y ' of our Sophomore year. As far as eye couUl see there was nothing further to be reformed, except possibly the deploral)le speed of College Hall elevator. Suddenly it occurred to someone that the Ncirs, the vehicle and mouthpiece of all the reform movements — that mysterious word of four letters which seemed for divers serious individuals with pad and pencil to l)e the open sesame to side-doors at the barn — might welcome a little attention on its own account. There were even reported to be some in the college who did not realize that the A ews, besides having three square inches of window-s])ace in its office and a stool for the editor, owned a typewriter. Clearly something had to be done to impress upon the mind of the community its existence. As for the Magazine, that indeed was a name to conjure with. To appear in its list of contents was an entrance into the Elysian Fields of art. Netcs and Mac azirie in those days were each supplied from the same family exche(|uer. The Ncirs was a businesslike sheet, whose onlv fault was such an intricacv of folding that one usuallv had to retire to her own room and stand on her head to read page ' •2. The Maijazinc was an aesthetic folder, for which it was necessary to employ a hairpin to bare its treasures to the world. Some of us subscribed for one, some for another; it depended on whether our tastes were parliamentarian or literary. A few pub- lic spirited ones subscribed for l)oth with the alumnae. The plan was simple, and really the outcome of a rare sense of newspaperdom which had determined to reduce its staff by a com- petitive system. Why not give them the A ' cir.soncea week in aesthet- ic garb and add a few bits of literary lore to the monthly number. (We claim this idea as entirely originaL and feel no debt to Nlr. Lyman A — .), added to which is the fact of a saving of $ .50 yearly to the public-spirited, and only one subscription for which to dun. Besides all this, the crowning and compelling fact of knowing now that our free presses and Parliament of Fools, like Midyears, are always with us, and one sees why the only thing for college to say was, Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediment . The i)rocession marched from College Hall, n st the lake and the library, to Houghton ] Icniorial Chai)el, between two rows formed of the undergraduates of the college; the Seniors wearing caps and gowns, the members of the underclasses in white, each wearing a badge of her class color. The order of the Academic Procession was as follows: The President of the Board of Trustees and the Surviving Founder of the College; the Vice- President of the Board of Trustees and the President of the College; the Governor of the Commonwealth, the Representatives of the State and of the Town, the Trustees, Delegates from Educational Institutions, the Faculty, the Executive Board of the Alumnae Association, Delegates from Alumnae ()?-ganizations and the Executive Board of the Student Government Association. After the singing of a .second hymn, came the Inaugural Address by Miss Pendleton and, at last, the singing of Alma Mater, and a Benediction by Bishop Lawrence. At half past two oVIock in the afternoon, after a luncheon in honor of the Delegates at College Hall, there was an organ recital in Memorial Chapel. Then followed addresses by four of the Delegates; PresidentLowell of Harvard t ni- versity, President Faunce of Brown I ' ni ersity, President Taylor of Vassar Col- lege and President King of Oberlin College. ' } ' s history; the most inonientous being the j)ernii.ssion to hold Stndent Government Meetings during regular class appointments. This has lent to our government not only a new dignity Init has made its meetings accessible to every member. The object of the revolution in the point system was to distrib- ute the work evenly in each semester and to provide fewer chances for any one girl to carry more than her share of outside responsi- bilities. In concordance with this system, the dramatic points were more carefully evaluated and their duration was definitely indicated. More or less in i)ursuauce of this idea of systematizing the time for work and play, the new Social Schedule was evolved. Since this change began with 1913 ' s entrance into the community, we feel that we have not sutficient persjiective to deal with this subject disjjas- sionatelv and fairlv. rrii anh Btt itl There is speed and speed, but 1918 has the real class. Rest assured we knew it long before crew competition! Ye set our pace on the rope fire escapes early in our career, and so swift was that stride that it took us through Gym in one year. Strong and beautiful we emerged and speedier than ever. The pace grew wilder about forensic time, and they do say there were stretches along the road where we exceeded even the Non-Academic Committee ' s speed limit. On top of this, crew competition was simple. We walked or rather rowetl off with the prize. Although speed is our strong point we got style all the while. Much to 191 ' -2 s dismay we showed them both in baseball, and so good was our example that Jake Stahl thought fit to follow it this fall. The World ' s Champions are at present living in a halo f)f reflected glory. But their contest was a midget att ' air compared to the battle in which 1913 showed 191 ' -2 how real baseball is played. 149] M «a ®li? (Emtflaijratinn Jlnstttutrlt lij ilarruB ©uUiUB dlns pltiuf (Etrrro Marcus Tullius Josephine Cicero, being alxjut to consign for- ever to the eager flames his oration against Lavinius Edith CatiUne Brutus, and being liotly pursued l)y the aforesaid Catihne Brutus, armed with acetylene search hghts, whistles, automobiles, and dire conspiracies, betook himself to a glade, and finding it pre-occupied, hied himself to the next with the same success; passing in this manner through several beautiful sylvan scenes. The battle raged widely. Finally a funeral pyre was raised and the populace, lightly clad, gathered about with dire incantations. The dogs of war were leashed; no Catiline Brutus about; all was ghostly quiet while the mystic rites were administered. Only the breezes knew whither and whence the ashes blew. Suddenly Catiline Brutus, let down from the upper heavens by ciuiz ropes, inquired if sufficient time had elapsed to burn that noble monument of Roman letters. Whereupon Alarcus Tullius Josephine Cicero, being about to make a detour around the paint mill swamp, replied tersely, ' Burned tii. Brute ' Thus the curtain falls forever; not only upon Marcus Tullius Josephine Cicero and Lavinius Edith Catiline Brutus, l)ut upon all others who, possessed of distorted minds, strive to destroy those masterpieces which they have previously built up by the sweat of their brows. 50] TH05E DAYS OF TRUE PuKT i tfT ' =w ?I,tii a ' i ' it. The band is met, the platform set; Mayst hear the merry din; Each raved against the other planks. And all expect to win. He holds them with his glittering eye — The suffragettes stood still, All listened like a Mondav Class; The Bull Moose hath his will. And this one freely spoke of grass And tariffs, meals and books, And promised several things That spring from Lyman A — Outlooks. And now there came both beast and bird. They were a motley band; And he had brought them from afar And tamed them with his hand. He holds them with his gleaming teeth — All of you lie quoth he; I am the only man who knows How to run this wild countree! {151 And then a Needham farmer quoth That meals and trolley tour Were far beyond reformer ' s hands, And only Debs could cure. And yet again the heavens rang With Prohibition ' s lay, And Chafin ' s cry that Stone was dry, And he would save the day. Water, water, everywhere, The listening mob did shrink; Water, water, everywhere. And not a drop to drink. He holds them with his pudgy hand — I had a friend, quoth he, ' He ' s gone! the elephant and I Hold up the whole partee. The scholar, too, in cap and gown, Prayed for a chance to prove That only Democratic rule Insures the jjeaceful dove. The gym-trained mob would break their ranks. Yet they cannot choose but hear; And then spake on that also-ran, Bryan, the financier. God save thee, now, my countrymen. From the fiends that plague thee thus! — Old Uncle Sam is with you yet And will save you from the Trusts. The men were cheered, the platform cleared, Merrily did we go Up to the Hill, down to the Vill,— We had seen the whole show. (The Senior Promenade) Terpsichore, thy votive maidens hear! With traihng gowns, long gloves and fair bouquets, We kneel to hynm thy name with fervent praise, Long-sought, that granted us our wish most dear. What ecstasy it was to view that floor. Whirling with colors, and to catch the beat Of rhythmic steps, and hark the violin. Ah, long-forbidden fruit! — to taste, how sweet! Beneath thy sheltering wing, O Terpsichore, The long-excluded swallowtail crept in. In stately barges, led by chaperons, (Each armed with an electric bulb to flare, W hich flashed around — to see we all were there) ; So jolted we along o ' er stock and stones, Until we reached the garnered festal door And greeted those who brought these things to be, Our godmothers, who helped our cause to win. Tis them we praise, tis them — yet more to thee — For ' neath thy sheltering wing, O Terpsichore, The long-excluded swallowtail crept in. O Terpsichore, how stately was thy dance, Measured, slow-moving — on it hung the fate Of future generations, for in state The lonely watchers sat aloft. Their glance Meant life or death to tlu ' c, O Terpsichore; But ah, they smiled. The ' ictory was won! Surely such joyful revel was no sin. A great new era hath our dance begun. For neath thy sheltering wing, O Terpsichore, The long-excluded swallowtail crept in. 15i ] gOT mnr Pmnuniaiii if bruarg 7, 1913 Miss Pendleton Miss Homans CEaiumittrr Virginia Wick, Chairman Lucille Bachman Artus James Lauretta Thomas Mary Tripp Olive Tripp Ruth van Blarcom Edith Wilbur YEN I • VIDI • Via {m p gii Slip (Eau0?
