Soon after Christmas holidays the stu- dents settled down to prepare for mid-term exams,wondering if they had learned anything at all. After the first review lesson, they were doubtful, but, by the time exams began, they h ad refreshed their memories. S o m e h ow though, everybody felt especially light -hearted when they were all over. Basketball season was hardwork, but each victory more than compensated for it. After each practice, the team could see the improve- ments they h ad m ade in their skills. Most important, they learned how to work as a team.

School again! The students were delighted with the prospect of seeing old friends and of getting back into the round of school activities. Once they got their books, they really felt like students again--and they felt the hole that book fees left in the pockets, too! On the first Friday night following the opening of School, W.H.S. played their first football game with Mufrees - boro--and lost! It was fun, though, to be a part of the old crowd again, and it seemed to launch them into the school activities. Our boys won the next game. 'vw -em' ,,, v . - 4 ' ' LL , Horrors! That'swhat the Tri-Hi Y girls were dur ing initiation! It wasn't unusual that W e e k to s e e the girls s c r u b b i ng th e sidewalk with toothbrushes, wearing fighting col- ors, or sporting freak hairdos. Next year, though, they'll avenge. Homecomingwas one of the high- lights of the year. The Student Council w o r ke d extra-hard to make Home- coming especially pretty and meaning- ful. And, in spite of the rain, it was! First, they won an exciting victory over S c otland Neck. Then, the King and Queen candidates Wore evening attire for the coronation. The Downbeats',' helped us carry out the theme, I Re- member When . It was a wonderful evening!

For theAJuniors, 'QQ Junior -Senior is the highlight of the year. They convert a dream into a reality, and nobody but the Juniors re- alize what work there is in between. On the big night the Junior class of 1959 was proud to present Cinderella Ball to the Seniors. Finally, the Daisy Chain and graduation exercises closed out the year. Students were saddened by the thought of losing their dear old Seniors, and yet inspired by the challenge presented to the Seniors as they began a new phase of learning. X wif'
