THEMLJTILED BREEZE SPONSGRED BY WELDON HIGH SCHOCI. BETAA CLUB Weldon, North Carolina .,4g, I I J ' f iw av' I 'WITH OUR FEET ON THE GROUND AND OUR HEARTS ATTUNE, WE SHALL REACH FOR THE STARS 'Q Q- k, 51!! ',4 nv .QP Wx 1, Dcclicafion MISS IDA MAY CHEATHAM These years-the school years-are perhaps the most important years of life. School is the formal beginning of the search for knowledge. It is therefore fitting to recognize here the one who gave many of Weldon High School students this start, and continued to guide them through the green and growing years. For her loyalty and devotion, for her continued interest, for her wise counsel and guidance, for her energetic leadership and efficiency, we dedicate this, our 1960 LITTLE BREEZE to Miss Ida May Cheatham. 11? 1 .gh ' i. I 4.3 wil' FM' n f mf' ' Ls? 3 School again! The students were delighted with the prospect of seeing old friends and of getting back into the round of school activities. Once they got their books, they really felt like students again--and they felt the hole that book fees left in the pockets, too! On the first Friday night following the opening of School, W.H.S. played their first football game with Mufrees - boro--and lost! It was fun, though, to be a part of the old crowd again, and it seemed to launch them into the school activities. Our boys won the next game. 'vw -em' ,,, v . - 4 ' ' LL , Horrors! That'swhat the Tri-Hi Y girls were dur ing initiation! It wasn't unusual that W e e k to s e e the girls s c r u b b i ng th e sidewalk with toothbrushes, wearing fighting col- ors, or sporting freak hairdos. Next year, though, they'll avenge. Homecomingwas one of the high- lights of the year. The Student Council w o r ke d extra-hard to make Home- coming especially pretty and meaning- ful. And, in spite of the rain, it was! First, they won an exciting victory over S c otland Neck. Then, the King and Queen candidates Wore evening attire for the coronation. The Downbeats',' helped us carry out the theme, I Re- member When . It was a wonderful evening! Soon after Christmas holidays the stu- dents settled down to prepare for mid-term exams, wondering if they had learned anything at all. After the first review lesson, they were doubtful, but, by the time exams began, they h ad refreshed their memories. S o m e h ow though, everybody felt especially light -hearted when they were all over. Basketball season was hardwork, but each victory more than compensated for it. After each practice, the team could see the improve- ments they h ad m ade in their skills. Most important, they learned how to work as a team. For theAJuniors, 'QQ Junior -Senior is the highlight of the year. They convert a dream into a reality, and nobody but the Juniors re- alize what work there is in between. On the big night the Junior class of 1959 was proud to present Cinderella Ball to the Seniors. Finally, the Daisy Chain and graduation exercises closed out the year. Students were saddened by the thought of losing their dear old Seniors, and yet inspired by the challenge presented to the Seniors as they began a new phase of learning. Thomas, School Superintendent, tribute is here paid for his complete dedication to the development of the students' minds and characters, and to the progress of the school. ' Between teaching World History and geometry, performing the duties of principal and coaching football,Mr. Davis rarely has a free moment. The students take this opportunity to say thanks for the many ways in which he encourages them. ' Where else is there such an efficient secretary as Miss Pierce ? Each day she is faced with endless chores and yet somehow she gets them all done-disposing of correspondence, filling out or filing records, answering the phone, handling school funds, and for a month, taking over as school superintendent. After reviewing last night's football practice, last week's game, and proposed plays for next W eek's game, Mr. Davis w o uld start the class off with Let's hustle. gaculty Familiar to Mrs. Joyner's students is Bonjour, mes 'ele- ves. This cheerfulness exhib- ited to all her students is just one explanation of why they all love her. When in the midst of read- ing to the class, Mrs. Wallace looked up and saw someone en- gaged in thoughts of his own, she would politely request, Will you please come back from the Ely- sian fields ? flea If someone protested that the Algebra II assignment was too long, Mr. Thomas would say, Ho, that'S not too rnuchwork for you to do. Hey, Hey! You want some more ? Plenty more in the book. Someone in the student council occasionally suggested some rather radical action, and Mrs. Savage would hastily re- prove, We just can't do that now! That's just not proper. Haculty How are you going to learn if you don't watch the boards ? Mr. Parker demanded when the students w e r e daydreaming or talking. Some paid attention and some learned. Whe n the chemistry class confused mn and mg, Mrs. Thorne would show a little trick to help them remember and then ask, Do you think you can re- member that? , ,. .,, , , 212- H, ,, 5- Jx min. 1 1 gtg.. .1 In their lessons in the kitch- en when the girls were stirring some concoction rather cau- tiously, Mrs. Faison would say Don't be afraid. Juniors The thought of being upper classmen at lastwas areal thrill to the Juniors. But along with the upperclassmen distinction came new responsibilities and activities. There was more studying to do, and so much more was expected of them. The mad whirl of class activities kept the Juniors on the go. They sponsor - ed dances, served suppers, sold station- ery, and operated the concession stand at games. Class rings were, of course, an add- ed mark of distinction. Then there were those hour s and hours of planning and working to give the Seniors a perfect Jun- ior -Senior. Finally, there w as the daisy chain and graduationwhich brought an end to all these activities. We had finally reached our last plateauinour public school education-our entrance into high school. In spite of excellent counseling by our homeroom teachers we found it very difficult to know exactly where we were supposed to be at the right time. To make matters worse, there were only forty-two ofus, andwe felt very small indeed. We regarded the Seniors with much awe and ad- miration. How big they seemed! Why, they knew just about everything. Soon we settled down into the daily schedule of home work, classes and school activities. We were introduced to literature, andbefore long we knew we were well on our way to the levels of higher learning when we could quote from ELOISE FAYE BRYANT BARBARA CANIPE MULDER quiet but sweet . . . co-operative . . . married Anyone for food? . . . economist? ? 4?-1 +15 5, , 'O SHIRLEY LONGMIRE BROWN housewife . . . short 'n sweet Seniors ALIC E J UANITA COC HRANE Nita . . . food fanatic! . . . good manager . . . blue stump jumper 2 Q an .ew , 4 , - E nl' PATSY ANN COKER slow as Christmas! Changing classes was a new adventure for us, and we foimd that this made our days go by much faster than they had previously. We began taking part in clubs and athletics, having five on the football team and two on the girls' basketball team. When we reached the tenth grade we knew everything. How silly of us not to have noticed in the ninth grade how smart those sophomores were! And we were positive we could never have been as mixed up as those poor little fresh- men. ADVERTISEMENTS GQ The world of today is filled with scores of new inventions and products that have improved the mode of living. All these new things have been developed from old things by new ideas. Man is forever looking for new and im- proved ways of living. New ideas come from the ingenuity of men and women who, but a few short years ago, were students in America's high schools. This yearbook is the story of students who, too, will someday make valuable contributions to the world through their new ideas. But it would not be possible to tell this story if it were not for those who have supported the yearbook program through their advertisements in the Little Breeze . To you, the patrons, the Weldon High School and the Little Breeze staff express their appreciation. Your support is vital, it has made this yearbook possible. As you are representatives of the fine in- ventions and products that are on the markets of today, it is with pride that your advertise- ments are part of the 1960 Little Breeze .
