It is my hope that your school experiences have given you the resources for the build- ing of mental courage. This attribute is highly important today because of the many anxiety problems that we must face. To try to harden yourself to the things that hurt is a lowering of your responsiveness—a shrinking of sensitivity and awareness. It is impossible to paralyze some emotions in order to protect ourselves from painful and frightening ex- periences while leaving open those that are deeply enriching and satisfying. What then must we do in order to develop equanimity, steadiness and insight rather than hysteria and blindness in time of crisis. Socrates, who, told to prepare for death, asked simply, Know ye not that I have been preparing for it all my life? The understanding that comes from this comment is the simple fact that we cannot make ourselves secure by emergency meas- ures of the mind. We have to rely on what we have built into ourselves through all the years of our being ourselves. The ways of making ourselves ready for emotional crisis are as old as human steadfastness itself. They are those of knowing ourselves, of steeping our- selves in what is best in human tradition, of concerning ourselves with needs other than our own and thinking creatively about the future. Good luck—best wishes to each and everyone of you. 3
